    25:37 This is before the establishment of the rule of two so there's a lot of Sith in the galaxy. There are even multiple sith fighting each other for the title of emperor and forming their own groups. But you'll see more of that in the next cinematics :D

    The soldiers here are aren't clones, they're regular people. Clones are introduced in Attack of The Clones and these cinematics take place roughly 3,000 years before the movies. If I had to guess the reason they look so similar to Clone Troopers is purely for the familiarity factor of giving you something to relate with if you saw the movies before watching this.
    For the in-universe reason, the sith and republic constantly took inspiration from Mandalorian armor designs to design their own armor/military with.

    • @vert2552
      @vert2552 7 месяцев назад +10

      exactly, a lot of tech and overall design came from Mandalorians so it wouldn't be crazy to have some similiarity in design of these soldiers and clones.... and as you said, it's important for them to make it so that even average player and not crazy fans, can recognize sides, characters and be able to get right into the universe. I'd say they did great job

    The Old republic cinematics get better and better with each one. The next one in the series is called "deceived" which is amazing. Funnily enough the deceived trailer which is last one for the base game was acutally the reveal trailer for the game, before the Return and Hope. The original release order for the trailers was the Deceived, Hope and then the Return, but in the games timeline its The Return, Hope and Deceived. Blur studio's who made this, are some of the best CGI trailer studio's right up there with Blizzard. Blur Studios are responsible for the CGI for, The old Republic, Halo 2 and Halo wars, The Elder Scrolls online trailer movie, Warhammer 40k Dawn of War intro. They also helmed netflix's Love, Death and robots series.

    The helmetless republic trooper in the trailer is Jace Malcolm, and he was also in the last trailer, losing his helmet in an explosion (which gave the smuggler his time to shine on-screen as Jace was recovering in the background). He was referred to by the smuggler as "Corporal", and since this is taking place years after that trailer - you can see at 1:33 he has a special shoulder pauldron to signify his new higher rank as the commanding officer of Havoc Squad (the specific unit in this trailer).
    If that wasn't enough info, the Jedi is Satele Shan, she and Jace Malcolm are together and had a child named Theron Shan.

      @@kaizammit Yup, this game takes place around 3,000 years before the movies. These troopers are just men and women enlisting in the military and becoming battle hardened through fighting Sith and Imperial soldiers on a near daily basis.

    16:22 - That dude, even more than the Trooper leader, was a large part of why I went Republic Trooper Vanguard for my first character starting in the Beta and going forward. I don't know how much of a gamer you personally are, but this short spoke to my Tank heart. It takes a certain kind of crazy to want to be the guy that jumps into a situation, finds the biggest threat, and challenges it to a fight.

  • @thetalantonx
    @thetalantonx 7 месяцев назад +13

    4:22 - The Force. She's basically doing a very, very localized Force Push in a way that's rare to see and hard to do. Her ancestor, Bastila Shan (from the first Knights of the Old Republic game, 300 years before the MMO) was also unusually gifted with the Force, able to do a power called Battle Meditation (it links in an entire side and provides synergy.)

    • @CommanderBly5052
      @CommanderBly5052 6 месяцев назад +5

      The force power she’s using is called Tutaminis which absorbs/dissipates the energy. While it was a common ability that all Jedi were taught, it was really hard to actually block blaster bolts and lightsaber blades.
      Examples of Tutaminis are: Yoda blocking force lightning from Count Dooku and Emperor Palpatine in episodes 2 and 3, and Darth Vader blocking the blaster bolts from Han Solo in episode 5

    Fyi: the cinematics you're watching take place more than 3,600 years before the events in the Star Wars films. during this time there are essentially two superpower galactic "nations at war over control of the galaxy as a whole the titular 'old republic' (though to them in current obvi) and the Sith Empire, the latter ruled by the Sith (who were a species as in Malgus' master from the first cinematic), yes the ships at the end are the republic ones, and the troops on both sides are just patriotic troops like today's military, fighting to keep the enemy at bay(or conquer the galaxy respectively) hope this helps!

    12:09 - I've seen these short films dozens if not over a hundred times and it wasn't until this breakdown that I really fully appreciated the significance of the movements. By breaking usual convention by multi-axis movement in each slice of time and jumping days between shots in seconds it really grabs the viewer and throws them along the course of this "lightning war." Likewise the peace, then the troop formation on the plains and then the single file progression through a flaming scene. Very strong and historical connotations for each of those type of movements.

    The Old Republic takes place long before the Rule of Two was implemented, so there are a TON of Sith Lords everywhere. That's ultimately what led to their fall with all the infighting and power grabs, which is why Darth Bane created that rule to stop it from happening again, but also to preserve the Sith for future endeavours.
    And yes, that is Darth Malgus and Satele Shan, as well as the same Republic Trooper, Jace Malcolm, from the first one. Players could be Jedi Knights, Jedi Consulars, Troopers, and Smugglers (on the Republic side), or Sith Warriors, Sith Inquisitors, Bounty Hunters, or Imperial Agents on the Imperial side, so they were also given representation in the cinematics, rather than just focusing on the Jedi/Sith.

    SWtOR as a game tells a story from 3800 years before E1 "The Phantom Menace". Thats why you see so much Sith and Jedi in the videos. I played SWtOR for a few years. The storytelling in the game for each class you can play is so nice and full of twists based on your choices made in the conversations with the npc´s. The power she (Satele Shan) uses is called from the "Tutaminis" skills, which is all about absorbing power. Like Yoda did against Dooku in E2 when Dooku threw lightnings towards Yoda and he absorbed them. Or against Palpatine in E3

    I know someone already commented on this, but this was during the time of the Sith Empire (Not the Galactic Empire made by Sidious.) There was the Sith Council and the Sith emperor, which was the ruling body of the Sith empire. Satele Shan is the Grandmaster of the Jedi Order at the time of this cinematic (or soon after) and she is the Padawan from the first cinematic. The main Republic commander in this cinematic is also from the first cinematic, he was the soldier that escaped with the smuggler and Satele and is one of the playable classes for the republic alongside the smuggler class and the two different Jedi classes, which is why he had so much focus in this cinematic as he "represents" some of the players' characters.

    All three of the main characters in this cinematic were in the first one. In the case of the soldier, he is the one that survives, uses the heavy weapon to drive off the troops after the smuggler's pistol bit and catches Satele Shan (the Jedi master here - she was an apprentice in the first one) when she jumps for the spacecraft's ramp. I believe the difference you are spotting in her character design is to denote the difference in age and experience as there is an in universe time gap between these story clips (I believe this war is supposed to last about 40 years on and off).

    34:25 You say that running scene is first time we see her using double ended lightsaber in this video, but we also see it in previous video and just before she starts running we see her spinning the lightsaber with one side already on before she ignites the other side at 3:20 and I think that is actually really well made reveal of light saber. It does show that she wields double-bladed lightsaber, but it doesn't really make big deal out of it making it main thing even when it is in the middle of the screen. It is almost teasing viewer first that you see her wielding lightsaber with quite long hilt and then it pans to hilt when she ignites the other side. It also reminds me how in Episode one we see Darth Maul wielding double-ended lightsaber first time in Star Wars, but in first time we see his lightsaber on he only uses one side and gives some viewers this nice tease that his saber is "Unique" from what we have seen before.

    In this case, the Rule of Two actually hasn’t properly been established I believe. Darth Bane instituted the rule in an effort to prevent infighting as the sith used to operate like they do in this video and often fought with each other in selfish pursuit of power and/or knowledge. Darth Malgus is a very powerful Sith Lord from, as the titling suggests, the Old Republic Era. The rule is established between this time period and the events of Episode I.

  • @Drakefance5
    @Drakefance5 7 месяцев назад +1

    So the Rule of Two comes into play after the collapse of the Old Republic, at that point in time the sith was rendered nearly extinct so it was implemented to let the image of the sith die while they plotted in secret.

    This is set hundreds or thousands of years before Star Wars Episode 1 so The Sith Rule of Two would not Exist yet. Darth Bane created The Rule of Two, in response to what he viewed as inevitable, self-destructive infighting within the Sith Order. There was infighting between members of the Sith Order each one wanting more and more power and control over the Sith, they were technically exterminating the Order themselves from the inside, instead of focusing on fighting the Jedi

    What Satele did blocking the lightsaber was use a very rare force power called tutaminis. Its basically force absorption. You see the same thing in Empire Strikes Back when Han shoots Vader in Cloud City. Satele, Vader, Yoda and Luke all used that force power. As well as Coran Horn in the Expanded Universe now Legends.
    The giant force push that Satele did after was releasing all the engery she was absorbing from the lightsaber. Had she held it long enough she could have drained Malgus's lightsaber and killed its power source.

    The game was a (story-driven) MMO like World of Warcraft, and each side had more or less 4 mirrored classes you could play as which the main characters in the trailers reflect.
    Every class had two subclasses to choose from, one was always a damage dealing subclass, the other was either tanking damage or healing depending on your class.
    The Republic had:
    Smuggler, Scoundrel/Gunslinger (Healer)
    Trooper, Commando/Vanguard (Tank)
    Jedi Knight, Sentinel/Guardian (Focused on Lightsabers, Tank)
    Jedi Consular, Sage/Shadow (Focused on Force powers, Healer)
    And on the Imperial side:
    Imperial Agent, Operative/Sniper (Healer)
    Bounty Hunter, Powertech/Mercenary (Tank)
    Sith Warrior, Juggernaught/Marauder (Focused on Lightsabers, Tank)
    Sith Inquisitor, Assassin/Sorcerer (Focused on Force powers, Healer)

    25:47 The Rule of Two was made long after this cinematic takes place. It was when the Sith were thought to have gone extinct because theybwent from an empire to only Two people. Remember in the “Return” Cinematic Malgus Kills his master when his master is weakened in order to rise up in the empire. Well Later on a Sith named Darth Bane realizes the Sith will never get anywhere because you have 1000s of guys all fighting eachother and theyre expected to also fight the Jedi who are united. So the Rule of 2 was established to prevent massive infighting After The Old Republic takes place. Instead of A hundred people killing eachother and building their own armies of apprentices to kill political rivals, or sith rivals you have a Master who looks for someone to surpass and take his place if they are stronger. And an Apprentice who is trying to learn everything they can and ultimately betray their master to take their place and prove their strength.

    The 'good guys' are the Republic, the Old Republic of the game's name, and yes their colours are white and orange, matching the soldiers' armour.
    There's a metanarrative too - we've seen the Sith Empire come in full force in Return, sweeping away all in their path, and in this video we see them begin to stumble - the victory is hard won, but it *is* a victory.

    18:30 I think the thing they were going for keeping the camera in tight like that was so that you didn't see the Republic trooper coming from the Sith's perspective, so that we get the sense that the Sith aren't just all powerful wizards. That with a good tactic, they could be killed by regular Republic soldiers.
    Think like the opposite of the Darth Vader hallway scene from Rogue One.
    I'd say that goes for why they used pretty much all the tight close shots. They wanted you to feel like you were a soldier right in the middle of it and that you could be taken by surprise at any moment. Or at least that's how I saw it.
    Also, I wonder if I'm the only one who thinks it's kind of funny that I as a weirdly visually disabled person would be so interested in what is primarily a visual medium??
    This event happened 2500 years before the events of the original Star Wars movie (A New Hope). Darth Bane (who invented the Rule of 2 won't be for another 1500 years. At this point there were thousands of Sith and Jedi.

    You mentioned something particularly interesting, namely, the so-called "blink shot"
    The reason you didn’t see Malgus blink his eyes until the last second is because blinking is often regarded as a sign of empathy, proving deep down, you are human, you have emotions, and that you care.
    Malgus is a Sith. It is rare, albeit not completely unheard of, to meet a Sith who has any sort of empathy, emotion, compassion, or respect for anyone but themselves.
    So the blink shot did an amazing job depicting just how spiteful Malgus really was, but at the same time he had some level of respect and admiration towards Havoc Squad, at least in terms of skill.

    • @kaizammit
      @kaizammit  7 месяцев назад

      It shows the intensity of him as a character and never take your eye of the prize in this case, the enemy. In Scott Pilgrim Vs the World, Director Edgar Wright deliberately made actors hold their blinks to ramp up the intensity. Little things like that go a long way in films. Very good.
      Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoyed the video. KZ

    Playing a Vanguard Trooper in the original release of Star Wars: The Old Republic was one of my favorite MMO experiences of all time. It felt like they hit all the right notes with the overall theme of the class campaign (well, outside of the last chapter, but that was pretty crap for most classes, unfortunately), with how utilitarian and "uncool" the Trooper's starship was, with *most* story companions... But above everything else, there's something magical about playing a non-Force user badass in a world of Force users. I'll never forget the first time I smashed a lightsaber user in the face with the stock of my rifle. Can't top that :D.

  • @Revan_Reborn
    @Revan_Reborn 7 месяцев назад

    Satele blocked Malgus' lightsaber using the force using a technique called Tutaminis, which is used for energy absorption. Yoda used the same technique against both Count Dooku and Sidious in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith to block and attempt to nullify their Force Lightning. However, Satele's use of the technique to essentially catch a lightsaber is the technique taken to the nth degree. IIRC only 4 known individuals were capable of using it this way in both Canon and Extended Universe, two of them being literal Force Gods.

    I am loving the Star Wars and Blizzard cinematic breakdowns. Such thought and detail you put into it, explaining all the technical aspects that go into making these movies. It is so fascinating that you are able to explain the reasoning so perfectly as to why I love these cinematics (that I was oblivious to when watching them). I like reaction videos, but your breakdowns are on another level.
    As an aside to the rule of two thing, others have already said the Old Republic was well before the Rule of Two became a thing. Darth Bane realised the Sith kept on losing because many weaker Sith could gang up on more powerful Sith, making them overall weaker in the long run. So he basically arranged to eliminate every Sith but himself, then took a young apprentice to begin the Rule of Two era.

    25:26 - This precedes the Rule of Two by a very, very long time. This is the time of the return of the Sith Empire, that once controlled Korriban (as seen in Return).
    * Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) is around 3956 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin, which is the end of the original Star Wars - Episode IV: A New Hope)
    * The Old Republic MMO is 300ish years after that, so around 3650 BBY
    * For most of the time from that era until around 1030 BBY the Sith and the Jedi were around equal numbers with ups and downs and power swings, but always the Sith were hampered by their infighting and the Jedi just had to be patient and act when they Sith were fighting each other.
    * Finally as a huge confluence of events came together and the Jedi just about erased the Sith, Darth Bane decreed the Rule of Two as a way to stay strong and stay alive. There should be one to hold the power, and one to covet it. All of the dark side energy concentrated down to its purest quintessence. The only way for the Apprentice to take control was to kill their own Master. (This had happened a lot in the Old way of doing things, this as just a bit more formalized now.)

    These cinematics take place long before the rule of two was implemented so there's thousands of Sith just like there are Jedi.
    The woman from this cinematic and the previous one is Satele Shan, who after these first 3 cinematics would become the Jedi Grand Master, so she was essentially the Yoda of her time.
    She and the trooper from again this and the previous cinematic, Jace Malcom, would go on to have an affair after this battle, lasting 6 months and resulting in a secret child.
    She's a part a long line of Jedi that were essentially the Skywalkers of the Old Republic. She is the descendant of legendary Jedi Knights Revan and Bastila Shan, protagonists of Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic, Revan being the Anakin type figure of the Old Republic, having gone from Jedi to Dark Lord, back to Jedi.
    The reason you won't see Satele in the next cinematic is because she was a part of a delegation sent to Alderaan, the planet seen here, to attend peace talks to end this war in which the Sith would use as a distraction to launch a major attack

      @@kaizammit I don't really remember if it was told in the game or if I read as a fan fic or fun fact somewhere... It has been some years since I last played, but even if it's not official, it makes sense to me. The grenade is the same that is used at 15:40, and Jace was going for the kill. However, if you pay attention, the explosion is white like if it was a stun grenade, but it clearly wasn't since it damaged both Malgus and him. So what I remember reading is that Satele basically supressed the explosion with the force, because (Spoilers?) her and Jace are lovers (of course, in secrecy, because the Jedi don't allow it), and she didn't want to lose him.
