    One of the main reasons why me and many others love the GH5 and GH5S is because the lenses are so much less then full frame and more compact. I hope they carry on making M43 as I love the format

      totally agree :) just got S5 and had gh5 for years and a bit confused :) the codecs maybe better 4.2.2 on S5 but it has a lower bitrate on S5. Then 4k 60p its croped so that means you could not use FF and for wide shots you need super wide lens. Lenses are limited on L mount (wide collection on old lenes like m42, but no native affordable prime lenses) I have plenty 1.4 / 1.8 lenses on M43 and size its just more than half from FF L mount lenses. Quality of the image I would not say its a big step up. From GH5 and right lens you could get decent image. Button layout on s5 looks like panasonic G80 entry level comparing to GH5 whit much more extra buttons and better dieals. Dials I prepefer more on GH5. Also the menu on S5 is too small for my eye and I got 20/20 vision so prefer on GH5. Slow motion on S5 its on different dial mode S&Q and only records in MP4 WTF??? So whanted to move to FF but now now Im confused.... S1 & S1H not for me too heavy will consider to move to iPhone 13 pro max instead of S5 :)

      @Zack Darce It´s a bit stressful situation. (we have an "old" Canon C2000), old in the sense it only records full HD, and has no IBIS, focus is bad ... it has all kinds of small issues... so I would like to get some next gen, still, new cameras are so expensive that my heart stops.
      New stuff is coming out, but prices are very high. The GH5 seems to have many good things, the thing I am a little unsure of is the autofocus (in those cases you need it). Another smaller issue is filming in dark... where SONY shines (but in some test, the Sony IBIS was jerky), and the new a7s III will be around 4.400€ - GOD OF MERCY, I get a car or MC for that price. Then is the question if GH6 will come out, when and at what price?

      Agreed. I honestly think it would make more sense to fuse the S version with the GH line for the GH6.
      It probably doesn't need the fancy larger m43 sensor of the GH6, but a 10-12mp sensor that's stabilized would be awesome.
      And the G9/upcoming G10 can just retain the hybrid function.
      Panasonic needs to develop their own sensors though. It looks like they're at the mercy of Sony who doesn't want to sell them PDAF enabled sensors.

    Hey Carl. I upgraded from the GH5 to the S5 and i cannot be happier. The still image quality is far superior and so is the AF compared to the gh5. I have got around the micro hdmi issue with a cage and micro to full hdmi adapter ensuring minimal disturbance of the micro port itself. Also the full Vlog is considerably better to use than the VlogL. I loved using the GH5 but the small sensor and poor low light capability was always an issue. Not with the full frame sensor and dual native ISO this camera is now a worthy A cam to my bmpcc4k. In addition, given that I previously owned a Ninja v with my gh5 it's perfect as I now will be recording 4k prores HQ on both the S5 and bmpcc4k as I don't at present want to use up all my drive space with 5.9 k prores raw. All in all I was in no way interested in waiting for the GH6 rumoured to be listed at about £2500, for the price it's hard to beat the S5. . Sort for the long post

    I use the GH5 primarily for documentary style work, and if you go native, there is nothing quite like it. It works, through snow, rain and heat without a single hitch. And paired with lenses like the Olympus 12 mm f2, 45 mm f1.8, Pana Leica 25 f1.4 etc you have a solid performer in all situations (except full fledged night-time, but for that nothing except A7S line holds up)... My camera bag on the road weighs under 2 kg with camera, 4 lenses, 3-4 batteries etc and even with a gimbal, stays under 3 kg.
    That said, I might look at Panasonic S5 as my A-Cam (and stay with GH5 as B-Cam), since paired with Prores RAW it seems to be the most promising stable cinema-quality camera in the range... Plus (fingers crossed) I am hoping for some solid Panasonic firmware updates for S5 in the coming year or two.
    ps. This is a fairly long post, but wanted to thank you. Superb content, always!

    Sorry for being months late to the party, however, I really don’t see how any of the examples makes the GH5 footage unusable. For pixel peepers, sure they are a finicky bunch. But realistically, anyone using the GH5 in a perceived professional capacity is not going to use kit lenses.
    Trust me when I say, no one is looking at footage on RUclips decrying about the image quality. Most content is going to be viewed over the internet. 75% of it will be consumed on a device that can barely handle 4K well. Besides a wedding couple, and maybe the parents, no one is downloading that video...
    Most people that create content need to be more realistic as to how their footage is being consumed and longevity of its viewing potential.1% might be Citizen Kane, 3% maybe Clerks, none of it will be Star Wars...
    Just saying...

Sure, right now it is not that important, but lets see in 5-10 years.

  • @artistjoh
    @artistjoh 3 года назад +12

    There is an upgrade path from the GH5, and that is the GH5S. The S5 has the problem of limited lens choices. MFT has more lens choices that any other system. Eventually the L-mount will catch up, but for now the most creative options are found in MFT. There is also the issue that full frame lenses are bigger and heavier. One of the joys of MFT is that it is possible to carry an incredible kit into very out of the way places. I think the best thing Sony ever did was put a 12Mp sensor in a video centric camera, and the best thing Panasonic did was put a 10Mp sensor into a GH camera. As a result I will happily stay with MFT and let others deal with heavy bags of equipment, and keep the Sony for the full frame stuff when that is appropriate.

    • @dominic-ryan
      @dominic-ryan 3 года назад +1

      This is me exactly as well, I really don't like the S5 being looked at as an upgrade to the GH5 as it is no more an upgrade than moving to the E-Mount for the A7S III or RF mount for the R5. It is the video capabilities of a camera body that is driving my interest in upgrading. The S5 is a decent enough camera it seems, but in no way would it be convincing me to buy into a lens system with limited choice that is also predominantly very expensive.

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 3 года назад +1

      Dominic Ryan I am sure the S5 is a great camera for those with L-mount lenses, but an upgrade to the GH5 it is not. The GH5S and the upcoming GH6 range are far more interesting potential upgrades.

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 3 года назад +1

      ojoaoefixe Why continue making MFT? Because there is a need for it. This is exactly like back in film days. Certain projects, mostly artistic creations such as feature films were shot on 35mm (and 35mm movie meant APSC format. However, 35mm had too shallow a depth of field for other kinds of motion picture. This included almost all documentary and interview footage, and that would always be shot on 16mm (which was around the size of 1 inch sensors. Where greater depth of field was required, 8mm was used, although that format was also used for family type footage. You don’t seem to understand that at a professional level there is often a need for a smaller sensor, and while 1 inch is a great format, MFT is a step up in quality while still maintaining a useful depth of field. Unfortunately a lot of the RUclips conversation is dominated by well meaning amateurs who have convinced themselves that full frame is somehow “better”. That is sometimes true, but not always. Sometimes MFT or 1 inch is “better”. This is why a studio like mine has cameras with a wide range of sensor sizes from 1/2.5 to full frame. Camera sales figures reveal that there are a lot more smaller sensor cameras sold than larger sensors. You should perhaps check out professional video equipment. APSC Super 35 exists, as well as MFT, but the majority of professional broadcast cameras have sensors 1 inch or less.

      @@joaocorreiamedia What did @artistjoh say exactly that was crap? My take away was they were just saying that different needs are best served by different cameras. I completely agree with this.
      My main use is landscape & nature videography, this can involve hiking for hours. The lens size and weight discrepancy you seem to be palming off as no big deal is in fact a very big deal for this. The high end M43 telephoto options are a fraction of the size, weight and cost of FF options.
      I have have FF cameras too, in fact most of my camera bodies are Sony FF. They are definitely what I reach for any time low light is a factor. For low light applications the FF advantage is night and day. However I have yet to reach for them for thin DOF as the DOF from M43 is perfectly suitable for all useful scenarios I've encountered to date. People seem to forget that the GH5s is a 1.8x crop factor. Put a Metabones 0.64 speedbooster in front of that and you have FF equivalent crop of just 1.15. I mean you could put one of the f/1.2 EF lenses on there for a maximum effective aperture of f/0.77 or something, I just can't think of an application where that sort of razor thin focal plane would be useful for video (I expect it exists though).

    • @artistjoh
      @artistjoh 3 года назад

      Dominic Ryan I suspect that ojo whatever has never used a GH5s for work. He appears to buy certain cameras due to low price rather than practical needs. He apparently can’t imagine, for example, needing to use a wide open aperture due to light conditions yet maintain as deep a depth of focus as possible. And if he doesn’t personally experience that need, then anything we might require is just crap. I tried to enlighten him on the bigger world beyond his personal experience, but he meets that with rudeness so I wouldn’t give him the time of day.

    The biggest issue with this type of upgrade is that a new set of lenses is also required. What seems strange is that Panasonic is adding features to this that aren't in the S1. Features that seem to be firmware, not hardware. I get that an entry-level camera may not have the same level of heat management, and therefore must have time limits on certain modes. But I'm not sure why an entry level camera will get vectorscopes and RAW output when the higher-level camera doesn't.

      Yup, I'm an S1 owner that's not super happy about this at all. Especially since those features were left out to get us to consider the S1H. I really dont see why Panasinic can't add these features into the S1 at this point. Most notably, 10 bit 4:2:0 at 4K 60p, and shutter angle.

      @@nwpgunner I was one of those GH5 users expecting these features when I bought the S1. I wouldnt be so irritated by this if they dodnt price it cheaper than the S1. The G9 is the photo focused camera from their M43 systems, and it's cheaper tham the GH5. I dont even expect ALL the features from the S5, I'm not unreasonable. But come on, what is shutter angle really costing them to just add in? 10 bit 420 at 4K 60 actually makes 4K 60 useable with V-LOG. I don't expect anamorphic support, raw output, or anything else the S5 has. Hell, I couldn't care less about the S1 getting the S5 autofocus upgrade. Those two features would satisfy me as an S1 early adopter, and there's no reason they can't be added in now that they've cannibalized the S1 in the market. They were clearly left out to drive people to the S1H to get those features, but now the game has changed.

  • @Bubblegummonsters
    @Bubblegummonsters 3 года назад +2

    I'd say the image quality looks almost identical other than the SDOF of the S5.
    I keep thinking of 'upgrading' but I actually think the better option (and is what I'm planning) is to buy the 10mm Voigtlander lens and the DJI RS2 with it's 3D focus adapter. Using the Voigthlander will give a very similar DOF at 1.8 or even .95 and the 3D focus of the gimbal (which uses Lidar) will allow me to auto focus far better and quicker while still using the voighlander. So basically this set up (in theory) should eliminate the two main issue people have with the GH5.
    On another note, I wish the S5 supported 24 cinema frequency, something else the GH5 does.

      The only problem would be the 3D focus currently only works for centre point focus. But I think in a couple of years time, we should see one that has at least 9 or maybe even 45 point AF like DSLRs.

You can work around focus issues but you can't improve 8bit to 10bit, stabilisation, shutter angle over shutter speed, all-i recording, unlimited record time, smaller and greater lens options... the list goes on. The S5 looks like a great camera but there's still so much the GH5 can do that the S5, and other similarly priced cameras, can't do.

    Thank you for a very informative video.
    I myself used to be a Nikon user, had a D7100 with a 70-200 F2.8 lens. It wasn´t really good for video and I have always enjoyed doing both, so I sold all my gear and upgraded to the GH5 in 2017. I have been happy with it, but felt that in some ways it was a step back when taking photos, even with my 12-35 F2.8 II and 35-100 F2.8 V1 I just couldn't get the nice shallow DOF and bokeh that I got with my Nikon system. Video quality has always been fantastic though.
    As someone with limited budget and always on all trips and projects spending 50/50 on photos as well as videos I would like to switch to a "Holy Grail" sort of camera that excels with both. I am not convinced that the S5 is that camera. I think it is crystal clear as the next step for a videographer going from GH5, but I am now more inclined to at least dream of affording to switch to the Sony A7S III. When looking at RUclips reviews of that camera it seems to be perfect for both video and stills. But the price is, well for a happy amateur like me, paying some 5 500 USD for a camera with a kit-lens is not realistic. Maybe I stay with my GH5 and be happy with it for another decade or so?

      I am also this type of photographer/videographer with a 50/50 demand. Therefore I decided to go for the Lumix G9. For me the perfect decision. I think the genes of the S5 are closer to the G9 than to the GH5. Because I like the Panasonic system so much, in case of an upgrade I would stick to the S5 instead of choosing the much more expensive (but also capable) Sony A7SIII with its horrible user interface. Because I am absolutely satisfied with my two G9s I'm also not waiting impatiently for a MFT upgrade like a G9 MkII or a GH6.

I haven’t found any example footage which could convince me to upgrade from my G9. In this comparison I also prefer the footage out from the GH5. I really like it much more! But I prefer authentic colors and I see absolutely no benefit in DR if Standard profile (the only profile providing authentic colors) is set. fabian puello Nope Fabian. There is a place for full frame, but there is also a need for a crop sensor camera as well. For video we often need a greater depth of field, plus the smaller file sizes per frame allows more options. This is the practical reason the GH5 was so far ahead of the competition at launch. The engineers could implement new things that were simply not possible with larger sensors without fans and much larger bodies (as with cinema cameras). This is why Panasonic won’t be abandoning MFT any time soon - with MFT they can push the envelope, and then migrate new features to full frame a couple of years later when it becomes possible to do. But even if that wasn’t so, there would be plenty of videographers demanding MFT sensor cameras. Many are like me and shoot both full frame and MFT.

    for now 4k 25 4.2.2 with the ninja is dont see any problems. also with the gh5 in low light yes it still has his own problems but i use lights at the moment and get bether results in those situations..... when everything is over to 6k or higher will go over to the next camera. the image quality is good for my for what i am shooting. beside that youtube is heavly still in 1080p and not 4k and the average consumer have 1080p screens instead of 4k..... its coming but for now. ill keep my gh5 and invest in lighting

    Just got S5 and had gh5 for years and a bit confused :) The codecs maybe better S5 (4.2.2) but it has a lower bitrate on S5 then GH5. Then 4k 60p its croped so that means you could not use FF and for wide shots you need super wide lens. Lenses are limited on L mount (wide collection of old lenes like m42, but no native affordable prime lenses) I have plenty 1.4 / 1.8 lenses on M43 and size its just more than half from FF L mount lenses. Quality of the image I would not say its a big step up. From GH5 and right lens you could get decent image. Button layout on s5 looks like panasonic G80 entry level comparing to GH5 whit much more extra buttons and better dieals. Dials I prepefer more on GH5. Also the menu on S5 is looks too small for my eye and I got 20/20 vision so prefer on GH5. Slow motion on S5 its on different dial mode S&Q and only records in MP4 WTF??? So whanted to move to FF but now Im so confused.... S1 & S1H not for me too heavy will consider to move to iPhone 13 pro max instead of S5 :)

  • @QuicksilverSG

    Aside from sharing the same brand name, it's hard to see the S5 as an "upgrade" to the GH5. While the menus and recording features are similar, everything else about these two camera systems is mutually incompatible. Since MFT lenses obviously cannot be adapted to work on the S5, GH5 users would have to abandon MFT's panoramic world of adapted and speedboosted lenses in favor of the high-priced L-mount niche of the S5 system. For those interested in moving up to a full-frame system, what makes Panasonic more attractive than Sony, Canon, or Nikon's FF mirrorless line-ups?

      @kp66udv 3 года назад +1

      @@nickharris5231 I have zero interest to know any IQ comparison on the R5, simply because it is not up to standard. Well, for other things such as AF and features set, then ok, R5 is quite impressive. As for S1H vs S5, I think their IQ is very similar from footages i saw so far. Well, bit rate etc. only makes a difference when doing in depth editing/coloring. I am more interested in the "general IQ look"....yes, the look, how it captures colors and lights (DR performance). These are the same at any bit rate, even at the lowest bitrate.

      @nickharris5231 3 года назад +1

      @@kp66udv IQ is similar, but the S1H has a lot more codecs and options. It's $500 more than the A7s III so Im interested in seeing long term usefulness of the complete feature sets between those two cameras... by someone that isn't obsessed with autofocus. It's a useful tool, but there are lots of us out there that have other features we'd trade it for and just manual focus like we have been since cameras were invented. The main attraction for me is the A7s III having 10 bit 4:2:2 at 4K 120p. That's pretty revolutionary for a small mirrrorless system. But I also love the practical, video focused layout and operation of Panasonic's cameras. In all likeliness, I'll probably hold onto my S1 until the next gen S1H releases and consider updating or trading out for Sony at that point.

      @@nickharris5231 As IQ has quite a few perspectives that represented it, the one that most essential to me is "natural look" , which are color and light distribution (inclusive of highlight rolloff and shadows dynamic and clarity). Sony has been weak on the highlight rolloff department. Luckily, Sony has been improving its color department generation after generation, now has come to a much improved results. So far, I see S1H/S5 has better IQ than A7Siii on "natural look" department. You are right, 4K120p 422 on A7Siii is an amazing feature. In fact, A7Siii performs very well in almost all recording modes, that is a great achievement. AF, it's sad that Panasonic still insist to use only contrast based AF, wondering why so stubborn.

    I will stay away from Panasonic because of that DFD. Sony Stomps it on AF. I have had great luck with Canon too. Why do I even bother commenting on this then. I love the interface and touch screen of the Panasonic. Nice sounding preamplifiers and nice 4K UHD video. I had a G7 and ran manual focus all the time because the DFD was mental. So Panasonic embrace PDAF and I am back for good, till then, Sony and Canon are my go too cameras.

    I'll take a Sony a7S III instead, please. It has better low-light performance and more reliable autofocus. I know the prices are wildly different, and the S5 offers more resolution for photography, but the a7S III is such a killer package for video.

  • @cheeeeezewizzz

    Hell for less than the price difference between the two cameras you could get the sigma 18-35 and a viltrox version 2. And you neglect to say in the video that such a combo produces shallower dof than FF is capable of with any standard zoom. A 13-25mm f1.3 zoom. Slightly shallower dof than an f2.8 zoom. In fact that lens functions with the .64x metabones speedbooster so you could even go a bit wider to 11.5-22.4mm f1.15 (let's call that an f1.2) for a higher price point. So the GH5 plus a sigma 18-35 and viltrox that gives shallow dof than the s5 can get with any standard zoom, even if you shell out for the expensive f2.8 FF zooms, would give better lowlight performance than the s5 is capable of, still costs less than the s5 with it's kit lens. And if you wanted to get CLOSE to what the GH5 and sigma can do (just close, since the s5 could never match it) you would need to shell out 2000 dollars extra for the S lineup's f2.8 zoom bringing your s5 price up to about 4000 dollars for inferior results to the gh5.
    How on earth did you develop such a ridiculous opinion?

    • @cheeeeezewizzz
      @cheeeeezewizzz 3 года назад

      OH and the sigma 18-35mm is lighter, even with the speedbooster attached, than the f2.8 zooms for FF.
