His style will never be replicated hearing that from Cannibal Corpse elitists made me happy because they understood how much work was put in to his skill, my other friend, who is also a drummer has a theory that heart related problems happen more often to drummers due to their high usage of their bodies on continuous amounts of time which hearing about Jimmy consistently practicing nonstop, kind of makes sense to why he was the way he was and how he sadly passed
That's why my son been studying everything he and Joey did. 1 year with a drumset and there's no Slipknot or Avenged song he can't play. He's so bored he's going through them now making them heavier, faster and harder. But I always tell him, it has to be composed for the song intention.
@@sebg2086 dude brooks wackerman is technically one of the best drummers in modern metal/rock, doesn't matter if he was playing pop or punk or jazz gigs before. His brother literally drummed for Zappa and his dad was a drum teacher, the guy is from a family of drummers. He was one of The Rev's main inspirations as a drummer. He's still a technical asf drummer, better than the rev purely talking technique
I get it it's your opinion but there are more drummers like Rev who are as dedicated and talented as he is. Brooks, Eloy or any other working professional drummers that you know today have been doing the same thing that Rev did. They were probably in a different situation and place but the dedication and hard work from practicing and creative brainstorming is mutual to them and also to other drummers that you probably haven't heard of yet.
I am a novice drummer, I discovered you from a Kick streamer that was watching your vids and I haven't looked back since. Im a fan of Avenged Sevenfold as well, do you think a tour with them is ever going to be on the cards?
Absolutely, as a drummer myself, I think he was a one of a kind. There are better technical drummers, and faster drummers today, but he had a creative style that gave him a sound I don't think will ever be topped. He also looked great playing, the energy he gave off and the flashy way that he played.
They played before them at sonic temple. Massive avenged fan here and wanted barricade so I was pretty bummed I had to watch Gabe play on a screen (they played on a different stage). Def have to hit up an I prevail show soon
These video tips are not only useful for drummers or musicians, but also for artists and anyone involved in creative production overall. The Wackerman brothers are all top notch drummers. They had the best teacher and Chad who is the oldest first went on to play with Frank Zappa when he was only 18 y/o It's great to hear they are doing all so well.
Not to mention Chad's drum sections for Allen Holdsworth were top notch. He has a great solo in The Un-Merry Go Round on Metal Fatigue that's pretty insane.
Avenged Sevenfold and their "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet" was such a seminal album for me growing up. Love this analysis video and DBO Academy has completely changed my life this year!
I think the true reason avenged sevenfold has been and will probably always be my favourite band/artist of all is because each member of the band has their own highly complex and unique way of performing. The more i learn of each member and their instrument/vocal technique, the more i can go back to each song/album and pick out very specific moments of a song that i haven’t really picked up on before. It just never gets boring. They are truly the only artist i dont get sick of.
That overnight success point you made is relevant for so much more than drumming or music and hits home for me. I practiced and studied programming 7 days a week for 7 years straight before landing my first professional software engineering position. I didn't apply to any companies during the first 5 years of practice and study time because I thought I wasn't good enough. I also didn't learn more than 1 programming language until after that 7 years was up because I wanted to make sure I was proficient with one programming language before moving to others. The practicing the boring basics also hit home for me because I was doing the same thing with programming, creating that muscle memory and fully understanding what those basics did, why they work the way they did and how they work under the hood. Fantastic video and thank you for putting the advice out there for others to learn from and maybe even apply them to different things.
I love your content Gabe, it's so creative, instructive and funny at the same time, especially POV videos. Keep it up please! You are the best content creator among the drummers.
I remember when I was getting more serious about drumming around the time A7X was becoming more mainstream. I remember being around 15 and listening everything A7X that I could get my hands on. I was listening to Waking The Fallen, Seventh Trumpet, City of Evil and trying to mimic everything I could hear (I couldn't read the music at the time) and I couldn't do it. Hearing the Rev do his thing was something special and taken away from us way too early.
Dude, you are my drumming hero. I love you, and the fact that you can make these types of videos, while also doing crazy other things, like making waffles on tour.
Jimmy's drumming is not just a drum. It is amazing in so many ways. The history behind every recordings is a mixture of sadness and hope. Rip the REV Sullivan 😴

Great drummer, incredible songwriter AND amazing SINGER. The Chorus on Critical Acclaim are sung by The Rev, plus another very cool parts in other songs.
It’s amazing that the REV is getting so much love from this channel!! I wish we had better quality footage of him drumming besides the professional camera work of LBC. 🤧 Him and Joey!
That's insane doing an entire album in 1 take. As a Producer, Studio Engineer I understand exactly what that would take if true. That's a Ton, a $h!t Ton of Practice to nail it. And certainly I'm sure some of it had to be edited after, but so what. Often when I've recorded great Drummers who were very prepared, they still usually play several takes and we still then usually need at least some minimal edits.
Also every overnight success has 100% broke their back & struggled usually for 1 - 2 decades before hitting the easy road, that still is far from easy.

Hey, so i just recently discovered your channel and learned that you're the drummer of "I Prevail," a band i listen to frequently. I just wanted to tell you and everyone behind the scenes and the band that i love the music and keep up the good work.
holy mother of all that is glory. i always loved avenged sevenfold for the drumming. the Rev was iconic to me as a kid and i didn’t know the bands name as my mom didn’t let me listen to them so i would have to sneak their cds at my friend’s house. drums was the first instrument i learned when i wanted to start playing music, and by then i had wanted to learn to play afterlife on the drums because the fills are so satisfying. shortly thereafter i realized i would have to play a lot more drums to get there. then i learned about the story of this drummer and i was always awestruck. keep in mind my friend group and a lot of people i was around would have probably thought A7X was cringe, i don’t have a better word. but i fucking loved the Rev’s work. i never even fucking knew he recorded an entire fucking album in one fucking take. i don’t know why i didn’t look further into the band or into the music parts themselves. but im so happy to know that there’s yet another reason to sing the praises of the Rev’s drumming. god tier barely scratches the surface. Edit: and yeah i didn’t say RIP because i don’t respect the artist because they died. the Rev is still alive and commands respect via the music.
I absolutely love the way that you explained that last point. I constantly argue with drummers and musicians that talent is nothing more than an excellent excuse, successful drummers are so good because they're just "talented" and you're not, they're so much better because they actually put in that hard work. They slaved away hours of their lives practicing very basic, simple, and boring rudiments so that they could boost themselves to an upper echelon of skill, even when everyone was telling them that it was a waste of time, even if they ever started believing that it might be a waste of time. They never gave up and they never stopped working hard on their craft. But people say it's talent, I feel like that's an insult to their dedication. Here, you use the word "luck", and I could not agree more, it's the same idea. Because to say "Oh, The Rev was just so talented, I could never do what he did", you're blaming his success on an idea that he just won some genetic lottery and got luckier than you. But to admire his passion and dedication is to understand all of the hard work that came with it.
This vid is great. The best musicisans are the biggest personalities mixed with the most dedication for their skill and songwriting premise. Some have it some dont. All of these bands that we cut their teeth through live shows and a hard life doing it from nowhere. The Rev did more than just drum for the band, he contributed a lot to the music, ever since he passed the bands direction completely changed, their music doesn't even sound the same since the self titled album.
I followed a couple ska bands for part of a tour because I'm a nerd. Two of the bands were from the OC area and knew the Rev and because the community was close at the time would hang out with him. They said during A7X rehearsals he would sometimes get bored and setup his set left handed and not miss a single beat.
Well done sir. So many people, including other musicians take what really great drummers do for granted! I don't know if you have, but you should do a video on Grant McFarland from this or the apocalypse... He made drumming look easy and boring... He was insanely good.
As a late starter to music it was such a light of inspiration to know that Bird was practicing 6 or more hours a day to get great and come back and knock everyone’s socks off …. And so that was the game plan to play catch up and actually get to a place where I could express myself on a kit …. And that’s what it takes and that’s who it’s for
Saw you guys with Parkway Drive in Sydney on Saturday night and everyone absolutely fucking killed it!! Definitely in my top 10 best shows I've ever seen. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

"You have to be good at double kick to be able to play with them."
John Bonham: "Hold my beer and take the wheel."
I followed a couple ska bands for part of a tour because I'm a nerd. Two of the bands were from the OC area and knew the Rev and because the community was close at the time would hang out with him. They said during A7X rehearsals he would sometimes get bored and setup his set left handed and not miss a single beat.
The drumwork in The Stage is just insane
RIP Rev we love you!
The Rev was one in a billion
The biggest talent out there is hard work!
And that’s what it takes and that’s who it’s for
That graph is unbelievably helpful in my motivation goddamn
I wish there were a channel like this, but for guitarists
2 things… the Rev was a beast, and A7X is not a metal band.. let’s get that clear
Saw you guys with Parkway Drive in Sydney on Saturday night and everyone absolutely fucking killed it!! Definitely in my top 10 best shows I've ever seen. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Looked away for one second and started listening to your voice and it almost sounded like MatPat!
Hey massive fan of your work gave keep it up 🙌
I can't play any instruments, yet this video is more inspirational to me on so many stuffs
Sick breakdown! RUclips needs a way to let us like vids on a scene specific pace the amount of time I went to like the video just to stop myself from taking the initial like away. I was not on the toilet XD
I really admire your editing skills
I’m not a drummer. I play some acoustic stuff but your video was sick and I’m just inspired to do anything right now ha good work
Inspiring! I learned much from this video!
Not sure how Gabe knew I was on the toilet?! Love your videos dude❤
You are truly amazing i just love that i found your channel 😊
The Rev R.I.P. was something special. I'm 15 and I started to practice boring double bass endurance like he did about one hour daily this year. It helped me a lot! And yes he was right: It's boring but works. 🤘🤘🤘
