    I don't actually own any Dyneema, that I know of, so not really speaking from experience here... but I have been researching the material for some gear I've wanted to make. Some of the downsides are not actually from the Dyneema (strength providing fiber common to ropes and such), but from the polyester laminate used to make it into a waterproof sheet. I was recently on the manufacturers site and they were describing next gen materials made with TPU laminates, which would give the fabric a much more flexy experience than what we currently think of as Dyneema / DCF. As the product offering expands, we have preconceptions to lose. While I suspect you are completely correct in describing Dyneema as over-rated (it is competing with titanium, carbon fiber, and bamboo for the title ...) fancy materials do enable gear innovations that will keep surprising us.

    I have Zpack Free duo since June 2022. I am 65 years old and this is my bikepacking/flyfishing tent. I would not be able to go places to fly fish without dyneema tent. I go for 5-6 days trips and had to cut food intake to one or two meals a day but add one more fly rod and fly reel as a backup to my fly fishing setup. I am not talking about Zpack company here and their substandard service. I am talking about concept of dyneema. I really like your review and wanted to hear drawbacks of the system. See through tent or privacy is not the real issue. You can't see through dyneema I have, at all. Also noise ... I don't think noise will wake up other people around. Headlamp is worse. There is no loud noise and my Therm-a-Rest is noisy. It is superlight pad and it is annoying. Your third point is valid: price. It is really high. Tents is fragile. Zpack no-see-um mesh ripped and I had to repair it with tape. On my second trip I overstretched it. It was my fault since I was thinking it is not fragile. I could send it to repair but I taped it with Tenacious tape. It is also very hot to be inside in sun but you have to be in any other tents mid day to see how bad can be. I had RAB Summit Latok and no ventilation in it since is 4 season tent. It was brutal. Sold it and then got dyneema tent. If you put emergency blanket over the tent you could have nice rest. I learned that climbing mountains when I was younger. I agree with you. It is hot inside tents mid day in summer.

    In my mid-twenties, I went on an archaeological dig in the desert. To avoid the hottest daytime, we started at 6 a.m. and finished at 1 p.m. The camp leaders did regular water breaks for us at least once an hour in addition to fruit breaks (electrolyte supplements weren't a thing back then, but the fruit served the same purpose). They insisted that we drank 6 litres of water during the dig. Those who did were okay, those who didn't got seriously ill. Ever since I have followed these camp rules in hot weather conditions, and they have never let me down.

    Thanks for the video. Water discipline, folks! I have an alarm on my mobile so that I remember to stop and hydrate. Also, in my area all drinking water is bottled. Since I started hiking, I’ve become so concerned about microplastics that I filter everything.

    Soon to be obsolete, but not yet. Not all solutions use the same satellite networks. Some networks have better coverage than others, so the chances of your message getting out is higher on one network than another, especially when under light tree canopy. I’m confident in the next 4-5 years though, there won’t be a need to carry a Garmin if you have the latest iPhone in your pack.

    I have Been backpacking forever and grew up like you on external frames. I spent a few years Using an internal and just couldn't get used to them. When the Vargo Exoti ar2 came out I grabbed it and never looked back. Just shy of 3lbs its comfy and light compared to my old 7 pound camp trails. Prepping for a thru hike with it and added some connection points to the frame. I have been moving more lightweight as I get older and its been a great pack almost got the Yukon. I really hope some one keeps innovating frames. there are so many new things on the market and I feel no one is bringing them to external frames.

    Yay im glad you brought up the non flat belly. I just hiked 4 days on the AT. My first solo backpacking trip. I struggled to figure out where to set the hip belt. My belly is not flat. And I didn't know if i should go above my gut, under, or smack in the middle. It seemed like to sit on my hips properly it should have went in the middle giving me the double bubble. Attractive no. But more importantly it was uncomfortable. I did end up finding under more comfortable sometimes and and above more comfortable other times. By day 2 i was surprised how much my tummy size had changed and was able to do more of a middle cinch with comfort. Any thoughts on this? Another thing I'd be curious about was my butt. It seemed like the bottom of the bag sat on my bubble butt like it was a shelf. It would dig in so that when i was walking and whichever leg was behind me it would really dig in. And sometimes seemed to slosh from butt cheek to butt cheek. I did find rearranging my bag helped with the sloshing feeling, but never could quite eliminate the butt shelf thing. FYI my pack was too heavy. The scale i used to weigh it before I left was incorrect. I was shocked to find after losing 5 days of food and 1 full water bottle my pack was still 41lbs.

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 13 дней назад

      Oh man! That would drive me crazy! I hate when a pack hits my body on every step in the wrong way. A few thoughts. What weight is your pack rated to carry? Was this your first time backpacking with this pack? If it was above the rated weight, it might have added sag, and just be plain uncomfortable carrying too much. Take it on a long day hike carrying about 25 lbs and see how it feels. It may feel better both in the waist and the butt if it has less weight in it. It's worth a try! What gear did you have in the bottom? Having your quilt/sleeping bag in the bottom may be softer on your glutes as you're walking, versus if you had something harder/heavier there. You might consider a pack that rides higher- even an external frame pack (I have a video about why I'm considering going back to that myself), since they tend to ride higher by default. Some internal frame packs are long and skinny, which is nice for bushwhacking, but not nice if you're hitting your bottom or your head. Others tend to be shorter and wider, which might work better for you, as long as it doesn't sit too low. I am wondering if a pack that works better for your body will also sit more comfortably when strapped across your belly. You can certainly keep experimenting to see what works, but also, how far forward does the padding do on your waist belt? If you're built anything like I am, it's not very far. I just bought an old external frame pack that I plan to try out after my knee replacement, and I bought some strap pads to see if that will help give me some added cushioning. These are the ones I bought: amzn.to/3T3hD3n but I can't yet speak to how well this has worked out. Keep me posted how things are going and if you find what works better for you. And feel free to ask if you have any other questions. 😊

      We were in a regular drive-up site. You may want to call the ranger station and ask about the measurements of the bear boxes where you're going. Even in the same campground, though, they can vary. I would take locks and a bike lock for your Yetis. We didn't have room for them in ours because our friend's ice chest isn't bear-resistant and there was too much other stuff, so we didn't even try to fit ours in.

    Great video! Great video! I use lightning tracker at the resort when I’m working in aerial. I’ve never been able to capture lightning but the east coast is not ideal for it. Too many hills/big trees. Beautiful scenery you had! One day I will get out there 😂 Epic photos!

      I swear the west has SO many incredible places! We don't get lightning much at home, so I was stoked to get to try to photograph it in Colorado.

    After watching several of your videos about the convenience of the pstyle I got one and love it. My wife was curious about it ,so I got her one as well and she is fascinated. I used some scrap cotton fabric and made a case myself. Fan of your videos very educational and genuine. ❤

    I’m a die hard pstyle girl, but I’ve been wondering about this one for the types of situations you describe (going through TSA with a pstyle feels awkward!). I do wonder if the edges will feel a little “scrapey”, but I think after seeing this that I’d find it useful regardless. I’m adding one to my list now!

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 25 дней назад

      It's definitely the best compromise of the benefits of the pStyle and compactness/discretion. I'm not sure how they'd even be able to make it less "scrapey" and still work like it does. I definitely notice it, but it's not too bad.

    I know an outdoor recreation instructor who always makes a special chili on the first night of an expedition. It’s designed to “encourage” anyone who might be new to the outdoors and hesitant to poop in the woods. I may have to ask her for the recipe.

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 25 дней назад

      😂😂😂😂😂😂 OMG that's one approach! An aggressive one at that! But having gone with newbs, I can totally see why she would do it! Though I feel like freeze-dried meals have the same effect on me...

      @@WanderingSwitchback The need outweighs the fear, I guess. And gurl SAME (about those freeze-dried meals) So you've also hiked with newbs who were afraid to go in the woods?

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 25 дней назад

      @@Sarahlikestohike sometimes you gotta face your fear! It's amazing to me how many people are afraid of pooping outside, but if it's totally foreign to you, I can understand it. I know some people try to plan trips where they can avoid having to do it, but that's soooo limiting.

      @@WanderingSwitchback Totally, people either don't do certain types of adventures (that they might otherwise enjoy) because there's no bathrooms, or they just hold it (which is terrible for their health). I was a little guilty of that when I first got into hiking, but I've definitely gotten more comfortable with it. The chili helped!

    Hello. Can I use this one with dreamstation go cpap from Philips or with the sleepstyle cpap from Fisher & Paykel? Or I need to do some adaptions?

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 26 дней назад

      That I'm not sure. It looks like it works with the Dreamstation and Dreamstation 2. It comes with a lot of adapters, but I cannot confirm for sure that it will work with either model. If they come with a 12V cord, it will plug into the EasyLonger battery pack with no issues. I hope that helps!

    Got my X-mid, now my next step is a bear canister. I really appreciate your presentation. The UDAP looks like a good option. How do you stow your bear canisters in your backpack?

    • @WanderingSwitchback
      @WanderingSwitchback 29 дней назад

      Thank you! I hope you love your X-Mid! My UDAP fits horizontally across the tops of both of my packs, so I’ve been able to do that consistently. Some people empty it into a bag, put the bag in their pack and strap the empty canister outside their pack. If you have a smaller volume pack (my smallest is 55L), this may be a better move. My BV500 is a bit more challenging, but still fits inside my pack. I hope that helps! Whatever you do, keep it close to your center of gravity (it’s usually the heaviest thing in your pack) and high.

    Thanks for the review. I’ve been a p style fan for several years, but it is clunky to store discretely when not carrying a pack. I recently bought the Go Pee to try and like the fold up design. I agree with you that I will continue to use both depending on what I’m doing. It’s great that we have 2 helpful products to choose from!
