Enjoyed the video! I played through the DMC franchise from beginning to end for the first time this year. Still obsessed with 3 at the moment, savoring DMD mode as I slowly chip through it. I felt absolutely underprepared for just how much I wound up disliking 2, for all the reasons you've already heard and readily acknowledge here. Very nice to hear someone say "yeah you're not wrong about what this game is, but listen: it's cool anyways lmao." Gotta respectfully disagree on Gunstar Heroes and Streets of Rage though, and the sentiment of "repetitive arcade action" as a whole. The strength of arcade action is that it absolutely can serve as mindless explode-y, button mash-y, goof-y, sill-y, but can also be incredibly nuanced and expressive if you spend more time with it. The kind of niche advanced strategies in those games, animation cancels and abuse and all that, is exactly the kind of stuff that inspired DMC3, I'd argue. It's just that DMC3 actively demands you engage with that kind of stuff, whereas arcade beat 'em ups were more than happy to just let you keep spending quarters instead. They're very different games depending on who's playing them, which in and of itself is very cool!
Felt the same about how he said that Gungrave is just mashing square, ignoring the dodging, when to do the gunkata and when not to, the special shots, the melee that can reflect rockets, having to move through the stage in a way that keeps your combo up...
i actually love dmc2 as well. it’s not nearly as good of a hack and slash as the other 2, but i think it’s still a fun action game and the art direction is just so bonkers. i love permanently juggling enemies in midair with gunfire and i think stoic dante is cool even if he’s not as charming. best outfit in the series too, fight me. it reminds me of the second matrix movie. not as good as the first but there’s lots to like and i’m glad it exists
I always loved how unapologetic you are about liking things that are objectively messy and jank. You manage to not sound like a contrarian at all when praising these weird fucked up games. Keep doing your thing Thor. Hope some day do make a rap album
DMC2 is great c: The dark atmosphere is amazing, the game looks really good IMO, and it has one of the best soundtracks ever! Even though I love Dante's personality in the other games, I also love how serious he is here :3 Lucia is great as well, and her Devil Trigger design is absolutely beautiful. The main baddie... eh... That's not that great twt Same as the fact that guns just reign supreme... But atmosphere-wise, and especially musically-wise it is absolutely stunning. Mission Start and Eye of the Wind Lower Town are some of my favorites :D
I'm convinced the definitive DMC2 experience is the Lucia disc. It just feels like Dante was shoved to the forefront of the game late in development. As everyone who has ever played the game has demonstrated, his shit is just busted, his bosses are ???, it beggars belief that this was what they really set out to make. I think they were scrambling to scrape something together for a Dante campaign. Maybe he was intended as a bonus character, like Vergil in later games, something fun to unlock because who cares, but had to make it for real at the eleventh hour. I get the impression Capcom viewed the DMC franchise as an action equivalent to Resident Evil with a rotating cast of protagonists, and this was supposed to be Lucia's game. That bears out if you play both campaigns side by side. Most of the content is shared across both discs, but it all feels better with Lucia - I distinctly remember a lightbulb going off when I tried it for the first time - with Lucia, it actually felt like the enemies complemented her moveset. Her kick combo staggers enemies, breaking their guard and opening them up to the higher damage sword combos. It's not just musou anymore. Unfortunately, players' universal hatred of Dante's disc meant that the vast majority never even put Lucia's disc in their console and so there are probably like a dozen people who even gave it a chance.
Yeah this is pretty much how I felt. Like I still don't really like DMC2 but it really does feel like Lucia's game in a lot of ways and it's super built around her moveset and it makes the game more engaging at least.
There is concept art showing Dante was not even going to be in the game. It originally starred a new male character and was supposed to be open world. Pieces of that open world were cut up into the skyscraper and upper city sections of the final game.
Nice video I wouldn't say that DMC2 was my fave in the series but I remember playing it when it came out and having a good time with it. I was surprised to find out later just how much hate it had from fans of the series. An overhated title for sure, happy to see some love being thrown on it

the mosaic tile texture is actually taken from the mosaics of the alhambra palace in spain. i feel like it's a you kind of building since it's renowned for its architecture, waterworks, and intricate detailing. definitely evokes the sophistifuture aesthetic even though it was built centuries ago
Honestly, this gives me a great moment to play DMC2's advocate and say that I also enjoy the game. The dodging, high jumping and directional combo attacks makes the fight pretty fun for me. And I do like the gothic city setting as well. I would've made a video like this to give some praise to the game, but I never had the guts to do so. That, and I'm practically a nobody in the space of RUclips. Which makes me glad that you'd make this video sharing the same enjoyment of DMC2 as I do. Makes me a slight happier that I'm not alone in liking the game :)
As someone who got the platinum trophy for this game, I can proudly say that my opinions of this game are my own and they're not copied from the rest of the fanbase or from popular youtubers. DMC is my favorite game series, and I am better at it than most people. I'll say this. I agree with Thor when it comes to DMC2 having the best aesthetic and the best Dante design. However, I think it's the worst game in the series because of the bosses. People who haven't played DMC2 will make fun of the helicopter boss, but that's not even the worst fight in the game. The fucking fish that Lucia fights is by far the worst boss in the series and possibly the whole action games genre. God forbid you're playing in DMD and as Trish BECAUSE YOU CANNOT LOCK ON TO THE DMD FISH BOSS, YOU CAN'T CONTROL THE CAMERA, IT CAN ATTACK FROM OFFSCREEN, YOU SWIM SLOW AS FUCK AND IF YOU'RE PLAYING AS TRISH THEN YOU'RE BETTER OFF RESTARTING THE MISSION AND PICKING LUCIA.
It's also mathematically impossible to get an S rank on the fish boss with Lucia, unless you have the secret mission still available. Lucia simply can't attack it fast enough to build up style. And there's simply not enough enemies throughout the level either, only a couple of mages, which won't give you enough, and a couple of skulls that you can't even afford to hit. In this case, only Trish can do it. She can shoot the fish fast enough to build up style points. Enough to get you an S rank for the mission. Yeah I hate that fish >_
17:48 I think you mean from DmC onward. DMC4 very much has a Resident Evil design with interconnected levels, key items, spooky castle with a secret lab, even has a timed escape sequence with an explosion at the end.
Yeah this video kinda makes it sound like he didn't even play DMC4 lol. It's probably tied with 1 with being the least "modern/urban", taking place in the cool as hell European church town (that does have a few dingy back alleys), jungles, caves, icefields, castles, ice castles, on top of a massive crumbling god-statue and so on. Nothing about it gives me "monster energy" vibes, and it has that sense of adventure that Thor mentioned liking.
Wooooo! Yeah! So glad I'm not alone in this! This video is like a mirror opposite of GamingBrit's Nights vs Klonoa video, a good and positive video I expected from you vs bad negative one I did not expect from him. Both even feature DMC2! I also enjoy the entire series but love 2 and DMC:DMC the most and 3 the least, the opposite of the fandom at large.
I love the DMC series so much that I literally write edgelord power fantasy fanfic about it, so getting a whole video of ThorThoughts(tm) about the aesthetics of the games is incredibly appreciated! Thank you for your service
The start of this video made me realise that I would really love to hear you talk about Quake, I honestly think you'd really appreciate the weird aesthetics it has because it's actually two games that got awkwardly merged together
The Vinesauce fans will descend on this video in masses to say dumb deeemcee2 memes. I am giving you this warning as one of them and an apology in advance
Oh no, Thor, you've never had a Sobe??? Only the pink ones were good tbh, but they were *gooood.* Sorry for your loss Edit: also there is actually milk in one of the pink ones, maybe a couple more but I'm not positive lmao

All thor videos that i watched are soo nice, i like the way the script have some wordplay and some silly rhymes, all comes from the heart man. another great video, thanks alot
One thing the game really needed was letting you shoot while just holding the button down. It also needed a big overhaul, but speaking of the game as it is, and not as it may be, it really needed to let you just hold down the button and shoot.
The aesthetics of this game were always the most appealing to me at the time of release, but I’ve passed on it over the years due to the reputation. Once again you’ve got me scouring local used game shops for a copy in the year of our lord 2024z
Dmc 2 was my first dmc game when i was like 10. I didnt know how bad it was, i thought it was the coolest game ever. The final boss was SO HARD when i was a kid lol
This is so random, Im currently trying to get into the older DMC games (1 and 2) YT recommended me a tone of DMC content and a week later comes my favorite youtuber with this banger hell yeah.
This video inspired me to pick up DMC2 for the first time, and honestly I had a good time. The Gungrave comparison is apt, as while the two aren't exactly the pinnacle of skill-based action games, they're both still really fun to just smash face through. Also, brooding Dark Knight Dante is the best and no one can convince me otherwise.
I defo prefer DMC3 over 2, I still have to admit that the tower in 3 is not a very interesting environment to explore. The whole aesthetic of DMC2 (especially early game) I always thought looked nice, even though I never thought to replay it.
Next to that sick jacket, the inclusion of customizable Devil Triggers was one of the coolest things that never came back in any capacity and it makes me so sad

That Patreon segment was so cool! I think its my favorite one you've ever done.
DMC2 is great. It taught me to be a cynical bastard from a very young age. Also the building demon was kinda cool.
Real gamers don't skip Devil May Cry 2. That's just a fact.
As someone who 100%'d DMC2 for the full HD collection achievos... yeah GOD I HATE THE FISH. I DESPISE THE FISH.
I know that Gackt is very popular, but I'm never going to get used to hearing other people say his name out loud.
We can call him "Genesis" instead.
Wooooo!
I like your framing of DMC2 in that edgy PS2 action game lineage. Great video!
I love the DMC series so much that I literally write edgelord power fantasy fanfic about it, so getting a whole video of ThorThoughts(tm) about the aesthetics of the games is incredibly appreciated! Thank you for your service
Always a pleasure to have the Thor cinematic outdoor clips + new album teaser
Thor was the guy in vinny's chat to bait him into playing dmc2 for the charity stream
Bro that lil pikachu patreon cut was so sick.
Dante's design from Dmc2 is still the slickest, and it's the one featured in SMT Nocturne.
Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series, legendary meme
SMT Nocturne! That‘s the one, where Dante is the only one to survive a fall from a skyscraper completely unscathed😮

The mostimpressive thing is that youve managed to keep the tail attached to that plastic pikachu figure.
The start of this video made me realise that I would really love to hear you talk about Quake, I honestly think you'd really appreciate the weird aesthetics it has because it's actually two games that got awkwardly merged together
Please make 1 million more videos. Any theme, subject, game, thought, anything.... Just keep em coming!
The Vinesauce fans will descend on this video in masses to say dumb deeemcee2 memes. I am giving you this warning as one of them and an apology in advance

Good I hope more people come to this video to discover the greatest RUclipsr of all time

Came to the comments before even watching the video to see if anyone had said this. Not disappointed.

Oh no, Thor, you've never had a Sobe??? Only the pink ones were good tbh, but they were *gooood.*
Sorry for your loss
Edit: also there is actually milk in one of the pink ones, maybe a couple more but I'm not positive lmao
Stunning and brave video. I had a feeling this would happen sooner or later.
This video was a breath of fresh air on DMC2, well done!

DMC2 loves you too ♥️
It's always interesting seeing what topic they come up with during the wait between videos
the camcorder pikachu sections are so beautiful. something about them just hit me in a weird good way.
thor is such a good person, idk why but they give me some really good vibes. I really aprecciate the apreciatiation for games as art without thinking much only about game mechanics and more about vibes and feelings, i dont care if people think its imature, i just love to watch videos that are written with such unique and personal style. All thor videos that i watched are soo nice, i like the way the script have some wordplay and some silly rhymes, all comes from the heart man. another great video, thanks alot
It's nice to see love for Devil May Cry 2 and Drakengard 3 for once! I love both of those games too.
Really enjoyed this video, had great vibes throughout :> flexing on us and willem with the dirge of cerberus chains goddamn
You are my fave youtuber of all time btw, just wanted to tell you that
Sepultura? I'll take that as BRAZIL MENTIONED 🎉
I love the dedicated dodge roll button in this
I like pikachu's little day out. Nicely edited
One thing the game really needed was letting you shoot while just holding the button down. It also needed a big overhaul, but speaking of the game as it is, and not as it may be, it really needed to let you just hold down the button and shoot.
subscribing because DMC 2 is my favorite too
The anime intro with Pikachu is a masterpiece.
And DMC2 was my introduction to the series and I always loved it.
Couldn't find a more 'glass half full' guy on the planet
Cool video. However, I probably won't be playing this because I've tried the DMC games and I personally couldn't get into them.
Yooooo, this game is GOATed for it's aesthetics, thanks for highlighting it
Game looks amazing in screenshots. Definitely peak PS2 aesthetics.
It is the only finished part of the game yes.
No
I'm glad you can enjoy the slog, cause I couldn't, man. I legit almost fell asleep twice playing this game.
The aesthetics of this game were always the most appealing to me at the time of release, but I’ve passed on it over the years due to the reputation. Once again you’ve got me scouring local used game shops for a copy in the year of our lord 2024z
I respect the love for the vibes, and my other reason for liking this is that it brought us SMT3 Dante, arguably his coolest version.
This is why I keep coming back to Thor's videos. Unique takes I can't get anywhere else.
Dmc 2 was my first dmc game when i was like 10. I didnt know how bad it was, i thought it was the coolest game ever. The final boss was SO HARD when i was a kid lol
Love your videos so much❤ thank you for what you do
This is so random, Im currently trying to get into the older DMC games (1 and 2) YT recommended me a tone of DMC content and a week later comes my favorite youtuber with this banger hell yeah.
I was just thinking about this youtuber, glad there's a new video
This is definitely a stance on some matter.
ngl I always felt like you were a dmc2 enjoyer from your videos
This video inspired me to pick up DMC2 for the first time, and honestly I had a good time. The Gungrave comparison is apt, as while the two aren't exactly the pinnacle of skill-based action games, they're both still really fun to just smash face through. Also, brooding Dark Knight Dante is the best and no one can convince me otherwise.
I defo prefer DMC3 over 2, I still have to admit that the tower in 3 is not a very interesting environment to explore. The whole aesthetic of DMC2 (especially early game) I always thought looked nice, even though I never thought to replay it.
Well, some people were making a mod to "improve" the combat, so if they finish then you can enjoy both the combat and the exploration.
Next to that sick jacket, the inclusion of customizable Devil Triggers was one of the coolest things that never came back in any capacity and it makes me so sad
