I’m originally a G9 and G85 user. Debated for a long time between GH5s, GH6, or S5. To improve on the G9 video specs I needed better low light with still a little IBIS. I picked up a new S5 for $1400 US and man does it deliver. Dual native ISO is no joke. Very usable noiseless video at 6400!? Easy decision. The S50mm lens is $347 right now and the 85mm not much more. No contest for me.

I always say this, but the S5 was basically the GH6 we were hoping for in my opinion especially with the full frame can’t go wrong. I don’t own an S5 I have a GH5S, GX85, & canon 80D but I can see why a lot of people love the S5 it lives up to the hype and will continue to.
If Lumix had put a full HDMI it would have been perfect. But GH6 is far better for this and codecs, plus IBIS is way better. Though the full frame of S5 is tempting.
Hey Ryan, I see you use the 12-60mm lens as your main lens now. Can you talk more about this and what are you "MAIN" uses for it? I have the Same Leica edition and have also collected some of the other lens you have in your Filmmaking Masterclass. Thanks man! Love your content and you are the reason I have the GH5!

Hey Ryan, can you do a video that compares the G9 to the GH6? I will eventually upgrade and was looking at the S5 but it has a recording limit which I would like to dodge.
thanks for sharing your thoughts.I like the color science on the S5 a little better (might be a taste thing), and the GH5II is calibrated to match it. The only thing that seems off is the Cinelike D II..it just doesn't look right.
Which lenses did you use for the IBIS comparison? Because the 20-60mm is not stabilized.
for a beginner who is interested in video and photography which Panasonic camera would you recommend?

Hi Ryan. I really appreciate your videos and reviews. That's why I want to ask you this question: I am creating my brand based on documentarys for RUclips and I am working with a GH4 and a meke 25mm f 2.0. On the way I realize I definitely need a good zoom lens to continue my work. So I could invest in a Lumix 12-35 2.8 but then I think that lens is not that great, so I am thinking in the Leica 10-25 which I think is the perfect zoom range for my work. But then I realized that the cost of that lense is almost the same than a Lumix S5 with the kit lens, that result being a similar zoom range. In one hand would be great to invest in this Leica so when I can afford a GH5 or even a GH6 would be a great combo. But in the other hand that S5 would also be great for it's characteristics and it's zoom great/cheap lense. So.... May I ask you for your opinion?

I have a gx 8...i love ...and a bmpcc4k...do you a patten ...glass...makes the choice 70% of the time if you got a lot you tend to stay in that kane...the next camera for me would be a gh6 for glass reason
Gh5's IBIS seems to be better only becuase it is MFT and the shake on the FF is more recognizable, but in general it's not better probably the same.
I wish you would've compared the S5 vs. the GH6 coming from a GH5.
How does the GH6 figure in this mix? After all, no glass needs to be changed for the GH6 :D
Gh6 is the KING of the kings of the kings. Of course I am biased, mine comes Wednesday, lol. Honestly, it looks like a BEAST. Even in photography, from the high res mode handheld with barely any artifacts runs circles around even the likes of Canon R5 or Sony A1 in sharpness or detail
Thats where I came out on this decision, i really really want better low light and better photography... I just can't give up the IBIS when I'm shooting handheld. I keep trying to figure out a way to make it work... but thats the deal breaker. The S1 I think has better IBIS than the S5, wonder if thats worth it (its' much bigger, and doesn't have dual SD cards which annoys me)
Good point. I have a GH5 and a Nikon Z6 (full frame). Shooting 4K video with GH5 hand held, it comes out beautiful. With the Z6, you need to use something to stabilize it. I might sell the Z6 and buy another GH5 as my back up.

Yep. I use my gh5 for 100% video and another camera for pictures specific.
Here’s a few things to point out. The S5 has "FULL" V-Log, while you can only get V-Log L (Light, clipping at 80 IRE) on the GH5. Although, the S5 have a 30min recording limit on some of the higher quality codecs, while the GH5 has no recording limit whatsoever (for those who care). As for photos, the S5 does true 14 bit RAW, while the GH5 does 12+2 bit RAW.
I see the S5 more as the small more affordable version of the S1H. It's not as good if you need long shots over more than 30min but it's great for stills and normal video up to 30p.
But for an owner of the GH5 it is a system change that need a whole new set of lenses.
The GH5-II has a lot of improvements.
But the GH6 is actually the new GH5. It has all the features for long shootings, much improved IBIS, AF and you can do 4k60p and even 4k120p in 10bit. There are lots of improved usability features making life much easier. It is a mistake to just look at the specs and some theoretical measurements. The real fun starts when you work with the camera and find all those little goodies then are now helping to get things done.
As a previous gh5 shooter, the S5 has a way better image. The depth from a full frame sensor as well as increased dynamic range makes it worth it even if ibis of gh5 is better

S5 is not 2000 anymore, you can find it from as low as 1499 to 1699 on most reputable sites. The problem are the lenses. There are too few, too expensive, too heavy
But the competing now is between the S5 and the GH6 , Gh5 is history. Eventually Gh5 mk2 would be a competitor. I mean Gh5 is still great, but it's like a Canon 5dmark 4 or Sony A7r2 now.
I bought an A7RII last year! For photography it is still a killer deal! I traded my GH4 for it and it is bonkers! S5 is a beast! I bought it with the 20-60mm kit lens which is awesome too! I still primarily use my GH5, sigma 18-35, and speedboster for now, but the S5 surpasses the GH5 in video and of course photo!
The primes are small and not that expensive. There's the sigma 100-400, sigma art 85/105/135, nisi 15mm, pana 70-200 and 70-300. The 24-105 is great too. Full frame glass from canon and sony isn't exactly cheap either. I think l mount got a bad rep because of the bulky expensive 70-200 2.8. But the "pro" lenses don't trade for their msrp:s, and now there are a bunch of primes as mentioned. Video af remains a problem, and perhaps cropped 4k 60. I kinda think images are soft with a strange green cast, but i can work around it.
(0:48) No, the Gh5II is… Comes with V-Log L, better low-light, sharpness, IBIS, and HDMI (full size). Both the S5 and the GH5II currently the same price $1497, if one already has a set of impressive glass for µ4/3, it is an obvious choice with less hassle. Plus the lens selection is significantly better…
Would love to see Ryan rock the GH5II in his very capable hands…

I have both the GH5ii and S5. The low light on the GH5ii still sucks and the S5 is waaaay better in that regard. I hate the mini hdmi bullshit on the S5 but it’s not the end of the world. I absolutely love the image and the lenses for my S5. The GH5 is still amazing for outdoor stuff with the 35-100 since you’ll never get a 70-200 full frame in that size.

With the GH5, you get Fantastic professional Portraits, like corporate headshots, in a controlled setting using good lights, I use Orlit strobes. Beyond that, the GH5 becomes below average.
@Sebastian Biddle the point of my comment is that the GH5 is in fact versatile in that it produces professional still images and its pretty obvious that it is a great run and gun video camera. I know b/c I own it, along with several other cameras. I think you misunderstood.
@Sebastian Biddle yes, where cameras are today, the GH5 is certainly below average for stills...and even video in terms of image quality. Most of what you can achieve in a business model using a GH5 can be matched or exceeded very easily...it can get the job done but there are better options that are competitively priced.

No its not. The GH5 is a micro four thirds the S5 is full frame. Full frame will always be better in low light or auto focus then micro four thirds.

I have the S5 and the IBIS in my opinion is shit. You can't tell that is even on. I was disappointed. I was expecting GH5-level performance but it's no better than average lens stabilization on an average lens. I mean you wouldn't miss it if it were turned off. And even when you have the LOCK feature or the Software based stabilization, all of these modes are VERY underwhelming. You will be disappointed. This was one of the reasons I bought the camera and it was so hard to see if it was even turned on or not I actually contacted Panasonic thinking it was broken and sent them some sample footage. They said it was working and nothing was wrong with the camera.
The S5 IBIS is really not shit. It is not as good as the GH5 when you walk with the camera, otherwise it's great. Maybe you got a bad sample. I can tell you the IBIS of Sony camera is really bad though.
You can watch my last video I only used IBIS on the S5 with some Panasonic lenses and the stabilization is really good.
I don't think you can get the GH5 kind of IBIS on a full-frame. I have the Nikon Z6 and GH5 and like you said, big difference in stabilized video.
