In a time where people are turning against Superman in a big way because of how publishers and Hollywood is treating him, it's time to take a step back and really examine why this character has stayed so long to begin with, and why he'll still be around when many of us are gone. It's time to look at how he's an inspiration, it's time to examine what makes him spectacular. It's time to ask ourselves, what makes Superman such a special character?

I have a question for everyone.
OK, if you don't like the movies or think that everyone who was not Richard Donner has no business making Superman movies, pitch me a Superman trilogy.
I'm not trying to be a troll or start an argument in the comment section, I really want everyone's opinion.
See, even as I write this, it's been announced that there's going to be another Batman animated movie based on "Hush." Another animated Batman movie. They just recently released the animated "Death Of Superman" movie.
What's the difference? Why is it that there seem to be a hundred Batman movies yet to be made either in live action or in animation?
Why is it when it comes to Superman, we either get a new origin, or we see the Death Of Superman all over again?
When people talk about Superman on the big screen, I keep hearing how Superman should act or look or smile or save everyone and always do the right thing but he's totes relatable and if you don't agree, you clearly hate joy and heroism and worship Zack Snyder as your lord and savior. I've heard this a little too often.
I want to hear what you'd do with Superman on the big screen. Something new and different that honors Superman's legacy in the comics.
You know, that is an excellent question, Anthony, and you've got my brain buzzing so much I think you gave me an idea for my next script. Check back in the editorial playlist in a couple months, I might just have something for you!
Thank you for taking the comment in the spirit intended. I'm really not trying to attack people who didn't like MOS and BVS, but I really want to have an adult dialogue about how Superman is represented on screen.
See, I think that the Donner Superman was both the best and worst thing to happen to Superman as a character. It showed us how to tell a cinematic comic book movie in a way that generates box office success. Sadly, it also locked everyone in only one way of telling a Superman story.
Bat-fans, we got our Man Of Steel back in 1989. On paper, that was a movie that did everything wrong. Batman kills people with no guilt. He has guns on his Batmobile. Joker killed his parents. He fires bullets and missiles at the Joker.
Why did Burton's Batman work and get acceptance? Well, because in the comics we got used to people telling Batman stories that go outside the mainstream and take chances with the character. After the two Burton films, we got Batman:The Animated Series, a cartoon that used the comics, the movies, and melded things together to create a unique Batman. And over time, writers, artists, and creatives of all stripes had a shot at Batman, doing their own thing, creating new villains and telling new stories that end up becoming part of the mythos. Batman is used as a way to stretch boundaries with comics and cartoons and even video games.
What about Superman? I hear over and over again how hard it is to write a good Superman story but also how Superman is better than all of us, superior in every way is the ultimate symbol of all that is good and right and proper and he smiles, saves the day, never doubts and never fails.
Batman is allowed to fail and make mistakes. His mistakes come back to haunt him and he is called on his personal bullcrap by those closest to him. He doubts himself and is forced to grow as a character to the point that there are characters in the Bat-verse who are now untouchable. In the new 52, Superboy and Supergirl were completely redone and we had to relearn everything about them as if the past had no consequence. With Batman, we still had an adult Nightwing, a Red Hood Jason Todd, a Damian who was Robin and a Red Robin Tim Drake.
Why the difference? Why does Batman's universe get solidified to the point that when DiDio wanted to kill Nightwing in Infinite Crisis, you had people in DC who were ready to quit over it. Yet in the same story, Superboy dies horribly and I don't recall much of a fracas over it. Maybe because Conner was only around since the 90s. Dick Greyson has been in comics for almost 80 years in real time and has been allowed to grow and mature in the meantime.
I will bet you money that if we ever get a Superboy or a Supergirl on the big screen, it'll be a totally different take on them. I doubt they'll be Conner or Kara or anything else we'll recognize because they get rebooted so often it's getting ridiculous!
You want one with the origin story, film taking off from the current DCAU, or just one dealing with the character? Because no offense, partner...we can just put *Superman: Birthright* to film and _that's_ a trio of 400M dollar films right there.
Prepare For A Long Read Everybody:
If I directed a Superman Movie, I'd of course have the whole how Superman got to Earth Story with Krypton being destroyed and Kal-El being sent to Earth on a rocket, then I'd try to give a Young Clark Kent as much spotlight time as possible, I'd have a scene where a group of bullies are bullying a Kid and Clark Steps and asks the bullies to stop, and then the Bullies push around Clark and dare him too fight back, but Clark refuses and the bullies decide that Clark isn't worth the time and they walk off, and I would try giving more spotlight time for Clark and Lana's Relationship as well, and I'd have Superman save a bunch of people on a School Bus maybe from falling off a Bridge or an explosion, I'd have Jonathan Kent die (Most likely from natural causes) and then Clark figures out that he is from another World and Clark and Martha Kent have a family talk about what family means and what is right and what Is wrong, I'd have Lex Luthor pretty much be the Millionaire owner of Lexcorps and I'd have Clark go out and save a Town from say an explosion of some kind and Superman gets interviewed where he says he is a friend to the people of Earth and just wants to be a symbol of hope and peace, and Lex sees Superman as a Potential Threat to him and tries to study Superman like what he's capable of and if he has any weaknesses, so Lex hires some guys to Rob a Museum and Superman shows up to stop the robbers and Superman stands near some relic made of Kryptonite and Lex figures out what the relic is made of figures out that Superman is weak to Kryptonite, so Lex decides to build the ultimate battling Machine capable of taking on Superman and I'd have the Machine be equipped with a Power Supply of Kryptonite meaning it has Kryptonite Lazers Etc, and then the machine fires a powerful enough Kryptonite Lazer Blast that knocks Superman out and then the Robot malfunctions and goes on a rampage throughout Metropolis, and then Superman regains consciousness and sees the Robotic Suit throw a Bus with people on it and Superman grabs the bus and helps the people get off of it, and eventually Superman charges at the Machine and rips the Kryptonite out of the machine and throws it far enough where it Lands in a River, and Superman sees the Lexcorp logo on the Suit and carries the suit into space and destroys it, and then Superman pays Lex Luthor a visit and says that from now on he'll be keeping a close eye on Luthor and Superman flies off as the people cheer for and thank Superman for saving them, and in the end of the movie, Superman is shown back at his childhood home in Smallville where his mother Martha Kent says she's proud of Clark and she says she knows Jonathan would be proud of him too
I'd probably make small changes to this here and there but this is more like a First Draft of my own Superman Movie

Batman: Genius, billionaire and master combatant.
Wonder Woman: Amazon, princess, and daughter of the gods
Green Lantern: Highly skilled pilot, unbelievable willpower and member of an intergalactic police force
Aquaman: Atlantian, power over all ocean life, and King of the seas.
Superman: Farm boy from Kansas, reporter, who does the right thing whenever he can.
And apparently Superman is the unrelateable one.
I think I need to point this out if you need to point out why a character is relatable and why one isn’t that means there not relatable if somebody is truly relatable if you can feel that character you don’t need it to be pointed out

You seemed to forget the part where Superman is an invulnerable flying superhero from the planet Krypton that's allergic to glowing green rocks and wears his underwear on the outside.

The point is that despite all that abilities he still remained a good and humble person and he never used his powers for his own benefit. Other superheroes became superheroes because of tragedy, fate or fame but Superman became a superhero because he thinks it's the right thing.
@@intrex9828 He hasn't really experienced real tragedy, he becomes a villain when it does happen. (his planet getting destroyed doesn't count because he wasn't there to see it so he has no deep emotional connection to it)
When you were a kid you used to like Superman over Batman.
When you grow up, you probably switch and see Batman as a more relatable character, and see Superman as someone boring.
But when you mature, you learn why you liked Superman in the first place and understand what he truly stands for.

I think I’m going through that transition now, back to appreciating Superman for the optimistic things he stands for.
Personally I think as one matures having both perspective are just as important. Superman is the willingness to be strong and optimistic. Tryin to be the best person you can be. But Batman reminds us to be vigilante.
As soon as I turned 30 I switched back to Superman.
Even Batman himself acknowledges the fact that Superman was Clark Kent before he was Superman. He didn’t need to be a hero to be a good man, he just is a good man.

Bruce Wayne IS Batman.
Superman IS Clark Kent.
Both Superheroes have their places. You find relatable Batman because he's you experiencing this jaded cruel world. Batman is the vehicle to vicariously experience your trauma. But Superman is different, Superman is like your grandpa, your grandpa that has a kid you used to idolize and he was your hero, your hero that would save the day. Nothing has changed, your grandpa is still there, it's just your turn to take the step into the sun.
It's the idea of a man who can do anything but chooses to do the right thing.

Not really Superman can do the right thing because he's in a world where doing the right thing is easy and has no repercussions. He never actively has to make a choice between what is right and what is necessary and live with it. It's easy to do good when there's no repercussions. He also never had to make the active choice of choosing to save people and condemn anyone to die. He never had to choose to actively let 5000 die to save 10000 or to try and save those people a the cost of others and had to live with it. Superman can save everyone and any blame is passed off, it was never his fault he couldn't save one group of people over another, it's always indirect and he is never seen actively choosing. he never has to let people die and live with the guilt of making the difficult choice. He also lacks a spine, he has all that power without the spine to use it, so he either actively ignores it, willfully chooses not to act and is therefore directly or indirectly complicit for inaction. There was a 1969 Justice League issue in which he refused to end the Vietnam War because it wasn't "Clear cut". For someone with his abilities if he knows about a massacre happening and refuses to step in to take sides it makes him impotent or spineless.
It's the laziness of having an omelette without the ugliness of breaking the eggs.
Let's also not forget how Superman killed casually before it was deemed a bad example to younger kids and he started having a code against killing (which is what you know him for now)

Kal is not afraid to lay down his life for the safety, security, and happiness of the human race. The man is virtuous, selfless, and courageous for the people that can't be.
Superman is someone we should all aspire to be.
I do like both Batman and Superman, though this video helps me think Superman has redeemable traits. Even without the use for his powers, he can still save a life.

Godlike super power without corruption is the key to Superman.
Superman may not always be right, but he will always be good.
Alvin John Mayor of course, that’s the thing that is amazing about him, he’s no mr. perfect, but he will always be good. He only fights to save people, he’s happy just saving people, while other heroes like Batman have to do things in a more complicated manner to get their point across.
Yeah but Superman is always easily corrupted by the death of Lois. He is corrupted by loss. To me, at least, he is an overpowered Harvey Dent. I have never understood why he is so popular. Is it because he’s the strongest? I’ve always seen Batman as a better hero and Superman as a better man. Superman is more like Harvey dent and Batman is more like the positive result of strife which would be the opposite of Two face. I don’t understand why people associate optimism with Superman when Batman has experienced more loss and hardship than he has. He sacrifices a normal and happy life for the citizens of Gotham. Am I missing something or am I not getting the point?
He was a regular kid like other ones before knew who he was. Reised around good people who teached him what love, kindness, optimism and loss are.

I disagree with the idea that Superman is unrelateable because of his power and perfection. At his core, he is just a good man given the power to make the world a better place. Around that, he is many things: a farm boy, a city man, an immigrant, and an american to the core. Superman is himself mostly a persona: he acts perfect because he doesn’t want to be feared. Just as anyone would try to hide or improve their flaws and insecurities in s position of trust. I believe that Superman is an extremely relateable character, moreso than Batman.

Superman doesn't represent the small human becoming great or getting revenge or discovering some grand adventure or becoming great; Superman represents humility and goodness. That's why he's not as popular; he's pure good hearted selflessness.

As some one from a salt of the earth kinda place, I'm going with Superman. Despite the awesome set of powers and being nigh invulnerable to everything, Superman does good because he wants to, not because he was spurned by some event like Batman. Superman does good simply because that's what he's been taught and it's what he knows and hopes. I find that relatable. One good act a day can make the smallest difference or the largest.

It's not always about the muscle and the epic battles and adventures that these characters go on, while they are entertaining and fun to experience. It's the character of said character that we want to see the most and that's why we follow them on these grand epic's and Superman unlike... Probably most of the others, WILL go out of his way for the people he cares for, which is ALL of us. and it is how we all should be. Wanting the best for each other and to raise each other up when we're down or having a bad day. not pretending we don't see it and moving along. In today's world where dark and brooding are the norms of popularity in pop culture icons and in today's world where everything is controversial and needs to be politically correct. *We need Superman now more then ever.*

And that sums it up in two sentences!
Superman grew up on a farm. He went to public school. He was a nerd, he was bullied, didn't have a shot with girls, then he came back home to help his Pa working in the farm. He left home and moved to the city. He works a 9 to 5 despite being the most powerful being in the planet. He has a boss. He has an apartment. He sends money home, to his parents that he loves and visits. He's in love with only one working class woman who at first doesn't give him the time of day. Then somebody needs saving, he rips open that shirt and reveals the Superman underneath.
Batman grew up billionaire from birth. He went to private school. He doesn't have parents or anyone to tell him what to do growing up. He doesn't need to do any grown up stuff, Alfred takes care of his huge mansion and Lucius Fox takes care of his company. He can date any number of super models and drive cool cars. He's supposed to be only human, yet he's a genius at every single subject and discipline he tackles. He's the best detective, a master of 127 different martial arts, has god knows how many PhD's, etc. He's supposedly only a human but thanks to his popularity he has plot armor so that he can beat any other superhero as if it were magic.
Superman is far more relatable, and far more 'realistic'. Because given suspension of disbelief, I can believe he does all the things he does because he is an alien. But Batman is as human as I am and yet he's pretty much a Batgod, I find that much more unbelievable than Superman.
Ultimately, Superman actually inspires me to want to be a better person, rather than making me wish I was cooler.
I mean all of us have a bit of Superman. We just decide which part we like.
This is a beautiful video. The character of Superman is not based on how powerful he is, but how we can aspire to be like him as human beings, and that's the perfection of being human, to help each other so we can be better everyday. I literally cried with this video, I really loved that scene in All-Star Superman where he saves the girl from suicide, I cried as I was reading.

Batman can learn a lot from Superman, about what it is to be compassionate and caring even though he suffered a terrible loss but is willing to try. And you know what, he has.
One of _the_ greatest movie quotes, far as I'm concerned, that *completely* encapsulates what superman is comes from a film made years before I was born, but *still* resonantes with me, even today:
_They can be a great people, Kal-El...they _*_wish_*_ to be. They lack _*_only the Light that will show them the way._*_ it is for this reason... their capacity for good... that I sent them you: my greatest gift...my only son._
Jor-El said this to Christopher Reeve's Superman, and in that line, he said *everything* that needed to be said about the character. Superman has been giving hope and showcasing the simple power of human goodness to humanity for generations. As a symbol of hope and goodness, he _is_ what we should aspire to be, you are right about that. the reason so many modern day adaptaptionshave failed is because they *choose to ignore this* in favor of what's "Cool" or "would resonante" with audiences. I'm just waiting for the day when they get back to basics and thus get it right.

Without superman, there would be no all might, invincible etc. These characters were inspired by superman and I liked him in the animated series.

People think acting cool or killing people or being bad ass makes a hero look Good but relate these kind of super heros in real life..Nobody will love them in real life we need hero's like superman...I never regretted being a superman fan...he is the second hero i saw when i was a child .. i liked spiderman but there was something about superman and now i know what is it...

Indeed! I think people shoot down optimism too easily. Now granted, I can’t blame people for being less and less optimistic, especially considering the state of things right now, but that’s what makes optimism all the more important. We need to believe a better world is possible if we want to make it happen one day
I agree superman is my favorite character, not my favorite superheroe, my favorite fictional character of all time, and I dont care what people think, he inspires me to be a better person every day, everytime a difficult situation happens I think about some of the panels in all star superman, and I feel better suddenly, and its funny I feel so attached to a fictional character to teach me lessons, no human being other than my parents has. Everything regarding being human and moral, I use him as an inspiration even more than going to the church, the way I see it, he is the closest example we have as a human deity, although I dont like him being associated as a god, he kind of is, but a human god, a person who instead of looking down on us, he look and talk to us as equals and wishes the best for all of us, and will risk his life to see us safe.

He's been why favorite superhero for 30 years. When I was young and faced with a tough choice, I would think of how Clark would handle it.
People always say how Superman isn't realistically written from a moral pov, as he isn't just wise or good he's a bit too good, and hence people think his isn't relatable.
Now here is the thing Superman ain't a character you relate too his, someone you know is the best of us, again not because of his powers but because of his too good personality
And instead of thinking like well, his basically me but with superpowers,
you think like damn his an alien but more human than any actual human being.
You don't relate to Superman you look up to him, you get inspired you strive to become like him
And thats what makes him so inspiring.

Superman became famous because he was the optimistic farm boy 'Clark Kent' with godlike powers, living by the boy scout code of honor, who could hide among normal people without standing out. He stood for truth, justice, and the American way. He was invulnerable, outmatched every opponent, yet remained incorruptible. This Superman died when the writers took this away and presented him as this musclebound, vulnerable, bleeding angry god.
Superman is probably at his most interesting when he is challenged with the urge to cut loose with his powers. When a villain or a circumstance makes him wrestle with feelings that can make him dangerous with the powers he has. The fact that he will never give into those desires and continue to uphold the core traits of a genuine superhero is what makes him so special. We like this same incorruptibility in Batman, too.
People complain about Superman being OP, but that’s not really the point of his story. He’s always been OP since the start. He’s not an anime protagonist training to get stronger. He is a God trying to fit in with mortals and do all he can for them.
Batman is a super genius, who has trained for years to be at the peak of human achievement in almost every way, from combat skill, to technological knowledge, and even physical fitness, and that’s still barely scraping the surface of what ye can do.
Wonder Woman is a being who possesses god-like strength, speed, and durability, who’s mastery of combat is nigh unmatched, who possesses magical weapons such as a lasso that forces people to tell the truth, and wrist cuffs that can never be broken.
And Superman is a farm boy from Kansas, he sees the good in everyone, he has an unconditional love for all of humanity as a whole, even if someone has committed terrible crimes against humanity, or even him personally, he still knows there’s good in them.
Oh yeah, he also has super powers.
It's astonishing to think that to this day people still don't truly understand Superman, yes he is a God walking among men as far as powers goes, but he for all intense and purposes is "Human." Synder while creating a visually stunning film and universe for the DC characters missed the point, Superman has all these great powers and could theoretically do anything he chose to be a hero, to be the friend that the world needed, and honestly I feel like even if he didn't have all of his incredible powers Clark Kent would still do everything he could to save people not because he is a Hero, but because he is a good person. He knows that his power is a gift and that he could use them to benefit the world.. One of my favorite examples of Clark's Humanity is during Superman Vs The Elite when Manchester Black told Clark that he is living in a dreamland... and He simply replied Good. Dreams save us, they change us and on my souls Until my Dream of a world that lives in peace comes true I will not rest. Another is from Superman and Lois premier when he saves a young boy and hands him his hat back. The boy looks up and says Thanks... Cool Costume. Clark Smiles and simply replies. THANKS MY MOM MADE IT FOR ME. Yall want to make Superman work on the big screen and in comics? Write like that.

I hated the Jesus imagery in BvS.
Although he stands for hope and optimism, Superman is one of us.
There was a scene where Lobo ridicules superman for coming from a planet where everyone's dead and Clark replies along the lines of - 'I'm not from Krypton, I'm from Kansas.'
Superman doesn't want to be worshipped, he just wants to help.
Also, it makea him less relatable to confine him to a single religion.
The chances are, there are tons of religious figures thar stand for the same thing.

He was, is and always will be my hero
The best superman ever written is All-star by Grant Morrison. That panel with him, even well dying...takes the time to stop a suicide jumper by telling her she is stronger then she thinks. That this alien who has the powers of a God...takes just a moment in his last hours to save a life is what makes him special. He will always be the symbol of hope.
As a young kid, Superman has been my favorite DC hero. He's a being with nearly unlimited power and yet is often the most human out of all the heroes, even Batman, an actual human. Always using his powers for good, unless you mess with the people he cares about.
Despite being more a Batman guy, I have always had a genuine respect for Superman. I'm more a pessimist myself, but he is Superman because of his strong morals, and we need a Superman right now. Kingdom Come is awesome because Superman never gave himself to the corruption of a bunch of amoral and crazy costumed vigilantes.
What Zack Snyder has done to him and Batman is beyond forgiving.

Wow, just wow, I had tears in my eyes though the comic I was reading, it’s so beautiful. I don’t know any superhero of that magnitude, would spend his whole day just waiting and giving one person a time of day like Superman did. This touched me because it’s true. Superman is hope and optimism, in a world so blinded by societal corruption and corruption of the mind, Superman is truly a symbol for hope. And when you give someone some time of peace like Superman did with the woman, that is the best thing you can do for someone to save their life (or if you just wanna talk with someone) because it gives them freedom to feel something different rather than to be forced to feel something different.

I think Grant Morrison and Mark Waid truly got what Superman was about. Kingdom Come is one of the best DC comics series ever and it was the perfect response to the plethora of grim dark comics that were birthed from the late 80s like Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns. Meanwhile: All Star Superman is more of a personal story about Superman himself. It’s light on action, but it’s a homage to what makes the character so great.
I think that the problem with Superman is us actually. Because we don't try to look at him from a new, different perspective. We see the god-like alien in Superman, and not the farmer boy who was raised by two humble, honest, and kind people, a boy who chooses to do the right thing. The right thing may not always be the best option, but at least it's the right one.
I'm not saying that we need more of Supes and less of Batsy, I am saying tho that we need more of their friendship because they are the most iconic characters to ever be created.
Batman teaches Superman how to be a hero, and Superman teaches Batman how to be a human.
If we could see the human in Superman, and not the god or alien, then we would't say that he's not relatable.

Ah yes, the one that started it all. I actually made this on a lark, no idea it was going to blow up the way it did. Got inspired and wrote, recorded, and edited it in about 4 days. Now, it's become the precursor to our entire future on youtube. Interesting how things work out
Something we need to understand about Supes is that he is a normal man first and foremost. Behind the powers he's just your average Joe with a good heart. He just likes helping people and those powers help him enact on those good deeds. Really he's just like us, a better version of ourselves but with super powers. In a weird way it kinda makes him even more super.
I couldn't stop myself, and get teary eyed. This video motivated me to explore more of his character.
This video shows a great amount of understanding Superman as a character. At his core, Superman or rather Clark Kent is a good man who wants to help people and try to do the right thing. He may be gifted with powers and abilities beyond those of regular humans, but those powers don't define him. How he chooses to his powers to help others is what defines him. The world would be a much better place if we at least try to help others and do the right thing, the way that Superman does. Plus, Superman gets this sense of morality from being raised by regular people, which shows that his goodness comes from humanity itself. Superman represents the best of humanity because humans have helped him to be the best he can be.
He could be anyone... and he chooses to be kind.

Well said... I've been dealing with the hardest aspects of living ... old age, loss of friends, death of friends, my mate dying, a pandemic, really learning the cost of isolation .... and suddenly, I found myself watching the old Superman movies and shows. I know enough about my own inner worlds and how my soul works I knew I was looking for something. I just want to give up, but I also know it would be wrong. Never saw those panels of the comics, before, but yes, that is why I love Superman. One of the lessons I've learned, is that the stories I am drawn to, are frequently the ones I am trying to tell myself. There are still good days ahead. Don't surrender to hopelessness and despair.
I am such a fan boy of Superman, you have no idea. I remember going to a drive in to watch the '78 movie. My Dad was more excited than I was. I had no idea. It was the first comic book I read or watched before I could read. first Animated cartoon and live action series from the 50's TV show before the movie. And his example will always be there for me or others. Absolutely love when Lois Lane asks Kal who he is. His answer is epic. A friend.
In the rendition of the TAS Superman is possibly the best, finding out that your different and from another planet can be extremely daunting. You will discover that your real parents don’t exist anymore and that your different from everyone around you. Yes flying is cool and fun, but in the end, how do you accept your heritage ? Well that’s when Pa came into the picture, he taught Clark that his heritage is a gift and that he must stand proud as a Kryptonian In front of the human race by being there when they need him to be and by showing the human race we can all work together to make a better tomorrow for all of us.

I have recently discovered my love for Superman and watched the movies. I asked myself all these questions. Why do I like him so much suddenly? What makes him so special as a character? Then I stumbled upon this last scene you showed in your video with Superman vs the Elite and heared him say that. Since then I have more understanding for his character and I am still awed by this scene. He, as a character, chooses to believe in us when we stumble and lack to believe in ourselves. He is more than just another hero in a custome, he is a symbol of hope, an inspiration. He has his own flaws but he inspires us to always give our best and strive towards the goodness he knows we can create. And even though sometimes it may seem naive, I think it is good to believe in the good we can create and the optimism, especially when you hear all the bad things that happen in the world. Superman shows us that we can make it better, even if we're taking small steps at a time, for example by helping other people and giving them hope and understanding. This alone can have a huge impact on their and our own life(s). And I agree. If we can help even one person, then it is definitely worth to keep fighting for everything we cherish and hold dear! It isn't easy and it won't get any easier, but I believe as long as we have such characters to inspire us, to give us hope and show us the good in us and what we can create, then we can make the world truly a better place.

I like the fact that Superman tries to do the right thing in every situation. He is nearly indestructible but he still puts himself in situations that could kill him such as battling dark side or even someone armed with green kryptonite. He is Clark Kent who plays at being Superman where is Batman plays at being Bruce Wayne. Still, I also enjoy the dark detective, batman.

There have been plenty of versions that experienced doubt ...These recent movies have been brilliant ..optimistic and true to the core of the character ...Snyder's Superman wasn't dark or gritty..his circumstances were... And general audiences DID like Man of steel and BVS ...you can't have hope without darkness... A beacon doesn't shine light through more light..it shines light through darkness ... Superman doesn't always fly in blue skies becauce it's the grey skies that need him the most ...this current superman was portrayed as a pure Altruist ...he constantly put himself in danger for others ...and self sacrifice is the most hopeful heroics you can get...

People(myself included) would rather have Batman's cynicism than superman's optimism, even Batman himself admit that Superman has more humanity than him but that didn't stop us from adoring Batman more than Superman.
Well of course people would prefer to have Batman's cynicism. Because it's easy and lazy. If you assume everything sucks and is going to suck you don't have to use any critical thinking skills. You're not actually wiser from being cynical, although some people think that they are, they're just using it as an excuse to avoid having to acknowledge that there is often more to a situation or people than they want to consider. Because that can lead to hope, which can possibly lead to disappointment, a frightening concept to most. That's why optimism (not naive optimism) is the harder and, in my opinion, better path because it forces you to see the good AND bad in the situation and challenges you to try to see a way that it can be improved for the better. That's what makes Superman important because he promotes that very idea.
Furthermore, your argument seems to be "A is more popular than B; therefore, A is right." and that's not a very substantive argument when taken in either a historical context or even in the context of popular culture. What you're post seems to be imply is because a lot of people prefer cynicism, that makes it the right way, and I can't prescribe to that way of thinking, and just sounds like a miserable way to live. I, of course, can't speak for you or your life since I know little to nothing about you, but that's what your post is telling me. But just as a general rule of thumb, just because something is more popular, doesn't mean it's right. Period. I'm not even saying Batman's perspective is wrong either, don't get me wrong, neither viewpoint is really, but I believe the implication that one is over the other is dangerous.

Yeah I'm sure Batman and most people don't want to use any critical thinking skills and don't want to see the good and bad in a situation and are too lazy to change it for the better. Most of us live as optimist with cynicism as a defense mechanism. Both cynicism and optimism are the 2 sides of the same coin we pay for life.
You're speaking as if Batman doesn't believe in hope and rehabilitation when he's constantly showing that he does. Being self interested does not mean you want to cause harm upon others, this why egoistic altruism and ethical egoism are a thing.
I never said being self-interested meant you did want to cause harm upon others. In fact, I don't think I even used the term. Nor did I say that Batman doesn't believe in hope or rehabilitation. I was talking about cynicism, and by it's very nature, cynicism does not require complex thought. That's why it's often a popular choice, particularly among teenagers. Now, I do agree that it is a very common defense mechanism, but I personally don't think it's a good one. And yes, most people do use it. My question is simple, should they? I personally don't think so, but you are welcome to disagree.
Or we can be both Batman and Superman and have hope in achieving our goals.
