  • We're in the TXG Fitting Studio to test and compare the most popular steel iron shafts head to head for performance and feel to help you understand how they can have a positive and negative effect on ball flight.
    This video also offers insight into how shafts that are intended to create a particular ball flight perform against each other and to help you make an informed decision about what shafts you should use.

    Would love to see a video where the only thing that changes in the iron is swingweight and how that effects things. Start at say D3 and then keep working up one swingweight point by adding lead tape. Swingweight is something that has a ton of confusion around it and would be great to get some clarity on its effect on the golf swing and at what point the effect becomes noticeable.

    In my own testing recently I saw really different ball flights with PX 6.5 and TT DG x100, but what sold me permanently on PX 6.5 is feel and timing. When a shaft fits right, it becomes more effortless; you don't have to "work to make it work." Great stuff lads!

    I have to say that watching your videos is so informative. It really does highlight the benefits of getting fitted because there are so many variables at play to making use of the golfer's skill-set, speed, etc, to their highest potential, while maintaining that confidence-inspiring feel through the clubs. Did I hear that you may be coming to Ottawa? That's where I am. If you guys were to open up here, I would definitely be making a visit.

    As one who works in the metals industry, I can tell you that while the seamless tube may not have a weld to deal with, it does have to contend with concentricity issues. This simply means that the wall thickness is more consistent on a welded tube because it starts as a rolled sheet while the ID to OD positioning of seamless tube tends to move around more because of the inherent forces of the process itself. Now that doesn't mean the manufacturer can't sort and scrap tubes that vary outside a given parameter, all I'm saying is that the process itself is more prone to what we call "runout."

    • @charlieodom9107
      @charlieodom9107 2 года назад

      In my experience, the process of extruding or mandrel forming the tube eliminates any core shift, so thickness doesn't vary, barring any process defects, like air entrapment or pressure vessel leaks.

    Got fit into zx7 irons with Fuji Pro 85s at the beginning of last year. My iron game has completely transformed. Getting out of heavier steel but still with a stiff profile helped counter my miss of a dumped under, toey hook, which usually happened late in rounds when fatigue set in. Currently according to Arccos, I'm gaining 2.4 strokes on approach compared to a 3 handicap. With my previous gamers (z785 with PX, bought off the rack), the best round I had with them was +1 strokes gained, but usually averaged around 0 to -0.5, very excited to see the next installment comparing the best graphite iron shafts!

    I'm playing JPX921 Tours with DG 120's, and they feel pretty great. Decided to play around with 4 and 5 iron HMB's to add to the set, and eBayed them, with the idea of putting whatever shafts in them that felt good. 4 iron came with Nippon Modus 120, and the 5 with a KBS Tour. It's cool feeling the difference between all the three shafts. May actually throw the KBS tour into the 4 iron too, as they feel nice with the bulkier HMB heads.

    A lot of your shaft comparisons are 3 and 4 years old. You also tend to focus on the shafts for tour and stronger players. It would be very interesting to see a test of light shafts with regular flexes for players like your senior demonstrator and us seniors. Specifically I would like to see a comparison of the Project X LZ 5.0 110 gram shaft, the Project X IO 105 gram 5.5 shaft, and the KBS Tour Lite Regular flex shaft at 95 grams.

    Your comment at 7 mins about how a heavy shift is delivered by some rung a bell with me. I have a pretty quick swing speed or around 7iron 89-91mph but struggle with angle of attack at 0-1.5 . High ball flight so always get fitted for c taper kbs x stiff. Working on angle of attack and getting better after 4 years off but very interesting how these heavy x stiff shafts may be working against me 🤔 you guys are comfortably the most informative and detailed guys I watch. I'd happily pay to fly over for your level of understanding. Hopefully 1 day I will🤞

      1 thing I would also add is I always go towards feels. Iv no idea why but iv never liked a true temper shaft at all in any flex even though I know that is prob the most played shaft with the pros. I used to have the project x 6.0 then its been kbs x c taper. Not tried the newer project x ls though. The modus x I felt realy kicked at the bottom and it felt nice but to un stable if that makes sense and true temper x100 and s300 just feel dead to me. The kbs feel really stable but also have that project x kick. Might be absolut twoddle but that's the feel I always get. Switched from Nike to blades to p790s when started playing again for ease and get the ball flight/spin down. Hate the short irons though as just rockets. Hoping get back to steady low single figures and get some mizunos. 221 223 miz but deffo not ready yet lol

    I've been playing DG S300 for a number of years and was fit into them again back in the fall for my ZX7s. Unfortunately they were short on 9i and PW inventory at the time with a potentially long backorder. My fitter and I settled on the PX 6.0 LZ as an in stock alternative, and I've been getting along with them very well so far, even with the difference in shaft weight. Great video for the state of the industry right now!

One thing I noticed is that I have been a draw player my entire golf career, with the LZ's the ball goes right. I am not sure if it is a weight thing or what. Other than I shot lowest all time round earlier this year with the i210 LZ 6.0 combo, so I guess its working!

    Hey guys watched a few minutes of this and a thought came back to me that I hope you'll clarify for us. How much do you see people need to get used to different shafts? Often we see people in your videos go directly from one to another and then critique the swing/product. Would think especially for shafts it would take a while for people to adapt. Great example of this was with Matty and the Autoflex. Videos of him would have the first 2-3 shots going wildly right until he adjusted. And most of us aren't that capable.

    I dd a shaft fitting with my new irons and saw major difference between steel and graphite. 9 yards more carry yet lower spin with graphite. I use the Elevate 95 grams R and they create a better spin profile. They're shorter in distance by like an iron for me, but they stop faster and that's what matters with irons. I can throw the Ventis graphite into my irons and get another iron in distance but they spin almost an avg. of 1,000 less so continue to release on the greens. My point is the difference in spin profiles can be massive if testing graphite vs steel. At least for me it was. I decided to sacrifice the distance for more control and better spin.

    I wanted to comment on the TT vs. PX feel after RB mentioned that PX is more of a 'hitter's shaft' because I'd argue that both are but it depends on what you want to feel in the handle. My swing is all about torque and turning as fast as I can; not really a wrist bower, caster, whip-cracker, hand flipper, or a cranker. I don't get narrow on the way down like a Sergio Garcia would. I imagine my mechanics look like a lefty Tiger Woods or Rory, not saying I'm as good but for reference that's what we're dealing with here. I greatly prefer a very firm tip section as well the handle feeling softer, so a Dynamic Gold of any flex fits me well and even an R300 could work just fine. I sometimes feel that softer shafts can actually feel way stiffer if you can find where the most bend is when the shaft deflects and returns to rest.
    It also helps to have a softer handle for thin strikes which is my most common mishit as I rarely miss it side to side more than a dimple or two. For reference, my 7 iron swing speed is around 105 MPH and with 36° of loft is good for ~195 yards of carry. Mishits hurt a lot at that speed, so I try to be as consistent with as few moving parts in my swing as possible such as an active rolling arm and flipping lead hand. My biggest issue is that partial shots with the 6.5s don't feel as good as the shaft won't bend and I feel the vibration go up the handle.
    Seeing as I've used the 6.5s in the past but switched to the True Temper X7 and have used X100s in other sets, I got a good idea of what they do from a deflection standpoint. Because the Project X 6.5 rifles are simply one piece of steel without steps or a weld-line, they feel much stiffer overall even if the EI curve model suggest the X100s and X7s are actually stiffer in the tip section. I almost wanted to go for the PX 7.0 or 7.0 LS, but I thought the X7 makes more sense based on the bend profile. I don't know how much the weight difference makes with the 6.5 being 125g and the X7 being 133-135g but the X7 is definitely a softer handle through impact.

    • @dreedy23691
      @dreedy23691 2 года назад

      I would imagine it would be timing of delivering the club and feel. Someone may love the feel of 105 but losing the shaft and club position through the swing. So go up in weight to gain timing and consistency. Exact opposite from 120 to 105; 120 may be too heavy and can’t control the face to path so go to a lighter shaft to increase speed and gain ability to move the club

    Great video! I've been wondering this same thing lately as someone who drives the ball at a scratch level with my fitted driver, but strikes my irons at a 25 handicap level (stats via shotscope). I've been wondering how much of a difference new irons would help as based on my driver swing, I feel I should be a lot better with my irons than I am. I do have a higher swing speed of around 110-115 mph with driver and prefer a heavier head weight. Maybe you could do a similar video with swing weight adjustments in irons since it seems shafts don't make that big of difference(at least for Mike)?

      First off, and these are all my best guesses as these specific stats do not exist for me, I drive the ball about an 8 handicap.
      I hit my irons at about a 19 handicap.
      My short game inside of 80 yards and chipping is a +5 handicap. ( yes you read that right). My short game 80 yards and in specifically chipping & Bunker shots one hop and stop for tap-ins leave me grinning sometimes and are the sole reason I'm a single-digit handicap.
      I putt to a 4 handicap which helps as well.
      I'm also somewhat shallow with my irons.
      Let me ask you this- when you used to be steeper with your irons were you a better iron player then.. In other words, has your iron play gotten worse?
