    Jesus, Ruff Trigger. I remember that a friend of mine had it and hyped me up to play it. I never played Ratchet and Clank, so had no idea that it was a rip-off of something else. I also remember seeing a magazine at the time giving it a 6/10 and calling it generic. When I told my friend about it, he went nuts "GENERIC? OH OK, THEY CALL A GAME WITH ALL THESE COOL GUNS GENERIC, BUT THE SIMS, WHICH IS JUST PEOPLE GETTING FED, GETS A SUPER HIGH SCORE!" 😂😂😂 the Playstation 2, early 2000's childhoods...

      To be fair, he is both right and wrong. In terms of playing a shooter versus a sandbox life game, yeah the shooter might be more exciting. But also the Sims has stuff like random aliens and other crazy stuff too, and Ruff Trigger is in retrospect terrible compared to other games. But considering what you mentioned and implied about the media you two had consumed at that point, I totally understand your friend. It just is amusing looking back at stuff and finding the uneducated logic of children and nostalgia even of mediocre games. I mean, I liked stuff like Spore Arena on DS, and played and beat Soul Calibur V and loved it despite it being not very liked in the fanbase. Opinions are fun because people can like a game regardless of if it is any good or not.

    My brother and I got Biomutant at launch. We didn't have Ratchet and Clank to compare it to, but the cracks still showed quite a bit over the course of our playthroughs. One of the problems I noticed was that they've got all of these cool weapons and powers, but you can melt anything and everything almost instantly by just using an auto-rifle. They had comparable per-hit damage to other weapons, but had far superior rapid fire. I also thought it felt odd the way everybody talks about you trying to preserve life, while you go around slaughtering almost everything that breathes until you've turned the world into a lifeless wasteland. It had some cool elements that I did like, but it also admittedly did have a lot of flaws.

    Have you played Sunset Overdrive? It was that Xbox One exclusive that Insomniac made. There's a PC port too, though the game feels like it was made for a controller. The movement is pretty input heavy, and constantly pressing various keys for both traversal and evasion cramps the hell out of my hand after a while. I bought it on Steam a while back, and it's pretty good stuff.
    The combat feels almost the same as Ratchet and Clank, and the basic gameplay loop revolves around using the movement system to navigate through an open world that's basically just a big-ass, grind rail combat arena full of collectibles. You fight swarms of enemies while you try to keep your movement combos going. Higher combo ratings activate a variety of buffs, which you can freely mix and match to suit your preferred method of play. The weapons are just as over the top as Ratchet and Clank, and they can also be leveled up and customized with interchangeable weapon mods. If you've played Ratchet Deadlocked, it's the exact same weapon system.
    It lays most of its cards on the table up front. The core gameplay loop in hour 1 isn't that much different from hour 100. Sure, you'll get better at it, more efficient and flexible as you get familiar with the mechanics, but if you aren't the type of person that would spend hours just messing around with a game solely for its mechanics, you'll likely find it to be an extremely repetitive experience sooner or later. It's got charm and a sarcastic edge that I liked, but humor is subjective and I didn't replay the game for the jokes. There's tons of collectibles and treasure maps to make finding them easier, but the sheer volume of challenge missions to do make the game a hard pass if you're the completionist type. I'm not saying you won't enjoy the game if it doesn't immediately hook you, but think of it this way; If you played Skate 2 or 3, SSX, or the old Tony Hawk games, did you spend a few hours playing them or a few *hundred* hours playing them?
    And yeah.. it's basically Tony Hawk's Pro Shooter, and it's got the vibe that it was a passion project for Insomniac. Jump good, flip, bounce, vault, grind, wall run, air dash... just keep the combo going and keep shooting. If it's your style, it's a good time.
    A warning for those who are curious about trying it, there's a notification bug on the Steam version. Every time you open the main menu, a note pops up about corrupted save data. The corrupted data takes up a slot and can't really be deleted (it just pops back up again every time I've gone back to the main menu), but my actual save files haven't been corrupted... yet. I completed the campaign and DLC stories, the side missions, and a few optional challenges, and spent at least few dozen hours just wandering around with no issue. Maybe someone smarter than me can explain what's causing the bug, but it never impacted my experience in a way that actually mattered to me, so I just ignored that shit. Still, other's have claimed to have lost their saves, so I don't want to assume it's just nothing if it's possible that I was just lucky.

    Looking at the title, I was sorta dreading but also hoping to see Haven: Call of the King discussed. It was in development around the same time as R&C though, so I wasn't giving you enough credit for maintaining accuracy.
    If anything, Haven is a 'what if Beyond Good and Evil didn't abandon its ambition to have interplanetary exploration and was a platformer' (though it predates that game too). Its one game I feel is okay to admire on ambition alone ('cos otherwise it's not great); Gamehut (the channel of Haven's director) did a video on it titled '"No Man's Sky" on PS2 at 60 FPS' and it's not as clickbaity as you'd think.

      I still fire up my PS2 on the reg and just picked up Metal Arms for myself for like £3.50. Gutted I've not heard of it until now - I would have got a kick out of it back in the day. Being that I have a chipped PS2 though, I am going to download a couple of the other PS2 titles for giggles. Scaler used to be in every store I went to and it just looked so bad lol

    I actually own Metal Arms; and have completed it. So yeah. Never really saw it as a R+C clone [It had more vehicle focus and predated R+C3 which added a lot more vehicle focus]. But yeah... it's kinda the Dark Souls of 3D Jump-n-Gunners
    Also; do you REALLY want a Metal Arms remaster considering Activision-Blizzard own it and their track record...

    Metal Arms I'd never heard of until Square Eyed Jak picked it up and I loved what I saw.
    Scaler is a favourite of mine. Sure it's safe but the levels, the transformations, the grinding which Ratchet games never get close to in speed which are really challenging and more really do it for me. Monsters Inc Scare Island, Scaler and Wet (not sure about Jersey Devil as Behaviour Entertainment which they are now again due to A2M name) I feel were their best, the rest were alright or bad flash game to DS ports. Having played Scaler with lowest health of 3, 1 bomb and only 1 camoflauge upgrade (no damage, more bombs, more camp time or so upgrades) as a hard mode just like the Ratchet games with no armour it's an interesting time.
    Skylar and Plux was alright for an indie title even if short.
    Was not expecting Biomutant in this video. I always saw it as a Darksiders successor where Darksiders 3 was Dark Souls, Genesis was another isometric rpg and Darksiders 2 needed a better follow up from its RPG open world approach besides being games published by THQ. But I do see the similarities which is probably why I also enjoyed it. To me it did the world features, vehicles and otherwise I just wanted that most open worlds never did it for me. Biomutant deserves more and the reviewers were just db about it. If Biomutant impressed and most AAAs made me snooze it says enough to me for AA and Indies. When Rift Apart disappointed and I appreciated 2016 more even with its issues yeah.
    Ruff Trigger yeah. It's rough alright. It tries but yeah I couldn't get it running through emu and Nitro Rad's review made it clear. I'm interested to try it compared to Iridium Runners.
    Curious if Blinx, or Sphinx (even if more a Zelda clone) counts.

    • @TerrorOfTalos
      @TerrorOfTalos 2 года назад

      How was RA disappointing? The only major complaints I have are maybe it being $70 (not counting sales), arena challenges being overall basic with a few exceptions and lack of new enemy types during the second half but that makes up for it with it's great battlefield design and noticable challenge increase in years which the series hasn't really had since Deadlocked exterminator spread throughout the game instead specific sections.
      Also I'm curious on what makes you appreciate 2016 more after playing it? I mean I only compare that game to the original when it comes to any improvements with the exceptions being the gadgebot puzzles being what GCs should've been.

  • @MatadorMedia
    @MatadorMedia 2 года назад +1

    Biomutant would've been accepted if published as an indie title by the developers, but since THQ actually published the game, it got appropriately shit on for such a high pricetag for such a small game.

    The problem with Biomutant was that it was kinda marketed as a AAA game or with AAA quality, it also had a AAA price, so when people played it and saw that it was not true at all, they got kinda mad about it, and well, they were right in being mad. I think if it was marketed as an indie game or something below AAA the game would be more well received
