    Technology is nice, but I always bring a paper map and compass. Phones break, battery goes flat, etc. Being aware of your route and area is crucial. A little preparation can help, but of course YMMV. When people are too reliant on technology, you're waiting for an accident to happen.

    One of the issues I've had with AllTrails is that there's no way to discern the experience and level of the hiker leaving the review. A new, or inexperienced, hiker is often going to rate a trail differently than someone who is experienced.

    Thank you for this. I am new to AllTrails, and what I haven't yet figured out after my first investigation is segment distances. I look at, say, the JMT, and I want to know the distance from one on-trail campsite to another on-trail campsite, but I can't seem to figure out the proper way to do that. Any tips, anyone?

      @@BackpackingTV Let’s say you sketched a route in red using the custom map drawing tool. Is there a feature that navigates you to stay on the red? I would love that feature for biking but I can’t be looking at my phone while cycling so it should send notifications and maybe voice messages. Or maybe if it sends you a notification before every turn that works too because I can read notifications on my watch.

    Thanks for your informative review. I currently use the free version. Could you please explain how the offline maps work in the + version. In an area that has cell phone coverage the navigation tool tracks your location and records your path on the screen. What happens when you move out of the cell phone coverage area ? Is your location / path still tracked by some other means or do you just refer to the downloaded map to determine your location (as in a hard copy map). Apologies, I am not a tech savvy person.

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  3 месяца назад +1

      No worries! Once you get out of cell range, the downloaded maps use GPS positioning, kinda like a sat phone.

    Let's say I am planning to hike a long distance route like the European E1 or the PCT or something like that. How do I get the app to dispaly an established hiking trail? Do I always have to manually plan the route?

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  25 дней назад +1

      There's manual "course-charting" in the paid version. I haven't considered using it for the entire AT. If you can't, then it will be easy enough to pick destination after destination that keeps you headed in the right direction. I.e., keep picking the route that takes you north.
      Hope that made sense

    Plus they put it on sale a few times a year. Definitely worth it at the sale price if you're not out there too often.
    Also phones are waterproof now, so no worries about them getting wet.

    The one thing that drives me nuts about the user reviews is when people give a trail less than 5 stars and don't say why!!! But that's not AllTrails' fault. I do like the other features and love the 3D view of the trail the best!

    • @Befread

      Would be nice if it forced a written review with a stared review huh.

      @BurroGirl 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@Befread well, no, peeps shouldn't be forced, but hikers could be a little considerate and let future potential users of the trail know what was bad about it.

      Maybe anything less than five stars asks for a quick "how could it be improved" bit?

    Why would anybody need a wrong turn notification if you can literally watching your wrong turn on the same phone.

    • @BackpackingTV
      @BackpackingTV  2 дня назад

      Sometimes you'll goof and walk off trail without realizing. This can be especially prevalent in places where a trail isn't as clearly defined, or maybe you just wander off an access trail or something

    Is this channel really going to keep posting videos and not have a proper introduction to who this host is and what happened to the other one? If not to answer those questions…just to acknowledge a seemingly major shift in the channel. It’s bizarre to not have addressed this by now.

      He also made a reply on a previous video saying he doesn’t want to speak for Stella as she can speak on her own channel. He also mentioned not wanting to throw another introduction at the channel so soon and decided to just crank out content for the time being.

      Ok, now I'm addressing it! I wanted to wait until Stella posted an update video before saying anything. Here is her video! ruclips.net/video/9PUcoX-wrLk/видео.html
      She goes over things here. I didn't want to speak for anyone else, so I stayed quiet and just cranked out videos.
