    In regards to the swift defeat of the Jedi, I would say that there was some characterization of the Sith there. They struggled to fight the Jedi together, because cooperation isn't the Sith way, as evidenced when he just kills his own master. So when the master exits the fight, Malgus is able to fully concentrate on his target, instead of trying to work around another sith. Fighting as a team in melee is harder than you would think and requires a level of trust in the other. It really shows the difference between the Jedi and Sith.

    • @JoelTamalon
      @JoelTamalon 11 месяцев назад +178

      This nails it on the head, it was actually showing the dichotomy of the light and dark. Teamwork vs brutal force, calm fighting vs rage filled constant attacking. Once the Master lost the second saber for that extra defense, the sheer brutality of the Sith overcame him.

      also the theme, that Jedi are good together that make them stronger, but they are stronger when they fight to defend what they believe, thats why Master Jedi, could defeat 2v1 and kill the Lord Sith, but Sith are solo as you said, and thats why The new Lord Sith beat the lonely Jedi.

      More then likely, after all the best way for a Sith master to not be killed by their apprentice is to keep them in check, hold them back until you need them then put them back in their place.

    The other interesting thing with this cinematic, is that it actually shows many of the class options available in the game. The smuggler, the trooper and 2 types of Jedi, as well as the 2 types of Sith. And yeah, this is probably some of the best star wars you're going to find out there! :-P

    So the reason the Sith Apprentice won against the Jedi Master so quickly is because his fighting style is centered around super aggressive strikes using his physical strength around breaking the enemies defense. Thats why he bested the jedi padawan so quickly because she couldnt keep up with his attacks. But when the Jedi Master was fighting him, he was able to predict his attacks and quickly counter the sith UNTIL he threw the explosive ship part at the sith. The sith used that explosion as a distraction to get close to the jedi master, which allowed him to catch the jedi master off guard and put the jedi on full defensive mode which ended the fight because the jedi masters defense wasnt able to keep up with the aggressive nature and physical strength of the sith apprentice

    • @colinboerboom1607
      @colinboerboom1607 10 месяцев назад +16

      I think a small part of it (not a correction but an addendum) is Kao Cen Darach (the Jedi master) is extremely smart and intuitive as a duelist, hence him having the Battlemaster title. Basically playing a chess match, putting his opponent into the position he wants.
      So they show him using a single bladed and double bladed sabers both as a single for a while making his opponent react to a very specific fighting style, then right before a hit turning the double bladed into a true double bladed.
      He pushed his opponent into a position where he could capitalize on an angle his opponent wouldn't think he could reach (him killing him with his back turned was also a good way of showing people with less experience/knowledge of fights and duels).
      When the fight becomes a true 1v1, Malgus knows enough / senses enough, to know he can't let this Jedi dictate the fight or give him even a second of time to think, so he keeps going, from every angle as hard and fast as he can.
      Malgus knows his opponent is a smarter fighter than him, so he takes that away.
      The fight just turns into like Batman without prep time V Doomsday.
      I also like how its kinda implied Malgus wanted his master to die during the fight, hoping to use it to his advantage, which shows how intuitive and battle savvy Malgus is. As right before that moment he repositions.

      @@colinboerboom1607 To add onto this too, Sith apprentices always hid their true power from their masters because it was common knowledge that the only way to advance within the Sith order was to kill your master and take their place. That's another reason why Malgus seemed to have turned it up to 11 after his master fell to the Jedi because he knew that his master was no longer a threat to him and so there was no strategic disadvantage to not show his full power anymore.

    • @triplezeroxz5875

      Cao Cen Darach was exhausted. After fighting a 2v2, then a 1v2, in which one of his foes stepped aside, allowing himself to catch his breath a bit, let his master/Jedi opponent hopefully kill each other, then clean house afterward. Calculated thinking and ferocious execution

    The two on one fight felt like the Jedi master was dominating because Malgus (the Sith apprentice) wasn't going all out and the Jedi also used his enemies' weapons against them, redirecting the lightning from one Sith to the other, which knocked down for a bit Malgus; but after Malgus recovered, we see the change, as he channels his emotions to build up his power and his strikes become faster and stronger, something the Jedi master wasn't expecting. There's also a mistake made by the Jedi master at the end, when he launched the last object, as it exploded, he lost balance and didn't have enough time to recover before being attack by the Sith, who overwhelmed him like an avalanche.
    This trailer is still my favorite of all the SWToR ones, because it takes all the iconic elements that made Star Wars great and blended them together in a short movie that also serves to present some of the core classes of the game, plus a couple of subclasses.

  • @LorePlayingGames
    @LorePlayingGames 10 месяцев назад +9

    I liked how apprentice beat the jedi master there at the end. You could see how Malgus was slowly and slowly building up his rage and anger - which is a source of sith power and overwhelmed the master in the end. His blows became more brutal and powerful, reminded me of Vader's technique, and in fact of Luke when he finally defeated his father.
    Edit: just wait until you see Knights of the Fallen Empire and Knights of the Eternal Throne cinematics.

    It is, first and foremost, a commercial for the game. It highlights the video game's classes (especially the Smuggler class), and the starship combat. It also introduces us to Sateel (who will become the head of the Jedi council. It's, overall, a pretty good advertisement for the game.
    But it also does a great job in four minutes of telling us this whole story. We get the character of the smuggler (even though we never hear his name or the name of his ship - because he's supposed to be the Player). And a bit of the Trooper class (we'll see him in later videos). We see Sateel and her master, and that Sateel is apparently more sensitive to the force, though we see how much more skilled he is (at least in combat). We see Malgus and his master (since Sateel and Malgus are NPCs you meet in the game, they get to have names), and how nasty he can be when he gets mad, (followed up with the whole the Sith apprentice only graduates to master by killing off his master scene).
    We get how surprised the Jedi are that the Sith have reappeared. We see that the Sith are proud to have retaken the Sith homeworld as their first step to their attack on the Republic. We see design elements Star Wars fans are familiar with: all the Sith Empire ships share designs that visually link to the Star Destroyers and TIE Fighters we're familiar with. The smuggler's ship is obviously reminiscent of the Millennium Falcon.
    And we finish the video with both Sateel and Malgus becoming masters in the wake of their own masters' deaths. And they pull of this whole story of the escape from Coroban in a four minute trailer. It's not the best CGI animation ever (the faces, though rather flat, still express enough emotion for you to get what they're feeling.)
    The only real Big Question it leaves hanging (and, as I recall from playing the game - never really answers) is where the heck has the Sith Empire been hiding for a thousand years that they could build a fleet that big and none of the Jedi were even remotely aware that they were out there.

    I watched this cinematic years ago and never really understood why I latched onto the smuggler so quickly. Sure the slow motion shots emphasize the "cool factor", but being placed in the center of clones and jedi at the beginning really does establish his importance from the first instance we see them. Also the iconic sounds and music in star wars almost feels like a cheat code. The degree of information an audience member (both those savvy to to star wars and newcomers to the universe) can immediately grasp onto is staggering. Lastly, the editing was absolutely on point. Before I even realized the Thomas the Tank Engine theme put a smile on my face. Really hammers home your point!

    Just my take on why Malgus was able to beat the Jedi Master: The Sith use emotions like rage to harness the force and make themselves more powerful. I suspect that having his master run through by the Jedi, and then having the Jedi throwing those huge pieces of debris at him fueled his rage and, in essence, he literally did level up from 50 to 100. I'm not an expert on Star Wars lore, but this is how I interpreted it.

    • @luketimewalker
      @luketimewalker 7 месяцев назад +1

      yes, in this game, while all the other classes have a stock of energy or ammo they deplete as they use skills, Jedi Knights & Sith Warriors do the opposite, they have to build up from scratch.
      The Jedi build focus (and some of their best attacks take, say, 5 focus points, which takes a while to get)
      The Sith build... RAGE. And Malgus was more and more enraged, literally, "on fire". So this is a FANTASTIC way of conveying how rage buiilds up for a Sith warrior in SWTOR, so seamless. But then again, Malgus is kind of rage's own Chosen One....
      Which makes me think of.... have you seen the reimagined Death Star Vader vs Obi-Wan fight ? It came years before the Kenobi series, and it's BONKERS.
      It's called Scene 38 Reimagined, by FXitinPost.

    Kao Cen Darach, the Jedi master at one stage during that barrage right at the end lost Satele Shan's double bladed blue saber, then he's very much on the back foot and Malgus's approach was masked by a giant explosion, so might have been a bit quick, but it is just a trailer and we're then trying to get back to Satele and Nico on his ship, keep going though, they're all awesome, about 20 minutes of trailer for the original game then another great cinematic trailer for each expansion, I think it's passed a half hour closer to 45 minutes of awesome star wars footage, I'd love to see them do a full cinematic movie or series with that kind of quality in that Star Wars era.
    also, love your work and new sub

    Something to Note about when Malgus faces off against the jedi master is that he wins by disabling the right arm. If you watch carefully, there's a moment where he swings his right blade past the jedi and then reverses the point of the Saber back towards the body, in that same motion he stretches just enough to jab the shoulder/pectoral of the jedi causing him to drop his padawan's Saber and leaving him at half his defense. Add to that, the fact that Malgus is swinging with tremendous force as made evident by how seamlessly he dismantled the thrown wreckage, and you can see how his power and precision overcame the Master Jedi.
    -Side note from the writing perspective, everything was set up to be that the Master would die in sacrifice. He was never going to win anyway according to what they had set up.

    Also thats Malgus, who was Vader before Vader. The dude is in the same tier as the "Chosen One". The woman in the cinematic will become the Grandmaster of the Jedi Order and her master was the Battlemaster (greatest duelist of his time) and he still knew even together they might not make it so he sends Satele away and buys her some time. Also the trooper she escapes with is gonna help her make a baby who, when fully grown, is one of my favorite characters.

    In regards to your question: to my understanding of SW lore one of the reasons the rule of 2 was implemented for the Sith is because they have to “share” the dark side. More dark side users means they are all collectively weaker. So when the master goes down and is struggling I would assume that his portion of the dark side was relinquished a little making his apprentice that much stronger. And he was able to over power the Jedi Master.
    Also with the rule of 2: 1 master 1 apprentice. And there is only 1 way to become a sith master.

    About the last fight between Malgus and the Jedi Master… I’m a film student but also a historical fencer, which is something that changes my point of view in many of this types of fighting sequences, and I’d say that even though there’s are lot of human imposibilites (obviously, it’s Star Wars), it would still be normal to be completely exhausted after fighting for that long, with magical space powers and all. So in realistic terms, it is not bad at all that Malgus finishes him off that quickly, considering he stopped fighting when he was pushed with the force.
    Also, fighting against two opponents and winning is not impossible, but it’s well damn closed to be, and the fact that the Jedi Master endures that ordeal on his own is also a great factor to consider how drained he is to be an easy target afterwards.

    youre in for a treat with the other SWTOR cinematics! love the breakdowns, feels like im learning more about why i like certain things or feel a disconnect for other things when watching movies or anything really
    my understanding for sith apprentices is that they can sometimes tend to be super powerful because theyre often unbridled wrecking balls of passion/anger - whereas jedi masters tend to be more atuned to the 'cosmic force' rather than the living force. this just means where straight up combat is concerned, sometimes apprentices can overpower. darth maul fighting qui gon and obi wan at the same time in ep 1 comes to mind.
    i think blur studio did these? they also did the elder scrolls online cinematics. they go hard

    17:53 - It's all characterization in that this is the first introduction to the world of The Old Republic for the cold callers (love your term here), and it's important to see that the Jedi are stronger together and the Sith are stronger on their own. The Sith way is built on personal power and rivalry, so while the Jedi are fighting with each other, the Sith are fighting each other to get to the enemy targets.
    Also - the Jedi Master has been fighting two on one for a while, and the first Sith he defeated is primarily a Force user rather than a lightsaber duelist (it's like he was fighting the Wizard of the group) while Darth Malgus (the victor of the battle) is a Sith Warrior rather than a Sith Sorcerer.

    18:14 It's part of the visual storytelling, after his master is hurt, the sith gets scared, and channels that fear into anger - his fight or flight response is most definitely, fight. He's not going to LET the jedi kill him, no matter what. By resuming the fight when all hope would be lost for him, the sith takes control over his future. The jedi, meanwhile, had resigned to death the moment he sent his padawan away. Then, there's the interaction between the padawan and her dead master, and the sith apprentice and his still-living master.
    If you want to go really deep into it, both the fight and its aftermath is like a dialogue between the jedi and the sith, as ideologies.
    The spirit in which every act starting from entering the hangar is as follows: Jedi: "We know what they are and we are not afraid of this enemy. Go, we will defend you." - There is no emotion, there is peace. There is no ignorance, there is knowledge. Then when he sends the padawan away, "Go and do not worry for me. This is my fate, but not yours." - There is no passion, there is serenity. As he fights off both of the sith, deflecting their blows and keeping them at bay, he sends yet another message, "I am not moved by your reckless attacks." - There is no chaos, there is harmony.
    Then, we start "hearing" the sith reply, "If peace is so important to you, then I'll give you the peace of death." - Peace is a lie, there is only passion. As he approaches, "You will not kill me. I will survive. I will show my master that I am better than he is." - Through passion, I gain strength. As he keeps cutting through the objects thrown at him, he continues, "I am the one who decides my fate, not you." Through strength, I gain power. As he kills the jedi, once again, "And that is why you were doomed from the start." - Through power, I gain victory.
    Then both the jedi and the sith say their final pieces as they confront their masters - the padawan, contemplates that death is not an end - but the beginning of a journey, "There is no death, only the force", while the sith goes to his master and confirms the last part of his own code by breaking the chain of command, killing him and ensuring his own ascension: "Through victory my chains are broken."
    It adds up from the beginning that the story is being told from two perspectives at the same time. The jedi are on a station above the sith homeworld, in ruins. We can only surmise they were at least part of the reason why it's in ruins, and that they're blockading people from landing or taking off. More than that, we learn that the world is being desecrated by smugglers looting the graves. The jedi are implied to be the ones in the right, but they are quite literally occupying a former enemy's homeworld and making sure it remains uninhabited. They're not necessarily 100% in the right here. The sith are the aggressors, yes, but to themselves, they're liberators, while to the jedi, the republic are only keeping the peace by preventing resettlement. We see the "good guys" winning, Nico and Malcolm (presumably) slaughtering the empire's troops, but at the same time we see an uphill battle to retake what was theirs to begin with. It culminates with the sith themselves boarding the station, and from then on the philosophical back and forth in the form of combat is had.
    It's all on purpose, so you can view the scene from either point of view, because the game itself also allows you to play from either point of view. It's a little curious that you haven't picked up on those subtleties - if you don't know too much about star wars I can understand not getting the philosophical choreography, but the rest is stated and shown in the trailer.

    I think these cinematics really drew what a lot of invested Star Wars fans believe what the universe should entail. Which lead to the great disappointment of what we received following the prequels in terms of saber duels and the scale of the stakes. While they were bigger, they felt more detached and random than impactful and relevant.

    Think Vader would have a word with you about losing just cause you use telekinesis.. Seems to recall it working out well enough for him in Empire, tho granted that was more of a playing with your victim than trying to kill off Luke..
    Malgus wining swiftly i think comes down to his selfishness, his focus increases as his rage builds and he gets more into the fight, and he becomes stronger as that happens, he is not vexed by his master being taken out but almost vitalized by it.
    Also someone mentioned the difference between Sith/Jedi, working as a team/your own game, again his focus and rage as it builds, Malgus is neigh unstoppable in lore i think it really showed this well..

    When you play a juggernaut in the game it feels excatly like Malgus in this video. A brutal sith warrior who jumps right into the action and brings death and destruction.
    Maybe Malgus had to build up enough rage to get from lvl 50 to 100 or he held back when his master was involved because he wanted him to get stabbed and wounded to finish him off like he did in the end. It is the way of the Sith that the apprentice will kill his master, sooner or later. The apprentice know it and the master know it, too. So it is a matter of time and chances, before the master get rid of the apprentice beacuse he became a thread, or the apprentice kill the master to become the new master.
    Malgus is an important character in the game and you get to know his story when you get into dungeon missions. He is a military leader and set up multiple tasks, which the player gets invited to.

    Here's another thing about fighting against two opponents (this comes from my HEMA experience), it is very much possible to exploit the motion of one opponent against the other, like how the Jedi master redirected the lightning
    Two opponents getting in each other's way are inferior to one of them have the freedom of movement and having the ability to really fight in their own style
    So it's not just Sith vs Jedi, though it is used for that, there's a practical element to it too

    You know, Malgus killing his master really is, in my opinion, is a reference to the rule of two, even though Darth Bane's time was still a long, long way off (at least 2,500 years later from Malgus' time). As it was, the rule of two states that there can only be two Sith at any given time, a master and an apprentice. However, this concept stipulates that even though there aren't as many Sith fighting each other after Bane's time as considered to Malgus' era, the traditions of Sith infighting never changed. Sooner or later, one of the two will end up killing each other for the sake of enhancing their own power. Either the apprentice kills his/her master and takes their place, or the master kills the apprentice and simply replaces them with another, and the cycle continues. You can even experience this yourself by playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, particularly the Sith Inquisitor and Sith Warrior storylines.

    The Sith are fueled by the Dark Side of the force. So emotions such as anger and rage have an extreme impact on their power level. And among the Sith, the apprentice's goal is almost always to overthrow and cast down their Master. When the Jedi Master cut down the Sith Master, the Apprentice was enraged because essentially the Jedi robbed him of his opportunity to truly best his Master at some point on his own. So his rage actually did send him from 50 to 100 like you mentioned and it fed into his attacks. It caught the Jedi off guard just how ferocious Malgus became and he was overwhelmed in a short time. Which isn't unrealistic for swordfighting.

    Well this came out of nowhere :) This was really entertaining and informative. These vids are amazing, the sequel fights have nothing on them tbh the less we talk about those movies the better. Can't wait for the rest, they're really good.

    When Jedi train students, they help them, they strive to make their apprentices better. Out of a 100 students, you might get a few failures that join the support side of the Order, the Agri Corps. Most students will be average, a select few will be amazing. They all train together, spar, no real threat to their lives until they become Padawans and join a Knight/Master on real world missions. Even then most missions are peacekeeping
    When it comes to Sith, you start with 100 students, you might only have 10 or fewer left afterwards. Maybe even only one. Because the Sith are competing against each other, its more like the Spartan Agoge, but even more brutal. Sith students arent "allowed" to kill each other, but what it really means is "not allowed to get caught killing each other." So what you get is apprentices that graduate having faced trials much more demanding and deadlier than what Jedi go through. They've already had fights to the death against other force users who are fighting to kill, whereas Jedi fight defensively, without the intent to kill.
    Your average Jedi Academy graduate is always going to be weaker than your average Sith Academy graduate, because Sith training is that much harder. It's like having someone who played a game on normal going against someone who beat the game on legendary go against each other in multiplayer. The skills, reaction times, and instincts will be vastly different.

    Those Old Republic trailer were just stunning. My favorite one was the Knights of the Fallen Empire trailer with the two broders. Just sooooo good and a great example for the concept of show don´t tell
