The thing with the Old Republic trailers is that there's several years of real time and game story between the Malgus trailers and this new batch of trailers. All the Malgus trailers were promotions for the game's original release, it came out and then Malgus himself got defeated in game - the story then shifts focus a few times before embarking on a (great) new arc with these characters in these trailers.
Pretty much every major story is spaced out on the timeline. The first three trailers take place years before the start of the game. The main campaign takes place over the course of three years in universe, Malgus gets defeated at the very end of that and then post launch content starts. Kotfe starts and you literally get thrown in carbonite for five years Stuff like this does a good job of making the player feel like just another footnote in a rich history
They are the Eternal Empire, The last attempt of the Sith Vitiate to create a perfect Empire to rule over the entire galaxy, Deeming the Sith empire rotten to its core and flawed in its structure, and the jedi...well, he's a Sith.
To be fair the Eternal Empire was a thing before Vitiate but he saw what it could be. In the second part of the expansion when you speak to a certain character (won't say who just in case) they say that Valkorian (the Emperor here) used to be kind and loving but then he changed. That is when Vitiate took over.
@@TheEpictrooper Yes, but he took over and "hollowed out" Valkorian much longer ago than you are insinuating. Valkorian has been Vitiate for a long time, hence why they call him their Immortal Emperor, because he has lived for so long. That wouldn't happen if he hadn't already been Vitiate for a while. I think the whole change in his character had more to do with the turmoil with the Sith Empire and him having to focus so much on it for a time (like when the war was raging), before he ultimately washed his hands of it and abandoned them for Zakuul, which was majorly prompted by the Knight striking down his primary body at the time; Vitiate.
Lore drop for you Kai: The Twins, Arcann (White) and Thexan (Black) are members of the Eternal Empire ruled by their father, Valkorion, who was also Darth Vitiate who had been mind hopping from host body to host body for several centuries, since he was also Emperor of the Sith Empire but abandoned them because he saw that the structure that Empire had built ended up fundamentally flawed. The Eternal Empire was waging war against both the Sith Empire and the Republic. The next trailer Betrayed, mostly will focus on the Twins' Sister, Vaylin and their mother, Senya. this one, and the next 2 trailers, are in my opinion, better than the first three. also, the 6th Trailer, Disorder, brings back Malgus after he has betrayed the Sith Empire.
Always loved how they turned the traditional black = evil, white = good guy routine. Your point around the 15:50'ish mark, it aint motion blur, it's semi poorly done hair.. Also note when they say "And when darkness finds you" not only is it Arcann (the twin in white) but his eyes are turned Sith, they have done an amazing job at showing his fall to the dark side, where while they are both fighting a war, his brother Thexan is much more calm in every scene, i never saw it as him just doing as daddy says, but rather as him having a better grip on his emotions and thus not being the one falling to the dark side. And not only can you feel it when Valkorion turns his back on them in the end, you can hears his breath telling us how enraged he is at that moment, he has lost an arm, and eye, and still nothing is good enough for their father.. You can almost hear the "How dare he turn his back".. Epic moment. And the end where he kills his brother, the yellow glow on the almost black shoulder armour.. Beautiful. Valkorion also does not praise him by the end, he finally accepts him as his son.. The thing that Arcann has been longing for all along..
One thing I didn't notice until someone pointed it out, throughout the video you have the same visual motif of the brothers holding hands. But until the last scene, it's always Thexan above, pulling Arcann up, or holding Arcann's hand while he is undergoing surgery, he never lets go. Only in the last scene where they are reversed does Arcann let go of Thexan.
One thing to remember about star wars is that dark side doesnt always mean sith and light side doesn't always mean jedi. These guys are unalined force users invading the rest of the galaxy
@@kaizammit The leader of these guys is a Sith but the Eternal Empire itself was supposed to be more balanced than either Sith or Jedi, they couldn't keep it up in the long run given who was in charge.
The detail I noticed is when right before Arcann is Force-pulled by Thexan, Valkorian shows a slight smirk. This shows the fight between the two brothers is what he was hoping for all the years as he was let down by their equality throughout their lives.
If only Disney could make films/shows with this kind of quality. These short cinematics that are only a couple of minutes of long have me more invested than any of Disney’s projects that last for hours, with the exception of Rogue One, because that film is peak.
After the climactic moment, you can see the father's eyes are also yellow/orange with the Dark Side of the Force. What a great theme, a great storyline across this. I don't know this story, I don't know the characters. I only know what I see in this cinematic, so bear with me! Thematically, two sons, and an enigmatic, unloving Father. The undertone is he wants something from them, but will not say. One son does all that is asked of him, knows his place. The other, does all that is asked of him, but only wants in return recognition, maybe approval, as a son would, for doing well. The Father, enigmatic, hardly ever looks upon them. They are nothing to him. All he must do to stoke the embers of darkness is continue silently, giving them nothing, and soon he will see which is the one. Tragically, it's the one who seeks his approval, or love, the most for their deeds, and in a crime of passion and darkness, kills his own brother. Now, what was never openly commanded, was volunteered. And there he is; the father, looking upon his son for the first time with the same orange eyes he had when he killed his own brother. The boy has at last, after all this life of war and suffering, finally done something worthy of his father's approval. Spectacular theming, and quite sad.

One of my favorites. Here's a random fact about this cinematic, at 5:55 you can see Valkorion smirk just a bit right before his son is pulled away from him. That moment right there is so powerful because he now knows his son is ready for what he has in store for him
Love the subtle hints you see through the trailer. Traditionally White is the color of good and purity whereas black is for evil or something flawed, but they flipped it the other way around here. You can see through the trailer that Arcann (White) always lived in the shadow of his brother Thexan (Black) and had a deep psychological issue with never being "good enough" for their father but the bond that he had with his brother is what kept them both unaligned in the force, which you can see them always giving each other a firm grip (as boys when Thexan helps his brother up after beating all the guards) and his brother being there for him and holding tightly as he is being operated on the battlefield. You see how slowly Arcann is losing his balance within the force, and the line "when darkness finds you,you will face it ALONE" . I love how you can feel his rage and anger when their father turned his back on them like so many times before. The scene is so well made and built up,it doesn't need dialogue...we all thought it while watching it "HOW DARE YOU TURN YOUR BACK ON ME?! AFTER ALL I HAVE GIVEN?! AFTER ALL I HAVE SACRIFICED?!". And how his iris turns orange/yellow,signifying he utterly lost control and embraced his rage in order to murder his ungrateful father as well as Valkorion SMIRKING ever so subtley as he is within striking range is what tells you,he PLANNED all of this! Tragic that he murdered his brother who only wanted to bring him back to balance once more. And him desperately holding his brother's arm tightly after fatally injuring him, hoping he can still be there for him like his brother was always there for him is what always brings me to tears.
Thanks for watching this one! Absolutely love this cinematic and its up there; as far as being one of my favorites. I asked about it previously, what a lovely coincidence that you had it in the works already. Very cool.
You picked out a lot of details I had never noticed or understood in this trailer. Really great pick to look at as a subject and example of techniques.
My favorite small detail was the emperor (the father) didn't turn away when his son was getting beaten or when the other son helped, he turned away when they looked for his approval.
Watching your reactions as a group, I find the change in establishing shot interesting for this one. Ordinarily I wouldn't think much of it, but you're right that we generally start with a view of a planet from space. Here we get a view of space from a planet. The same overall message is conveys but it first lays the ground I think of the strangeness that underscores this cinematic. This is Star Wars, but not as you know it.
The videos from this expansion to Old Republic are some of my favorites rivaled only by a few nostalgic WoW trailers. "Betrayed" the next one in the series is my all time favorite game trailer.
Without getting too into the lore, it's a third party in the mix, another empire that is neither sith nor Jedi. I like how they show this from the yellow lightsabers and the fact that they're after both parties for power
I'm happy you also declared this one as your favorite, it's the same for me. What separates this trailer from the others in my opinion, is that this one tells a complete story. And boy is it a story and a half! While the other trailer bring tears to my eyes through epicness, this one actually makes me fighting my tears of sadness. This trailer captures the very essence of Star Wars and perfectly compresses it to a few minutes. I love this cinematic and watched it at least a dozen times, but it also reminds me how deep the Star Wars franchise has fallen nowadays. It's bittersweet to dwell on the good old times.
It's a third party faction. Neither sith nor jedi, neither light nor dark, but powerful with the force. They call themselves the eternal empire, and their seat of power is the eternal throne.
You explain the shots, and catch on details beautifully! Never have I seen such a thorough breakdown of these magnificent trailers before, so I thank you for taking the time, and really appreciating them.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure we’d all like to watch a movie with those characters. It’s a bummer what disneys done to the franchise and the fact that Disney will probably never revisit the old republic let alone these specific characters.
My favorite one in all of the series. It's badass but tells a neat story (neater when you know the clues like lightsaber colors ;-) ). Characters are well defined with little to no words. And the emotions he goes through after killing his brother 'die / yeah I won / oh sh!t my brother / what have I done / what am I going to do without him"? It is sooo good.
In Star Wars, there is a light side and a dark side (basic, but it works.) The light side embodies selflessness: in essence, being one with the force but not grasping it, but rather allowing it to flow in and through you as an extension of your will, allowing you to help others. The dark side is the opposite and embodies selfishness: instead of flowing with the force, you grasp it and wield it like the tool that it is in order to get whatever you want. The Jedi tend to stray towards the light side, and the Sith tend to stray towards the dark side, but those are not the only factions to have force sensitivity. Anyone who is force sensitive can choose to lean either way, and those rare force users who are able to balance between light and dark (i.e. Yoda) are able to tap into both sides. As the trailer progresses, you see they are both force sensitive, but where the "prodigal son" is skilled enough to stay neutral in his alignment, wielding the force naturally as both extension and weapon. The second son, who has always been second, shows anger, resentment, and bitterness, all of which fester and grow and allow him to descend down the path of the dark side. One thing you won't get from anything but the books is that the dark side users are able to draw power from other people's fear and anger. The stronger those emotions are, charging the air, the stronger a user of the dark side becomes. So, all this war and killing just juices up the second brother and makes him more powerful, which he comes to crave. The crowning achievement of any true Sith is the ability to channel so much hatred that their eyes change from their base color to yellow and red. It was a really neat touch for the animators to add in when the second brother snaps and tries to kill his father and ends up killing his brother, causing his eyes change and then change back as he lets go of his anger in that second moment. Someone did an edit of Anakin/Vader when he's fighting Ahsoka (in rebels) where they did the eye change, and it always brings chills. This is probably my favorite of the Old Republic trailers. Hope that clears up why these guys are hunting both factions, and how they are able to "fall to the dark side" without being Jedi or Sith, necessarily. EDIT: Typically, the easiest/best way to fully convert someone to the ways of the Sith is to have them kill/sacrifice someone that they love (At this point, pretty sure this has become a trope.) The logic behind this is more than likely that most people reach their darkest and most emotionally volatile point right after the tragic loss of a loved one.
Aw hell yeah. The other trailers are more flashy and whatnot, but they are nothing compared to this one. Such a succinct story and such a short time. Was a blast to hear more about what made it work so well. Oh! I'm also super curious, I can definitely see the reasons for catchment, but what are some reasons to not include it? Like that shot of the brother in black, what does having no catchment do for that shot?
Neat trailer and awesome break down Kai! I gotta ask. Since you’ve been doing this for your channel have you learned anything in particular from these other works we’ve looked at? If so mind sharing? Keep up the good work sir!
These guys are the sons of the Eternal Emperor Vitiate from the Eternal Empire, he (the old dude) was actually the Sith Emperor Darth Tenebre. He soul transferred at the end of his life to the guy in the eternal empire Vitiate although he already had a part of himself in VItiate but he did a full consciousness transfer to him at the end of his life and came back and conquered. The Sith Empire was really a means to an end for the Sith Emperor, his true goal was always for the Eternal Empire i believe. For a time they conquered and subjugated both the Sith Empire and the Republic. They killed both Jedi and Sith. At the end of their campaign they present the flags of both the governments and the lightsabers as signs of both conquest and trophies to their father. I think these games take place like 10,000 years before Luke was born. So this is the Old Republic era. About 1000 years before Luke, the last vestiges of the Sith Empire were finally destroyed and Darth Bane brought the Rule of two into true fruition. Darth Revan had been the founder of the rule of two but no one really enforced it until Darth Bane killed off the rest of the Sith and took an apprentice. Also Star Wars the Old Republic was and continues to be great at storytelling and cinematics...., but the gameplay is average but it's the stories that keep me coming back. Also they are not sith or Jedi. Sith and Jedi are ideological groups, but they are not the only force users. Sorry for the stops starts of my explanation its cause i kept pausing and editing this comment as your questions arose. Now that i am at the end of your video i really wanted to say how much I enjoy and appreciate your videos. It's really fun to watch and although i am no cinematographer i have learned so much as a layman. Thanks again dude. Have a good one.
What song do you have as the intro? is it your own song, like its only made to be a intro or is it a whole song originally? Just wanna know cause it feels like such a good summer track
*Barges in with huge popcorn in one hand & soda in the other... Wait the comments have started, Star Trek Advert AND Star Wars Review, did the two fanbases start up their heated debates yet? Thanks Kai for the game cinematic uploads, so lovely too see your positive reactions to them, means a lot to gamers because most of these awesome cinematics go unnoticed by non-gamers & well noticed & thoroughly enjoyed by gamers, this is one of the best parts, playing through & grinding a game to be rewarded with a beautiful cinematic to carry you through the rest of it.
I wouldn’t confused good and evil with loyal and disloyal. Thexan wasn’t a “good guy”, but loyal to his father, Valkorion. Arcann saw he was underutilized and overlooked so he acted on it.
Also my favorite of the Old Republic cinematics, if you take suggestions from comments: I want to recommend the dawn of war III trailer, a warhammer 40K trailer.
You want to know a little something about Darth Malgus? He was thought to have died, 3 times. but the third time, he went into stasis. Hundreds of years after the original trilogy, in the unexplored future barely anyone knows. The Republic will find him and accidentally awaken him. And this causes a chain reaction that leads to the Sith returning, to him conquering the ENTIRE galaxy and re-establishing the Sith Empire that came before from the Old Republic's Era. Even if Anakin is the chosen one, Darth Malgus is a thousand times scarier.
Even if they did bring this to the screen people would still find something to complain about. You can do a lot with animation, there's only so much you can do with real people.
The sith emperor in that time can transfer his soul ghost from body to a new body its the 3 time he did it he learnd how to do it and as a sith you never give that power to no one

My favorite small detail was the emperor (the father) didn't turn away when his son was getting beaten or when the other son helped, he turned away when they looked for his approval.
I love that the sponsor for a Star Wars video is a Star Trek game 😂 good thing I love both (at the very least, old school stuff, for both 😋)
I did it on purpose because I love both too. Some peeps are like "it's one or the other!"
I thought Arcann arm being replaced with mechincal and face burns covered were more like a representation of his loss of his humanity.
I have been waiting for this. Yes!!!!!
The videos from this expansion to Old Republic are some of my favorites rivaled only by a few nostalgic WoW trailers. "Betrayed" the next one in the series is my all time favorite game trailer.
I"VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS. THANK YOU
You should check out tomorrows video too!
Wow, thanks for the comment and thank you for watching, I appreciate it! Another video upload tomorrow, the next part.
Yessssss been waiting for you to react to this trailer!!
Skip to 2:50 to get past the ad
ooosh on to the next another great video keep em coming
Tomorrow!!
was hoping youd notice the dads eyes turn yellow at the end
Yeah, I’m pretty sure we’d all like to watch a movie with those characters. It’s a bummer what disneys done to the franchise and the fact that Disney will probably never revisit the old republic let alone these specific characters.
one of my more favorite ones
My favorite one in all of the series.
It's badass but tells a neat story (neater when you know the clues like lightsaber colors ;-) ).
Characters are well defined with little to no words.
And the emotions he goes through after killing his brother 'die / yeah I won / oh sh!t my brother / what have I done / what am I going to do without him"?
It is sooo good.
I love that, how you put a little Star Trek before the SW breakdown :D
I love/enjoy both franchises from what I've seen of them so for me, it was the perfect fit!
I was hoping you’d get to this one. It’s one of my favorites.
Mine too! However, saying that... Wait until tomorrows video!
These are the starwars movies we want to watch
Aw hell yeah. The other trailers are more flashy and whatnot, but they are nothing compared to this one. Such a succinct story and such a short time. Was a blast to hear more about what made it work so well. Oh! I'm also super curious, I can definitely see the reasons for catchment, but what are some reasons to not include it? Like that shot of the brother in black, what does having no catchment do for that shot?
Timestamp please.
29:38 I believe. @@kaizammit
You should watch The Old Republic: Knights of the external throne - "Betrayal" trailer. It's the smaller sister of the twins.
Uploading tomorrow, make sure you come back :D
Neat trailer and awesome break down Kai! I gotta ask. Since you’ve been doing this for your channel have you learned anything in particular from these other works we’ve looked at? If so mind sharing? Keep up the good work sir!
I don't think I've learnt anything in technique so far but more around narrative and structure. A few have caught me off guard which has been amazing!
@@kaizammit Right on!!
I kinda want to see you breakdown all the assassin's Creed trailer's
I've reacted to them but never broke one of them down. What one would you choose if I were to consider it?
After you finished The Old Republic trailers you should react to the Star Wars Squadrons Cinematic CG Short Trailer "Hunted"
I think I shall haha! Thank you for letting me know about it.
Thank you for watching and commenting, I love it!
Kinda random but if u like the evolution of characters building momentum into an epic clash check out episode 304-305 of gintama
Can't wait till he see betrayed
Uploading today! ✌🏻
30:50 is it just me, or does the dad kind of smirk a little. cant tell if its just the lighting, or if his mouth/cheeks actually move
Some of the hardest cinematic trailers from swtor
What song do you have as the intro? is it your own song, like its only made to be a intro or is it a whole song originally? Just wanna know cause it feels like such a good summer track
It's titled Blue Dream by Cheel: ruclips.net/video/48SuFtm4YC0/видео.html
The only thing I do is slow it down by 10% so it's more relaxing.
I'm glad you enjoy the videos! I always have fun with these.
Star Trek ad in a Star Wars video is wild
I'm a rebel fella! Haha
Rainbow six siege article 5
Rainbow six Vegas 2 trailer.
I know I have recommended them before!
Again love the content.
Keep on letting me know about them!
I wouldn’t confused good and evil with loyal and disloyal. Thexan wasn’t a “good guy”, but loyal to his father, Valkorion. Arcann saw he was underutilized and overlooked so he acted on it.
i found the sponsor video kinda funny in a star wars video
So did I and that's why I did it. :D
@@kaizammit lol
Next one is gonna blow your mind 😁
Come back tomorrow and you'll see for yourself.
@@kaizammit Will do! Love your work in these videos, very interesting and insightful.
Also my favorite of the Old Republic cinematics, if you take suggestions from comments: I want to recommend the dawn of war III trailer, a warhammer 40K trailer.
Coming to the channel soon, I've already recorded the Dawn of War cinematics so I've got you covered! :D
Yeah it sucks that the brother was blinded with his hate and anger and cut down his brother on accident only realizing what he did after he did it
You want to know a little something about Darth Malgus? He was thought to have died, 3 times. but the third time, he went into stasis.
Hundreds of years after the original trilogy, in the unexplored future barely anyone knows. The Republic will find him and accidentally awaken him. And this causes a chain reaction that leads to the Sith returning, to him conquering the ENTIRE galaxy and re-establishing the Sith Empire that came before from the Old Republic's Era. Even if Anakin is the chosen one, Darth Malgus is a thousand times scarier.
Too bad that none of the recent TV series gets close to this.
So, how does this compare to the acolyte? Both have twins. :D
One is better… a lot better…
His Father are the old Sith Imperator from the original Game
Emperor, Vitiate.
brave, startrek ad on a star wars video lol
My middle name fella! haha
Never taught to see star wars and star trek in one video🤣
Disney could give us stories like this but nah.
They would have made millions off movies like this, if only they bothered to listen to the fans! Still cool trailers tho
26
Mate if you liked this one wait for the next!
Sucks you ain’t doing this in the storyline would make much more sense in the story telling
Sigh. The star wars that could have been.
Even if they did bring this to the screen people would still find something to complain about. You can do a lot with animation, there's only so much you can do with real people.
Its the sith emperos sons and this is the sith emperos new super empire he built up with zero flaws unlike the republic & sith do have
The sith emperor in that time can transfer his soul ghost from body to a new body its the 3 time he did it he learnd how to do it and as a sith you never give that power to no one
