Lumix S5 or Lumix GH5 in 2021? Should you get the S5 instead of the GH5 in 2021?

- Should you get the Lumix S5 instead of the Lumix GH5 in 2021? The S5 and the GH5 are both great cinematic cameras but are there just a few things that push the S5 over the GH5 in 2021? I've been using the GH5 for several years now and can say that it's been one of the greatest cameras on the market since it came out. But after using the S5 for a bit, I can say that I'm really impressed with it.
Check out the Lumix S5 here.

Lens variety, lens price, lens weight, body price/quality ratio, 6K and 8K in upcoming MFT sensors are some extra reasons to stick with MFT
Clients are still happy with 1080 =/
What about DR, object separation, noise level?
PL 10-25 is the only lens that shines on m4/3 and great for run n gun and every kind of commercial work. But it’s FF size and price.
That’s if they ever actually drop the GH6. I’ve been waiting patiently but I’m getting tired of waiting
Hi caleb just want to thank you for all your work! thank to make us better each video but now the padawan change side, i bought the sony a7s3.... it's just amazing coming from Gh5. you teach me a lot about that camera ! i will continue to follow you :) keep going becaéuse you help people and share love! take care :) PEACE as always cheer from france :)
Great bro thanks 🔥🔥
Thanx for the vid bro I have G9 and very happy with the 2.4 update. I was thinking about an upgrade but I think I'll wait and see what the GH6 brings us :).
Thank you for sharing 🙏
Adapt to EF, ALWAYS!
You make great videos man. Very helpful and relevant to what I do. I will keep watching
can you use Gh5 lens on an S5?
i have the Gh5 but recently got a nikon Z5. sometimes i forgot using panasonic
Of course, the GH5M2 is also a possibility, which fixes some of the issues you mentioned regarding the original GH5. 4K/60 is now 422 10-bit, and VLOG-L is pre-installed. Focusing is supposed to be better than the original GH5 as well. I haven't seen any direct comparisons between the GH5 4K/60 and the S5 4K/60 showing the actual image quality differences. As near as I can tell, the crop on the S5 means it's almost shooting pixel-for-pixel, which tends to be a lower quality than the ample oversampling of the GH5. Of course, maybe the larger surface area of the sensor may compensate, but again, I haven't seen any direct comparisons between them.
I consider www.slashcam.de/4K-Kamera-Vergleich.html as a very reliable source with excellent tests. They haven't got the results for the GH5M2 yet, but I'm pretty certain these will come. You can do a comparison between GH5 (having the same resolution as the GH5M2) and S5 and indeed the image from the S5 in 4k60p is a bit softer.
Definitely worth taking the GH5ii into consideration. If you're looking at a new camera, not much reason to go with the original GH5 at this point except to save $300. Although I'm pretty sure the internal 4K 60 is 4:2:0 just like the S5
@@MichaelSchagen Actually a G9 is more comparable…

@@PhillipRPeck Yes, you're right about the 420 at 60fps. I keep getting that one wrong. It is 10-bit, though.
I just went for the Panasonic BGH1 myself. Smashes the hell out of the S5, GH5 (ii included) and so on.
I am doing some research myself and sofar reached the following conclusions:
Are you often shooting fast action, fast camera movement => MFT (or S5 in aps-c mode) due to rolling shutter.
Are you shooting mostly long focal lengths (concerts, wildlife) => MFT (or S5 in HD with ex. tele conv. function if you don't want to carry a long FF lens).
Are you shooting a lot of low light => S5. Low light performance is a function of lens not sensor size. You either go full frame and buy fast (native) lenses with it or you go MFT and buy fast MFT glass which is at least as expensive and big and heavy to get identical performance or you adapt FF lenses which could actually be cheaper but is a bit of a clutch due to adapters. Lens line-up for L mounts needs some additional lenses though.
Are you shooting lots of wide dynamic range scenes (landscapes, concerts) => S5. It has better dynamic range, no real workarounds for that on MFT.
If you end up with a system and you incidentally want it to do something for which it is not ideal, then there are often ways to get acceptable results anyway (like switching the S5 to APS-C mode to reduce rolling shutter). I also suspect that the next generation of S camera's will have faster sensors, making the rolling shutter a non-issue by then.
No client has ever complained that a video has poor dynamic range.
What about GH5S for video? Thanks
They should make a firmware update for the audio because even with a Shotgun Microphone it's still peaks badly
Awesome stuff man! Getting closer to being done with my S5 "review" myself... still love watching your findings :)
You didn't mention that 6k needs an external recorder.
I have a GH5 with all the bells and whistles. It has been a workhorse, but I find myself doing more and more hybrid projects and when it comes to stills FF is a choice I really like. I have a Canon 5D M3 which I use for stills, but having a S5 may solve my problem. On top of that I can reuse the XLR1 adapter with the S5. The GH5 is a killer in the video dept, never fails.
I have a GH5 for video only. And a used Sony A7R mk1 36mp for my landscape and portraits style stills. This combo works well for me.
Gh5 falls short in low light, it's not a "mini s5/s1" like some believe at all
@@fredriksvard2603 what lenses and setting do you use? I use EF f/2.8 lenses with a speedbooster and never had issues in low lights. That said, I am not a pro so perhaps our needs diverge a bit.
@@jd5787 i've had the 15mm and 42.5mm ones, 1,7, its a very good camera system, just saying there's another level of low light performance with full frame cameras :) not a pro either at all..
Gh6 seems to have upped mft low light performance though
@@fredriksvard2603 I have a F1.7 leica (10-25mm). I love it but it doesn't see enough action vs its FF brothers that I adapted ;)
Do you think the S5 is better to start with than the GH5?
Good little comparison and at the very least will get people thinking! I plan on making a very similar video to this in the near future and our points definitely have a fair bit of overlap
In my opinion the Panasonic S5 is Panasonic's full frame version of Panasonic's mid level 8 bit only camera's, and it's the answer to Canon's
Canon 90D, Canon RP, Nikon's Nikon Z5, And Fuji XT4.
And camera isn’t that bad itself!
Very cheap FF with 10 bit colors;)
Dude, most if not all modes in S5 is *APS-C* for video, and FF is most only in HDMI out recording. So "Full Frame" is not that much advantage.
Doesnt matter, it's still got the low light advantage, and dof
@@fredriksvard2603Most top filmmakers and cinematographers, Roger Deakins for example, never obliterate the background into bokeh, that's something that has been popularised by amateurs and small time indie filmmakers. Roger Deakins referred to it as "lazy filmmaking" because it's usually used to hide shortcomings in the location, the lighting or a shortcoming of the cinematographer. Just repeating what I read.
The Lumix S5 seems more like a consideration for 2022 or 2023, based on the lens availability. The GH5II seems more like a camera for 2021 and 2022, because its is basically an S5 with a 4/3 sensor, and more robust video features. Early tests also seem to imply that the low light capabilities of the GH5II are more in line with Sony a6000-a6500…
