Matt and Ian, your channel has really opened my eyes on fitting and how to improve my game. It really comes down to the comparison of a fitted suit or a shoe that properly fits. Off the rack just doesn't cut it for people who want to get the most out of the game. I applaud you guys on the work that you do, and continue the great content that you give us. Regards from Los Angeles, Jason.

I did my own testing using Trackman. I found that on any given hit, shaft didn't matter that much with spin all that much, etc. But it was more of the preferred feel and how that feel/profile and weight translated into how well I could strike the ball. I strike the ball much better with Modus than I do DG because I use Modus in my irons. Great vid boys.

    • @nastynate9529
      @nastynate9529 2 года назад

This would make sense, considering trackman does not read spin from the ball. It uses predetermined calculations based on other ball data to approximate the spin rate. Thus the same shot from two different clubs would likely yield the same spin rate, despite perhaps one spinning more than the other by a marginal amount.

I have owned a few different wedges in my years of play; shaft chose was never on my radar tell last year. This video verified my own testing of shaft weight, in regards to player ability. One great point that MUST be said again, in regards to wedge performance on "spin:" The Ball used will greatly influence action on the green. Thank you TXG for educating us all; please keep such insight coming....cheers.

Great video guys. I definitely think wedges are one of those clubs in the bag that people very often overlook in the fitting process for the exact reasons you just mentioned. Thinking that whatever shaft it comes with off the shelf will be good enough. Keep the great content coming.

Excellent Video guys, thanks so much. Just verifies that custom fit wedges are like custom fit Irons, they make a huge difference. When i had my Vokey 48 & 52 wedges fit, i ordered them with the same XP-90 R-300 shafts that we fit for the remainder of the Irons, and i notice that the lighter shafts work better for me. 61 years old and slow to medium clubhead speed. Thanks again Tony

When I bought my wedges after a fitting on my irons, I went (after testing with std wedge and various steel shafts) with the same graphite shaft as my irons so that the feeling across the bag was more uniform and seemless. Indeed the results for me were much better especially going from the pitching to gap wedge (as srixon in left hand did not do a gap wedge in their set). Funnily the gap wedge (RTX 3) with that same graphite shaft as my irons is now the best and my favourite club in my bag. So I would say on my experience both in fitting, on the range and on the course the shaft does matter and in my case the graphite shaft made a big and preferred difference.

Excellent video with great insight. I suspect you would see greater differences with an average golfer, with more variable swing speeds, when you optimize the shaft for wedges. Even with Matt, aka “Iron Matty”, consistency you saw subtle but significant differences with respect to consistency and dispersion. Based on this, looks like I’m getting Project X LZ shafts when I come for my wedge fitting.

I have the old rifle spinner wedge shafts and SW of D5. I just have always loved the feel. They are 5.5 stiffness. But that is also when I used to play rifles at 5.5 in my irons. Great vid. Really interested in learning more. I abandoned my TM milled grind 50/54/58 with dg s300 wedges from last year as they were so different in feel from my apex cf16 irons with xp95s. In a quest for consistent feel, I replaced them with apex AW/SW with xp95, and bought a Mack daddy forged 60 that has a relatively heavier dg s200 shaft. I was going to try an xp95 shaft in the 60, but am interested in hearing your thoughts on this (and also interested in learning more about 8i shafts in wedges). Btw, I hit full and partials with the 60, but do most of my chipping with the 50deg, which is now the AW. Thanks!

100% wedge fitting fanboy here....TXG with Ping Stealth wedges - 50 (bent to 51), 56 and 60. I went with Oban CT 100 in my gap (51) to match my irons as it was primarily a full shot club. Fit with Nippon Modus 120's for the 56 and 60. Most consistent on yardages/spin/trajectory and best feeling wedge combos I have ever played. Interesting side note, my gap (51) has taken over as the greenside go-to club for bump and runs and low spinners given its tremendous consistency, feel and predictable run out. A fitting investment that continues to pay dividends.
Kudos to Chris, Greg and Mike @ TXG...guys are subject matter experts and class acts.

I can tell you that only fitter that you want to go to is a master fitter that is top 100 in the world there is a huge difference going to some one that says okay looks like the clubs are this that come with this shaft and you get them and not that great. Cause those shafts aren’t spine aligned and are just put on. To many other things going on that they don’t care 🤷🏻‍♂️. Makes big difference on dispersion and consistency which increased confidence. 6 iron on my club set was 160 with stock dynamic gold stiff shafts right shaft and same head loft and look as well as forged. Hit ball 216 !! Do the math there and was swinging easy just making contact with right components. Go get fit true club fitters will tape up clubs so you can’t see brands in my experience !!

    • @xTRUExiNsANiTYx
      @xTRUExiNsANiTYx Год назад +1

@@markmcardle2934 you did not go from hitting a 6 iron 160 to 216 by changing shafts. The worst driver shaft to the best driver shaft isn’t a 56 yard difference. Absolutely no way in hell it’s there in an iron shaft. *Maybe* 160 to 186 is reasonable. PGA tour players average 188 of carry on their 6 irons.
So if you really did go from 160 to 216, you had severely weak loft and went to extremely strong lofts. Zero percent chance the loft didn’t change if there’s that big of a jump

The fitter I work with generally suggests using the 8i shaft you use in your irons in your wedges, to match up to the feel to the rest of your irons.. his view is the wedge specific shafts don't add much to spin (as noted in this test), and most players will be more consistent with something that matches up more closely to the feel throughout all the irons. Using the 8i gives a little softer tip section in the wedges for better feel on partial shots.... I think this testing supports that! Do you guys at TXG ever do this?

And won’t the difference be more significant for someone with A or R flex shafts, whereas Matty’s X flex shafts are plenty stiff to deal with adverse conditions as is?

My iron shafts are project x lz 6.0. 120gr. What would be a good wedge shaft?

I've got Ping i200's and Glide 2.0 Stealth Wedges with Moodus 105 shafts. Should I have something more like Project X LZ or DG S300 shafts to get more weight in them? Seems understandable that Matt has Nippon 130 shafts and so the S400 Was able to hit the 105s during a fitting but was only against the Ping AWS shafts. Curious as to your opinion on if I should get my wedges reshafted for something heavier. Great video again guys.

Specifically asking about getting heavier wedge shafts.

Hi! Could you tell me which shaft plays stiffer... PX LZ 6.5 or KBS Tour S+ ?
I’m thinking of putting a LZ 6.5 in my 48 and Tour S+ in my 54 & 60. Love the 125 weight, just don’t want to play a stiffer shaft in my 54 or 60.
    Thanks!

If I have DG 120 X100 in irons is it a good idea to go the same with wedges? Thanks.

Where does the stock Dynamic Gold 'wedge flex' fit into this? I swing about 116 with driver, X100 shaft in my irons, but my wedges came in 'wedge flex'. Are they too soft in comparison to the rest of my bag?

I absolutely love my wedges, but don't really like the feel of my irons. Beginning to think I need to copy the weight and stiffness of the shafts I'm my irons....
What is the typical shaft in a sand wedge??

What type of questions should I be asking my fitter to get the most out of my wedge fitting.

Love watching you guys. But i don't have places where they offer wedge fittings like you guys recommend. Most fitting places do a basic lie, loft shaft flex.

Interesting how shaft weight effects spin on other clubs in the bag, but not wedges. Is that because of the amount of loft?

Im playing project X 6.5 in the irons and love them!! is LZ 6.5 a good wedge shaft? Or 6.0 LZ?

6.0 X LZ has the same Stiffness as 6.5 X.
You can find X in 7.0, but NOT X LZ.
      I play 5.5 X LZ in my 718 AP2 Irons along with a 46° & 50° Vokey SM6.
      I have 5.0 X LZ in my 54° & 58° Vokeys.
The four wedges were Custom Ordered after my Driver/Iron Fitting, before I bought the Irons.
I use these two for a wide variety of short and partial Shots 80 Yards in.

I have project x 6.5 LZ in my irons. What would you recommend in the wedges? 8 iron 6.5 LZ shaft in wedges? Or straight in in?

What about flex? If I swing x shafts in my irons, would I stay x or go to s400? With or without full shots.
