    Another layer to how hard this hit a lot of the Overwatch players was due to what they knew of Reinhardt going into the cinematic; which came out years after the game's release. Reinhardt had always been this meme of a tank where a lot of new players actually played him like the cocky young version where they would use the charge ability and swing their hammer around while leaving their teammates unprotected. After this cinematic came out, there was actually a NOTICEABLE increase in Reinhardt players who started playing like the cinematic suggested; thus showing that the best version of Reinhardt was the one who protected his team. Also, the cinematic was filled with references to a number of Reinhardt's in-game voice lines; most famously being "I am your shield." So, as a Reinhardt main, this cinematic hit us on a whole other level that really hammered home the identity of this tank and the proper way to play him.

      Wow, interesting read. Clearly this cinematic left its mark on the audience. I don't even play the game and I know after watching this, I would want to be a shield. KZ

      The only downside to it is that players embraced it TOO hard. Rein players started being TOO passive and teammates started demanding Rein players almost exclusively shield. Knowing when to do both is key to getting good with him; too much to either side and you're more a weakness than a strength!

      There are so many ways to take Reinhart being given that coin:
      The passing of a mantle to a worthy successor, repaying a debt, a form of exile, and more.
      And on some level, they're all true at the same time.

    My favorite thing about the cinematic is how non-chalantly Reinhard says their salute in the beginning "Live with honor, die with glory" almost as if not understanding their true meaning. and then at the end when he says it again he really understands what it means.

    If my memory of the Overwatch lore is accurate. The Crusaders are known to say that their suits are also their tombs. They don't re-use the power armor if a Crusader dies in the field in their armor. Hence why he's still on that throne, all those years later. Also if I'm not mistaken, The Last Bastion takes place in the forests of Germany, implying Bastion should have been one of those Bastions assaulting that town or another city.

      The body is still there because the city of Eichenwalde (the one in the cinematic) was ultimately overrun by Omnics and abandoned by humans, and they couldn't get to him. After the Omnic Crisis was over, the city still remained abandoned - Colonel Baldrich and the Crusaders as a while are just a forgotten relic whose sacrifices are only remembered by a few. In the comic, Reinhardt arrives at Eichenwalde after all these years to retreieve his mentor's armor (and presumably his body) with Brigitte. The cinematic picks up from there.

  • @_Valravn
    @_Valravn Год назад +231

    One thing I love about this cinematic is how you can infer that Reinhardt is quite literally walking the same path in the present that he did in the past.
    He and Brigitte, the woman scolding him in the beginning, start in the bar and end up at Balderich’s throne just like in the flashback. This whole time, you can imagine Reinhardt telling her the story we’re seeing as they walk through the town. It’s a long winded way of explaining why he feels he has to answer the call. The whole flashback is used to explain it but it’s summed up in Reinhardt’s last line.
    “I have been called. I must answer. Always.”

      Yeah considering all the detritus from this very fight is on the map (the robots his friend fights single handedly at the door, his body in the armor on the throne), apparently they never actually restored the city. So she would be seeing every blown out building and wrecked robot as he relives the fight, blow by blow.

    • @EricSwordswinger
      @EricSwordswinger Год назад +16

      It goes even deeper than that, Reinhardt's line mirrors Balderich's from the beginning of the cinematic when Rein flips the coin back. Therefore we infer that Rein is not answering the call for himself or even necessarily out of his own sense of duty, he is answering the call on behalf of the man who should have been there to answer if Rein's mistake had not cost him his life.

  • @Moehre040
    @Moehre040 Год назад +168

    I also love how that cockiness that young Rein displays here is not completely gone in game. He is still cocky and loves a good brawl, but he has also learned his lesson, because his most defining line is "I will be your shield", whereas young Rein completely abandoned his comrades to get stuck in.

    @hugomendoza5665 Год назад +89

    I don't know if this is an official explanation or just someone's headcanon, but I heard once that the reason Balderich wasn't moved is because it's a tradition for the Crusaders to leave their body if they were killed in the line of duty. The purpose is to memorialize their final sacrifice, as it is generally the case that Crusaders expect not to die of old age, but while in action. And it's the greatest honor to give your life for others, hence, the leaving of the body. I love the look of confidence on Balderich's face when he watches Reinhardt leave. He knows that Rein has learned his lesson and will go on to save more lives, and he is resigned to his death, having felt that he had done everything that was necessary to fulfill his duty. His final stand is one of the best of any cinematic or screen.

    Love how that coin was an actual physical part of the collectors edition of the original game. (still sitting on my desk)
    Btw, if you haven't noticed: the forrest surrounding that village is the one we saw Bastion in (at the end of his movie you can see the castle in the back) somewhere close to Stuttgart (Germany)
    which was the big city Bastion was moving towards and the place Reinhard and his comrades were supposed to defend while being stationed at Balderichs home (it's his castle...)
    Also: if "The Last Bastion" and THAT was not enough for you to need the paper tissues then try "Rise and Shine" about the backstory of the character Mei (and her little robot Snowball).

    one of if not the best part of this cinematic is the story it tells of the town they are in (it being a playable map). The holes in walls and destroyed robots in game finally given context after months of playing on the map, a great example is the hole Rienhardt charges out of at the end to protect his team being a flanking route in game. Such brilliant attention to detail that hits all the harder as you retrace his steps in game as he does in the cinematic, fighting the enemy team in a battle so similar to this one.

  • @theblackunicorn261
    @theblackunicorn261 8 месяцев назад +3

    I also wanna point out something I rarely see people talking about, the difference in meaning both times "Live with honour, die with glory" is said.
    The first time, Balderich says "Live with honour", seeing how he's Reinhardt's mentor, and the team leader. He lives by that line. In contrast, Reinhardt says "Die with glory", showing how he would prefer going down swinging.
    However, the second time, the roles are reversed. Balderich says "Reinhardt. Live with honour." He says the line to Reinhardt directly, telling him to live by that, and to protect his team. Reinhardt, to that, says "Die with glory, old friend.", basically accepting Balderich's sacrifice, and telling him to take as many down with him as he can.

    I’m quite late to the game here, but something that is really smart about this cinematic is that Blizzard was making a commentary on the state of the game.
    Reinheart was shown as being cocky and spearheaded, getting all the glory for himself, which reflected a lot of Reinheart players at the time who played the hero in the same way- rushing into battle and not protecting their team. Blizzard made this cinematic as a character piece, but to also reinforce Reinheart’s play style at the same time and show players the purpose of Reinheart’s role on the team. The interconnectivity of the game world and cinematics is something they did really well.

  • @goglux2
    @goglux2 Год назад

    The crazy part for me is that the whole thing can be seen also as the Hammer and shield are an allegory of for Honor (shield) And Glory (hammer). Reinhart is all about the Glory (hammer) at the start and eventually gets what Balderich has been trying to teach him. And thus he starts using his shield (honor). It's a very subtle thing, but it works so well to explain the character.
    It made my favorite quote from the character in-game even better "Don't worry my friend, I will be your shield!"

    The soldiers Reinhart rescues are BAMF as well. A few get cut down, the one with the rocket launcher drops it to grab a wounded man who draws his side arm (pistol) to fire one handed. It happens in just a few seconds. The rocket launcher was probably the best chance at killing the enemy, but the soldier decides to throw away a better chance of survival to try and save his comrade.

    Really good analysis as always ! It's still a pleasure to watch this cinematic in particular, it's probably the most complete Blizzard ever made for Overwatch
    Now the only problem with this cinematic is the localisation of the action/characters in space, it doesn't make any sense when you pay attention and it's even worse when you know the actual map (since it's in the game), it feel like they're doing back and forth, like if they were teleported behind the enemy, then in front of them, then behind again, it's really confusing

Because if you play the game rehinard is part of Overwatch, but inmediatly we saw he was not called for it, and how u expresed perfectly, this coin fly and present a new character who is the one who was called. And this is odd for players, it's a change of perspective because in this moment u dont understand at all. Who is he, and why is called and not Rehinard.
