    Let´s imagine we´re flying from Frankfurt to Gatwick. So prior to our flight, me and my captain meet up in the briefing area where we gather all important information for the flight to England. Information about any possible changes at the departure and destination airport, maybe a taxiway is closed, maybe an Instrument Landing System is out of service or enroute navigation aids may give false information, and of course we check for the weather.
    Once in the aircraft we have to perform take-off calculations to get the necessary take-off speeds and power settings. But therefore we need reliable and accurate weather information. So at one point we´re going to consult the so called ATIS. Which stands for Automatic Terminal Information Service. The ATIS is a continuous broadcast of recorded aeronautical information of the airfield. On all airport ground and approach charts you´ll find the necessary ATIS frequency. Yes the ATIS is transmitted via radio. So you tune in the appropriate frequency and then you will hear this:

    Great movie! I work as a meteorologist at one of the major Polish airports, and we also have ATIS terminals on our meteorological station. I can say that, situation when ATIS messages is published only every 30 min are rather rare, only when weather is stable - especially when we have pure CAVOK :)

    Great vid! One thing though: QNH is not local air pressure at the field, that's QFE. QNH is local air pressure corrected to the MSL (by the runway elevation), otherwise your altimeter would indicate zero when on the pavement.

    This is actually interesting. I am a pilot in the US and I always thought knots, feet, etc was universal. I haven't ever piloted an aircraft outside of the states, but that would trip me up good. Good to know. Also, I would add the ATIS information can be used by ATC to catch pilots in BS'ning :).

    Hello Captain Joe ! Thanks for your sharing about aviation ! A question: - Why QNH is in expressed hPa in Europe for exemple (1013.25 hPa normalized) and in inHG (2992 inHg normalized) for North America ? Does altimeters of all planes are configurable with these 2 units or do you have to make a calculation while getting the information from the regional QNH in North America if you have for exemple a European hPa altimeter ?

    Great videos and great production. Have you piloted any planes equipped with auto-land? How does it affect your duties during landing? Is it unnerving to use it in a reduced visibility situations?

    • @ZK-APA
      @ZK-APA 2 года назад

      All ILS cat III approaches have to be with autoland. The Airbus A320 and the B747 both can do autoland so yes most probably he has done it.
      In terms of duties, its more of a monitoring role and take control if something doesnt work out

      (Ich will ja nicht Spoilern...) Wenn man die app-taste (steht für approach) im Airbus betätigt kann man auf dem pfd oben rechts in der Ecke ein Cat III erkennen, da der Autopilot noch aktiviert ist. Im final kann man dann den Autopilot rausnehmen (3x Klick Geräusche nach dem Warnton des Autopiloten steht für die Umstellung der approachart) und dann fliegt man eben von Hand. bei einem Cat III approach (bei schlechten Sichtverhältnissen) wird der zweite Autopilot zusätzlich aktiviert um doppelt abgesichert zu sein. nimmt man dann den Autopiloten nicht raus vor der Landung macht der Airbus autoland. Aber den Rest siehst du wohl in seinem nachfolgenden Video. (er kann das bestimmt besser erklären, als ich)
