I had no idea that there was tech for cell phones to communicate with satellites without having a special satellite receiver! I will definitely hang on to my Garmin mini for a while, but it's interesting to hear what's available and what's on the horizon!

Apple is testing iOS 18, and it’s available for download if you have beta on! I downloaded it after I filmed this, as someone told me then, so I plan to test that out soon!

Thanks for this info! Super informative. I'm going to be really curious to see how this tech evolves

I appreciate the time you took to help keep us informed. I will stick with the Garmin Mini because I know it will work everywhere between NC and Alaska. My phone will not do that.

For sure. Until we have technology we KNOW we can count on at least as well, it's safer this way.

Great information!!! Thank you I have the iPhone 14 Pro Max which has the satellite feature but I’m looking to buy the garmin reach for a trip I am planning because of sketchy cell service where I am traveling to
Thanks again for the information!!! Love the background scene too

It looks like inReaches are on sale right now at REI! Here's the Mini 2: alnk.to/eZGfmib and the Messenger: alnk.to/9btf04V It's nice to have the added features of the inReach, for sure.
And thank you! The Northern California coastline is exquisite!

Soon to be obsolete, but not yet.
Not all solutions use the same satellite networks. Some networks have better coverage than others, so the chances of your message getting out is higher on one network than another, especially when under light tree canopy.
I’m confident in the next 4-5 years though, there won’t be a need to carry a Garmin if you have the latest iPhone in your pack.

Agreed! I'm sure the technology is coming, and we're certainly headed in that direction, but for those of us frequently out of network coverage, it's wise to keep out satellite messengers for now.
