Hey fun fact about Gackt hes also the singer of a Japanese show known as Kamen Rider Decade singing its main theme "Journey through the Decade" thought it would be cool to add that little tidbit for my Rider brothers out there
Between Van Helsing and X-Men Origins, I wonder if Hugh Jackman movies are just somehow cursed(?) to be bad and then make subsequently solid tie-in games.
I remember playing the Van Helsing game when I was like 12 and not liking it. The main thing I remember is getting a crossbow, then just being assaulted by owls.
One of my best childhood nostalgia. The level and aesthetics are great based on what I remember. Highlights include a haunted carnival and a haunted aquarium. The combat is simple enough for kid me to enjoy and boy is the penance stare satisfying to use.
Defiance only used the same fighting mechanics, overall it's a completely different game with a story that's 10 times deeper that anything DMC came up with. Calling that a clone is a freaking joke.
I’ve actually had that game in my wishlist for the longest time, so I might actually pick it up sometime. Especially since it reminds me of Dust: An Elysian Tail, which I quite enjoyed.
Dude. I remember seeing Bujingai Forsaken City being covered in PS2 Magazine back in the day and the art style and characters completely captivated me. I didn't own a PS2 back then so my experience of the game was only screenshots and concept art. But damn, when you showed the game it brought back memories of that time.....
It's a movie that went ALL OUT, and I love it. Especially for how much respect it surprisingly had for the Universal Monsters original stories. It's pure gothic horror action flick that, for me, is a classic
As someone who HAS seen Hugh Jackman's Van Helsing, I can confirm that it is quite underrated. It may not be award worthy, but it is fun, intelligently written, well acted, and has pretty solid character designs and visual effects. It's a little campy, but that seems to be intentional as it goes out of its way to pay homage to old black and white Universal monster movies in a respectful but self-aware manner, that ironically handled a shared universe idea much better than any of the Dark Universe movies that tried to mimic the MCU intentionally a decade later. And it's werewolves looked ten times better than anything in the Underworld franchise, even the films that came out well after it. Also, one of my favorite movie soundtracks of all time.
You should watch Van Helsing. I loved it despite it's flaws due to the Castlevania situation with all the different monsters. Just don't think too hard about the movie and it will be a good time.
@@notproductiveproductions3504 well i cant call beyonetta either cuz it transcends being a game and is an experience beyonetta is one of my favorite games of all time 😅
The "clones" are simply called "Character action" or "Spectacle Fighters". Or just Hack n Slash. There's almost nothing DMC about them in the long run after you pick up the controller. The ones that actively involve being stylish and creative with combos and mix-ups (like Assault Spy) are called "Style Action", since it's all about playing as hyper expressive characters that impress the Style meter, that is in turn actively trying to get you to play more like the actual character. These kind of games turn combos into an artform in their own right, if combo MADs are anything to go by. Unfortunately, true Style Action games not made by Capcom or Platinum are very rare and you typically end up with bootleg feeling games that don't actually get it, like most games in this video.
@@LoliconSamalik Damn, I forgot about character action. They are barely mentioned that it doesnt feel real. I see DMC are a game worth to copy. Because it focuses on fun and combat freedom. I didn't really meant these clones, I made the comments not even halfway through the video. What I meant are games like assault spy that embraces the DMC stylish elements. DMC isn't about beating the game, but beating yourself and finding a way to make it more fun. Simple Hack and Slash just told you to defeat the boss complete the game, like what shown in some of the games in the vids. It doesnt really give you freedom on how to do it. Souls and souls-like game only give you superficial reward for beating ridicilously hard enemies but gets lots of clones, which still loved by many anyway. It punishes you for just being a casual player in a single player game. You can be just a casual player and have fun in DMC. And it's really disappointing that AAA games that truly rival DMC are games made by The Studio founded by Original DMC designer. And it's funny how they keep copying each other like they still in the same team.
I know people are saying Jack's Soul Robber was the precursor to Nero's Devil Bringer but... Let's not forget that it was also basically a homage to Jacque (Jean Reno's character from Onimusha 3) and his awesome whip from that game.
I actually loved both the movie and the game Van Helsing. And having gone back to watch it recently, its honestly surprising how much it feels like a Marvel movie set in a gothic setting.
I always watched it in Ukrainian with good voice acting. Tried recently to do it in English and I just couldn't. That accent actor of Dracula was doing killed it for me.
I was literally thinking about this, it was the only other game other than the Geometry Wars demo I got to play before I got the RRD and returned the only Xbox console I ever owned lol. Legitimately awesome game!
If I had a nickel for every licensed hack & slash game based on a Hugh Jackman film that happened to be better than it's source material, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
The hat mechanic is honestly the best thing I've ever heard. Where are more games that have the "keep hat on" check on the results screen?! AND THE ENEMIES CAN PUT THE HAT ON??? IM SOLD
I am that guy who bought Bujingai. I preordered it (my Gamestop was pushing it really hard for some reason), and played through every difficulty. Those later difficulties were horseshit because the platforming got super annoying. I think I still have my original copy too.
Man hearing Oogie Boogie's revenge theme again made me happy, I had it as a kid and even both me and my brother not understanding it. now I have Soul Robber burned into my brain
Hi Austin, I recommend the Castlevania lament of innocence on ps2, straight up DMC clone for a sequel to this, ur welcome :) Also I played bujingai alot back in the day, didnt know or care who gact was then , till I heard the story he single handedly got new fist of the north star made and kept ff7 going. videos on review sites made it look alot like the shinobi ps2 revival which I also really enjoyed, I digged those early 2000s action platformers they were great, thanks for shining a light on it! :) Also van helsing is an awesome movie, basically the closest we got to live action Castlevania, give it a watch it's alot of fun, it's probably the best plot I have ever seen that convincingly combines Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and the wolf man into one thing, and they threw Mr Hyde in there to boot and Dracula's brides and it all works very well, personally I like it better than the mummy movies.
The only "DMC-like" aspect of that game was that it had a Devil Trigger mechanic. Gameplay-wise it was just a poor man's Resident Evil 4, without the horror aspect obviously
I'm actually surprised you didn't mention Chaos Legion (though you'd rag on it, and that's ok, but it's one of my favorite PS2 games). Anyways, it was made by Capcom, and they even revised the concept in DMC 5 with the summoner guy, which was the only reason I wanted to play it, but I just never got around to it.
I rented Bujingai from my local Blockbuster 20 years ago. It was mad easy. There was an exploit in the movement, and I remember wall running to the ceiling of every stage just for fun. But my favorite hack n' slash from the PS2 era was Genji Dawn of the Samurai. If you timed your attack during a specific moment in the enemy's animation, you could insta-kill them, and they drop components to make stronger swords. Didn't notice until my 2nd playthrough. Each playthrough just transfers all of your progress by default. It took me 7 playthroughs to collect them all, and I might just buy a PS2 to play it again. Genji was difficult and challenging af, too.
Dishwasher Dead: Vampire Smile Took a kinda DMC game and added magnificent ranged combat to its already stellar melee. And it has dashing, quick weapon swap, and you play as two siblings.

I bought Bujingai twice. Sold it or traded it in the first time, then bought it again when I wanted to add to my PS2 collection lol.
I bought it after watching an episode of Xplay. I can't remember if they gave it a bad review but I got it anyway.
@@lonewolffang Pretty sure that's where I heard about it. Looked like a fun game.
I played and finished it over the course of a weekend when it came out and really enjoyed it.
@@lonewolffang I remember them giving it bad rating of 2 out 5
2:56 thank you for unlocking the hidden depths of my fondest childhood gaming memories. i forgot this game existed and i loved it growing up
You ripping into Gackt for 4 minutes absolutely renewed my lease on life and made me feel 15 again
6:58 "He's also allegedly the reason we don't have any ports of FF7: Crisis Core"
Crisis Core Reunion and Ever Crisis: Are you sure about that?
I still make "Featuring dante from DMC series" memes
One thing I'd like to point out about Assault Spy is, what is it with the Officers and talking like the Unreal Tournament announcer?
That SMT Nocturne music in the beginning. I see what you did there
SMT Nocturne: Featuring dante from DMC series
Hey fun fact about Gackt hes also the singer of a Japanese show known as Kamen Rider Decade singing its main theme "Journey through the Decade" thought it would be cool to add that little tidbit for my Rider brothers out there
"I guess people buy anything"
Yes they do.
Most people disagree on Ghost rider saying its pretty good, not great just good.
Fun fact... Every tie-in game featuring Hugh Jackman as the main protagonist it's decent to a good game... What a twist...
Wolverine Origins game!
HOW HAVE I NEVER HEARD OF THE GHOST RIDER GAME, THAT SOUNDS AWESOME
One of my best childhood nostalgia. The level and aesthetics are great based on what I remember. Highlights include a haunted carnival and a haunted aquarium. The combat is simple enough for kid me to enjoy and boy is the penance stare satisfying to use.
Seeing Bujingai even be mentioned in 2021 makes me happy. Loved that game so much, despite it's faults.
Another great video, Austin!
Me too man :D
Glad too see so many people liking it in the comments, Gackt will never be a memory
There are at least two more DMC-clones I can think of and they're Legacy of Kain: Defiance and El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron.
Defiance only used the same fighting mechanics, overall it's a completely different game with a story that's 10 times deeper that anything DMC came up with.
Calling that a clone is a freaking joke.
The simple facts that one of my favorite channels took time to promote Gackt-O sama warms my heart.
Rebirth is a classic period
Redemption though
The Ghost Rider game sounds actually very good. Ghost Rider is a perfect character for a good Hack and Slash game. Same thing with Spawn.
Valdis Story: Abyssal City on Steam is an amazing 2D Metroidvania with dmc style combat, a true gem in the rough.
I’ve actually had that game in my wishlist for the longest time, so I might actually pick it up sometime. Especially since it reminds me of Dust: An Elysian Tail, which I quite enjoyed.
The Nightmare Before Christmas game is my favorite DMC clone. Closest we will ever get for a sequel since Tim Burton said he wouldn't make one.
I can't believe I was obsessed with Gackt back in high school and am only just now hearing about a game starring him, damn.
There actually was a cancelled Nightmare Before Christmas sequel in development in 2003 & that DMC clone is what remains of it.
Im surprised you didn't cover Chaos Legion. The tagline on the back of the box was literally "If you liked Devil May Cry, you're gonna love this!"
I'm surprised he didn't cover nanobreaker
Dude. I remember seeing Bujingai Forsaken City being covered in PS2 Magazine back in the day and the art style and characters completely captivated me. I didn't own a PS2 back then so my experience of the game was only screenshots and concept art. But damn, when you showed the game it brought back memories of that time.....
As someone who loves the Van Helsing film, it's kinda sad how negative everyone is towards it.
I feel you man. It's just cheesy enough, the actor who plays Dracula really does a good job i think and the music in that movie is so freaking good.
This is a hot take but I liked it far more than Bram Stoker’s Dracula with Gary Oldman and Keanu Reeves
Haven't seen it since I was a kid but I remember liking it.
Well, it was a mediocre film.
5 seconds into the video and already the Nocturne ost. Subbed for sure ONG
This is why I like Austin. Where else am I gonna get a Dark Sector reference in a video lol. Love that game.
Dude the Ghost Rider DMC clone was a slapper. It was absolutely sick.
You forgot to mention that Gackt went on to Voice the Vocaloid Gackpoid AKA Gakupo!
Used to just call this genre the regular hack an slash style!
Until GodHand did it without swords
@@notproductiveproductions3504 asuras wrath too call those 3d beat em ups!
@@mintyninja6418 and then there’s Bayonetta using neither
@@notproductiveproductions3504 well i cant call beyonetta either cuz it transcends being a game and is an experience beyonetta is one of my favorite games of all time 😅
Not to mention that character action *shooter* that came out the same day as Animal Crossing New Horizon
I think people would agree with me that DMC and the "clones" deserves its own genre like how souls-like are.
It is known as Hack and Slash .
It's the best Castlevania live action movie. I really don't understand where all the hate comes from.
@@nobodyinterestingyou I watched it at least twice, liked it a lot, didn't know it was received so poorly internationally
@@wallacesousuke1433 dunno why it's disliked so much I remember watching it alot as a teenager it was pretty good
I always watched it in Ukrainian with good voice acting. Tried recently to do it in English and I just couldn't. That accent actor of Dracula was doing killed it for me.
yo assault spy looks like something I'd love! thanks for bringing it to my radar
my fav DMC clone is kung fu panda on x360, how many hipster points do i get for that
That no lie sounds kinda fun
Game is rad. Rolling around was fun
I was literally thinking about this, it was the only other game other than the Geometry Wars demo I got to play before I got the RRD and returned the only Xbox console I ever owned lol. Legitimately awesome game!
Made by Greg Johnson of Toejam and Earl fame iirc.
Hey! You are very welcome to watch my new Balls&Walls clip. Enjoy it ! ruclips.net/video/MQvLTUW-AtQ/видео.html s
If I had a nickel for every licensed hack & slash game based on a Hugh Jackman film that happened to be better than it's source material, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Assault Spy looks genuinely fun, I'm kind of intrigued.
I played the nightmare before Christmas game when I was young and was pleasantly surprised how fun it was
I don’t remember subscribing to you but you’ve earned my sub, nice vid dude
So glad that Assault Spy is getting more recognition. Also, loved your description of Amelia. XD
Man, the Van Helsing movie is great, and im glad to know there's a ps2 dmc game for it, god bless
The hat mechanic is honestly the best thing I've ever heard. Where are more games that have the "keep hat on" check on the results screen?! AND THE ENEMIES CAN PUT THE HAT ON??? IM SOLD
I didn't know the singer of Journey through the Decade had his own video game.
Heard the FF7 Crisis Core Desert Wasteland track background music at 9:09 while falling asleep, that's tracks is so awesome!
Somehow, Gackt reminds me of that "Ninja" streamer guy. Even got his likeness on a similar...ish videogame character.
He sung the opening to the Heisei Kamen Rider's 10th anniversary season, Kamen Rider Decade, "Journey Through the Decade"
“What other games allow you to jump into the air and defy gravity by shooting guns?…”
Me : ehem… chapter one-
I am that guy who bought Bujingai. I preordered it (my Gamestop was pushing it really hard for some reason), and played through every difficulty. Those later difficulties were horseshit because the platforming got super annoying. I think I still have my original copy too.
What Trogdor and Gackt have in common? That is an answer I wasn't expecting to get...
Man hearing Oogie Boogie's revenge theme again made me happy, I had it as a kid and even both me and my brother not understanding it. now I have Soul Robber burned into my brain
How dare you as a fellow nightmare before Christmas enjoyer this is perhaps better then dmc
The wall run in Bujingai was really smooth, it's a shame not many games have wall running these days.
Ninja Gaiden did. Oh, how sad I am that they really messed that franchise up.
FF VII: Dirge of Cerberus soundtrack introduced me to the eccentric Gackt back in 2006
Hi Austin, I recommend the Castlevania lament of innocence on ps2, straight up DMC clone for a sequel to this, ur welcome :)
Also I played bujingai alot back in the day, didnt know or care who gact was then , till I heard the story he single handedly got new fist of the north star made and kept ff7 going. videos on review sites made it look alot like the shinobi ps2 revival which I also really enjoyed, I digged those early 2000s action platformers they were great, thanks for shining a light on it! :)
Also van helsing is an awesome movie, basically the closest we got to live action Castlevania, give it a watch it's alot of fun, it's probably the best plot I have ever seen that convincingly combines Dracula, Frankenstein's monster and the wolf man into one thing, and they threw Mr Hyde in there to boot and Dracula's brides and it all works very well, personally I like it better than the mummy movies.
Was dirge of Cebereus a DMC clone? That's what i remember my friend who played it describing it as.
Not really, it was just a TPS with a optional melee shoved in
The only "DMC-like" aspect of that game was that it had a Devil Trigger mechanic.
The fact that Chaos Legion and Bujingai are unironically better than Devil May Cry 2 will never not be funny to me
When you finally max out Thanatos, you feel like you're the End Boss.
Ah, Chaos Legion, one of my childhood games. I wonder how it holds up
I rented Bujingai from my local Blockbuster 20 years ago.
You left out Transformers Devastation which is a underrated gem that everyone should play.
To be fair he did say he was leaving Platinum off the list since that would be too easy.
I used to play the shit out of the Xbox Van Helsing demo that came bundled in with movie. Never played the full game though.
Not fully a DMC clone (lack the style combo part) , but Anima : Gates of memories is quite fun.
Dishwasher Dead: Vampire Smile Took a kinda DMC game and added magnificent ranged combat to its already stellar melee. And it has dashing, quick weapon swap, and you play as two siblings.
This man really showed Asagi
