- Western sanctions were supposed to undermine Russia’s war in Ukraine and put a dent in its economy. Yet the country is expected to grow more this year than both the US and Euro Area. We’ll look at how Moscow has managed to build a wartime economy, in large part by defusing sanctions that challenged its oil revenues and access to critical components.

LV, Guggi, heck, even brands like Rolex, are still widely available in Russia. Sure, the price is 2X the price before. But let's not kid ourselves, your average Russian, who wasn't in the market for a $5,000 handbag, even before the sanctions, won't be bothered by the fact that the same handbag is now $10,000. Whereas if you are rich to the point where you have money coming out of your ears, the increased price is merely a minor inconvenience.
For example, Thailand has an import tax of 300% on cars. Most affordable cars an pickups sold in the country are produced there. However, when it comes to Porsches, Bentleys, and even Audi, they are all imported, and therefore cost 4X more than in Europe or the US. Regardless, people with money still buy them.

It is more appropriate to call "Embargo" rather than "Sanction".
Different words could convey different outcomes. Like a quarantine being the same as a naval blockade, ie Cuban missles crisis. They probably just call sanctions because embargo could mean an act of war. They're basically the same thing, but countries are towing thins lines to avoid being at war, while mostly actually being at war in some form or another.

I want to see a detailed analysis of Russian sanctions damage on German economy, particularly on future perspectives.
Easy, higher prices for gas/coal in 2022, massive increase in spending for renewables, electricity prices have come down, global demand is down due to covid/high interest rates, so Germany is impacted by these, it's just unfortunate timing with Russia, but Germany doesn't have towns full of people with no hot water or heating in the middle of winter, that's Russia

The sanctions failed miserably. Russia's economy is growing. They've made Russia and China closer than they've been. And with this decoupling, Russia may not be interested in reengaging with the West even after the war ends.
Russia requests the West to return the confiscated money. However, I thought the West had already stolen it.

I dont think that is true. They are exporting far less than before the war. The only reason the gdp is increasing is because of government spending. It is all being financed by their war chest. Once it runs out the war cannot continue. They have stopped infrastructure spending and are taxing their citizens more to fund the war machine. They are now importing refined fuels. It will all come to a head at some point. The big question is when and can the Ukraine hold out that long. It is difficult to find those numbers as Russia is keeping it a secret. I don't believe that other countries will lend them money to continue the war once the cash is gone. Who would do that?

Indians are the real winners in this trade. They buy low and sell high.
There are two more aspects. First - blocking cash flows out of country economy, which increases internal investments. Second - "result focus production". I mean that result of some high tech projects (aviation, space, military etc) - was building the prototype, which was not real working product. It was just "virtual success report for state investor". Now because there is "motivated consumer as a solder on the front line" it becomes a system of "result focused" both corporative small military startups research and production which increases creative and productive potential which can be used in future in civil industry.
A further aspect is that the foreign businesses such as McDonalds and others have left and been replaced with Russian owned alternatives that are sourcing their products locally more often and spending their income locally.
They have also ignored the fact that Russia had one of the smallest national debts in the world - it never did rely on borrowing in the way that the West has become accustomed to.

Sooner or later, you can only tap your own citizens for growth for so long that you need global investors. The U.S. dollar is still the world reserve currency by far accounting for over 67% of the world's transactions. As long as the world's economies believe the U.S. can service its debts and maintain a healthy and transparent economy, then they will keep investing in the U.S. dollar and purchasing American debt thus fueling its growth. Win-win for the U.S. and its bond holders.
Russia has no external debt because not very many countries believe Russia's economy has a future outside its own sphere of influence. When a nation has a lot of external debt with no one to buy it, then you end up like Greece and Argentina. So it is actually very smart of Russia to keep its external debts down, but that also means it is limiting its growth.
The Soviet education system is gone. They no longer have the system to make the engineers they had in the 20th century.

В России была по большей части сырьевая экспортная экономика. Работало все примерно так, из России вывозилось дешевое сырье в обмен на деньги, потом эти деньги выводились обратно на запад в обмен на акции, валютные резервы, недвижимость , оборудование и комплектующие. Т.е. и ресурсы и деньги оставались на западе. После введения санкций дешевые ресурсы остались в России, денег стало меньше, но и утечка денег из экономики прекратилась (спасибо персональным санкциям), все что вытекает из страны это расходы на оборудование и комплектующие ну пусть поступают они теперь с наценкой в 30%. Как итог Запад лишился дешевых ресурсов и вытекающего из России капитала, а Россия получила склады забитые ресурсами и капитал которому некуда утекать... интересная ситуация да? Более того еще и спрос появился... У тебя есть и ресурсы и деньги которые должны работать, да еще и спрос на продукцию военного назначения... и почему это экономика начала расти? С помощью санкций закрыв краники по выводу капитала и подстегивая Украину к бессмысленным боевым действиям, запад сам простимулировал рост экономики России. Создав идеальные тепличные условия для ее роста. У меня такое подозрение что в США экономисты начали о чем-то подобном догадываться, отсюда и изменение их подхода к Украине.

For instance, India has a GDP growth of 6%, but GDP per capita is only 2410 USD. Norway had a growth of only 1.5%, but GDP per capita is 99,000 USD. I think 1.5% out of 99,000 USD is better than 6% out of 2410 USD. ;)
umm well you mentioned my country so ... per capita income doesn't really paint the full picture of people purchasing capacity , I know it sounds bullish but hear me out the prices of commuduties here in india is mostly 6th or 5th of what you pay for them (exception in olive , wine like produce which we don'tconsume much or not grow much ) . Russia is trading with all the BRICS+ countries in local currencies. The US dollar has been phased out. That's how they're able to keep a lid on inflation.

War economy ? Japan ran a war economy for decades after WW2,but produced f.e. consumer electronics for export on it.

It’s like letting go of a liability, if the dollar is falling then so does the value of that asset in a western based economic system. Because Russia is by passing the sanctions, and using a different currency to achieve its access to the resources it needs. The longer this war continues, the more of a liability that money comes as it loses value.
Most the world is joining this new currency systems like BRICCs, as a precautionary measure, knowing Americans have weaponised the Petrodollar lol

Venezuela has the largest oil reserve in the world. They were once the richest country in Latin America. Now they are one of the poorest countries in the world. Lots of oil, can't get it out of the ground and sell it. All their close friends like Russia and China can't/won't help them.

Everything you say about military spending in Russia fueling inflation etc applies twice as strongly in the West where inflation is higher than in Russia and growth is slower. Indeed Europe faces recession and won't save itself by printing money and issuing Bonds in order to buy US weapons

There's a few things worth mentioning. Russia has been drawing down on its sovereign wealth fund. Last year they spent $38bln of it. Also, they have had to raise taxes on petroleum companies from 20% to 34%. This temporarily solves budget gaps but leaves less revenue for the companies to reinvest in new wells as the old ones are depleted. The Vostok project will need $138bln to develop, for example. Can they get that kind of money from Chinese or Indian financiers? If the war ends tomorrow, it's great for Putin. But the longer term is not so clear
This may be a symptom of the kind of goods that Russia was importing before the war. They were buying tons of German luxury cars, French cheeses and western clothes. Now that those goods are not available Russians are buying their own cheeses and cars, and importing goods from China which are less luxurious but can be paid for with yen, which they have in excess from selling gas and oil.
Actually all mentioned goods are available, just a bit more expensive because of more complicated logistics. So Russian and Chinese producers are certainly taking their market share. 5 years ago the majority of taxi cars in Moscow were WV and Scoda, now ots mostly Chinese brands, some imported, some produced in Russia. 10 years ago all steaks in Moscow supermarkets were from Australia and New Zealand (I love steaks), now 100% Russian, lots of domestic producers. That is thanks to 2014 sanctions.
