    I’m updating my post from a few days ago. Chris and I finished the driver fit and we’ve gained 20 yards, a higher ball flight and WAY more forgiveness. For a 70 year old golfer who hasn’t played in 10 years that’s a lot. By my calculations I’m only 105 yards behind Matt...but I have a killer short game!
    We also tested graphite and steel iron shafts. We got great results with the Nippon Zelos7 steel shaft. Higher launch, steeper descent and no loss of distance. The most important thing for me was the reduced stress on my right elbow. It’s a very light shaft with a kick at the bottom; this allowed me to accelerate through the ball with much less effort.
    One unexpected benefit of going through this process was discovering what I’m doing properly in my swing. My path through the ball gives me mostly straight shots or ones with a manageable draw.
    To sum up, this was a very positive experience. For the first time in 25 years of golf, I’ve got clubs that will allow me to think about the game rather than planning shopping trips to the candy store.
    Thanks TXG and Chris for his patient and encouraging approach to everything.

    Thank you. i can only ad that playing with graphite shafted irons (UST 780 recoil in stiff) has helped me smoothing out joint problems. i can now play 18 or even 36 holes again! performance is maybe even better, but i suspect this has more to do with being able to keep hold to the club...

    Super job again chaps. I tried Project X 6, Modus 105 stiff and XP105 stiff. Ended up with Modus 105 and best suited to my swing speed with 7 iron of 89.4. So pleased with the results and performance, and as you guys keep saying so important to "Get Fitted"

    My switch to graphite a couple months ago is turning out to be the best thing I could do. Recoil 95’s, in a JPX900 forged irons and T7 wedges. I’m more accurate, more consistent, able to work the ball better, less tired at the end of a round, and most importantly, 95% of the pain I was experiencing in my wrists, elbows, and shoulder are gone. Put your silly ego aside, and just try it.

    Good info. Just got an iron set with N.S. Pro modus3 105’s.
    I just picked up my new i210’s this morning. I was fitted but we used DG S300’s in the fitting session. I assumed when my pings came in they would have the s300’s in them.
    They had Modus3 105 stiffs tho.
    I was pretty ticked off. Thought I got the “shaft” ;). Didn’t know anything about Nippon.
    Thankfully, I went and played them anyways and absolutely loved the shaft. High launch (for me), higher swing speed, predictable through the whole set, and obviously more distance. There were no hits where a felt a different kick suddenly. I’m sticking with them.
    I’m coming from KBS tours in TM RSI2’s.
    Stats - my handicap raised from a 7 to a 14 this year due to a decline in play and practice this past 2 years (injury and a new business).
    7iron swing speed about 78 to 81 mph.
    Im in my early 40’s with a body that can get stiff mid round.

      Played the Nippon NS1050s and loved the way my balls kept climbing until they fell out of the sky with no roll. Then with my new irons went to the TT Dynamic Gold s200 and absolutely hated them. No accuracy, sloppy, and tended to pull and draw. Ball flight low and shotgun dispersion and distance. Tried the new Modus 105 and so happy to be back with a Nippon shaft. Surgical.

    I played a taylormade 200 series iron with a s90 shaft (90 grams) through high school and college. Never thought about golf shaft before. After 12 years of playing those I was looking into a new set and since I’m a high swing speed player everything I read said I needed something like project x 6.0 or s300. I hit driver about 320 (305 carry). So I bought a set and tried them for like 2 years. The extra weight seemed like more work and my miss went from slightly toe side to deep heel and occasional shank. Tried working on my swing because I assumed that’s why it was. Well last year a looked up the specs of my old taylormades because I hit them so well, and ended up getting my set re shafted with an 85 gram graphite shaft. Had them tipped to an x flex and the last year has been the best ball striking of my life. My theory is I developed my golf swing with the light weight shafts and that’s what my brain is accustomed too. My dispersion is tighter and the graphite’s are very kind to the body. Just sharing this story to let people know to try a few different shafts across the spectrum. Just because a shaft is designed for a specific player doesn’t mean it will fit you or your swing.

    This was FUN to watch because I recently replaced a set of Titleist 990 B Irons (Rifle 5.5 Shafts) with Titleist 718 AP2 (Project X LZ 5.5 Shafts). I have 5 - 9 Irons, (put a Titleist 917 F2 21* into my bag as a 4 Iron replacement) with a 46-08 and 50-08 Vokey SM6, also with the P X LZ 5.5 Shafts.
    My 54-10 V Grind and 58-06 K Grind have the P X LZ 5.0 shafts.
    I find my Carry Yardage with the 6 Iron is a little farther than Matt's results (I do realize that Matt dialed his Swing Speed down) but I Don't Get that 20 yards roll out that Matt was getting.
    When I hit a green, my ball (ProV1X) checks quicker.
    Guessing this is due to playing on Softer Greens than your Simulator is set for???
    I would be like to know what the Stimpmeter number is on your "target green".
    Thanks, Guys. I enjoyed this.

    I wish i'd seen this before, i did what i did. I had a set of 714 MB's, with c-taper tour lite shafts. Heads were terribly unforgiving from bad lies, and long grass, so I sold them and bought a set of 712 CB's, with S300 shafts. Complete night and day effect. I've cured the forgiveness part, but at a cost of adding weight. So going from a driver off the tee, to a second with an iron, feels like i'm lifting bricks. It just feels so bad. Perfect combo would have been CB heads on the KBS shafts. But you live and learn, that hard way in the used market.

    Tough to find fitters with this level of expertise, service, and patience. Had two fittings at Club Champion in Chicago, both of which failed to live up to expectations set by this channel. Two different fitters, several years apart (thought something good from TXG might rub off on Club Champion as a result of the merger) but essentially the same lack 13:17 of expertise and emphasis on costly upgrades. I realize this is how they make their money. But for the merger to be effective, Ian’s model needs to be adopted by CC. So far, it hasn’t happened.

    I’m just finishing up my driver fitting in Burlington and decided to go for an iron fitting as well. I have AP1 irons with their stock AMT Red r-flex shaft. I get a nice ball flight, ok distance but I feel that I have to swing harder and faster than I should. That shaft is 95 grams, I believe. I’ve developed an elbow problem since I started using these clubs so my objective is not so much distance or accuracy as it is staying healthy. I assume I’ll be looking at graphite.

    Would really like to see you do this with the Nippon N.S. Pro 950 GH Neo Stiff (98 grams) and the Nippon N.S. Zelos 6 Stiff (weight 69 grams). In a test of Nippon irons from the lightest (Zelos 6) to the heaviest (130), all stiff flex, done by a pro master fitter with good swing speed who normally uses a Nippon 120, the Zelos gave the longest distance, highest trajectory, and highest spin, and the 950 GH Neo came in a close second. Seems like that would make either one a very serious contenders for average handicap golfers.

    Hey guys. I currently play PX 6.0 lz in my irons. The tip feels way to stiff but liked the overall weight. Hitting higher irons 8-w felt way to stiff. I hit the modus 120 with the srixon 785 irons and the 105 but he only had it in R. So the fitter was putting ctaper into the srixon saying its the same shaft as the modus 105. I stopped the fitting and left because he in my opinion doesn't know the shaft profile. I swing 7 iron 80 mph I am a 2 handicap, 53 yrs old. I swing pretty quick. I never even thought about shaft weight (and some other things) before. My irons are the RBZ max with regular graphite shafts. Looked at the shafts and I think they are only 55 grams. It's strange that they never seemed light to me. Maybe it's because I'm almost 61 years old. Have no idea what my club head swing swing speed is. I tried out a different club with a "senior" shaft, but it felt so whippy and the club head lagged behind so much that the club head wasn't at the ball when I expected it to be. It was an RBZ stage 2 #3 hybrid. Sorry that I wrote a novelette. :)

    I’ve tested the Modus 105’s on a launch monitor in a Mizuno MP-18. I typically use stiff in my irons (dg s300) but found the x flex of the 105 performed the best for me and yes my club speed did significantly go up when using that shaft. However when I tried x100’s, or any other heavy shaft in x-flex, I got horrible results. Is this something that is common?

    • @ryanokeefe12
      @ryanokeefe12 3 года назад

      Shaft flex only really relates to the flex of the shaft within it's own spec. While one spec of shift in the 'stiff' option will be stiffer than the 'regular' in that specific shaft, it might align with 'regular' in another spec of shaft.
      In the case of the Modus 105 vs the X-100, there is a massive difference of weight and bend profiles. The X100 'X-Stiff' is definitely not the same as the Modus 105 'X-Stiff'.
      The weight of the shaft, and swing weight of the club you tried can also be completely different. This is why fittings are so important.

The major difference, besides feel and launch angle, was backspin. With a 7 iron I am getting 5500 rpm with PX and 4600 with the 105's. What is the more desirable spin rate? Carry distance and total distance was +2 & +3 yds further respectively with the 105's on the trackman.

    Do you guys ever fit people for the tempo they want to accomplish and not the one they have? like if they were getting lessons and trying to smooth out the swing? According to SS I should probably play an X flex but choose to play a dynamic gold 5.5 because the way the shaft feels it encourages a smoother swing which helps my balance and ultimately strike point and thus distance consistency.

    Great video and presentation as always guys. Question regarding a comment you made about driver swing speed vs 6 iron. Ian said that someone that swings driver around 90 mph will swing typically swing 6 iron about 80 mph. In an earlier video I recall you saying that better / faster players will see about a 20 mph gap. Does that gap tend to increase as swing speed increases? Curious because I swing driver 105 mph and 6 iron 90 mph with what I would consider a medium tempo. Is a 15 mph gap at those speeds about what one should see?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      For sure, a faster player will usually see a bigger gap between 6 iron and driver (i.e. 15-20mph)

      Yes TPT shafts are very good, but they don't currently make shafts for anything but drivers.

    Really helpful, thanks for doing this comparison. Regarding the Modus 105, many reviews say it plays soft to its stated flex and that the S flex is more like an R+. Have you guys found that to be the case?
    Also, 20 yards difference between carry and total distance seems like a lot for a 6 iron?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      Just the ground simulation on the software, wouldn't roll that much in real conditions. The ball was also landing on the fairway portion in most cases which is firmer. Wouldn't rely on reviews of how the Modus plays, only way to confirm how it will perform for your swing is to test it

    Hi Ian, I am from Malaysia. Have been following your channel with great interest and had benefited a lot from you and Matt. I am interested in buying the newest Calloway forged e19 iron set. Considering the distance, not feasible to be physically present at PXG for the fitting. How can u assist me please? I am 62 playing to handicap 10. Driver swing speed about 95mph. Currently playing a Wishon 560mc forged iron set (KBS 95g regular shaft) for many years. Serving me quite well but with age catching up, need to gain some distance. Driver cobra F9 go about 225 meters on average, 6 iron about 145 meters on average. Appreciate if you could assist in anyway. Thanks

  • @mattspellerberg8475

    Another great video! But what I don't get is trying for a slower swing speed. It doesn't even look like Matt is releasing it, held off in a way. You know as well as I that the "average" golfer you're trying to emulate has no where near the smooth held off release as Matt does. Why not just be what it is and have Matt swing normal with lightweight X flex and show the results. To me that would have a greater basis to compare from for the average amateur golfer. Furthering that, the average golfer, 20 capper is not on plane and doesn't hit the middle. So as much as I like the amazing detail and attention to data, Matt's "average" golfer swing speed is nothing remotely compared to the real average golfer.

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад +1

      It's really just about simulating a slower swing speed and ball speed to give ball flight results relevant to the range of players that would likely be fitted to these shafts. We've been very particular and thorough with simulating the delivery as best we can, so you're getting data from what is essentially a player that swings the 6 iron 80mph, but very consistently therefore giving the must usable data.

    Ian what is the general differences between a stiff and a regular flex say with a s300 dynamic gold....spin, launch etc?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      More likely to be differences in the way they influence the swing delivery, for example R300 is lighter than S300 which is lighter than S400, etc.

    • @Stewwwwww
      @Stewwwwww 6 лет назад

      TXG Tour Experience Golf but if delivery was the similar, same aoa, dynamic loft, etc would the regular produce more spin and possibly higher flight?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      Exact same delivery would produce the same spin/launch, what you might see though is that the regular shaft in testing would cause more dynamic loft to be delivered, therefore increasing launch/spin. That's just in theory though, lots of factors involved. Think of the shaft more in terms of helping your timing and consistency of delivery, the clubhead itself is what will produce the launch/spin.

  • @hall401

    Just got fitted last week and wow was it eye opening. 7I swing speed was averaging 81-82 carrying 155. My question is I was taken out of an s300 shaft and put into a kbs tour 90 stiff. I was told that with a shallow angle of attack 2.8 down on average that a lighter shaft and more active tip section it would optimize my ball flight. The numbers didn’t lie 8-10 extra carry yards and 10 yards higher peak height. Does this sound correct or were they just trying to sell me haha! Great video

    • @mitchy7051
      @mitchy7051 6 лет назад

      2 sides to the coin, people that use a heavier shaft assuming you hit it fairly well, when you put them into a light a lighter shaft they will most certainly gain some yardage but more importantly confidence. accomplished players, scratch and tour lvl, they will have marginal gains but they will eventually normalize back to their old levels and in some cases actually lose distance because they are essentially holding back. rule of thumb, use the heaviest shaft that you can control and swing fast. don't go lighter for the sake of speed, or heavier because you buddies make fun of you when you use lighter shafts.

    • @hall401
      @hall401 6 лет назад

      Mitch Y thanks for the reply! I went and got a second opinion fitting with mizuno (glad I did) went with the modus 3 105 stiff hard stepped. At the end of the fitting I was averaging 86 mph with my 7iron and just like you said the tour 90 when I swing the way I want to was just too light/sloppy and I lost dispersion. The 105 stiff hard stepped was a perfect weight at which I could swing freely and the way I would if I was on the course. Very happy with the results and the nippon modus 3 105 is such a smooth feeling shaft highly recommend if you are looking at the lighter weight shafts.

    What would you say about someone with a faster SS (say 100-110 driver) to use the S-flex variety of these shafts?
    You made some comments about just slower swing speeds, but I have seen some of the faster SS players on the LPGA using the Modus 105 with driver SS of 100-110. Is something you would recommend? As it seems you point toworrds swing speeds in this range to using a 120'ish g shafts.

    • @clubchampionmedia

      All depends on the individual's swing. Tempo, transition, delivery characteristics, etc. There's certainly faster players that would find these shafts to be good performers.

      It is not feasible to use a person with an inconsistent golf swing to test equipment. Their swings are too variable to give proper data that isolates the performance of the equipment, which is the point of doing an equipment review.
