I have to mention something Alltrails can do, if you have a trail open and click "navigate" it starts the trail and follows your path. But once you start it, your phone can follow you hiking in airplane mode. You can have the whole trail working in airplane mode all for free and it will show you live updates on where you are on the trail. I dont know if thats a mistake, but I can do a whole day hike in airplane mode and only use like 15% battery and it will follow my progress and show where I am on the trail. so while you cant technically download the map, if you start the navigation and then turn off your cell service it will stay active and is basically a live map of the trail. I do trails in Canada for reference.
you just have to make sure to load the trail before you get there and zoom in on the whole thing right? i have tried that before but then when going back on the app it doesn't show the map but it does show the line of your route on a white background and your location which is accurate
Here in Germany, Komoot is very popular. They have constantly developed the app over the last few years and the web interface in the browser is great for planning your tours. Maybe you should try it again. And I don't work for Komoot and have no other relationship with them. 🙂
@@OscarHikesafter ViewRanger shut down, i started using LocusMap. Unfortunately i was forced to switched to Iphone and LocusMap isnt available on it… So I m using OSMAnd (only ios app with free map download) and will probably get Gaia at some point.

7:10 Nope. Alltrails is not the best at any price... the phone app can't edit a route or export a gpx. So, if you have a gps/Garmin watch its completely useless except for researching popular (over used) trails.
Excellent Presentation. This gave me a lot of ideas. I'm planning on going on trails that don't exist and also multi-day multi-week treks, camping along the way. The conclusion I took away is that I need Kamoot. I do need to play with the tool because I want to upload my trails somehow so that others can benefit. If you have any thoughts on this please let me know
Compared to what I saw in your video, best map to use, especially if you already have a GPX file with waypoints, is Locus Map. Check it out. Their maps are super clear.
Thank you, I'll check them out! I'm still mostly using Gaia, but now that I've moved to Italy, I've noticed that its maps aren't always accurate here. Lots of roads/trails are missing or completely wrong, so I have to cross-reference it with Google stallite view because most roads/trais are visible from there.
LoPoints feature makes the Locus Map app even better I just found out. With it you can very easily find points of interest on the map, like drinking water points, bus stops, mountain refuges. Locus Map works great with uploading GPX routes, providing a very useful map layout, great routing, voice navigation, route planning by activity type. LoPoints which I just realized how to use makes this app really amazing!
I wish the offline apps feature would actually work, and you don't need to know where a location is on a map in order to find it and that is would give directions., and use common English and understandable symbols, buts It's a pretty good compass though.
Excellent presentation, thank you. We like to hike in the boondocks of our area and go ‘cross country’ through them… There is no cell coverage here. I need a simple app that works offline, allowing us to pin the position of our vehicle and track the path we took so we can return to our vehicle. What would you recommend?
AllTrails doesn’t seem to be updated. Trails that are no longer passable show as good trails and other trails that have been added in a certain area are not listed. Even if the trails status has changed years ago, AllTrails doesn’t reflect this
Hi Oscar, I've tried Wikiloc which I thought was very user-friendly. I have a motorcycle tour company and I provide my routes through Wikiloc. But recently found out that even though my lists are set to Private, people can still see my routes and download them. So my routes are not private at all. So I've tried All Trails, but this app seems to work exactly the same as Wikiloc. My lists are Private, but my routes are still available to everyone. Obviously, I don't want that as I've spent a lot of time making those routes and it's my livelihood. Do you know of any app that would actually make it possible to hide my routes? But still user-friendly for my clients and easy to organize for me? Many thanks in advance!
Gia gps sucks. Offline maps doesn't work. After downloading the maps and going up to the mountains, I tried to use offline maps but it told me to I needed to log in. It's also very hard to use. Its far from intuitive. They use their own terminology that is very confusing and symbols that take repeated attempts to figure out . You have to know where a specific location is in order to find the directions to it. I think your supposed to use coordinates instead of an address. Google is a lot better and it's free.
Why in God’s name you have used that mindless/hideous background N. O. I. S. E. I cannot understand. Other than that, the content is well presented. Thank you for not smoking! Stay safe always…

Thanks buddy. Very useful info sharing. I myself using both Wikiloc & Gaia. Awesome combination.

I am heading for Palenite forest trails tomorrow and couldn't read it in the better moment 😂😂
Kommoot is absolutely not good for planing Trails with MTB.
Super, super useful thanks. I was wrapping myself in knots trying to figure out which was the better option for me. You have brought great clarity.
Another alternative that I now use to Gaia GPS is Locus Maps. Sometimes, they have better maps and their app isn't as laggy. :)

Good overview, I will have to check these out.
Fantastic comparison overview! Thanks!
Muchas gracias por el vídeo! Personalmente sigo prefiriendo los gps de montaña a los móviles. Gran vídeo!
¿cómo es eso de gps de montaña?

Yeah... I’m watching reviews like this because alltrails is mostly useless. I want the equivalent of paper maps on my phone.
Great video Oscar. Thanks

Awesome, thank you!
Great video man :)
Thanks, useful review.
I use Wikiloc to download maps and insert into my GPS.
Lots of good information. And the plant is back!
I promise to bring it on my next hike as well.
@@OscarHikes I assume it's ultralight?
ViewRanger was the best. Unfortunately, Outdooractive bought them and they switched off access to the app.. :(
;-;
😭
It's funny how OutdoorActive is worse than ViewRanger (RIP).
Gia gps is near perfect, just miss the big scalebar at the bottom.
I need a wear os companion app lol so I'm mostly kamoot ATM
Good reason to not support outdooractive I guess.
Thanks for the great video!

Dude you are concise and to the point. Take a like and comment
Also this video might be due for an update! Would love to learn about new apps
Also view ranger is gone
Gaia is the best due to the quality of the maps. I wish Gaia had a more advanced compass feature though.

That would be perfect and I'm looking for the same did you find one?
I am using Gaia GPS ($60/yr subscription).
have you tried locus?
Have you tried Mapy?
Thanks for the work.
Gran vídeo! Muchas gracias!
Often I need to plan a short route to know, how many km, where to go... so I prefer Komoot over Alltrails. Also like their map style.
Hey, tan you very much for this video, it is usefull really! If you ever some to south east Serbia, let me know, we''ll hike without those apps !

Google Maps is what you're looking for
I liked the simplicity of exercise and I use a National Geography maps, and use my navigation skills for navigation.😁
Gaia is what I use
thank you very much! I'm fine! 0:00

I like trail sense
This is the best review.
no mention of the dire consequences of the interface design.
RIP ViewRanger
Great review.. how about google map..it also has abundant trail maps.. what’s your take ?
Google maps shows very little trail info, at least from my own experience. I would choose amything else over google maps.
Strange.. All these companies and a lot more "unnamed" apps and none of them accomplish it all.... Maybe one day..
Take a shot every time he says 'actually' ;)
That's actually a good idea
Without Locus Maps - irrelevant
he wrote in the comments he s now using it. i used it until i was forced to switch to Iphone.
