The dude on bass picked up the drum cadence before the bass parts; it was absolutely incredible. That's the sign of a good bass player. I heard a drummer recently kill it live, and I asked if he had a background in jazz; he said no, I grew up playing gospel. They are a different breed.
Massive props, that's a very difficult song. Polyphia's bassist, Clay Gober, has a hybrid pick and plucking technique that I've never seen anyone else do. It's almost like hybrid picking on guitar, but the plucks are more popped and percussive.
It's actually mind blowing how hard these dudes just jammed over this track. BIG Polyphia fan here, and they absolutely just killed this. The synergy between drums/bass is so important, and these dudes absolutely SLAYED. PROOOOOOPS

@parapapapa69 I was really surprised at how many gospel players are using extended range super high fi basses. Rock guys just want a 4 string p bass, gospel you'll need a 6 string ken smith.

I listen to a lot of Soul, Funk, Jazz, etc. and I know that (at least from the Black music side, I can't speak on other groups) many of the singers and instrumentalists from those genres honed their skills in the church. I say that to say this, having knowledge of that for decades, it's not shocking to me that there are many Gospel players who are advanced with their playing these days. It's pretty much tradition.

Hymns, shouts, the Blues, Negro spirituals etc. I'm an atheist, but my younger years I was forced to go to church and I can tell you it's usually a lot of talent in those inner city churches.

(important to note that I know that the standard for modern white worship music is the bottom of the barrel, at least from what I've heard 😂 black culture really makes the starkest of differences here)

As a complete ignorant about music theory and all this kind of stuff, when I watch your videos, I feel like music is universal language. Obviously most of the songs you put to the musicians to hear on this series, is not the type of music that they usually hears or play, but even this, when they hear the original song, they seems to really apreciate the drum and the bass line. Otherwise, it seems like no matter the genre of music that a musician usually play or hears, it can regonize and apreciate a great drum/bass line in any type of song. It's really fun to see this.

Big fella on drums kinda fucking ate that shit. For how crazy the drums are on this, he came in and brought a whole new feel that still feels distinctly technical and super cool like the original
Clay is a pretty iconic bassist though and he comes through if you have a decent sound system. I do think part of the issue can be that he tends to play with the kick a lot and also leaves a lot of room for the guitars so people often don't appreciate the sheer feel and groove of his lines. He has a cool technique where he hybrid picks with slap style pops to accent the high notes.
The absolute level of groove these two have is outstanding, especially the drumming, it just sounds so effortless. 6:47 and 8:45 gave me actual goosebumps 😂
This is part of the eternal beauty of music. There will always be different interpretations based on personal style and technique. It’s a beautiful thing to see (knowing Polyphia very well)
I think this is one of the best examples of the best parts of playing music. Years and years of practice boils down into making amazing music, having a good time, and enjoying playing. I think the smile that never left the Drummers face really shows that off.
