  • @14AllanD
    @14AllanD 4 года назад +3

    Fun fact with Martian Gothic! It was planned to be a novel series but the writer was approached to make it into a game instead. This is why world-building takes such a large role, but in the end, the story is quite crazy good for a Sci-Fi. It even is the basis of inspiration for some elements in Dead Space as we know it. A Marker praised by a cult of people who don't understand the alien power, turning them into undead beings. :)
    Also sadly, they were rushed by like 6 months to get the game completed and shipped out. Resulting in a frustratingly difficult game and even some enemy mechanics missing. I think it had good potential but came out a little too late and sadly rushed as it was made by a very small team.

    One of the interesting mechanics in Martian Gothic: Unification Point is that the characters have to stay separated or else they'll be assimilated into a monstrosity called a "Tri-Morph". This idea that the characters could be assimilated by being together is truly horrifying. I also believe that Deep Fear is a criminally underrated survival-horror game, and that I wish it was remade or remastered. You not only can move and shoot in that game, but the story is really good. There's a bulldog named Rambo in Deep Fear, and that's SUPER ADORABLE!!!😀😁😍

    I can't believe you didn't mention the drug use aspect of the original PS release of Galerians which was toned WAY DOWN in Galerians: Ash. Having to use drugs to fuel your individual powers as well as the drugs you use to keep them from overloading your brain AS WELL as the drugs you took for health was crazy given the frequency in which you used them. And since there were animations for many of them, you spent a good deal of time watching cinematics of Rion popping pills and injecting questionable substances straight into his carotid.

    Probably my favourite "RE Clone" was In Cold Blood by the devs of Beneath a Steel Sky & Broken Sword. It was basically James Bond done in the style of Resident Evil, but it was less of a survival horror & more of a point & click adventure game.
    However, there were a few levels with some rather horrific & tense moments that caught me off guard & definitely could've felt at home in a true survival horror game like Resident Evil. BTW, it's on GOG for less than 10 bucks!

    • @travisjordan3853
      @travisjordan3853 4 года назад +1

      Nope, you're absolutely correct, Silent Hill did indeed start life as Konami's answer to Resident Evil. However, over time Konami lost faith in the project, so the development team just said "fuck it" and decided to take the game in a very different direction than what Konami had originally wanted. Kinda like how Demon's Souls started life as a failed Elder Scrolls clone before Hidetaka Miyazaki swooped in and re-tooled the entire game into its final form.

      Yeah I don't get tank control haters. It's like they don't know what they're talking about, mofos don't even realize RE4 has tank controls. And they say they're outdated. Like it literally prevents you from losing the sense of direction, no other control scheme does that, how is it outdated?

    • @SB-Out51d3R-
      @SB-Out51d3R- 3 года назад +1

      @@steelbear2063 The complaint about Tank Controls is usually from the time-loss that happens as you rotate(ppl are usually impatient,w/ character-movement-response). Also,ppl who don't use the dodge-function effectively or have trouble w/ the controls,in general. Another thing is,if there isn't even a dodge function in the 1st place,you usually take damage for what seems an unfair reason...
      Those seem like valid complaints,if you aren't used to "Tank Controls" & you compare that,to how the majority of games don't use them...
      There is a valid argument,that dodging is usually much easier w/o tank controls.As,all you have to do is press the controls(or w/e is equivalent)to /immediately/ move the character. Versus,waiting for them to rotate,so that you can cause /any/ movement. Again,unless there is a "dodge" function,of some sort...
      It really depends,on which kind of controls you grow-up playing games w/. Or,if you can easily adjust to using different control styles & be as proficient w/ whatever you have to use(gamers don't usually have a choice,that is)...
      BTW,for the record,I like tank controls in games that are RE-style or use pre-rendered BGs(usually one-&-the-same). Tho,it can be hard for me to switch back-&-forth between styles & not need an "adjustment period",in certain games...

    I totally thought Carrier on Dreamcast was what Deep Fear was supposed to be. I remember reading a Gamepro magazine and seeing the Deep Fear preview (I'm dating myself here) but never saw it come to states, though now I know why. When Carrier came out, I figured they just scrapped Deep Fear and made that instead. Now I know, haha. Thanks for sharing this!

      Kamen Rider: Seigi no Keifu does utilize a "Resident Evil" style format of running around in a set environment where the player must traverse the landscape, while picking up necessary items to open locked doors and progress through the stage but that's where the similarities end

    • @SB-Out51d3R-
      @SB-Out51d3R- 3 года назад +1

      Just want 2 add 2 what you said about Extermination...
      Namely,that it was also a launch title & it didn't take long for other games to over-shadow it...
      What I mean is,I started working in retail,about the time it came out. And,I always noticed LOTS of unsold copies in the game-case at our store. Then,years later,any of the other stores within the company I worked at,they would also have large quantities of the game,still unsold...
      Which,lead to it being easy to get a copy,for those waiting for it to be reduced. Or,put on clearance...
      I ended-up buying it about half-off from full-price,not on clearance. Because,I waited until sometime in 2004 & the store I was at,at the time,only had a few copies left. So,rather than risk waiting so long that the final copy sells,I bought it at about half-off. However,not long after,the store finally reduced all of their oldest PS2 games to almost single-digit pricing(Extermination ended-up going down to just $15,shortly after I bought my copy)...
      Anyway,I don't think the game was well-received by others,but I agree w/ you. As,I enjoyed it for awhile. Though,there was some part early in the game that either confused me or was too difficult for me. As,I bought the strategy-guide & the game,at the same time. But,even with the strategy-guide,I got stuck somewhere. And,when that happens,I move on to another game. In this case,there wasn't much choice,though...
      Another thing worth mentioning,is that the developers thought they had a "sure-fire hit". Since,there were Game Mags talking of it being like "Resident Evil-meets-The Thing",in their Previews of the game-footage...
      That is,I specifically can remember how all the game mag previews kept talking about how great the CG-sequences looked. Also,this being one of the 1st PS2 games EVER,meant that /anything/ was bound to be considered "must-play" & be well-received...
      However,I recall the /Reviews/ were quite poor(supposedly,the game was more promising-looking in the early-stages everyone was judging it by). Specifically,there was great disappointment that the game didn't change much from the early version to the final-release...
      EGM,in particular,disliked how scripted the game felt & that it was too linear &/or simple,overall. Mostly,the reviewer complained about how he felt the game should have stayed in development longer. Or,that the developers should have done more with their time,before release,to match what was "promised",or whatever...
      Also worth mentioning,is that some EGM reviewers were known for being "picky" & overly-expectant of games. Which,is what lead to them having multiple reviewers,later-on. And replacing reviewers,over the years...
      However,at this time,they were still using the single-reviewer format...
      To explain how I remember this so well; I used to read LOTS of game mags & I would re-visit them,while looking for info. on various games from yesteryear,that I bought from GameStop. This may sound strange,to the modern gamer. But,since I'm from the pre-internet-age,I enjoy the nostalgia of going thru my old game mags...
      Anyways,sorry for the length,but hopefully this will be worth reading someday,by those interested in hearing more about "Extermination". I apologize in advance for not putting it in a more "interesting" order. But,I felt it necessary to keep the original flow. Rather,than attempt at editing for conciseness. Also,I'm excessively-thorough/eccentric & despise the lack-of-openness so prevalent w/ comments,at times. Which,has lead to me needing to clarify,rather unnecessarily,I feel. So,hopefully this will prevent that from being requested(I guess)...
      Sooooo,yeah... ;)
      -Peace & Hopefully this will be of use 2 /someone/ out-there :)

I had a hard time grasping at first that there was a survival horror X-Files game, with 2 branching paths nonetheless, but it's also surprisingly decent. It's also hard as balls, but it has the series' spirit, with (fine, totally zoned out) voiceacting by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson themselves.
