  • North Korean weapons tests have become so common that they're often dismissed as empty threats. But with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un newly emboldened, another conflict with South Korea is no longer off the table. We're used to seeing missile launches from North Korea and dismissing them as empty posturing. But Kim Jong Un’s rhetoric has changed. And arms trade with Russia seems to be emboldening the North Korean leader. Is it about time we took him seriously?

A user has made us aware of an error in a world map shown in the video at 12:55. The map of Russia cuts off part of Siberia and wrongly shows Crimea as part of Russia. Crimea is part of Ukraine and was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. This is shown in the map at 13:21. Thanks for pointing that out!

One possible reason if they actually were going to do it: if they knew (or speculated) that China will invade Taiwan soon, it might be a good idea for them to time their attack for the same time when US and the rest are already busy dealing with China. Maybe all 3 have some understanding: Russia goes first and they watch what happens, then China and NK follow.

The Ukraine war has allowed North Korea to sell its old outdated missles, rockets, artillery, ammo, and firearms to Russia. So that they can replace their stockpile with brand new ones. North Korea is not interested in a war with the USA or SK. They launch rockets and make threats but they are not interested in a war. North Korea acquired nukes to guarantee the survival of the Kim dynasty. Starting a war would mean the end of the North Korean regime, the very thing the nukes were supposed to preserve. If however, the US or South Korea launch a preemptive strike on the North then they would use their nukes as a last resort to try and save the regime. North Korea is a poor country and nukes is what makes them relevant, that's why you constantly see launches they want to be in the headlines. They don't want to be seen as an insignificant country somewhere in Asia. If it wasn't for Nukes Kim would never have been able to negotiate with Trump and North Korea would be a forgotten land stuck in the 1950s.

    • @dannnsss8034

South Korea has no reason to want to start a war with North Korea, especially when NK has thousands of missiles pointed at Seoul, and SK has a democratically elected government.
The best scenario is for China to leave North Korea alone instead of sustaining / helping them, so North Korea can sign a peace treaty and officially end the Korean War.
But you need China and Russia's cooperation to end the Korean War too, as they were also the signatories of the Armistice Agreement.
Cold War has never ended. Just stuck, thanks to China.

The 'Kim dynasty" has ALWAYS claimed that South Korea is their principal enemy -- thus the 10,000 artillery pieces pointed at it since before you were born. Why did you select Bob Carlin and Jenny Town as spokespersons to reinforce this message? Of the 6000 North Korea experts you could have called, why did you pick those two? Care to tell your viewers what the Stimson Center is? And more importantly, when your editor asked you "what's new in this story" all you had to say was "nothing, we're just going to bash North Korea and get some clicks." Right? That's how it went, right? So the Tumangong rail station, built between 2008 and finished in 2012 has more rail cars on it now? Who could POSSIBLY have seen that coming? North Korea uses the heat of the moment and occupies one or two islands in South Korea, while threatening drastically, they will use nuclear weapons against south korea, if they "oppose their rightful seizing of territory". Then comes the question: Will South Korea really risk thousands of casualties and possible nuclear war, because of one or two small islands? It is quite possible, that Kim will risk it, when he thinks the US is busy with more important manners.

Why is nobody concerned with a combined action by China and NK? Meaning that North Korea could start a limited strike on South Korea to keep the US busy, while shortly thereafter, China goes after Taiwan. From a Chinese perspective, this might be the most promising strategy, as a war between North Korea and the US/South Korea would not directly mean war with China and none of the western allies would be willing to fully invade North Korea. They would simply be busy trying to re-establish the old border.

You fail to see that because you are unaware of the fact that China is the world supply chain now.
Their industrial prowess dwarfs combined Western world + Russia several hundred times and their population outnumbers the West 1:3 ratio.
USA knows that a direct full scale war against China will always end up in defeat of the West, that's why it is longing for regional allies to take the blunt of the war in place of Western world directly.
It is also true that once taking heavy losses the USA will go nuclear to save itself. In such a scenario, China will either try to shoot down as much nukes it can and retaliate heavily with its hypersonic nuclear arsenal to end the USA quickly and hope to survive a portion of their civilization or choose to halt the war immediately and calls for a ceasefire at the current war position, defining the new borders.
China will most likely choose the latter rather than a nuclear exchange.

Kim can live just as comfortable in a nuclear war. There's tunnels under the mountains in North Korea with his own bomb-proof train, and probably storage sites filled with Danish pork, Russian caviar, French vines and cognac to last several lifetimes. Just like Putin. These luxuries the South Korean leaders don't have, and and a comfortable situation an American administration can't recreate. The latter got bunkers, but I doubt anyone really want to go down into them and stay for a lifetime. So personally I'm not so comfortable about the idea of giving Kim and Putin the option of starting a war that civilization can't take. The question is rather if their egos is more satisfied with making their people happy, and again I'm thinking that they probably won't shed a tear from their own people getting fried at the surface of the planet, while they go live out their days in underground luxury, satisfied that they had completely destroyed all their enemies. And the last thought is perhaps their only weakness, since they will want to win, and that takes some planning.

A perceived great disparity of military power with a resource or ideological pull starts wars. An ambiguity of military superiority deters wars.
      Wars aren't insane.

The West has made a serious strategic blunder in pushing Russia closer to China which in turn brought North Korea closer to them as well. Russia and China together would be the greatest threat to the United States in history and has been said as such by many US leaders and military officials. Unlike the Chinese, the Russian people used to feel much closer to Europe and the American people as compared to Asia so with diplomacy the West could have easily kept Russia away from China. But they have now failed and it was all for Ukraine and we'll see in the future if it was the biggest mistake they could have made.

A beautiful partnership. Who knows it might produce something beautiful. Like the Russian German partnership between the two world wars. It helped them conquer Central Europe together and then helped Germany almost conquer Russia.

By threatening to wipe their neighbours off the map? Just like some certain civilisation in the Middle East who are still stuck in the middle ages while the rest of the world moves on with time?

Don't pick a fight with a small country you will loose your energy for a big country
