FYI, for those who may sometimes rely on the GH5 autofocus, there are a few youtube videos that indicate setting the shutter angle to 179, rather than 180, may increase the AF speed and effectiveness...

I really love the 'Focus Transition' feature on the GH5/GH5S. I love thinking of new ways to use it. Fun fact - in the S range of cameras, it's only available on the S1H, as it's considered a pro-feature.
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Absolutely - you'd have thought that as Panasonic cameras don't have great CAF, they'd give all their users as much focusing help as possible....but then again, they have to make the S1H special to justify the price I guess.

This is helpful. Thank you. They're also a lot of settings around autofocusing all over the camera setting menus. So I'm allow for the half price others turn it off. I've noticed some challenges with that. It'd be good to understand what settings work with what operational functionality. The AF/AE button is there is a fallback... But I'm still figuring this all out. PS, I use my GH5 for video and v log.

So shooting 10bit would eliminate banding/potential flickering indoors? I was told most US lights are at 60hz and having SS in variables of 60 would eliminate it but sometimes during my broll I can still see it when using house lighting. Thanks!

vfr is just for a creative look out of camera. i like it cuz it's already processed as a slo mo file which isn't always a big deal but it's nice having it right out of camera sometimes
@@CalebHoover mmm i think im understanding that much but my confusion is presented when actually selecting lets say for ex 4k 24fps 8bit and then after selecting this we then go into VFR and select 60 ... so im shooting ... 4k 24fps 8bit at 60fps? its just not making sense to me, its not registering, how this is different from selecting differently from the beginning and just going with 4k 60fps 8 bit. im not sure if im communicating best im sorry im trying to understand here

Thanks for the video. I get harsh highlights especially with the natural profile. I use zebraz and histogram and take care not to overexpose, everything looks OK on the camera LCD but when i bring the footage in post often the highlights are not optimal. I notice that there is a lot of information in the blown highlights. Is that a GH5 characteristic, and if yes how can i manage this issue better?

Im thinking of picking this up. What are the file sizes for each format. Say like 1 minute of DCI 4K 60p ? How much space does it take on disk ? ..................... Is there some location where they give a chart of the file sizes for each format and resolution of this camera ? And will the files edit smooth (timeline scrubbing) on a Ryzen 5 3800 ?
You didn’t mention master pedestal. I find the GH5 crushes the blacks. Master pedestal can fix this. Maybe it is because I shoot a lot of concerts, live theatre and dance shows. I also turn down the highlights.

Just got my camera, I'm a total beginner when it comes to filmmaking but when I go to the settings it has a photo icon instead of the video M icon and has completely different settings. How do I fix this? sorry if its a dumb question
I've been watching a lot of your videos and I know since then youve stepped up your camera from GH5. I'm heading to Japan and I want to get the most out of my camera and was thnking to getting VLOG. I believe had said in your other videos that you just prefer natural because its basically good enough out of the camera. I believe it cause I've been on Natural forever but I dont always goto japan and so I was curious what your thoughts would be on buying VLOG to shoot in 4k24 10bit, but shoot the slow mo stuff in 4k60 8 bit Natural. Does that sound too troublesome to try and color match after the fact? I'm in no way a colorist but I would love to get the most out of my camera and I'm not trying to put out videos on a timely schedule either. I've seen a lot of amazing VLOG stuff on youtube but then I've also seen a lot of people saying to avoid it and just do cine-d or nat or whatever profile you prefer.

Celeb, A lot of the GH5 channels and pros seem to use 4K 60 instead of the in camera slow motion. I can't seem to get a straight up answer to the question.... IS it better quality to shoot in 4k 60 and slow down in post or just shoot in Variable and have the slow motion done in camera. My friend on RUclips Doug Jenson seems to think that you'd be better off in variable 4K 60 as opposed to tweaking in post 4K 60. I'd like to know what you think if you can elaborate a bit. Is it the same? What do you use. Thank you.

Really appreciated this! Quick question though, when I tried to load in the custom LUTS it seems that my GH5 isn't reading it. When I tap on "Read LUT file" it says "This menu item can't be set" I'm not too sure what to do.
Any chance your Lut is .cube file? If so the file cannot be recognized by the camera. To avoid it you have to convert the file into .vlt file with specific tools online.
@Caleb Hoover QUESTION: So when I set my ISO to 1/3 and then go in to adjust it I'm still limited to AUTO - 400 - 800 - 1600 - 3200 and it stops there. I can't do thirds and I'm capped at 3200...any idea?
great update Caleb. My most frequent shooting modes are 4k8bit60p and FHD8bit120p(VFR mode) I cant figure out a way to quickly switch between the two. Every-time I switch to FHD with VFR I have to go into the VFR menu and select 120p. Anyway to directly program these two "modes" to a custom button? I've tried to work it out but haven't been able. Also the GH5 is still a new tool to me so I might not be as savy as a chap like you.

We want to film a lot of stuff indoor like workout and cooking and stuff i want to buy the viltrox and sigma 18-35 lense and i am asking my self if i need the gh5 or the gh5s to comfortably film indoor (i have a gimbal, but well shooting with just the GH5 and its good stabilizer is probably nice to have too, with the gh5s i am going to use the gimbal all time i guess ) maybe you can give me a hint thy in advance :)
Hey Man, I'm useless with my GH5, I plugged in your setting to shoot some testimonial footage from a student and all my clips are in slow motion with no audio. I must have done something wrong, I'm guessing it was from the variable frame rate. Is there a way I can fix the footage so its regular speed? Is my audio gone, or hiding? Any help would be apricated thanks.
Hi Caleb, I am using the GH5 and I just realized a big problem when filming videos. When I keep Everything the same and film indoors my videos play fine, BUT when I video outside in brighter light with the same settings something is happening so my videos get all pixelated. (So my exposure is set for the outdoor light so the indoor videos look dark but I am filming in front of a window so I am getting some of the outside light.) Even the thumbnail for the outside .MOV file is a quicktime icon (on my iMac) whereas the video filmed inside has one of the frames as the thumbnail icon. Both videos were about 600 - 700 MB, both videos on a SanDisk 128GB Extreme Pro SD card. I tried so many different things like adjusting the focus option from ASF/AFF to M but that does not make a difference. I have the settings similar to your settings in your video about the GH5 settings that you mention in this video. I have it set to record in .MOV format. For the record quality I am using 1020x1080, 420/8bit/Long GOP, 100Mbps, LPCM, VFR available. Variable Frame Rate OFF When I shoot photos outside there is no problem. Also I can view the video in camera preview without the pixelation but when I transefer the video file from my SD card onto my iMac it plays horribly. It looks like a bunch of color cubes. I tried looking at the messed up video in DaVinci Resolve as well as QuickTime and the video in the Edit tab of Resolve looks really weird. Some normal frames at the beginning and then a bunch of green frames and then red with Media Offline at the end of the same clip - just one clip for the movie. I do not really know where to start with figuring out what is going on. Do you have any ideas?

One or the other might drift a little. I think Canon cameras can sort it out, you turn it on or off but you don't set the frequency.

That would be 120/125 Shutter
yeah it would adjust to account for the variable frame rate. so the shutter speed for vfr of 60fps it would at 120

yeah natural is gonna produce harsh highlights. what do you have the zebra set to. i usually have it at 95% for natural.

What metering mode do you use?
I can't get AF to work in video mode, only the Auto settings such as P mode.
I set the first setting but mine isnt showing the angle at the bottom? Tried scrolling through the DISP button but it still doesnt show, any ideas?
What is the difference between MP4LPCM and MOV?
LPCM is a more editing friendly format of mp4. mov you'll be fine.

I would create proxies. That way your computer won’t have to work so hard. My workflow is so much faster. Try it out and you’ll be happy

FYI "All I" footage is easier for a computer to edit than traditional long-gop formats

at 6:38 your video has me select the variable frame rate, although my camera doesnt allow me to click it, it says OFF. Is there a way to change this?

When I keep Everything the same and film indoors my videos play fine, BUT when I video outside in brighter light with the same settings something is happening so my videos get all pixelated. (So my exposure is set for the outdoor light so the indoor videos look dark but I am filming in front of a window so I am getting some of the outside light.)
Even the thumbnail for the outside .MOV file is a quicktime icon (on my iMac) whereas the video filmed inside has one of the frames as the thumbnail icon. Both videos were about 600 - 700 MB, both videos on a SanDisk 128GB Extreme Pro SD card.
I tried so many different things like adjusting the focus option from ASF/AFF to M but that does not make a difference. I have the settings similar to your settings in your video about the GH5 settings that you mention in this video. I have it set to record in .MOV format.
For the record quality I am using 1020x1080, 420/8bit/Long GOP, 100Mbps, LPCM, VFR available.
Variable Frame Rate OFF
When I shoot photos outside there is no problem.
Also I can view the video in camera preview without the pixelation but when I transefer the video file from my SD card onto my iMac it plays horribly. It looks like a bunch of color cubes.
I tried looking at the messed up video in DaVinci Resolve as well as QuickTime and the video in the Edit tab of Resolve looks really weird. Some normal frames at the beginning and then a bunch of green frames and then red with Media Offline at the end of the same clip - just one clip for the movie.
I do not really know where to start with figuring out what is going on.
Do you have any ideas?
Was this video shot on a GH5 with these settings?

Seems it's not so good idea to show the camera screen text misfocused. Maybe text clearance more valuable than huge bokeh
Someone gave me a GH5S, would setting that up be the same way? Or is the GH5 better.
