  • How helpful is AllTrails? What are some of the risks of using AllTrails? Is it the best resource for finding places to hike or backpack? I discuss some of the merits and drawbacks of this very popular trail app. This is an excerpt of my video about how to do your first hike, which I have here: • YOU CAN DO IT!! How T...

I love AllTrails for all the reasons you bring up AND know that it’s not perfect bc of everything you said. I like to see how many people have done a trail as an indicator of whether it’s a legit trail or not. Sometimes the directions to the trail head are wonky but Gaia has that problem too. It’s also really easy to use. I use Gaia too but it’s not all that user friendly or intuitive. Bottom line, font heave your brain at the door

No app is perfect, that's for sure, and I know Gaia's routes are also crowdsourced, so it has the same issues as AT. It's always wise to verify your trails! The comments can sure be helpful there, as you said. Thank you for watching!

There are lots of trails on Alltrails that are perfectly legal but unofficial. If you limit yourself to only those trails shown on the official maps, you'll miss a lot of really good ones.

Yes, AllTrails has some good trails you may not find on maps, but I've been directed across private property before thanks to that app, and found myself in sketchy places. Nothing is all bad or good- I've also found some great gems there, and I still use the app. But I wouldn't rely on it as my only source of information.

@@WanderingSwitchback Even within AllTrails, you should read the reviews -- especially the recent ones. Any problems with access to private lands will be mentioned (often private owners do allow trail access across their properties, though then they sometimes revoke it if problems crop up).

Sometimes there are easements, for sure. The reviews are one of the best resources on AllTrails. I like getting current trail conditions and other details you can't otherwise find. One example, though, of a trail that's illegal on there is Mossbrae Falls near Dunsmuir, CA. It's on private property, and it is illegal to visit. Frankly, I feel like trails like this should be removed from the site, as it's clear from the comments that people are still going in droves (and trashing the place), despite the property owner's objections. www.alltrails.com/trail/us/california/mossbrae-falls
