He said that when he was a kid, he didn't have a drum kit, just sticks. He practiced with pillows, which absorb the shock instead of bouncing back. That made him double the effort for each stroke. When he finally got real drums, he just kept smacking them as hard as he did the pillows. This is from an interview in Portuguese he gave years ago.

I've met everyone from James Hetfield to Dimebag and everyone in between. Brann Dailor was the only person I've ever been star struck meeting because the guy is so insanely talented. And before anyone says anything, Dime wouldn't let me be uncomfortable around him he kept joking and messing with me until I relaxed and just hung out. And Hetfield was the biggest egotistical dickhead ever.

Eloy is by far one of the most awe-inspiring drummers today! This goes way beyond just trying to guess what the actual parts of the song would be. He's able to channel the same creative energy Mastodon pulled the song from and capture the spirit of the song which is SO much harder to get right. You need to feel and tap into the mindset and what Mastodon feel like writing and playing the song and sort of retroactively get in the room with them doing it and that makes Eloy an artist's artist through and through.
