Agreed. IMO, Mario, Eloy Casagrande and Tomas Haake are the Holy Trinity of modern metal drumming. All of them in an entirely different level from anyone else still around.
I think it really depends on the song what that means. I love Chris Adlers drumming in lamb of god because it fits the song super well and he’s very musical with the drums, but that kind of drumming would be way too much in practically any rock song. Sometimes being a support is what the song needs.
One of the reasons I love Gojira's sound is the fricking drums man, it's what gets me going plus Gojira's unique sound design is just out of this world
People dont mention he is also exceptionally skilled at playing slowly/intricately and controlling volume very precisely. Global Warming live recording shows this is spade as thousands of gentle ghost notes haunt the entire performance in the background at the perfect volume.
My favorite bit of Mario's story telling is in the song 'Global Warming'. For 5+ minutes he teases you with the double bass taking on that main rhythm, just to give it to you at the tail end, right as the world end... bringing in all the chaos!
I would just like to say how much of an absolute inspiration you are. I dream to watch I Prevail and you improve my drumming so much! You are my drumming hero!
One of my top 5 drummers right now. Have you heard his work on the the Eloge De L' Ombre album by Creature (now Creatvre) ? It's pretty incredible, maybe my favorite performance of his. The music is pretty mind-blowing and awesome, too.
One of the most amazing things about his drumming is his groove. He can go bonkers crazy on the double bass, but plays such a slow and funky groove with it that you have the feeling you could slowdance to it.
Mario is definitely the most versatile drummer I've ever seen, his ability to come up with aggressive phrases and get this to a masterclass transition of feelings and ways to go for the songs make him not just a great drummer but beyond this a massive creator and instigator of minds, and you can see that in the album The Way Of All Flesh, that has songs quite simple but difficult to play like Oroborus, and probably the most aggressive drumming part of the entire album in Art Of Dying, which is a song of destruction and recreation and acceptation of death that makes you travel into the most memorable feeling in a song. He's just a genius and I am proud to say that he's my favorite drummer of all time, just iconic.
One of my favorite things about Mario’s playing is that he has a great sense of groove while still being an insanely technical drummer. I find it makes the songs feel even heavier than a lot of more over the top extreme metal.
I wanna see this guy's legs bro double kicking everyday for an hour 🤯 and also much respect to this guy because he has the best mindset "If you lose discipline, you are simply f****d" mainly because that includes every aspect of life
It's the way Mario and II from sleep token made me realize it's the drums that I like about the type of music I listen to 😂 I just knew I liked the feel/vibe but they're so complex with their drumming that only now I've come to realize that it's the drums, it's always been the drums.
Hey, would you consider making a video about Rammstein's drummer? I know that he's not very technical but still I think we can learn at least a few things from him. He's the reason why I started playing drums and it's sad that I can't find much videos in the internet about his drumming. It would be cool to hear your thoughts about him. Thanks for the video btw, your videos are extremely educational for me as a beginner drummer.
Hi ! It's l'enfant sauvage from the album L'Enfant Sauvage ! The part that is shown in the video is in the mid-late of the song ! Between 2:40 and 3:20 if I remember well !
I honestly just cannot fathom how people can practice for hours every single day without developing repetitive stress issues like carpal tunnel. I can't even practice more than twice a week for a half an hour because of this problem
Drums are an instrument like the rest. Everyone is equal. Basically all points come down to treating the drums like any other instrument and not as a metronome. Mario plays like a jazz drummer.
When I drummed in high school my signature move was that I hit my kit so fricking hard I needed a concrete block in front of it or I would push it away in half a song, I used to break sticks and even cymbals almost every session...good times. Mario though, he's from another world (pun intended hehe). Give "the Art of Dying" a listen it's mind boggling
it's metal, the drums are not supposed to "not distract from the song", they are active part of the sound wall, and we want to be distracted by awesome musicians Great video, Mario is great
I have no idea what your talking about i play mad guitar but I still love your pov videos especially since I want to play in a band I am not a fan of heavy metal but it’s so funny because I watch you I like this band called weezer they are a alternative rock band but still man love your content man and the grind dude thanks for all of your pov. Vids man and tell Dylan that I love his guitar parts man have a good day man
There’s some thought that Normotim reduces dopamine, which eases the process of breaking habits. It might be useful for anyone looking to change their lifestyle.
The Duplantier Brother just work there ass of to make there songs as perfect as they could , so when Mario say speed is not important it's about (over accuracy) he probably build his drum pattern slowly and make them faster at the right speed the song need , no less, no more , the man is know for working with the discipline of a monk, same for El Estepario or a lot of very technical drummers .
Ok, the fact that Gojira's music is based off Mario's drumming means I came up with the perfect description for him: Mario DuPlantier is the most melodic drummer I've ever heard.
*NeObliviscaris enters the chat* Insane double kick? You showed basic running patters. He’s amazing, but there are countless drummers that play just as fast or faster and technical parts in technical death metal 👍 toxic garbage wasteland is a song that got me into progressive metal.
@ nope, just not my type of music. Not a metal guy. Some of what people call metal, sure. Metallica, one or two Slipknot songs, LOVE Breaking Benjamin and Linkin Park. But that’s about it. But not on a daily basis. So no, I’d never heard of them.
Speed doesn’t matter to people who’re unable to maintain a consistent meter when playing fast. However, speed indeed matters and matters a great deal if you’re a drummer in a brutal tech death band. Mario is a sick drummer … no question, but his 2 double bass examples were not “insane” at all.
"looks don't matter" - pretty people
"money doesn't matter" - rich people
"speed doesn't matter" - Mario Duplantier
You forgot the most important secret; play shirtless
Enless you're jamming on the edge of a prison keep, in which case, wear the bare minimum 😂

@chasm9557 Yas, I think the only thing he owns is, Jeans, shorts, underwear and that one black formal t shirt 😂
Mario is one of my drumming idols. His creativity and skills amazes and motivates me every time
Agreed. IMO, Mario, Eloy Casagrande and Tomas Haake are the Holy Trinity of modern metal drumming. All of them in an entirely different level from anyone else still around.
I like when drums are used as another equal instrument and not just something that supports the song
I think it really depends on the song what that means. I love Chris Adlers drumming in lamb of god because it fits the song super well and he’s very musical with the drums, but that kind of drumming would be way too much in practically any rock song. Sometimes being a support is what the song needs.

So happy to see my favorite US dummer talking about my favorite French drummer ! (btw I'm French)
Mario c'est le boss ! 🤘
Moi aussi 😎
On es tellement la 🏴☠
Mario probablement un des meilleurs batteurs aujourd'hui honnêtement
He is way too good, and his grooves are mind boggling
Secret 1: Mario is the song.
Nintendo 👀
Lmao. When he said “technical” I was like… only Mario is being technical, everything else is quite simple honestly.
Not only is he the song, he’s the entire band
My favorite bit of Mario's story telling is in the song 'Global Warming'. For 5+ minutes he teases you with the double bass taking on that main rhythm, just to give it to you at the tail end, right as the world end... bringing in all the chaos!
Best drummer I've ever seen live
are you 7 yo???
I got a Super Mario ad before this video, this made sense
I would just like to say how much of an absolute inspiration you are. I dream to watch I Prevail and you improve my drumming so much! You are my drumming hero!
Me too they came here before I had to go on a trip the next morning otherwise I would've gone. Still kicking myself for not going 😅
You have to do more of these, it helps me out.
FINALLY MY FAVORITE DRUMMER

Love Mario and all of Gojira! He’s a beast on the kit and a real innovator.
They were phenomenal in concert
I would love video on archspire, considering that they're running an audition for their new drummer
i think Kevin Paradis is gonna get the gig
@@kamj6607Testicles crossed. He had the best covers imo, not that I saw them all.
Also he's inspired by music other than metal and he's an artist, he paints. Diversity in creativity 💜
the interview with mario on downbeat is a must see for every metal drummer!!
Yep great interview ! I recommend
2 hours of daily practice I also try to practice every day, but the 2 bass BPM is still barely 200.
Commitment he's fully committed to every note we call these "Lifers" drums for life!
As the audience, I have to say the drums are one of my favorite and one of the most important parts of good music.
6:31 - the very cheerful "yea!" haha
their sound is so brutal, and he's just such a chipper dude.
(love them; saw them in Atlanta once)
Apart from one of the greatest drummers to grace humanity, Mario is also a humongously wholesome human being, hence the greatness.
It’s all fun and games on the Gojira set until Mario hunkers down for a double kick part 👀
5:33 This makes a lot of sense, a lot of their stuff does sound like riffs that were written around drum parts.
