the helicopter still haunts my nightmares to this day. despair is sadly just one of the many, many emotions it brings up every time i see it's...uh, face? truly horrifying.
But it gave me an idea for one of the few _acceptable_ references to DMC2 that DMC5 could've done: Have Dante run into an attack helicopter and become pissed when Nero swoops in to easily defeat it with his Devil Breaker.
While watching I was thinking "haha what if you did this but in DMC4 as Lady" and then I realized technically that could be possible but it'd be probably the worst thing imaginable
i think you just gave off the most genius suggestion for dmc4, since i was honestly stuck trying to figure out a dumb challenge for that game. the issue is i am now stuck figuring out if i should thank you, or hate you.
Better question yet, why play any DMC2 challenge run? Why do this game, which is widely considered the worst one in the series? I'd probably go mad playing...
If not for the style system and the two worst monsters in the game (chopper and chaos), I would have gladly used sword only. I absolutely love melee, and can easily use it for everything. The guns feels so useful and forced in this game though that I simply felt no choice but to use them at times. Also tbf, being forced to use everything in your arsenal can be good, since you learn to actually have fun with everything instead of stuck to a single way of playing. But this game goes too far in one direction at times.
I was literally bamboozled as I thought this was a 1 million+ views type of video when it appeared on my timeline and even more after watching considering how it was able to keep me entertained from start to finish, damn bro, you deserve my subscription
btw, I don't have any specific suggestions, but I really think you'd be able to pull out more views if you did something else with the thumbnail, might as well just be me tho
any suggestion seriously helps and thank you a ton! i feel like one of my weakest areas at the moment is dealing with thumbnails since i'm always stuck trying to figure out the best thing to fit with the video, so i easily understand how changing that up could be very good. it's seriously amazing for me to hear that you enjoyed it, and i am hoping that whatever i put out next is able to do just as well or better than this!
@@SquaredNullas someone else who genuinely enjoyed the video, I've got a bit of experience when it comes to designing thumbnails, so if you'd ever want my help just give me a shout
This game is a guilty pleasure of mine its fascinating how it was completed in only 4 months they had left (Itsuno was put in charge of it late in development all they had was the crappy stinger done lol) and it laid the ground work for weapon switching and trickster for 3 which became the series staple. And honestly i had fun toying around with some of the hidden combat mechanics when not gunning everything down.
i still to this day find it absurd how, despite all the flaws dmc2 had, it still put forwards many important ideas and such for the future games in the series. and just as you mentioned, this is on top of the strange combat stuff that's in the game with sword combos and the like. it's super weird just to look back more on the details of this game, but it's kind of cool to be honest.
@@SquaredNullfor those/ya'll who criticized dmc 2 for no real reason and can't even prove that you can gun everything would play the same old game dmc 3 to 5 its sad the gaming community is horrible gaming us dead 😂
I agree I love this game as a kid and I played the crap out of it because it was the only game we had at the time. I really enjoy it. Would be nice if they made a remake of it
The fact that DMC2 has THREE bosses that you can realistically only hit with guns (Infested Chopper, the moth, and Trismagea), really goes to show how rushed the game was. Just look at Griffon in the first game. Yeah he was primarily in the air, but if you stun him he'll get knocked over giving you an opportunity to wail on him with melee. Bit that boss stun mechanic just doesn't exist for those bosses. Even though it would make the most sense for it to apply to them
if the devs had simply programmed in some sort of more consistent melee opportunities for the three you mentioned, the game wouldn't have that many issues boss wise. i mean, obviously there's still the issue that a lot of enemies just outright fly, and dante's aerial attacks are a bit iffy. it really does suck, since the original dmc being more grounded helped it a ton and let players better choose how they wanted to play, even in griffon's fight.
This reminds me of how _Bayonetta 2_ of all gave me uncomfortable flashbacks to DMC2. There are a couple bosses you can only really attack with guns, but they're part of a on-rails segments so it's not _too_ bad. Then you fight Not-Phantom, and even though the fight takes place _on the ground_ he never really bothers to come close, so you're just trading shots from afar
Trismaga can actually be hit with your sword, when they go for a contact attack, even if yeah the intented way is to fire I 100% the game not too long ago, and it was fine, mostly a boring CBT
The main problem with melee in DMC2 is that it takes forever for Dante to roll/dodge after any sword swing. There's no such problem in any other installment, it's just this one. You can clearly see that an enemy is attacking you with super telegraphed attack, yet you can't do anything because you're stuck in any melee animation you're doing. I'm not talking about dodge cancel obviously, as DMC games don't have that. I'm just talking about how goddamn long it takes Dante to recover after an attack. I guess you can cancel those post-attack recovery animations in other DMCs, but in 2 you have to wait for Dante to return to neutral state completely. This design flaw further enhances the use of guns in this game, as they don't have any commitment animations to them.
i completely agree with all of that. dante's attacks are extremely clunky in this game, and it makes it so annoying to actually react to an enemies attack at all. it's really weird, though, as trish in this game, for whatever reason, has dodging more akin to that of dante from the first game, and as such is able to at least react somewhat better than the other two characters in dmc2. if they simply had made the sword attacks allow for rolling at a more proper time, this never would have been an issue.
@@SquaredNullthat's because Trish and Dante's DMC1 costume retain DMC1 combat and combo system, that's actually really cool and it becomes a far better game (though still trash tier)
The other issue is that the guns have been made much easier to gain style points on, allowing you to just shoot a bunch and get an s rank against enemies easily. It shifts the focus away from the up close fast paced combat into becoming a tedious shooter with bullet sponge enemies.
yeah, it is really interesting going back and either watching or playing a game that you remember so fondly when you were younger. regardless of if the game isn't the best or of it's flaws and all of that, there's still some sort of attachment to it in a nice way, and i've always found that to be cool about games regardless of how they're seen.
@@SquaredNullthats me with Dark Souls 2. Terrible souls game, but i like it cause it was my first and i think it has some of the best art direction out of the trilogy.
@@shadowpoolgaming4769 I was mature enough to appreciate the challenge by the time DMC3 came out XD "Normal" can also be relative depending on which release of the game you're playing. The original Western PS2 release actually rebranded the difficulty setting so that you _start_ with what was "Hard" in the Japanese version.
a dmc2 remake would be amazing to see. the enemy designs were seriously one of the cooler things about the game, but they kind of fell flat due to the rest of the game just being a bit iffy. hopefully at some point they at least consider a refreshed look at this game, as it would be great to see what they could do with the newer engines as well as experience from the other games and all that.
Man the designs and art direction in this game is seriously unique, their is like a certain weight to enemies that i really like and oh yeah the most useful dt usage ever.
seriously, the entire artstyle used for this was honestly pretty cool, and i hate that the game didn't manage to back all of that up with a more fluid loop. and, yeah, the dt in this game is actually absurd. i really wish that the entire amulet system could have been worked on more in future games to add an element of customization to the entire devil trigger system. honestly, it's interesting just looking back on the qualities of this game, to be honest.
@@SquaredNull Without a doubt the best part of the DT to me is the Air Raid aka flight. In other DMC's it's just a cool trick you can pull off if you pour enough cash in it, but here it's an integral part of level exploration, with super-smooth controls to boot. Also the amulet system would be _amazing_ if it'd also let you customize the _look_ of Dante's DT form (much like how he'd look differently in DMC3 depending on the weapon equipped)
the one time dante's never-reloading guns stopped working has to happen in the one city coincidentally infested by helicopters and tanks AND he forgot more bullets in the cab. what an actual nightmare...
Griffon is in that fight because Argosax the chaos was SUPPOSED to have the powers of every demon in the underworld(only the bosses though for some reason?) which at the time included dmc1 bosses(idk if it has nightmare) and dmc2 bosses
i didn't really think i'd get a lore accurate response to this, but it's quite insightful to know that the actual reason is basically that. griffon finally has a reason to be partying it out over there. thanks for the info!
Being the respectful guy he is, Dante despite having a sick pair of custom pistols and three other guns, he only shot them once. What an honourable gentleman, he should serve the order of the sword. Oh and lovely video, I like your style
ty so much! yeah, i am so glad that dante went through all of the trouble to obtain some of the best ranged weaponry available, but is still a vocal pacifist (so long as it comes to guns just don't look into his thoughts with swords plz).
The first battle theme is "Shoot The Works", couldn't be more ironic if you tried, also, the devs definitely shot their works when they were done... I jest but, somehow, i love this game
this game may be a jumbled mess in a few ways, as well as having songs with some very interesting names, and the devs may have not been perfect, but at the end of the day it still is a devil may cry game, and for that reason i also have some love for it. it also has dante, though, so then again it is hard not to at least like *one* part of it.
so bad news! you've inspired me to replay this game using this challenge. keep me in your thoughts and prayers anyway love the video, love the editing, i'm excited to see more from you! :]
i am so, so sorry i've done this to you. but at the same time, thanks for your kind words! jeez i'm so conflicted right now. anyway, best of luck in your suffering!
tbf, there are numerous things i could have done to increase the appeal of this vid like actually condensing more of it down to shorter and overall better length so it somewhat makes sense to me. even then, six months is def awhile and i can't imagine myself what even reminded you of this. but regardless of all of that, ty for at least thinking about it!
Ok so imagine a challenge in dmc5, where each character has a unique restriction. Where Nero is locked to one weapon type, and Dante to another, or you could go through all of v’s levels with one guy (I forgot what they’re called, traumas?)
i know for a fact that dmc5 is going to be pretty fun to brainstorm what challenge i'd like to do when i get to that point, or challenges in the case that's there's multiple things i'd like to commit to. i didn't actually think about the idea of locking yourself to a single weapon (or i guess 'weapon' in V's case), so thank you a ton for the great suggestion!
You're underrated and deserve more attention! Anyways, DMC2 is still desperate for a remake because of the many production issues. I couldn't brag about many appreciating this game in spite of it's flaws, so that's good. DMC2 isn't the worst 'third person shooter' of 2003, that goes to Drake of 99 Dragons smh.
if capcom were to go back to the devil may cry games and do the same remake strategy they did for the older resident evil games, i'd be so happy. like, i think the first and third games don't necessarily need them since they're good games in their own rights, but it'd be nice to see what they could do with modern stuff now. as for dmc2, that's a definite. i would love if they could essentially retry everything with this game, because it does kind of deserve a second chance.
Woah the algorithm really blessed me with this video lol, I thought this video has 10k views since the production quality is really good lol, hopefully more of your future vids gets more views
thank you! i'm honestly glad to hear that the video is getting some reach, more than i expected honestly, and i am definitely hoping to make more stuff going forwards. i am mostly worried about whether or not i can have the same or better quality than something like this, but it really does help hearing stuff like this, so thank you again!
The only time the demons in 2 become an issue is in DMD. Were getting hit once means getting knocked around like a pinata. And dont get me on the bosses.
i agree with that, yeah. unfortunately, there's like no difficulty in dmc2 bar the highest difficulty due to how minimal the changes are from normal to hard, and even to an extent with some enemies with hard to dmd. the bosses are definitely a lot more rough to deal with on dmd regardless, but it's definitely more of a hassle when you hit that top difficulty stuff.
yeah that pretty much summarizes the feeling of the entire thing. it probably doesn't need to be said, but some things are best left in the 'meme' category and that's it.
thank you for saying that! i am hoping to do more challenge videos like this one since it was generally both a really interesting and fun process, and there's a ton of other things i'd like to try with other games of this specific series as well as other stuff outside of this.
yet again, this game just contains some of the strangest things that just aren't mentioned at all and i have no clue why it's like this (though it is dmc2 so maybe that's actually somewhat self-explanatory in hindsight).
I swear DMCVI better at least MENTION Lucia, she's so cool That they didn't do the Ladies Night DLC is criminal and they should absolutely rectify that in VI and add Lucia to the mix if she isn't just in the base game
it's seriously so disappointing that lucia just straight up never appears outside of the second game. she's a character that easily would have deserved more work put into it as well as more screen time. if dmc6 doesn't end up at least talking about what happened to lucia and such, i would be so let down. now if she was some sort of playable character in a future game? that, admittedly, would be really cool...
I salute you sir. Not only for playing through this game without guns. But just for playing it more than once. No man should ever put them self through that kind of hardship. Didn't even know I could disable targeting would have saved me so much annoyance.
i thank you for the appreciation given, though whether or not it is truly deserving, i do not know. i am still horrified to know that i may have to revisit this game for a few more things in the future, but your words of encouragement are surprisingly... _motivating_ . also, yeah, as a side note, for some odd reason target disabling exists, but i didn't even know that either until i was doing a more completionist playthrough and read it somewhere online. the game is really weird in so many ways, i guess.
@@SquaredNull Well, good luck with any future plans you have for this game. Always fun to see a game like this deconstructed. Would love to see you cover the rest of the series with some fun challenge runs. And yeah this game is weird. I mean just look at the combo system. It took me half a playthrough to figure out how it worked and I still think it's random on what does what.
even though i do dislike certain parts of the game, i still have a few memories of it that aren't exactly negative either. which is kind of weird, all things considered, but tbh looking back on my first playthrough of it i still remember a few parts, mostly certain cutscenes, pretty fondly. regardless of all of that, thank you for saying all of that! it truly helps me to hear stuff like that.
For once, RUclips recommended a really good video. I applaud you for not only playing through what can only be called the greatest Superman May Cry 64 game ever made, but also for making such a great video on it. Kudos to you, a sub and wishes for your channel to grow as soon as possible. You deserve it. :)
i think you described the game in probably the perfect way possible, and i thank you so much for that. also, thank you for just generally being so nice to both me and the video, as it's really helpful to hear stuff like that!
you know, i was trying to think through possible things i could do for dmc3, and i did not even realize that having royal guard as your only source of damage would actually make for a really interesting challenge idea. i might have to keep this suggestion in mind, thank you!
@@YriOffTheNet oh god no why. please, vergil, i normally love you, why do you have to exist like this at that time...and the leech enemies?!? whyyyyyyyyyy...
i honestly do really like all the sword designs in this game, and even though i'm a sucker for the classic rebellion action here, vendetta is def a really solid sword too.
i don't think you really missed much by skipping this one. it admittedly has some issues and flaws here and there, and sadly the interesting elements of the game don't outweigh it enough to make me suggest. and yeah, anyone who actually gets through the game deserves some sort of medal.
Well it took me less than 3 hours to beat on my first and only playthrough (If it was any longer I would have stopped playing) and it wasn't really hard. Just boring and frustrating. It is one of the 3 worst games I've ever beaten. there are a few things I like about the game. Like Double Jump just being apart of your base move set. Majin Devil Trigger is cool. The dodge existing... that's about it. I'd say give it a shot if you own the DMC HD collection, just to get a proper taste of the pain. Just don't go tracking down a PS2 copy.
tbh, i do feel as if some parts of the game are definitely underrated. games are already very subjective on who plays them regardless, so it makes sense why certain parts can easily be appealing. thanks for your thoughts on this, regardless!
Funny thing: I went through the entire DMC series before actually starting DMCV for the first time a couple years ago. It was the first time I actually seriously started playing DMC. Upon arriving at THIS game, I did the exact opposite of your challenge. I used only Ebony and Ivory because I already knew how extremely effective they are with juggling potential against all enemies in the game. What made me sad is I had to break this because of the section at 22:40 in the video because the guns don't do enough damage to kill all the enemies in enough time, even when fully upgraded. But after that section, it was back to nothing but shoot-bangs. My sister watched me play because she was already hardcore into DMC and loved the series and she wanted to get me into it and follow my first journey through the series. I can't accurately described how annoyed with me she was that I was doing this.
hearing all of this really makes me want to see if there could be some potential way to do a true guns only challenge, but the timed segment would seriously make it a pain. it is awesome to know that you decided to go through dmc2 with a bit of a fun challenge like that, and it probably made it a bit more enjoyable just having something neat to do.
@@SquaredNull Wasn't really challenging. Ebony and Ivory seriously nullify a lot of the challenge IMO because of how easily they juggle all the enemies. Only time it was a challenge was that timed segment. Only reason I tried that was because I saw the Super Best Friends' playthrough of DMC3 that starts out with DMC2. It ends with the first enemy encounter and Woolie just shooting them while standing still and then it fades out with DMC3's title screen going. It was hilarious.
You were preoccupied so much by whether or not you could that you didn't stop to think if you should... Jokes aside, you did an impressive job! it's nice when RUclips recommendations actually shows you a great video like yours, from such a small channel too, you earned a subscriber
i'm beginning to realize that impulsive behavior shouldn't be appraised in my case after all of this. but then again, i am sure it was somehow worth it. regardless, thank you so much for all that you've said! i'm glad that it was enjoyable to watch, and i am seriously hoping to continue making content that manages to hold up just as well or even better than this.
Bro i really enjoyed this video! you need to make a full series of all dmcs if you can! damn bro you were truly motivated on this run, you deserve my subscription, good luck with your channel!
thank you, seriously! it absolutely brings joy to me to know that you enjoyed the video! and to answer more on future dmc videos, i 100% have plans for them, and i am hoping to be able to eventually do at least a video on every other game in the series or possibly even more for the individual games. regardless of that, i need to once again thank you for saying all of that, as it massively helps with motivation! ps. i am wishing you the best of luck with dmc3, and i hope you've enjoyed the experience!
@@SquaredNull I have some ideas for you to do some videos! like maybe do a only gun run on every dmc or like this video no gun on every game, only 1 style on dmc3/dmc4/dmc5 (i dont know if dmc1/dmc2 has style mechanics) or play with one type of combo/weapon etc well you have potential with your channel friend! wish you the best with your channel, i will watch every video i can! (ps : i still didnt defeat the boss rush.) (ps v2 : you gotta motivate yourself with that motivational chair and power drink)
When I was a child, I loved DMC2 and didn't imagine why this game got so much hate, then, as an adult, I know why I prefer to play DMD mode in DMC1 than ever playing a single mission of this game again
it's kind of weird how our perceptions on games are warped compared to when we were younger, but sometimes i guess it actually does make some sense. i definitely agree with the sentiment. dmd in dmc1 still has an element of fun and a legitimate challenge to it (i still hate you nightmare 3), so i at least can yearn to play that over again.
Honestly, I grew up playing DMC2, as my first exposure to the series. As a young teen 13/14 years old, I enjoyed it. But now I just play it for completion and nostalgia, and don’t mind it as much as others do.
@@TonyRedgrave01 for me, DMC2 was just a fever dream, nothing really makes sense, but I loved when I was a child. I love every DMC game, even this one, but a little less after the platinum, it's bad but it has a place in my heart, but I wouldn't play this abomination
I felt the same way. I loved the atmosphere of DMC1, but I didn't have the patience to get good enough to really enjoy it. Then DMC3 came out right as I was mature enough to "get it"
i honestly should have just made the entire video just the infested chopper and that's it. pretty much summarizes the challenge well enough anyway. probably.
I only died once in dmc2 and that was in the fight with nefasturris. It fell over so I thought that was an opening to do big damage so I popped devil trigger and went in only for it to fire a giant laser that killed me almost immediately... I was not happy. Great vid btw very entertaining hope to see your channel blow up someday
yeah, dmc2 was a pretty easy game in terms of enemy difficulty and complexity and all that, and it sucks that the higher difficulties don't alter too much except with certain bosses. i feel like most deaths are likely due to sudden large spikes of damage anyway, like you said. thank you for mentioning both this and the last part, it's great to hear all of this and i am seriously hoping to be able to put out more stuff people find enjoyable!
Fantastic video, your editing and writing/voiceover are really good and I'm excited to see what you do next regardless of whether it's in the challenge run format or not
thank you! it still means a ton to me to hear stuff like this, and i'm really hoping to make some more videos both within and outside of the challenge area!
i honestly wish i knew myself, but this game just doesn't make sense sometimes. well, that, or maybe i am the *epic faker* everyone should be afraid of...
it was during this entire challenge run that i also learned a few weird things about the entire melee system too. the fact that directional inputs during certain parts of a string change up what attacks you do (not even counting the changes done in devil trigger as well) is super odd but also something i've found to be pretty interesting about the game
I decided to play the games in order and I heard about how bad 2 was. I tried my best to be stylish with low gun use, get all collectibles, and use all characters, but I just couldn't because the game bored me to death so I just finished Dante's story and I haven't touched it since
i cannot blame you for deciding to abandon it like that. but hey, you managed to finish at least one of the stories, so that's already commendable considering the game in question. i honestly don't remember why i played DMC2 after going through the series in order as well, but i guess after hearing how bad it was, i just kept telling myself 'you know, it can't be *that* bad'. apparently i was underestimating a lot about the game.
@@CoarseChuck i so badly do not want to ever do lucia on must die again solely because of that stupid fish boss you have to face off against in those cursed underwater levels. worst part is, i'm scared i might return to try a challenge with lucia's story, and if that ever happens, you'll know i've most definitely lost what sanity i had left.
god it's so cool dante decided to make a guest appearance in devil may cry 2 from the devil may cry hd collection which includes dante from the devil may cry series
Love this video man, pure beauty. I.. don't hate Devil May Cry 2. I actually kinda like it. Not because it's good, no, but because of what it brought to the series. Like how Majin DT turned into Sin DT in 5, the introduction of instant weapon switching, etc. Also his coat objectively slaps.
despite my very mixed feelings on dmc2, there's no doubt that it did bring some good things to the series. majin form being the original sdt, an expanded combo system, etc. just shows that it did help a ton with the direction of the games even if it, itself, was flawed in some ways. also, ty for your compliments and such, it is honestly amazing to hear that you enjoyed it so well!
30:48 I'm going to be honest, I didn't even *realize* that griffon wasn't in the game until now. when I played it for the first time a few weeks ago, I genuinely just assumed that I had fought it in a previous mission, and just forgot about it because it was that easy of a boss. As for why they included it, maybe they originally intended Griffon to be the mission 5 boss instead of the chopper. Would make sense, considering the Infested just... show up out of nowhere and are never relevant after mission 5.
that's actually a fair idea for explaining why griffon could be there if not including the weird lore that could explain it offscreen or such. and yeah, i honestly sometimes forget griffon even exists in that fight even if i'm replaying the game (for whatever reason) simply because there's no factoring at all for him existing there. still kind of a weird thing overall, though.
Lucid Enigma sent me and I'm glad he did. Great challenge run that I watched on my lunch break and I'm curious about your other stuff. This challenge run sounded cursed... Actually is but not actually due to Trismagia. The design being so skewed to guns (which can launch without DT) made it very difficult to notice that some enemies actually take significant damage from swords potentially. There is some tech in the game (can't imagine much was intentional) but the game is lucky if someone gives it a single Dante playthrough on normal, not to say people all mastered other games but being remotely well designed helps.
honestly, going through the entire game doing this type of a challenge really shifted a few of my viewpoints on the overall design of the game. the lack of guns forcing me into melee had me figure out how to make use of the game's somewhat strange sword combat system, but thankfully, as you mentioned, Dante's *normal* difficulty playthrough isn't exactly that bad due to the lack of any large changes. now, if i were to return and try it on any of the harder difficulties (especially md), then it probably would be another story. in any case, i'm glad you found it to be a fun thing to watch, and thanks for mentioning your insight on the challenge!
ok, not going to lie, that was actually one of the ideas i had in mind for dmc1, and i'm glad that other people had something like that in mind! i don't quite know if i will commit to that specific challenge for dmc1 *specifically*, since i do have one other plan, but it would fit in so well thematically with this one now that i think about it...
@@SquaredNull I could get my facts mixed up when it comes to the DMC series. I haven't exactly played DMC 1 in a bit now, but knowing the melee weapons are the most reliable sources for the game. (Possibly including the shotgun as well.), I'd assume it would be another nerve-wracking challenge to complete.
@@redisunready oh it probably would now that you mention more about it. it sounds like it would be absolutely dreadful, but probably interesting enough to focus on for a video idea. seriously, it's hard to actually decide what would go well for dmc1, because the game is actually fun enough to make it easier to work towards different challenges and not like a single 'meme' challenge like the one in this video. i mean, any idea for potential future videos helps a ton, regardless, so thank you for your suggestion!
@@randomindividual948 oh yeah, right, dmc had those switches you had to activate... i guess in that case, there'd have to be some rule allowing swords outside of combat in cases where there's a necessary objective or something. i mean, even outside of that fight, i'm fairly certain there's other triggers that can be only activated using melee attacks to, which does make this a bit more iffy to consider. thanks for bringing it up anyway, definitely helps with figuring out a ruleset better for sure.
yeah comparing it to the first game, this one was kind of a bit of a jumbled mess (which to be honest is probably being generous about its state). at least the third game picked the series back up, but jeez you can easily see why this thing is a bit of a stain overall.
I died twice in my dmc2 playthru. Once at the one knight dude when I was shocked by the fact that there was a normal dmc boss in this game so I had to actually play the game and the other in the stupid semifinal boss in hell with multiple faces
the knight guy (whose name i can't remember and am way too lazy to search it up rn) is such a pain to deal with so it makes sense that one of the deaths would be there. now as for the second one...yeah. that's all i can really say about that one i guess. the boss design is sure something in this game.
i honestly can't figure out how i beat it myself. i just kind of remember idling on the menu of the game thinking to myself on why i'm here and then blacked out. apparently when i came to my senses there was a whole bunch of footage that just came out of nowhere, so i just threw that together and here we are! now all i have to do is figure out why i was even on dmc2 in the first place...
@SquaredNull Well, if you need help, just let us know. Nobody ever comes out of Dmc 2 unscathed. You probably have some Trauma that your brain is forcing you to forget to preserve itself. Godspeed.
i'm debating seeing how it would be to do the opposite of this challenge but in the other games. i am not exactly for sure on whether or not it'd make for an interesting enough video overall, but i think i'll at least give it a go for one of the games and see it from there. def thinking about it regardless, though.
with the amount of responses listing this off, it's becoming clear that i should probably at least try to do some sort of thing that incorporates it as well. and yeah, it is a shame because i feel like a good part of that segment is better than dante's, but i honestly felt like with how i structured things it'd be weird to have it in here as well. still, it's definitely worth considering something done with it, so ty for the reminder.
Alot of the melee problems in this game are negated by the use of Devil Trigger. They should have implemented a must style system, so that you don't run out of DT as long as you increase your style rank. The enemies are obviously still bad, but it's a start.
absolutely. if they had a better style approach so that you could properly make use of dt, then it would at least really help out in scenarios where melee is basically (or at least nearly) not a choice. sure, fixing the enemies would also help, but your idea given definitely would be interesting to see in some sort of alternative universe version of this game.
I was hoping they would fix parts of this game in HD, since I like it and find parts of it salvagable and fun. My theory is that they slowed Dante down to make Lucia appear faster in comparison. Playable Trish with Dante moves from DMC1 kinda proves it.
My guess was Griffon was meant to be a boss fight in the game, Hench why he was part of Argosax, or maybe they just had him there to explain what happened to him after DMC1?, kind of sad really, he's killed by his master, then made part of another demon afterwards.
griffon's entire lore makes me feel bad, tbh. does so much for his master, ends up just getting impaled and betrayed last second. the bird didn't deserve this :( but yeah, it seems weird why he didn't have his own individual boss fight like phantom did at least. kind of weird, though speculating that he could have due to the funny fire scorpion/spider mentioned earlier having it would make sense.
well i'm glad that i was capable of managing to find the perfect balance in all of this, especially with the game being dmc2 in question. jokes aside on all of that, thank you so much!

I don't know how, but I ended up really liking the game, even though it's so bad, so much so that I even got the platinum trophy, I really need therapy.
idk why either, but dmc2 has this incredibly weird charm to it. now, is this charm from it being good? no, probably not. but there is definitely some strange pull that it has on myself as well. anyway, i'm sorry to hear you went for a completionist route on the game. i hope your rehab went/is going well :(
yeah, dmc1 can be a bit rough to go through, though strangely enough i'd say that it's probably equal to dmc2 just in different circumstances. i can definitely imagine what points someone could get stuck with...
there's no way that the devs of the dmc series would ever be able to add a motorcycle weapon into the game at all. i mean, if they were, they'd probably go ahead and show off a cutscene only version where dante uses it in like dmc3 or something, since a feel like the third game would work perfectly for it, and then they'd probably, i don't know, add it in as a full weapon in dmc5 where it's like able to be split in half or something like that. but it would be physically impossible for them to ever add something like this, no way...
@@SquaredNull i think you are right its not like its humanly possible to add a black bike that has wheels that act as a chainsaw that give you hyper armor when you attack and can split maybe we will have to wait for dmc6 or 7 for that
the ending of this game will always feel so random and strange to me. Why is griffon there? Who the hell is "the despair embodied"? He doesn't appear all game/isn't even mentioned once and then just ends up being the final boss. Good job on the video! (certainly more interesting than this game will ever be). I thought I was insane for going through the pain of going platinum on this game, but this challenge is significantly worse, especially with bosses like that godforsaken helicopter.
thank you! and yeah, there's a lot of weird things that happen in this game that i feel like are only explained if you go into the *deepest lore* of the out-of-game reading material and such. regardless of all of that, i have to say that the fact you went for platinum and got it is so commendable given the game in question so i also have to applaud you for doing something like that too.
@@TheHateInYourEyes oh, actually, that's a new idea that sounds promising. i hadn't thought about trying to swap weapons mid run like that whenever a new one is found, and i like the idea of doing a challenge that includes some form of variety too. thank you for suggesting this, it seems like a great challenge idea!
either or does sound like a good idea. i have gotten a bunch of dmc2 suggestions, so the good news is there will be a bunch of new things to test out. lucia's story is definitely something i need to try out sooner than later, though, so some sort of challenge for that should come eventually provided i decide not to commit to doing the other games first. thank you for the suggestions, also!

@@SquaredNull well I'm definitely staying to see what you'll create next, ig doing another challenge in a different dmc game would be the logical move, but I'm up for anything as good as this

@@SquaredNull The games were released a mere month apart in Japan, with the _Maniax_ version of SMT3 that included Dante coming a year later. It probably only made sense to use those most recent assets.
it's definitely up there on what to tackle next, for sure. i am seriously hoping that i can complete this game in its entirety soon, but it also begs the question if i'll then have to run through the game with trish too...
@@SquaredNull yeah it's tough I actually did some stages with melee only but sadly not all of the campaign can be completed with melee only. Example when you fight uroboros that used to be Exela. In that fight it is required to use orbital striker and there is no way to use melee on the giant monster because of the range but at las it would be fun to see you do some of the campaign with melee only just modify the rules like you said in the beginning of your video if there is no other option than to use guns then you have to. That also remind of the railway shooter part of the campaign which it can only use the Gatling gun. Anyways I digress. i am sorry to admit, but that's one of the most hilarious bugs i've heard of in a dmc game. that stupid skull room is just one of the worst things ever created in a game at all. but hey, at least dante had some fun during all that time, right?
yeah, i know that there is a bunch of cool special moves that majin form has that aren't exactly 'guns', but my tiny brain during this challenge kept telling myself to never touch anything that isn't movement related or triangle on my controller for melee stuff.

the helicopter still haunts my nightmares to this day. despair is sadly just one of the many, many emotions it brings up every time i see it's...uh, face? truly horrifying.
But it gave me an idea for one of the few _acceptable_ references to DMC2 that DMC5 could've done: Have Dante run into an attack helicopter and become pissed when Nero swoops in to easily defeat it with his Devil Breaker.

Question to ask isn't "Can you beat it without guns" but "Why would you beat it with only the sword?"
unfortunately, there are some questions that the top minds of the world cannot even answer and the one you've given may just be one of them.
Better question yet, why would you use a sword?

"I try to forget as much of this game as possible"
What form of masochism is that.
@@javarousfrazier398Not that serious man
@cathyas3749 it is bc ya'll/got the gay dmc fanbase saying and regurgitating/the same thing without proving its bad
Trismaga can actually be hit with your sword, when they go for a contact attack, even if yeah the intented way is to fire
I 100% the game not too long ago, and it was fine, mostly a boring CBT
First dmc souls-like? Truly ahead of it's time.
@@Pensnmusic I think dark souls protagonists are better in this regard
@@SquaredNullthat's because Trish and Dante's DMC1 costume retain DMC1 combat and combo system, that's actually really cool and it becomes a far better game (though still trash tier)
The other issue is that the guns have been made much easier to gain style points on, allowing you to just shoot a bunch and get an s rank against enemies easily.
It shifts the focus away from the up close fast paced combat into becoming a tedious shooter with bullet sponge enemies.
DMC2 was the first game I ever fell in love with as a kid, and to this day the series is still my favorite. Huge wave of nostalgia watching this
yeah, it is really interesting going back and either watching or playing a game that you remember so fondly when you were younger. regardless of if the game isn't the best or of it's flaws and all of that, there's still some sort of attachment to it in a nice way, and i've always found that to be cool about games regardless of how they're seen.
@@SquaredNullthats me with Dark Souls 2. Terrible souls game, but i like it cause it was my first and i think it has some of the best art direction out of the trilogy.
I played the crap out of it as it was easier than the first, and I liked the better Air Hike controls.
Then DMC3 happened, and I never looked back.
@@EvilDoreshlmao I'm on mission 6 on normal difficulty and I can't pass it dmc 3 can be very difficult
@@shadowpoolgaming4769 I was mature enough to appreciate the challenge by the time DMC3 came out XD
"Normal" can also be relative depending on which release of the game you're playing. The original Western PS2 release actually rebranded the difficulty setting so that you _start_ with what was "Hard" in the Japanese version.
DMC2 needs a full remake. I think demons possessing military vehicles could've led to some cool designs, like flesh transformers.
a dmc2 remake would be amazing to see. the enemy designs were seriously one of the cooler things about the game, but they kind of fell flat due to the rest of the game just being a bit iffy. hopefully at some point they at least consider a refreshed look at this game, as it would be great to see what they could do with the newer engines as well as experience from the other games and all that.
When Dante forgets his ammo bag in the cab....
the one time dante's never-reloading guns stopped working has to happen in the one city coincidentally infested by helicopters and tanks AND he forgot more bullets in the cab. what an actual nightmare...
I don't think argosax would have nightmare's power since it's a bioweapon created by mundus, not an ordinary demon

With Nero you might also add in "No Exceed" and/or "No charged shots" to the challenge. He still got plenty of tools with just one type of arm.
I am one of the crazy people that tried this run back when the HD collection came out and it was exactly as unfun as your video made it out to be.
yeah that pretty much summarizes the feeling of the entire thing. it probably doesn't need to be said, but some things are best left in the 'meme' category and that's it.
You did an incredible job with this one. I'd love to see you do more challenge runs.
thank you for saying that! i am hoping to do more challenge videos like this one since it was generally both a really interesting and fun process, and there's a ton of other things i'd like to try with other games of this specific series as well as other stuff outside of this.

I swear DMCVI better at least MENTION Lucia, she's so cool
That they didn't do the Ladies Night DLC is criminal and they should absolutely rectify that in VI and add Lucia to the mix if she isn't just in the base game
it's seriously so disappointing that lucia just straight up never appears outside of the second game. she's a character that easily would have deserved more work put into it as well as more screen time. if dmc6 doesn't end up at least talking about what happened to lucia and such, i would be so let down. now if she was some sort of playable character in a future game? that, admittedly, would be really cool...

I'd say give it a shot if you own the DMC HD collection, just to get a proper taste of the pain. Just don't go tracking down a PS2 copy.
@@SquaredNull As someone who completed Normal, Hard, and Must Die mode on both Dante and Lucia discs, I proudly accept this medal
As soon as i saw the title i already knew it was wraps when you got to the infested chopper mission
yeah, i'm glad (and horrified) to know you had the same insight into the game that i had. what a dreadful experience...
Great Video! Thought this game was pretty underrated imo.
tbh, i do feel as if some parts of the game are definitely underrated. games are already very subjective on who plays them regardless, so it makes sense why certain parts can easily be appealing. thanks for your thoughts on this, regardless!
Dmc 2 is my favorite Version Of Dante
dante from dmc2 is a pretty good definition of 'cool' and it's a shame we didn't really get to see more of his antics...
Wow this video is amazing. Like seriously, i truly think you need more subscribers.
thank you so much! :D
@@SquaredNull You're very welcome.
We lost bros. We can even get past the Opening scene. 😭😭😭
i just wanted to play my fav game dmc2 featuring dante from devil may cry 4 special addition why must it be like this 😡😭😭

ps. i am wishing you the best of luck with dmc3, and i hope you've enjoyed the experience!
@@SquaredNull I have some ideas for you to do some videos! like maybe do a only gun run on every dmc or like this video no gun on every game, only 1 style on dmc3/dmc4/dmc5 (i dont know if dmc1/dmc2 has style mechanics) or play with one type of combo/weapon etc
well you have potential with your channel friend!
wish you the best with your channel, i will watch every video i can!

When I was a child, I loved DMC2 and didn't imagine why this game got so much hate, then, as an adult, I know why
I prefer to play DMD mode in DMC1 than ever playing a single mission of this game again
it's kind of weird how our perceptions on games are warped compared to when we were younger, but sometimes i guess it actually does make some sense. i definitely agree with the sentiment. dmd in dmc1 still has an element of fun and a legitimate challenge to it (i still hate you nightmare 3), so i at least can yearn to play that over again.
when i played dmc2 again, i couldn't connect the story, i was just "the f*ck is Dante doing in this ruin? he was in the city like, 5 minutes ago"
Then DMC3 came out right as I was mature enough to "get it"
I just came here to see the infested chopper fight. Good run
i honestly should have just made the entire video just the infested chopper and that's it. pretty much summarizes the challenge well enough anyway.
DMC:POC Dante gameplay be like
way too true.
Fantastic video, your editing and writing/voiceover are really good and I'm excited to see what you do next regardless of whether it's in the challenge run format or not
thank you! it still means a ton to me to hear stuff like this, and i'm really hoping to make some more videos both within and outside of the challenge area!
2:23 WHAT WAS THAT DODGE??? FAKER, WHAT WAS THAT????
i honestly wish i knew myself, but this game just doesn't make sense sometimes. well, that, or maybe i am the *epic faker* everyone should be afraid of...
did this myself a few months ago and i actually learnt alot about the combat of this game
it was during this entire challenge run that i also learned a few weird things about the entire melee system too. the fact that directional inputs during certain parts of a string change up what attacks you do (not even counting the changes done in devil trigger as well) is super odd but also something i've found to be pretty interesting about the game
@@SquaredNull I told myself the same thing that it can't be that bad, I might return to it but I want to get all of the bloody palaces in 5 done first
@@SquaredNull The agony i felt playing dante, lucias on DANTE MUST DIE was endless 😭
the under water levels still make me go insanem...
@@SquaredNull WAAAAAAAHHHH
Featuring Dante from the devil may cry series
god it's so cool dante decided to make a guest appearance in devil may cry 2 from the devil may cry hd collection which includes dante from the devil may cry series
Liked the editing, and the challenge kept me intrigued. Now you must do DMC 1 without using your sword. I don't know lol. Good video still.
ok, not going to lie, that was actually one of the ideas i had in mind for dmc1, and i'm glad that other people had something like that in mind! i don't quite know if i will commit to that specific challenge for dmc1 *specifically*, since i do have one other plan, but it would fit in so well thematically with this one now that i think about it...
I think Nightmare would be difficult (if not outright impossible) due to having to hit the switches.
Had a great time watching this, hope to see more from you
thank you! it means a lot to me to hear that you enjoyed it!
I need more power
and we're supposed to be twins...
"I wouldn't recommend this strategy."
_I wouldn't recommend this game._
I pre-ordered this shit back in the day. What a fall from grace.
yeah comparing it to the first game, this one was kind of a bit of a jumbled mess (which to be honest is probably being generous about its state). at least the third game picked the series back up, but jeez you can easily see why this thing is a bit of a stain overall.
I'm honestly surprised you can beat Devil may cry 2 *at all!* Well done, I don't know how you did this.
i honestly can't figure out how i beat it myself. i just kind of remember idling on the menu of the game thinking to myself on why i'm here and then blacked out. apparently when i came to my senses there was a whole bunch of footage that just came out of nowhere, so i just threw that together and here we are! now all i have to do is figure out why i was even on dmc2 in the first place...
@SquaredNull Well, if you need help, just let us know. Nobody ever comes out of Dmc 2 unscathed. You probably have some Trauma that your brain is forcing you to forget to preserve itself. Godspeed.
I'm glad I got this on my recommended bc I just had the misfortune of playing dmc 2 recently lmao
i'm sorry to hear that's the case. i hope your recovery from all that pain is a quick one. never ending suffering...
im sure everyone says it but would be a cool challenge to see for the other games
i'm debating seeing how it would be to do the opposite of this challenge but in the other games. i am not exactly for sure on whether or not it'd make for an interesting enough video overall, but i think i'll at least give it a go for one of the games and see it from there. def thinking about it regardless, though.
Nobody plays Lucia's disc, it seems.
with the amount of responses listing this off, it's becoming clear that i should probably at least try to do some sort of thing that incorporates it as well. and yeah, it is a shame because i feel like a good part of that segment is better than dante's, but i honestly felt like with how i structured things it'd be weird to have it in here as well. still, it's definitely worth considering something done with it, so ty for the reminder.
My guess was Griffon was meant to be a boss fight in the game, Hench why he was part of Argosax, or maybe they just had him there to explain what happened to him after DMC1?, kind of sad really, he's killed by his master, then made part of another demon afterwards.
griffon's entire lore makes me feel bad, tbh. does so much for his master, ends up just getting impaled and betrayed last second. the bird didn't deserve this :(
but yeah, it seems weird why he didn't have his own individual boss fight like phantom did at least. kind of weird, though speculating that he could have due to the funny fire scorpion/spider mentioned earlier having it would make sense.
I really like the vibes of the video i mean i hate everything about dmc2 but u make me watch it all :)
well i'm glad that i was capable of managing to find the perfect balance in all of this, especially with the game being dmc2 in question. jokes aside on all of that, thank you so much!

The slow ass gate is so slow you don’t need the quick heart to get past it
yeah if that's true, that's some expert level game design by the devs.
I don't know how, but I ended up really liking the game, even though it's so bad, so much so that I even got the platinum trophy, I really need therapy.
idk why either, but dmc2 has this incredibly weird charm to it. now, is this charm from it being good? no, probably not. but there is definitely some strange pull that it has on myself as well.
anyway, i'm sorry to hear you went for a completionist route on the game. i hope your rehab went/is going well :(
Alternate title: DMC 2 but Dante completely runs out of ammo after the first cutscene
now i wish i was smart enough to think of such a fire title beforehand...
9:30 don’t feel bad, i died too because of dat damn chopper
that chopper and it's accursed omnipotent abilities and map wide blades. why do you exist, chopper...
It's really hard, I got stuck when I tried it as a kid, and had to play the impossible dmc 1
yeah, dmc1 can be a bit rough to go through, though strangely enough i'd say that it's probably equal to dmc2 just in different circumstances. i can definitely imagine what points someone could get stuck with...
5:55 does he know
there's no way that the devs of the dmc series would ever be able to add a motorcycle weapon into the game at all. i mean, if they were, they'd probably go ahead and show off a cutscene only version where dante uses it in like dmc3 or something, since a feel like the third game would work perfectly for it, and then they'd probably, i don't know, add it in as a full weapon in dmc5 where it's like able to be split in half or something like that. but it would be physically impossible for them to ever add something like this, no way...
Either the production was such a mess that it affected the writing, or there's some (Japan-only) tie-in manga/novel that explains everything
Hey a small channel with good content 🙂 Hope to see more devil may cry in the future.
As for a challenge perhaps dmc3 gun game? One melee and one firearm. Each time you get a new weapon replace the old one in that slot.
@@TheHateInYourEyes oh, actually, that's a new idea that sounds promising. i hadn't thought about trying to swap weapons mid run like that whenever a new one is found, and i like the idea of doing a challenge that includes some form of variety too. thank you for suggesting this, it seems like a great challenge idea!
maybe try Lucia story without throwing knives as a followup?. Or do a no-melee run to see if guns-only really is THAT much easier
either or does sound like a good idea. i have gotten a bunch of dmc2 suggestions, so the good news is there will be a bunch of new things to test out. lucia's story is definitely something i need to try out sooner than later, though, so some sort of challenge for that should come eventually provided i decide not to commit to doing the other games first. thank you for the suggestions, also!

Being that Dante has an affinity with guns, he never pulled the trigger. He squeezed the trigger.
at this rate, i wouldn't be surprised if dante's ability with guns transcends our comprehension and he can just fire them with his mind. it'd honestly make a lot of sense at this point.
The best thing Devil May Cry 2 did was dmc2 Dante was the one that they put in Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne.
i honestly didn't even know that was the dante that was in that, and i'm extremely surprised that was the one chosen for it. good on you, dmc2 dante.

jeez, now that you mention it, the RE games would be amazing for challenge ideas. but then again, RE5 melee? uh...
