The Crux of the matter is that the civil war between Communists and Guomindang was never resolved. After the Guomindang fled to Taiwan, the US intervened and prevented further combat. Communists and Guomindang wanted to continue the war, but the US blocked it. Now, Taiwan does not want to retake the mainland anymore, but the Communists still have the same aim as back in 1949.
Nonetheless, Taiwan was never part of the civil war. In contrast, Taiwan saved the Guoming to live and still exist today being adopted as part of government political democracy.
The very Constitution of Taiwan says that Taiwan is a province of the whole of China., The Government in Taipee officially pretends to be the authority over the whole Mainland plus islans Plus parts of Mongolia and Tibet that even China's authorities do not lay claim over. The US called Taiwan for half a century "Nationalist China". In the last decade US media and politicos are describing it as though it is not China at all.
@@ThorNado24 Taiwan sent 18 delegates in the general assemble for passing the constitution of Republic of China (official name of Taiwan) in 1947. After the implementation of the constitution, 19 delegates were elected in Taiwan. In short, Taiwan was there when the Republic of China was officially founded. Furthermore, there were several fights in Kingmen island, which is still under the control of Republic of China today. So, it's hard to say that Taiwan was never part of the civil war between KMT and CCP.

As a Taiwanese, I find our situation both confusing and troubling. The video did a good job illustrating the current relationship between nationalist China (ROC) and communist China (PRC), but it omitted some key details about the ROC’s role in international relations over the past century. When Japan withdrew from Taiwan, the Chinese Civil War was still ongoing, so there was never a clear decision as to whether Taiwan should be returned to the ROC or PRC. In 1945, the ROC represented China in the newly established United Nations. However, after the ROC government retreated to Taiwan in 1949, it continued to hold the UN seat until 1971, when the PRC replaced the ROC as a permanent member. The idea of Taiwan as an independent country is a relatively recent development, and it remains a topic of debate among Taiwanese citizens. About 40 years ago, during my parents’ generation, they were taught that the ROC was actively contesting the PRC for legitimate sovereignty over “China.” In 1972, after the ROC lost its official recognition as China in the UN, the U.S. adopted the One China policy, which recognized “one China” but left Taiwan’s status as “undetermined.”
“No matter how large a country is, if it loves war, it will perish.” This saying emphasizes that even the most powerful nations will ultimately fall if they are overly aggressive and warlike.
The best way is to increase communications between the strait. Both sides share the same culture and the same history. The wise people will finally find a way to handle.
The video claims to why both countries want to fight for Taiwan well. No apparent favoritism on one party but just explaining the history fairly. Great video 👍

Remember, Taiwan specializes in microchip and semi conductor production that neither the US nor China have the capability to meet. If the US isn’t getting these chips then their economy slows to a halt and maybe even regresses. Houses in the US are essentially built on chips. If chip production and exporting ended then progressing technology would be impossible
It is by design, so US can support Taiwan. The reason Asian countries are successful was to battle Communism. US gave exclusive trade to Japan with China, to prevent Japan from falling to the communist right after WW2 we rebuilt Japan's economy. Then we did the same with South Korea. Nixon made a deal with China, which was why China is a manufacturing powerhouse, and why the Soviets fell. They saw China outpacing Russia, and they got jealous.
LOL, while China here is doing EXACTLY that, per the agreement that stopped that civil war, and the US is upholding its part of that agreement. The transference you guys routinely espouse is almost beyond belief. I suppose we started the war with Russia, too. ;-/
A fun fact: Now you can use Japan visa to go Okinawa or Tokyo. Use US visa to go Alaska and Hawaii. But you can not use China Visa to go Taiwan. Also you can not get Taiwan Visa in Chinese embassy. 😂
The international society never really found a balance between sovereignty and right of national self-determination. The western countries are just happy to instigate separatism in China, leading to the falling down of another soviet union. But when north Irish, Catalonians, or Okinawa want independence, they keep silent. THe native Americans might even want their traditional lands back , what does the US say? To this date, no clear international law dictates in what circumstances can a village of a country claim independence. I believe every country can at least group together some minorities who wants independence.
The reason Taiwanese people cannot just group together and vote for independence because they (we) have been at gun point. The United States Taiwan Defense Command ended in late 1979 under Jimmy Carter, so it's been long after there was a military base in Taiwan. After that China still has not stopped certain military actions towards Taiwan. However it's also true neither does China want to make a significant move yet. Interactions between China and Taiwan is frequent and viable in commerce. At the same time CCP is also a military threat. Most people who don't live in the situation don't try to imagine what it's like to have a simultaneous commercial "ally" and a political adversary. Thus you can frequently hear the talk of status quo, which is not the result of lack of letting minorities vote. It's kind of strange to refer to Taiwan as a minority...generally most of Taiwanese population isn't referred to as ethnic minority. It does not have the exact historical root compared to Northern Ireland, Catalonia, and Okinawa. I think you might think the line that draws between minority and majority lie in either ethnic and cultural origin. That they want their way of life, speak a different dialect and have their own laws. But there's more. The greater Chinese diaspora is truly complex.

There's sentiment about Taiwan being a "pawn" between China vs US...Taiwan is only a pawn for the US to use against China. In China's eyes Taiwan is part of itself like a limb to a body. One side views it as a tool to use, the other views it part of its being. Framing the situation properly is important.
Taiwan is home to tens of millions of people who wish to rule themselves in a democracy, not be rule by the communist party across the sea. It isn't a limb.
An important correction is that the groundstate is NOT just the civil war. The groundstate is that US stepped into the Chinese civil war directly, sent in carrier fleet to stop CCP army from taking Taiwan. At that time, CCP army knew there was no possibility to get through the strait with US fleet guarding it. I.e., the Chinese civil war has never been ended because of US. Not trying to indicate anything positive or negative, but without acknowledging this FACT, one can never understand why US has almost an obligation to protect Taiwan, and why mainland Chinese people are so resentful towards US about Taiwan.

But the people actually LIVING there were never for that, so after Argentina invaded 40 years ago, the UK declared war and took it back, on behalf of the territory it had declared it would protect. If your argument is not that reunification should be based on citizen wishes but historical precedent, then were do we stop? You have no idea about what "Taiwan Independence" really means. "ROC is an independent nation" is exactly another example of deliberate ambiguity. Simply put, "Taiwan independence" means the country somehow stop being (the Republic of) China, maybe through constitutional amendment or reform of government. I am from Taipei, Taiwan, and I would like to say on behalf of my personal voice How can Taiwan be confident of receiving international support or assistance before it is banned from spending billions of dollars a year on Russian energy purchases? The insistence of a few Taiwanese companies on purchasing and using Russian coal is one of the reasons why the Ukrainian people are suffering. This has also led to concerns that Taiwan as a whole may not be able to obtain the international status that a democratic country deserves, and may not receive full support. Clean and cheap coal has Russia’s backing. At this point, just as North Korea sends troops to attack Ukraine, billions of dollars are enough to launch hundreds of missiles, which will certainly destroy Ukrainian residents, important energy facilities, ammunition depots, and the United States, NATO and other international organizations. The burden of defense assistance will increase, and I sincerely hope that Taiwan will immediately stop assisting Russia. U.S. OFAC should immediately impose secondary sanctions and freeze the company's U.S. bank accounts. One nuance that's rarely explained when people mention Taiwan claiming to be the government of China or Taiwan having all these far-flung Qing-era territorial claims (e.g. over Mongolia) is that the Taiwanese government can't _stop_ claiming these things, because if it does, that's tantamount to proclaiming independence. Which might get it invaded. It's an odd situation where a (de facto) country is effectively being threatened to maintain a territorial dispute.

It's a sad reality that whenever any country discusses Taiwan, the thoughts and opinions of the Taiwanese people are always secondary. As people born in Taiwan, we are not allowed to join China or formally declare the establishment of a country called 'Taiwan.' Instead, we are forced to maintain the status quo. We watch as other countries celebrate their national days or play their national anthems at sporting events, while Taiwanese people can only play the flag anthem of the Kuomintang. Taiwan doesn't even have its own national anthem. The Taiwanese people lack a sense of national identity, and it is disheartening to think about it, yet we are powerless to change it. People from other countries can never truly understand the helplessness that the Taiwanese feel.🥲
When you say "powerless" to change it, what you really mean is, you want it but you don't want to pay a price. The fact that Taiwan is a democracy now does NOT give the US to station troops or to support what amounts to a illegal dissident regime on Chinese soil. And this emphasis on Taiwanese democracy by the US smacks of hypocrisy, given that for most of China's history, Taiwan was a military dictatorship. What then, was the reason for supporting Taiwan? It's quite clear that the US presence in the Taiwan Strait has zero to do with democracy and more to do with containment. The US does not have a legal right to be in Taiwan, just as Russia has no legal right to be in Crimea or Eastern Ukraine.
You got that right. I'd like to believe that the US will remain committed to Taiwan due to democracy, etc. But a more cynical examination points to the idea that once the US feels confident that domestic chip manufacturing meets the need, defense of Taiwan may become a luxury we say we can't afford.
TSMC isnt as big of a reason to take Taiwan, no matter how dominant the company is. Technological secrets can flow, engineers can move, machines can be destroyed. The main reason would be a leader's desire to be credited with the success of taking Taiwan. So that's the only real reason a status quo would be broken imo.

From my observation as a Taiwanese, the People's Republic of China sends military planes and warships to Taiwan every day, and then keeps saying that it wants peace, and even that "both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family," which is completely contradictory. Taiwan has never taken the initiative to undermine stability on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. No, they were acting in self-interest to colonize. The United States and it's allies defeated Japan in a World War 2 and has managed the ergion to avoid future aggression. Russia and China has being communist states, started to invade and conquer other nations. The US therefore needed to remain in the pacific to stifle that aggression to prevent repeating another world war. As a Taiwanese, I'd like to point out that what the video says in 10:15 is incorrect, the allies did not FORCE Japan to give Taiwan to China. Giving back Taiwan was once considered but was interrupted because the Allies feared the ROC would lose the civil war and Taiwan would be controlled by the Communists. It turned out the ROC loss indeed. That is why according to the Treaty of San Francisco, Taiwan was only renounced but not transferred and thus our status has been "undetermined". Basically, the Allies, especially the US, wanted Taiwan to be returned to China IF ONLY the ROC represented China. China (the PRC) clearly chooses to misunderstand that. On the other hand, the ROC also chooses to misunderstand that. Even though the ROC does not represent China anymore, it still claims Taiwan to be part of their territory. According to United Nations General Assembly Resolution 1514, all peoples have the right to self-determination, and I hope someday both the PRC and the ROC will leave us alone. Hope this explains well. PS. People often think the US wants to control everything, but I'm really grateful for what they did for Taiwan. Also, as a Taiwanese, I believe I know China much better than other countries do, and they are just as... ummm, unpleasant, as the news portraits.
the Allies feared the ROC would lose the civil war does not justify that taiwan is not part of China. And as you mentioned UN 1514, all people have the right to self-determination, that means Chinese people could choose which force to govern the whole China which including Taiwan. There is no dynasty in Chinese history seperate the whole China with out been reunified later in history. The civil war has not ended yet. That is the status quo.

I sympathize with your perspective, the US would never allow for the secession of any states. We fought a war to keep the South. But geopolitics doesn't revolve around right or wrong. If Hawaii seceded from the Union, China would also try to prevent the US from reclaiming it. At the end of the day, geopolitics is just about power. In terms of race, Singapore is 75% pure Chinese, 14% of Thailand's population is pure Chinese & there are 8 million pure Chinese living in Malasia. So what is your point?? Taiwan is a mixed race in fact 10% of their population is of Japanese heritage. On top of this there are millions of mixed Aboriginals (Tsai Ing-wen is of mixed race), Dutch and Portuguese descendants. The Taiwanese in fact fought against China in Nanjing. So what is your point????? When ROC escapees fled to the still officially Japanese island in 1949, they were about 15% of the population. Therefore 85% of the people of Taiwan were not even at war with the CCP. So what is your point? The civil war was never over Taiwan and the island was Japanese territory during the war. So what is your point?? In term of history, CHINA HAS NEVER RULED TAIWAN. The Qing who were Manchurian and like the Mongols not Chinese, had minimal control of Taiwan. The Qing only managed to rule less than 20% of the island while the aborigines ruled and controlled over 80% of the island. The Qing created a border in 1750 with rocks which was called the Tu Niu Red Line. The Japanese were the first country to colonise Formosa and create roads and infrastructure. So what is your point??? Due to the lack of control, the Qing did not declare Formosa a Province of the Qing until 1895 as the Japanese was encroaching on the island. The island was handed to Japan 10 years later. So what is your point??? Taiwan was not added into the PRC constitution until 1978 when Deng Xiaoping become president. So what is your point?? The war was never over Taiwan and the ROC escaped to the Japanese island of Formosa. There is no delusion it is clear. The point is the PRC has no sovereignty of Taiwan.
The difficulty of Taiwan to be independent is even if they call for a referendum, it has to be carried on both the main land and on the island. Remember there's only one China, this means people on the main land believe the island is Chinese and people on the island know it's Chinese. All people of China have to vote, and those results won't be accepted by the US as they will surely make China the greatest. Taiwan is China, the only possible way to bring peace is accept unification. Mainland China is only getting stronger and stronger and nothing the west can do, and by the time China shift to the last option which is force it will be impossible to fight against.
This logic sounds a little weird for me. Does Brexit carry on both the UK and the rest of the EU? Does the Scottish independence referendum carry on both Scotland and the rest of the UK?

@@skyleaker Lol. You’re a bit daft. The whole UK voted for the Scottish Referendum in 2014 not just people that live in Scotland. And said “No” by the way. @@xhaozhao Eligibility to vote Under the terms of the 2010 Draft Bill, the following people were entitled to vote in the referendum: British citizens who were resident in Scotland; Citizens of other Commonwealth countries who were resident in Scotland; Citizens of other European Union countries who were resident in Scotland; Members of the House of Lords who were resident in Scotland; Service/Crown personnel serving in the UK or overseas in the British Armed Forces or with Her Majesty's Government who were registered to vote in Scotland. I think the idea is clear, Scottish people can make their own mind about their belongs. Not the whole UK.

About 40 years ago, during my parents’ generation, they were taught that the ROC was actively contesting the PRC for legitimate sovereignty over “China.”
In 1972, after the ROC lost its official recognition as China in the UN, the U.S. adopted the One China policy, which recognized “one China” but left Taiwan’s status as “undetermined.”

So the people of Okinawa want independence, but they are also under the gun @ Mewwykat

There's sentiment about Taiwan being a "pawn" between China vs US...Taiwan is only a pawn for the US to use against China. In China's eyes Taiwan is part of itself like a limb to a body. One side views it as a tool to use, the other views it part of its being. Framing the situation properly is important.

The groundstate is that US stepped into the Chinese civil war directly, sent in carrier fleet to stop CCP army from taking Taiwan.

Help Us😢😢😢: Taiwan’s Democracy is Under Threat
Taiwan is in crisis. What was once a proud democracy is now slipping into authoritarianism as political forces take control of our judiciary. The recent case of Ko Wen-je highlights this alarming trend. Initially released by one judge due to lack of evidence, Ko was detained just days later by another judge with strong political ties-despite no proof of wrongdoing. This is not justice; this is political persecution.
Ko has endured 70 hours of interrogation without evidence, while details of his case were leaked to the media to shape public opinion before any trial. This manipulation of the judiciary is a dangerous sign that Taiwan’s democracy is being dismantled.
We ask for your help. Today it is Ko, tomorrow it could be anyone who opposes the ruling power. If the judiciary becomes a tool for political oppression, Taiwan’s freedom will be lost. We need the international community to stand with us, to protect justice, and to prevent this slide into dictatorship.
Please, help us before it’s too late.

This is not justice-it is pure political persecution.

Sounds just like the US.
