lol the AF in the beginning
Yeah, that sure sells it...
That was good for a laugh. “Entry level doesn’t mean it’s shit. It’s actually quite good.” Camera focuses on the trees behind Kai.
@@szoe139 It's hard to know if reviewers deliberately choose the worst AF settings to make a point, or they don't have the camera long enough to familiarise themselves with it. People who understand Panasonic cameras can get decent autofocus out of the latest models. It isn't as snappy as Canon or Sony in continuous AF, but is perfectly usable with the right tweaks, and in single shot is as good as virtually anything around. It's as if the only judgement on a new camera release is how well it vlogs out of the box. From a Canon, Fuji and Panasonic owner.
@@borderlands6606 Got the S5 on Launch, the AF is flawless for Photography and decent enough for Video.
I think for those this Camera is aimed at it really delivers, the Feature Set and overall Software Design are wonderful and for typical "GH5 workloads" it is absolutely a massive improvement in AF Performance, curiously enough factory settings tend not to give it optimum performance though.
I think any Purchase is a trade-off, The S5 plays in the same league as much more expensive bodies, except when it comes to fast-moving Video Situations that require ultra-responsive AF, I personally feel that Tradeoff is well-worth it.
In fact, even in fluent situations, there are two things that massively improve AF Performance: not shooting in V-Log and switching from Full Sensor to APS-C mode.
TL;DR:
As long as you don't plan on shooting a lot of fast-moving situations AF will work just fine.
@@philippvelimirovic2284 It's...video features are amazing and the AF is just decent. That seems like an odd match.
I see the Panasonic autofocus is present front and center 😂
ugh... I've seen two reviews on this and this one highlighted the cursed Panasonic autofocus issue right away.
Man it's much improved over previous efforts
At this rate they might as well stuff it in a box like the Z-cam and make it professional cinema camera.
Not like the autofocus will improve in the next 5 years.
NOPE for me. I would mainly use it for video and i need to trust the autofocus when needed.
It's basically their trademark now
Oh jeez that autofocus really isn't sure where to focus on sometimes
I think they didn’t put it on eyes and head focus
Classic Pana
I’ve been a professional videographer for over 10 years. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve filmed using autofocus. Yes it’s nice to have but judging from the comments, everyone is a vlogger and not a commercial videographer. This looks like a lovely little camera but I’m still leaning towards the S1H for my GH5s upgrade.
Cine cameras don't have autofocus (rarely). None of my cameras have ever had autofocus, cant say I missed having it tbh. don't see what the fuss is about
Having autofocus is nice but I still think people should learn how to manual focus. Thanks to Panasonic I learned that skill quite well.
I get that. But isn't it nice to have both? Even the high end Sony and Canon cinema cams are now getting their latest auto focus. Sure prob still limited use, but why not have it as an option?
Carl Kim it is nice to have both. I have the X-T3 now and I’m happy with Fujis Autofocus system. I just know in certain situations manual focus would be more beneficial and I think it’s a skill we should all learn.
@@AlisterMalcolm Manual focus is ok if you have monitors. I just started full time as a videographer and manual focusing on the tiny ass a7s2 screen is soooooo hard. Everything is soft even when peaking says it's in focus. And I'm given like 2 lenses, one of which is a Canon EF 70-200 adapted on MC-11. The stupid focus throw is like 3mm from 6m to infinity. Idk how I'm supposed to use it.
They should mention how well the audio limiting circuit prevents distortion while they are CONSTANTLY CLIPPING THE LEVELS.
Oof that autofocus is really struggling
2020 might be a year to forget but what a time to be in the market for a new camera. So many good options to choose from, not to mention cameras like the GH5, G9, and X-T3 seeing discounts! Keep up the great work, Kai. Be safe!
Good review! You always really put it to the test. Being a Lumix G9 user, this could be the next step into full frame. Hopefully the AF will improve with a future update.
After watching this video, you guys are great, and after examining in detail the AF, it seems that 4k60p does pretty well and for the most part, is really decent. I won't be running all over the place like you guys, but seeing the video for a second time, I think I will get this camera.
$2,000 is "entry level"? Also, for two grand I'd like the autofocus to work better.
We are living in strange times my friend
I think a lightly used A7 III serves much better for the same money
@@substygram4357 you're missing the point I think
@@substygram4357 Much much much lower video quality though. Ok for social media but that's about it.
If Panasonic and Sony could have a love child, oh wait. It's called the A7S3. Expensive unicorn though.
Cos the rest of the $1000 range entry levels are only good for photos.
Love Dan!!!! He is the shit!!!!!
Spent the whole video continuously focusing on the weakest point of the camera.
The one thing I learned from this vid is the nut-kick test. Seems like it would be pretty effective!
I would still ask to hold the distance first, but i bet this would be pretty effektive, yes.
I can see why A7iii still outsales all other FF cameras after two years.
a7iii and s5 are exact inverse of each other. a7iii just made sure the basic features are there while abandoning premium feature, pani boy on the other hand... oh boy!!
I could tell it was the S5 by the autofocus in the beginning. Damn. I still really want it and I'm still saving for it.
Same
@Jerimiah Cook: The Lone Sh📷📷ter Thank you so much. I absolutely love it. I'm even helping my friend and his crew capture footage for a documentary thing, he will have two black magic pocket cinema camera 6ks going while I'll be there with my S5. Just waiting for Panasonic to show off and release that 24mm f1.8 lens. Any day now...
Great Review! Too bad about the AF though. Still waiting for Kai to review Canon R5 and R6.
Very good review, I thought. Thank you Kai.
Reviewers seem to disagree about AF performance. You show it depends - and good enough for most users. Awesome review btw, great humour & information!
2k$ for a manual-focus Full Frame Mirrorless...yap, nailed it!
Full frame GH5 that's also excellent for photography for the same launch price, really sad for those who are unable to turn a wheel on their 50$ lens and need a 1000$ lens to do the work for them :/ It's an "actually competent videographer" dream camera
Autofocus makes me dizzy
Could be fixed with firmware update... Whenever that happens...
I'd rather spend $2k on manual focus full frame than some pos r5 that overheats like a mfkr. oh, and that pos is $5k
@@jorgem50 ya I would buy this camera over a concord too, and maybe a condo in florida
Colors do look good. Also, I used to have that Supreme jacket. Quite a classic!
this was tiresome and to some degree painful to watch with the constant in and out of focus.
Reminds of Armin van Buuren feat Sharon den Adel - In and Out of Love :D
Thank you for everything you provide. I have been following your videos for more than 8 years. You are creative and add flavor to the video 😅 and you have a special style. I prefer this camera or blak magic 4k because I want to buy one Ahmed from Iraq Basra
Too many damn choices! S5, XT4, A7Siii.... now if only Canon could build a camera that doesn't overheat!
For real.. I'm adding future release of Z6s to above list.
we’re to expect a new line of models from the most prominent manufacturers, perhaps a few cheaper models, with specific focus on full-frame and having a flip-screen, leaning towards the trend of “working from home”
Glen?? dafuk?
counting on a firmware update for the R5.....
skylinrg I’ve watched this show for ages!
Awesome if you will always use the new “finger focus” setup!
The colors grading on this video is amazing. Almost feels like I'm with you.
The mirrorless future is looking good!
Interesting choice to make the body smaller. Personally I'd have liked them to keep the body at GH5 size, and leave more space for improved IBIS...why...
The AF seems a bit poor?
“a bit”?!? It’s inadmissible!!!
"Cheating couple over there".
Oh right on man I didn't know you were a gooner. COYG! 😁
Can the on/off switch be re-programmed to a different button?
If Panasonic fix the autofocus issue and give you something a little close like Sony this can be a really good camera
Great review! Finally a full frame budget friendly “hybrid” camera that does what we need it to. Not lacking a flip out screen, 10 bit, or 4K 60. Oh and doesn’t over heat.
BMPCC 6K is cheap and do a lot more
You saw the horrible autofocus at the beginning in the video???
Xtremepower21 true true. I was thinking user error. I could be wrong though. It didn’t seem that bad on the DSLR shooters review. Not bad for a hybrid camera though.
@@Martin-PL Did you hear the word hybrid in the original comment? BMPCC can't take photos.
awesome
The running test! LOL. Facial and body autofocus work very well.
I do like this colors. wow
I love the NTG mic. It's the best mic I've ever owned
u can hear it hissing in this video. mine hisses too
@@ericdenq9871 it just sounded the best to me in my test ruclips.net/video/LulAYfCtaew/видео.html
Now the big question is, what will the new a7IV have for specs? I have an S1H but have not invested into the L-Mount lenses yet. Pre-ordered the a7SIII, but after using Pansonic since the GH4, and now having GH5, GH5S and S1H I wish I could/would stay in the system, but with the Sony beating Panasonic in specs now, and their video image looking pretty good I am very tempted to switch... Kai, you've been shooting Panasonic for a while now, are you switching to Sony for your videos or are you staying with Panasonic?
COYG!! 🎉
The colour science looks actually pretty good.
Hey Kai, I'm a great fan I've watched since the early days. Since the first of digital rev. Wanted to say I've always enjoyed your videos and that I'll be waiting to see how awesome your projects go. One day you should have a big project come out. Could you direct a movie or documentary? Anyway, great great work keep it up man.
You are right by where I used to live! hahaha I filmed here a few times too!
We heard in several reviews that the autofocus performance is reduced when recording externally with hdmi.
I'm not sure you can call it a review when they dont' mention this.
Who else is overwhelmed by all the sick gear being released while under lockdown? ahaha
I'm just sick of being broke and not being able to buy everything
Does the S5 have the '4K Live Cropping' and 'Focus Transition' features from the GH5?
If have this camera on my list, this is a great one to makes vlogs with 👍😍
The price needs to be right, but it looks sometimes out of focus
This is such a great camera, it would be so cool if they could change their autofocus system to work like Canons or Sonys! That would definitely change my opinion about it and I would probably buy one, unless another brand brings out an even better Camera this year :)
The cameraman is Dan "NOT OKAY" Chung, legend!
Hey, a fellow Arsenal supporter! Woo!!!
Hi! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to. Partly because my lack of experience in the professional camera realm and partly because of the lack of information out there. I want to buy a Lumix S5 and I also need a lens for it. I want to film super wide angle at 4k60 ( so the image will be cropped ) and I am looking for a lens that will give me roughly the same image as an iPhone 11/12/13 on the ultra wide camera in video mode ( iPhone crops in ultra wide video mode ) and from what I understand the focal length of the ultra wide on the iPhone is 13mm ( in photo mode ). What lens should I buy for the S5 ( preferably prime ) for this effect aka iPhone ultra wide video mode ( 13mm cropped ). Thanks 😐
is it true that since corona you do all the voice in post?
This review is hilarious 😂. Though the A roll footage looks unsaturated or washed out
The focus on the couple 😂
Dan Chung sighting! I saw that the improved AF will be added to the other S cameras in later firmware.
Looks sleek
How do you know it's recorded using Panasonic? Subject is always in-focus and not in-focus at the same time. Panasonic Quantum AF.
Is the AF actually this bad or is just because it's set wrong? Was interested in this camera but now I'm not so sure :(
yikes not a bad deal but the AF is laughable. great video as always.
hey kai !! how are you , witch cam do you recomend for commercials but on budget, lumis or sony a 7sIII ? or a sony a 7III with ninja v
Is there any way to check focus while recording. I feel like this is a deal breaker for me. I have been a Sony shooter for the last 8 years and i'm entertaining the idea of the S5 due to the 10bit recording and low cost of the camera. I can live without AF as I'm quite comfortable manual focusing, but no magnification assist while recording....yikes
wow!
TIL; Kai is A GOONER ❤️ Thought I couldn’t like this guy anymore than I already do! #ComeOnYouGunners
I remember everyone was complaining about AF in 4K from M50 and RP. It's the same as in Panasonic - contrast detect. If you can tap on a screen and a camera will focus in that area, that's good enough for me. 5s - S5.. makes sense :D
The M50 and RP both use DPAF (phase detect).
@@Rosyna not in 4K mode
I currently focus on documentary films (on a very lean starting budget; all out of pocket) and my initial canera is the old Panasonic UX-180.... . I am looking at the S5 because the color science is similar, but it can push me closer towards the future..... from 8 bit and beyond. Plus it is a package that I can take on the motorcycle as well as hike with and has the weather resistance that the UX-180 does not have..... for out of the box, I can match the UX-180 with Cin-D mode, or switch to V-Log between primary and B camera..... that is my thinking anyway.
The Seaman gag 😂
Broo its just 18 min about video an the autofocus... Can you still take photos with it??
"So, I'm actually being filmed on an S5"
>immediately goes out of focus
Lots of sick 😫 gear ⚙️ is being released during lockdown
What we needed was Panasonic to buy out Olympus for the Phase detect, in conjunction with future ToF that Panasonic is working on. Olympus could have worked on the photo work and Panasonic could have worked on the video work. They could have also combined the OIS systems so that all the future lenses would work interchanably w/ eachother in dual IS.
How about in body Stabilizer? Didn't hear about it much and slow motion? Does it give Vhr?
I'm having compatibility issues with my ntg video mic on the s5
2:32 that's why we love Kai =))
God the autofocus
Panasonic: "The focus issues are improved!"
guy "so the focus issues are fixed?
Panasonic: "The focus issues are improved"
still a lot of camera thou
wish my GH5 had linear MF focusing. i'd buy lumix glass then
5:39 Wait, WTF, that's my wife, who the hell is that dude she's with? 🤬
Your accent and sense of humor reminds me a bit of Richard Ayoade. (compliment)
Which would be better for video....Fuji XT-4 or this S5? I can't decide!!!
Kai: "Mostly the focus is on point"
Comments: "focus is shit "
In another review I watched they said they were asked to test AF without an external screen.
Lucky on youtube there is a good mix of "entertainment" based reviewers mixed with competent reviewers.
Look forward to testing it myself.
Will S5 do 4K 60fps 8 bit color?
"im actually being filmed on an s5 right now"
*autofocus immediately starts crapping out*
96MP high resolution mode would be pretty good for my copy stand.
Would like to see more on the photo quality but I guess this video is targeted as vloggers. I do both so 20 seconds of photography autofocus seemed lacking.
Matrix shit only from now on plz. Kai YOU ARE THE ONE!
Can I jam sync timecode like I can with the GH5s?
Nice Jordan 3 Katrinas
I wanted to upgrade to this camera from Sony a6400 but having a cropped sensor when filming video makes it a bit of a pointless upgrade, no?
I hope the latest firmware improves the focus.
Weird request, where did you get your trousers? They are very cool. Don’t hold it against me. Big fan by the way
Still got the revoring!
I got a questionn regarding using 50/60fps. Why dont you use that frame with 1/50th ss? WOuldn't it give the same motion blur effect as when using 24fps at 1/50th?
You understand it wrong, the Rule of thumb about 180º shutter rule for getting cinematic motion blur is double the shutter speed per frame rate so 2 ss * 1/framerate (2ss * 1fps).
if you have a 24fps you get 1/48 ss or 1/50th since most non-cine camera don't offer 1/48th
if you have 50 fps you get 1/100 or 1/125th ss or " ".
if you have 60 fps you get 1/120 or 1/125th ss
if you have 120fps you get 1/250th ss
so if you meant to get the motion blur same as the 24fps then you should double the your shutter in regards to what Fps you're shooting on.
I see what you did at 0:43 😂
I’m looking for the lens market of a Fuji, the coloring of a Sony, the focus of a Panasonic, and the heat tolerance of a Canon in 8k.
DfD, clearly the superior autofocus solution
How are you recording the cameras screen with the focus marker chasing around?
Yep, bout it just for the lens. Makes a well rounded lens.
Which lens?
Bring some film contents kaiii comeee onnnn
it takes photos too??? smashing
When can we expect a test of the Fujifilm XF50mmF1.0 R WR ?
its this or the canon r6 i still thinking? love the video features though...
wait so are you still buying the X100v? you mentioned such in your video
