How long can Putin afford to wage war in Ukraine? | DW News

- Опубликовано: 1 май 2024
- How long can Vladimir Putin afford to continue his war in Ukraine without inflicting economic pain on his own people? The narrative around Russia’s economic performance could hardly be more polarized. One camp claims the country is on the brink of collapse, the other that it is stronger than ever, buoyed even by the effect of Western sanctions. With state spending on defense now exceeding investment in sectors like education and health, some analysts are predicting a painful economic hangover after the war ends. DW Business speaks to Alexandra Prokopenko from the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, who formerly worked as an advisor to the Russian central bank.

Good interview. I'm glad the interviewer didn't interrupt the answers.

Good interviewer, patiently waits for her chance to talk and keeps the conversation focused on their talking points.
That's because Irish people are noted for not being chatty.
Seems to be DW's style. It's what I like about DW.
Outstanding guest. Best discussion of Russia’s situation I have yet heard on the Net.
Said it before, but I'll say it again: DW really is streets ahead of the British and especially American news media. Yet another DW host who asks intelligent questions and gives the interviewee plenty of space to answer fully. A complete contrast to the likes of the extreme poor quality and superficial questioning from the likes of the BBC, asking the same dummed-down questions of every guest, jumping in with the next dumb question before the guest has finished the first sentence of their reply. Well done DW!
The entire Anglo-Saxon media is corrupted, owned by Turner or Murdoch. China keeps on saying western media being liars and hypocrite. By western media they more precisely mean Murdoch/Turner media, because that is what they know. DW and France24 are then put into the same drawer.
I recommend it to all my friends; IMHO this is the closest I've seen to what News Programming should be. To be fair, PBS in the US is pretty reasonable too (shame so few American's watch it)
BBC world service radio has some decent programming. It's the TV that's rubbish
That’s an ignorant broad brush statement. See Democracy Now.

What Sanctions do is increase resourcefulness within the economy.
That resourcefulness doesn't register in the GDP; but it does create jobs!
Russia is a net food exporter, and now thanks to Sanctions can develope an ' internal economy ' supplying the needs of Russian People & Government.
This serves better that allowing the Rothchildes to run the Central Bank.

No one could believe that Russia was going to invade Ukraine because most people believed not even Putin could engage in such an irrational action.
I remember when news first broke of russia invading ukraine, i thought this would be over in a week or two.
Really? That is all ruZZia has ever done since the year 1150....
They took Crimea in 2014 but no body cares, but now everybody lose their minds.
I'm not sure it is fair to call Putin.'s war an irrational act. The war has made Putin dictator for life and has allowed him to turn Russia into North North-Korea complete with an invigorated unsecret secret-policy and a legal system devoid of legality. Sure, he has brought death, disability, and/or misery to countless hundreds of thousands of Russians (to say nothing of Ukrainians), but none that he would have considered significant.

Got that right. Even Putin's own people in Russia, didn't want a war with Ukraine. If Putin and his military wins the war against Ukraine, who's to stop him from launching strikes against another country? If Putin wins the war, and takes over Ukraine we all are looking at WW3! There has to be sanctions held against all of the other countries who support the Russian military, and Putin. The actions taken against Ukraine was uncalled for, and unnecessary.
That's a proven fact. That would explain why his own people took to the streets protesting. Even the people of Russia didn't want the war either, because they new if Putin gets out of hand its WW3!

Strategically they have already lost. Battle won but realistically war lost. Sweden and Finland have joined NATO. Respect is totally over for now. This makes you think twice about trading with Russia. Expropriation of foreign companies. China emerges stronger from this. The costs of war are immense. Reserves melted down. Destroyed oil and gas infrastructure. Deaths, a lot of deaths, so demographically it's getting even worse. Instability regarding neighboring countries. As a result, there will be plenty of terrorist attacks and riots. Costs (medical and pensions) for survivors and disabled people. It couldn't be stupider.
Learn first what is brics and brics is russia and brics is half world economy.
Not just Russia who is paying for this war, Germany economy is going down as a result of no more cheap gas from Russia, Ukraine economy is in total mess and its been heavily subsidize by western governments, not to mention the deaths. New partners is been forged and other alliances is been formed dividing the globe even more. Decades from now, the world will continue to feel the impact of this conflict not just Russia.

First is taking over Russia's economy, issued edict to use old Chines name for Outer Manchuria (Vladivostok area), is conducting military drills near Russian border, annexed a disputed island from Russia last year. Last was met by silence from Putin.
Second biggest economy in BRICS, India, has hostile relations with China.
Both enjoy very cheap hydrocarbon exports from Russia. They could pay open market price for it, but that's what allies are for, to rip you off. Both demanded being able to pay with their own currency, not Ruble.

@@Alejandrica People always talk about BRICS. Why is it that so many Westerners don't know about it? Because it doesn't matter that much in general.
Is BRICS a security alliance like NATO? No. Is it a structured bargaining group like the EU or USMCA? No.
BRICS is a loose economic alliance whose name came from a British economist who talked about developing economies. BRICS has repeatedly refused to take steps to make its institution more structured because its members aren't interested. And its members aren't interested because (among other things) they aren't strategically on the same page.

Amazing speaker, thank you!
Russia has maximum two years and has to significantly reduce spending otherwise there will be serious economic damage that'll last for decades. They are running their economy very hot, 24/7 war production, 40 percent of the entire federal budget on the war, millions of open jobs with not enough people to fill them. It'll all come crashing down if they can't freeze this war within the next two years. That and they'll run out of armor in the same timescale because production is nowhere near attrition.
The same was said nearly two years ago at the start of the war, here we are their economy has not fallen
Russia has a whole life, dozens of years to go to war. As long as our people have not been affected by enemy sanctions, on the contrary, the outflow of capital to the West from Russia has stopped, that what is Russian economists have been dreaming of. There is a lot of money in the country, it is spent on internal infrastructure, on people, which is very pleasant for everyone. Plus, even if the population were somehow affected, we, Russians, as history has shown, are ready to endure a lot of troubles for decades, not to mention minor offenses for the sake of a just, in the opinion of Russians, war, and any Western Russophobia, political agitation against Russians in the media or sanctions against Russia and Russians, only shows the Russian population that Putin has always been right, and this is the right war against the Russophobic West.
@@JBEMultimediamadrid No, the same was not said two years ago. Russia's economy was not a war economy then. They weren't burning through 2,000 tanks a year and blowing a massive chunk of their budget on supporting the effort. They weren't suffering from years of sanctions and declining fossil fuel revenues. Now they are. Now the clock is ticking. Russia cannot afford this war at this intensity for more than two years hence.
@@MikeMike-cc4jk You will have to face up to the fact Russia cannot continue this war forever at this intensity. It's a matter of economics, not individual will. Russia is not a superpower, it is not rich. The West has the resources to wreck Russia and grind it down if it wishes to supply Ukraine. It can do so for years and years to come. 100 billion dollars a year is sustainable for them. For them it is a matter of will, not lack of financial resources. They appear to be finding more will. The West always determined the outcome of this war and the Russian government knows it too. That's why it is trying so very hard to deter Western aid.

The real question is: How long can USA afford to pay for the war in Ukraine?
The west, especially the US, can easily fund the fighting in Ukraine. The question is whether they will rise to the occassion. The amount of US money going into the fight is microscopic compared to their GDP, for example, plus a large portion of it goes straight into their own MIC. A drop in an ocean. Russia can never compete against that, if the US has the balls to resist Russia.
@@donalddalley7274 US Treasury is planning to borrow an additional $243 billion for April-June quarter. So, we issuing an additional debt to give the money to Ukraine, i.e. we give the money we do not have. The same is true for EU. You are repeating the talking points of our administration. Look at the issue from a different angle. Our debt is already much higher than our GDP. Now, you also assume that all the money will end up where you would hope for. It is not necessarily the case. A lot of money we gave to Ukraine in the past we could not account for. There is a lot of waste in this process. You could build a home for every homeless in US for $61B.
Without inflicting economic pain on his own people? But this has been happening since EU and USA introduced sanctions on Russian economy! It’s just that these sanctions does not target directly the commoners, but big industries instead.
We have to remember that once Russia takes over all of Ukraine, they will dominate that part of the economy as well, so the economic outlook for Russia is favorable!!

Talk about IMF predictions on G8 and Russian economy projections
Germans should know how their economy went in the 1930s. Very well. Probably because somebody was rearming Germany to the teeth and spending a fortune on the military, making the economy boom and apparently grow fast. Problem is tanks and guns don't improve your population's everyday lives and it is not a sustainable form of growth. You just have a very large expensive military that needs a big war to justify. Sound familiar?
There isn't an IMF detective squad who investigates economies. Russia self reports their cooked numbers and the IMF takes them at face value.

@@mangalanimangalani5695 The US was one of the few remaining countries with un-bombed factories at the end of WW2. Its crazy what you can do when nobody else can make planes and cars. The only winners in the Ukraine-Russian war are the counties that are not dumping money into bombs and tanks
@@mangalanimangalani5695and now their only remaining industry is the manufacturing of bombs and more bombs. Yikes
Yeah, according to RF's selvreported numbers RF is doing great.
@@Kirstinevad According to IMF & World Bank. Since when do we rely on RF? Ukraine is winning is per other sources.
Longer than our western leaders think.

We can all be saviours of freedom and contribute to containing Russia. For example, by donating to Ukraine24 which funds drone programmes.

@@frstflvr7327 I am not. I support Ukraine and have ukrainian friends BUT I know russian mentality and how they see the world. Putin will never move back qnd russians will never go against him in a numbers that could bring any change
Really informative interview - gives a different perspective on potential escalation of the war from the Russian side given productivity limitations

Two cars makers in Russia? However lots of European cars coming to Russia via Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan ..
Define lots, also the cost of such veh's is almost prohibitive. 130million people...Define lots?
As a matter of fact Chinese cars are replacing foreign automakers.

Really?
And how do you know that?
Just the EU has 15 trillion dollars more than Russia. 🤣 The ruble is down 60% already and we still have 300 billion of Russian money we can give to Ukraine to help them. That's 3 years of the cost of the entire Russian army budget. The ruble will be down 150% in three years. Russia also has 41 million people with a pension. Almost a quarter of their population and every is dying under 30 in the war. NATO is going to allocate a 100 billion dollars too in the next 4 years outside of the aid of individual countries.
I would move to another country if i was Russian.
very interesting

Why are you guys worried about the economy of Russia? Why don't you discuss your own countries economy? I am from a third country and can't understand why the German media is worried about Russia, why don't you worry about India or al Salvador or any other country?
Easy: guess who's next on the list after Ukraine. Hint: not India, not El Salvador, ...
We all know the answer. They are worried abt their own economy.
This isn`t russia, people talk about politics here.
This is about how long the war can last. The war will only end when Russia gives up, and the economy might be the weakest point.
Has El Salvador invaded a European country? No. Has Russia? Yes. That’s your answer.
