I love how all of these come out surprisingly similar to the original, but different enough that you can feel the personal touch. It's cool how someone unfamiliar can hear a song and end up in the same ballpark just by feel.
It's so funny that she assumed the track started with drumless bars and played all of her takes that way, then was confused when the actual track started with drumless bars! "Oh- I think it's without the drums...?"
IMO, rock is pretty much the same all the time. If you are a musician, you get the grasp of it pretty quickly. It isn't predictable when it comes to prog rock, which is made to be challenging, intricate, etc.
I mean if playing in 4/4 constitutes it being similar then yeah, but dynamics, accents and double time parts were all different, so not really similar.
Domino's got nothing to apologize for, she's fantastic. It's such a crazy situation to come into, and she's a great sport about it, having a good time and showing everyone how things can be approached a different way. Hats off.
Yeah, I liked that bit. She does come up with some inspired moments in her versions; I thought similarly when she did that groovy bit of tom work in her Slipknot song, where I think the original was double-bass. She has good instincts and comes up with good variations of what works well.
I haven't play a single drum in my life and I am impressed by these people's talents and their humility. A sight to behold, a sound to enjoy. Drumeo, impressive work!
Domino absolutely kicks ass. Even if her “main” work is safe within simple 4/4 pop songs, she proves here that she can slay even on an uncomfortable track that’s way outside her typical work. Damn those Paiste cymbals sound gorgeous. One thing I absolutely LOVE about Domino’s appearance (and also Greyson’s) is she’s using a very basic kit, with just two toms and minimal cymbals - it doesn’t matter; she still rocks it out, even without the elaborate kits some other Drumeo guests bring to the studio.
I think she missed a lot of the accents and syncopation in the other instruments in a lot of the sections that would really make the drum part fit properly. But you can’t really expect that on a track like this in that short a time.
@@ambiention yeah exactly. Also Brann is one of the main songwriters and shaping the song alongside the drum part which explains how the shifts follow the theme of the vocal changes etc. She's great and a killer drummer but this was a tricky one
@@ambiention Imo you can't expect virtually anything if you're trying to compared to the original. It's interpration as she hasn't heard the drums before.
I think that was really good. I don't know the original so it sounded to me good. Of course in three takes one can't compose the original drum track again but it was really good imho anyways
My fav Mastodon tune. She really captured the overall vibe that Dailor lays down, even picking up on some of the killer machine-gun fills he peppers in throughout this song. This one is a tough ask on just a few takes. Great work!
She's such a great guest. She works so hard to make it sound good. You can really tell she cares about just being a drummer, and how much she enjoys just writing a good drum lick.
I absolutely LOVE this series. Thanks to everyone involved for bringing us some great entertainment Have any of the original drummers responded to these First Time videos yet? I don't recall seeing any but I know I'd love to see their reactions
As a guitar player, I think it would be fun to jam with Domino. She's not afraid to stretch and grow, she obviously loves music and playing drums no matter the style, and above everything else, you can tell she has fun and loves it. Playing with those kinds of people are the best.
I've only been able to see them a grand total of once...and they crushed it. I should add, I had never heard them before the show. I was there for the opener (Quicksand) who I used to listen to in my more wily days of youth. Mastodon impressed mightily.
@@EatingOurPets95 Hell yeah. I've seen it, of course, but what a treat to be there. I've only been able to see them once and it was that co-headliner with Coheed. That's when they played Crack the Skye and I couldn't have been happier.
Saw them last week and they put on a hell of a show. Absolutely loved their setlist. My wife didn't as much because her favorite album is Once More Round The Sun and they didn't play any songs from that album lol. She also isn't really a fan of Gojira but now she at least understands why I like them so much because their set was incredible too.
@mastod0n1 mine was the opposite lol she's not into Mastadon, but ever since seeing Gojira she's really into them. Mastadon did really well too and she said she definitely likes them live. Gojira is just an overall ethereal experience.
I'm not a drummer, not a Mastodon fan, I don't even know in which band Domino is, but I love this series. I loved every episode I've seen. And in this one, Domino's enjoyment is absolutely contagious. I love watching people enjoying what they do. And the song was great, I thoroughly enjoyed the final take.
If you search her name on youtube she’s got a lot of drum covers of pop songs, it’s really fun to listen to and her happy energy really shines through everything she does!
Brann is such a unique drummer, so that makes covering his parts extremely difficult. For someone who's not familiar with his style or Mastodon for that matter, she nailed it!
This is what I was thinking. Brann throws a lot of drum fills throughout his songs in places that might not be expected. So unless you know his style, it is about impossible to replicate his drum part going in completely blind. But she did a fantastic job otherwise.
This is probably my favourite Mastodon song. It made me realise how much the drums can influence the overall feel of the song. I don't feel like she ever quite nailed the feel of the chorus somehow. This was a tough one!
So funny seeing the differences in "active listening" between the drummers. Dirk Verbeuren was taking meticulous notes, recording the structure, always aiming for that one take to knock it out of the park, while Domino's just like "WTF is this? What am I gonna do?" 😂
She's so modest too. She says Brann's part was way better but it was her first time listening to the song and had limited takes. She nails a lot of the same accents Brann does and did such a great job at playing with this song. Definitely not an easy accomplishment. Well done!
She has nothing to "apologize" for, nobody expects any drummer here to simply invent the same track on the first take, it's much more interesting to hear their version and what someone else would do. She was amazing and did a great job!
I'm a guitarist and I love this channel! Thank you for bringing this ray of sunshine - Domino is so bright and talented, not even mentioning how sweet and beautiful she is!🤗🤘🏻🎉🎊
You know how sometimes you watch a chef make an amazing meal out of ingredients that everyone has? This is what it's like watching all these amazing artists create something. Please more of this! More artists from more genres!
This is me watching this right now. As a chef, I love making something my own and thus channel is literally the same thing in music form. Only difference is my art requires ingredients and this requires instruments
It's so nice to see her nail the accents right in the first take, like every drummer in the world has a common language, a connection through the instrument
Domino always "gets it". Even if it is not what the original drummer did - it is always a joy to listen to what she comes up with. I wonder if 66Samus will do a reaction on this one … 😁
I'm a guitar player, and I like this channel way more than other channels with guitar players. Domino is so talented and with a contagious laugh. I envy the band members where she plays.
Her personality is freaking explosive and incredibly endearing, and her drum part was still epic awesome! She did so damn good and what an infectious attitude! This was awesome!!
Domino is really enjoying these Drumeo sessions; in the next video, we'll probably see her dressed as a metalhead with tattoos. It's clear she's really liking the genre hahaha. Good job, Domino!
I think it's because it opens your mind listening to music like this l. Especially if you don't do it in your free time. It's most challenging to play something like Rock or Metal from a drummer's perspective...
Seriously such an insanely fun series to watch. Watching professionals digest the tunes and then rely on instincts AND experience on the fly is amazing to watch! Domino's energy is infectious.
I absolutely love these kinds of videos. Giving a drummer a song they have never heard before and asking them to play a drum beat when they have never heard the track. Please 🙏 keep this content coming! I can’t tell you how much I absolutely love this stuff! You guys kick so much ass!

I love watching their facial expressions as you can see their musical brains going into over-drive, coming up with such beautiful, melodic parts and bringing it all together. Thank you Drumeo, Thank you Domino, you rock!
I like when she hears Bran's drums kick in and says "it's more groovy than I expected." There's a lot of jazz influences in Bran's drumming which makes him one of the most unique metal drummers out there. Honestly it's almost cruel to give her a Mastodon song. But Domino was still awesome.
Way to go girl. As a huge Mastodon fan, you did an amazing job! I loved watching your reaction and admiration for Brann's drumming when you finally heard it 😅 hes one of the best and Im sure he'd be super pumped on hearing your interpretation.
Honestly, I could watch a full series of just her showing the process of learning music shes not framiliar with. Like theres such a groove behind her style and learning process.
My favourite part of this, and why Domino is my favourite person to watch, she says if she doesn't get in on the first go. She needs to listen to it again and again. That is actual confidence. Awesome
Really loved her interpretation. The whole concept of this series where the drummer has to come up with their own part is fascinating; it really showcases how much the drum part can change the whole dynamic of the song.
He is an absolute madman for singing that good and playing that hard in concerts. I saw them over the summer for the third time and managed to have him hand me a drumstick!! Third time's the charm 💪
Almost did. She missed the variation on the kick drum that plays along with the bass. Otherwise, it was pretty solid playthrough of the verse for someone who had never listened to the song before.
I've been a Mastodon fan for years, a fan of Brann Dailor for years, and this is one of their best songs. Dominio, you ABSOLUTELY CRUSHED IT! Not only are you an amazing drummer with an incredible style, you have such a wonderfully positive vibe that you could literally just kick the drum set over and I'd still enjoy the video. But honestly you rocked the hell outta this! The differences between this and the original are obvious, but they're just that: differences. I legitimately love this drum track and I would honestly listen to this right next to the original any day of the week 😃
Domino is such a killer. I absolutely love her attitude and she totally nailed this one. She managed to lay back at the right times and push forward when it was needed. The caveman fill towards the end was sick! Love this series!
She's so awesome. She's happy and good natured and so humble, and she's an amazing drummer. Please consider creating a whole channel just for her, because I could watch her do this all day long. She did an amazing job. The song could be released with her drum part and everyone would still love it!

I know! I love how she apologizes to the fans of the song that she doesn't know the song, lol
She's such a good sport! Humble to a fault, even.
LOVE her attitude towards how she approaches these songs. Def one of my all time fav guest
8:08 probably the most underrated portion of her version. Very well done.
Yeah, I liked that bit. She does come up with some inspired moments in her versions; I thought similarly when she did that groovy bit of tom work in her Slipknot song, where I think the original was double-bass. She has good instincts and comes up with good variations of what works well.
Agree. Such great understanding of S P A C E. Felt great.
Loved it
808 Sounds like a drum machine...lol
She’s incredible. Watching her so shy and timid transform into a confident monster of a drummer in the final take was just flat out incredible.
Easily my favorite guest. I'd watch an entire series of her playing songs she hasn't heard before!
Especially metal. She seems to like it
I haven't play a single drum in my life and I am impressed by these people's talents and their humility.
As someone who’s never heard that song before either, I thought her version was phenomenal.
Nothing wrong with the interpretation. It suited the song. I've never heard the song, it sounded great. Well done.
It's fine but eliminates all the tension and release that makes this song. Not Domino's fault though, her groove for the verse is flawless
Thanks to everyone involved for bringing us some great entertainment
Have any of the original drummers responded to these First Time videos yet? I don't recall seeing any but I know I'd love to see their reactions
This!!! @drumeo
As a guitar player, I think it would be fun to jam with Domino. She's not afraid to stretch and grow, she obviously loves music and playing drums no matter the style, and above everything else, you can tell she has fun and loves it. Playing with those kinds of people are the best.
Seeing her smile on the final take was radical. She was really enjoying the groove. Rock on!!🤘🏾
Huge Mastodon Fan, over 100 shows and counting… she did an amazing job
I've only been able to see them a grand total of once...and they crushed it. I should add, I had never heard them before the show. I was there for the opener (Quicksand) who I used to listen to in my more wily days of youth. Mastodon impressed mightily.
What was your favorite tour?
@@Hogman926 I really enjoyed Paladium in LA when they did their Once more round the sun
@@EatingOurPets95 Hell yeah. I've seen it, of course, but what a treat to be there. I've only been able to see them once and it was that co-headliner with Coheed. That's when they played Crack the Skye and I couldn't have been happier.
She’s so positive!!! And it’s contagious. I feel her joy
Brann is a monster. Just saw them on mega monsters, he’s easily hitting those high notes while just ripping
He is for sure! He should be more well known.
Bonner springs?
@@charliehanson1666 Minnesota. The ledge amphitheater. Fantastic venue, first time it’s had a metal show.
This was the best video of yours, so far, from the ones i've seen.
I love how quickly she gains confidence with every take. She kills it, and she ends up rocking it every time.
She plays for pop artists I believe
If you search her name on youtube she’s got a lot of drum covers of pop songs, it’s really fun to listen to and her happy energy really shines through everything she does!
This series is one of the best things on RUclips.
Same! Great series and whoever came up with it. Genius.
I heard mastodon live and would gladly cheer her on stage for a guest set. 🔥🔥🔥
First thing I thought was that her kit didn't have enough toms for all the fills lmao.
This is probably my favourite Mastodon song. It made me realise how much the drums can influence the overall feel of the song. I don't feel like she ever quite nailed the feel of the chorus somehow. This was a tough one!
@@damon386 I agree, but I also think her drum track gave the song an early/mid 2000s alternative feel, which I really like.
@@matrixphijr Yeah it complements the groove of the guitar really well. I might actually like it better idk, ill have to listen to the original more
She is a drum goddess, and I love her versions ... she is just pure joy!!!😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
So funny seeing the differences in "active listening" between the drummers. Dirk Verbeuren was taking meticulous notes, recording the structure, always aiming for that one take to knock it out of the park, while Domino's just like "WTF is this? What am I gonna do?" 😂
That's the difference between a session player who is hired because he's good but also because he's fast and costs less in studio time.
@@TheJuliousness Dirk is a proper elite level drummer. Domino is a great drummer but folk like Dirk are next level
@@sVieira151 Dirk is an elite level drummer who also has 20 years more experience.
There are levels then you have larnell Lewis who are on another level all together
Then there's also Thomas Lang who's an unique kind of beast as well
She's so modest too. She says Brann's part was way better but it was her first time listening to the song and had limited takes. She nails a lot of the same accents Brann does and did such a great job at playing with this song. Definitely not an easy accomplishment. Well done!
she is no where near Brann but she did a great job. and now she has to try and sing while playing it.
@@13christbane brann has also had the chance to practice this song multiple times.
Not to mention they did not give her a set that compliments Mastodon at all. One tom?
She has nothing to "apologize" for, nobody expects any drummer here to simply invent the same track on the first take, it's much more interesting to hear their version and what someone else would do. She was amazing and did a great job!
I'm a guitarist and I love this channel!
Thank you for bringing this ray of sunshine - Domino is so bright and talented, not even mentioning how sweet and beautiful she is!🤗🤘🏻🎉🎊
Please have her back again. She’s so fun and talented
The vibe she brings to te series is amazing. Please invite Domino for more metal. And obviously, she has nothing to apologize for
You know how sometimes you watch a chef make an amazing meal out of ingredients that everyone has? This is what it's like watching all these amazing artists create something. Please more of this! More artists from more genres!
This is me watching this right now. As a chef, I love making something my own and thus channel is literally the same thing in music form. Only difference is my art requires ingredients and this requires instruments
Such a great attitude! She plays with a smile and you can’t help but love it.
It's so nice to see her nail the accents right in the first take, like every drummer in the world has a common language, a connection through the instrument
I absolutely LOOOOOVE Domino’s energy and humility. She’s such a rainbow of joy in the world, and when she is handed metal, she absolutely slays!!!
Domino always "gets it". Even if it is not what the original drummer did - it is always a joy to listen to what she comes up with. I wonder if 66Samus will do a reaction on this one … 😁
I hope he does! His reactions are always entertaining.
Ooooohhh yeeahhhhh
Love this, please get Brann on this channel!!!!!
I'm a guitar player, and I like this channel way more than other channels with guitar players.
Domino is so talented and with a contagious laugh. I envy the band members where she plays.
Her personality is freaking explosive and incredibly endearing, and her drum part was still epic awesome! I've been a Mastodon fan for 20 years and my band is sharing a stage with Brent's other band Fiend w/o a Face again at the end of this month in Nola! She did so damn good and what an infectious attitude! This was awesome!!
Awesome, break a leg!
You're shameless goodluck pal
@@MARIUS2776 I got the name Riot for a reason!!! We had a great weekend!!
I love this. It's always so amazing to see how professional musicians can so quickly provide something so outstanding from scratch.
Hahaha I was going to say this! Drumeo is transforming her in a Metal Drummer. Nice!!!
To be fair, while its difficult at times, Metal is FUN to play!!!!!! hahaha
Seriously such an insanely fun series to watch. Watching professionals digest the tunes and then rely on instincts AND experience on the fly is amazing to watch! Domino's energy is infectious.
Her ability to laugh at herself with easy is absolutely gold. Great personality.
Emperor of Sand is such a great album. Jaguar God’s guitar solo is so damn good
I absolutely love these kinds of videos. Giving a drummer a song they have never heard before and asking them to play a drum beat when they have never heard the track. Please 🙏 keep this content coming! I can’t tell you how much I absolutely love this stuff! You guys kick so much ass!
She does so much with so little. Her hands are stupid fast and its fun watching her evolve as she learns the song. Really enjoy her, fun to watch.
this is so educational, watching different professionals work out songs and coming up with parts.
That build up into the second verse she did was awesome!!!
She really felt the song, such a wonderful musician😊❤ Please more episodes featuring Domino, She's amazing.
Yes please! ❤🎶
Way to go girl. As a huge Mastodon fan, you did an amazing job! I loved watching your reaction and admiration for Brann's drumming when you finally heard it 😅 hes one of the best and Im sure he'd be super pumped on hearing your interpretation.
Domino is a superstar, her infectious personality and how she goes about applying her touch to drumming is awesome.
As a guitarplayer myself, I really enjoy this channel, great drummers with amazing skills and performances.
She absolutely killed that final take, she learned the song do fast. We need more of her.
Honestly, I could watch a full series of just her showing the process of learning music shes not framiliar with. Like theres such a groove behind her style and learning process.
I second that
I love Domino's energy, such an amazing drummer
I like her attitude and charisma. And yes, she's really good and her groove is interesting.
Brann does most vocals on this song. Such a beast musician and drummer. Easily one of my favorite drummers of all time.
These videos are simply amazing! Loved the outro and transitions. A proof of how monumental are the drums in terms of tempo and genre of a song
Brann is fantastic, I saw them live recently and seeing him sing and drum at the same time gave me so much respect for him
Its completely inhuman. His drumming is really impressive but he sings on top of it all.
He is an absolute madman for singing that good and playing that hard in concerts. I saw them over the summer for the third time and managed to have him hand me a drumstick!! Third time's the charm 💪
I just saw them in St. Louis on August 29th. I made sure to record him as he sang while drumming. It was just as good as I ever hoped.
She absolutely nailed the verse groove. Wow. This is so difficult and she did an amazing job.
Almost did. She missed the variation on the kick drum that plays along with the bass. Otherwise, it was pretty solid playthrough of the verse for someone who had never listened to the song before.
Nailed it mate get yourself a drink you thirsty fuck then learn anything about drumming
She’s so charismatic, such a good musician and humble person.
Domino is a “Smiling Assassin”. Lovely, humble and infectious personality. Killer drummer with super tight grooves and intelligently intuitive. 🤘🙏
Her final take is perfect for the song itself! ❤
Love her version!! The way she approaches this challenge is really inspiring. So humble, fun and able to give her own spin to the song.
