Just got the GH5 ! First thing I had to do was sit down with it and go over this video multiple times. Really helps get a handle on settings. Great video.
Mattias Nilsson pointed out on Facebook-you CAN use 4K60p and 10-bit recording in both MOV or MP4 (LPCM) modes. (My mistake at 6:20.) He's right, and I must've been confusing an earlier version of preproduction firmware that could only do it in MP4 (LPCM) mode.
Wow G... I am so glad that there are great souls like you in the WORLD! Just the fact that you took the time to not just show us your how-to video, but also include your settings to BOOT! Praise you young brother, and may the gods of the galaxy always watch over you!

Yes! It’s been fantastic :) Really fun to learn on, and produces good stuff! Evening video and super slow motion with less than optimal light can definitely be grainy, but for the price I cannot complain :) I guess my main lesson learned so far is that not everything needs to be 4k60 😅
Wow the ability to save camera settings to the sdcard is a game changer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I normally spend hours modifying settings on rentals. Now I can rent and install my settings!
Just received my GH5 last night after years with my GH4's. I'd made most of these changes already, but I like your custom button assignment so I tweaked your settings file for my other needs and resaved. LOVE being able to load settings... thanks man! You're the best!
i'm using c1 for 4k60 (8-bit) and c2 for c4k24 10-bit. my mnemonic is #1 for default or best and #2 for 24fps. but we agree on c3-1 (at 150fps for me, although you can change on-the-fly). i might work in 3-2 and 3-3 for vlog and non-vlog modes as there's about a dozen changes to make in those cases.
Same here. And I saved different settings to have a 24fps tungsten C1, C2, C3; 24fps daylight C1, C2, C3; 30fps daylight C1, C2, C3... etc. Pain to setup but very handy.
Hi Griffen, Thanks a lot for this video. A couple of years ago Your gh4 video helped me Very much so I was Very pleased to find out that you also Made the GH5 version. Happy filmmaking and stay healthy. Greetz from Robin, the Netherlands
This is probably the most helpful video I've seen on the GH5 so far. Thanks Griffin! I have the GH5 too and this is some good info. Is there any way to put the camera in autofocus in 180fps VFR? I think it only goes in manual focus when shooting slow motion and timelapse too. Thanks again, I think you should do another video on recommended auto focus setting for youtubers.
I'm in charge of filming a work event tomorrow (just recording, nothing too crazy) and wanted to familiarize myself with the company Lumix GH5 camera before I do. Thank you so much for your in-depth video, appreciate it a lot!
Hi Griffen! I have been using the gh4 for over a year now, your gh4 guide was very very helpful so thank you! I am curious about the filmmaking aspect of the gh5. I've heard that the in body stabilisation or some form of e stabilisation cannot be truly turned off. Because I reply on my sachtler tripod a lot as well as my ahi yuan crane, would this mean that the camera stabilisation will result in micro jitters when using physical stabilisation tools such as those above? A terrible thing would be having bought an expensive tripod and upgraded the camera and result in jitters. Now that gh5s is out and it does not have ibis. Does that mean the gh5 won't be good with tripod etc? And I'm curious why you think of them. just wanna know your opinion. Thank you!
Yes it can be turned off. If the lens has an OIS switch that will turn it all off. The E-Stabilisation can be turned off from the Movie menu. However where you might have ground vibration such as in my case a subterranean stream, the IBIS/Dual on my G9 will take it out even on the best mounts. The old rule of turn the stabilisation off when on a tripod does not always apply, framing and focussing is better with the stabilisation on. On an astronomical german equatorial mount the camera is in constant motion tracking the sky, the motors cause a little vibration too. The camera stabilisation does not try to counter-correct that motion. On an Alt-Az mount the movement is more jerky, left-right, up-down, and that can confuse the stabiliser, however it usually just smooths the movement out without ill effect. OTOH I don't think you need an external stabiliser gimbal with the Dual-IS/Dual-2. I can hand-hold the PL100-400 on the G9, and that probably applies to the GH5 series too. It will depend on the mass of extraneous clutter you have on the rig, free the camera up so it is independent of bolt-on bits, fwiw it works being bounced around on a motorbike (I do need a better chest harness though).
Can you guys try something for me? Switch on your GH5, put stabilized Panasonic glass on it, switch to movie mode and take manual whitebalance. Do you lose stabilization too?
Great thank you Griffin! And while you at it, ask them if they can implement "bulb ramping" into the time lapse mode, which is the holy grail for day to night timelapses! And frankly speaking timelapse mode didn't really advance since the GH3 ;)
I had this problem too and didn't even realize why. I was fooling around and sitting there wondering why in the world my shots weren't stabilized as before.
I see Griffin reproduced it, but I can't… I have however heard of this before. Do you need to follow the exact steps outlined (i.e. power up camera without a lens, put the lens on…) or is it simply that when you go to manual WB, you lose stabilization? Which lens, specifically? And by Manual WB, do you mean the custom (point at something neutral), or do you mean Kelvin? I've tried it all and don't lose stabilization. If you haven't tried it yet… do a reset of your camera (you can save then restore your settings). See if that makes a difference?
This is the most badass camera ever made. I hope Panasonic keeps updating the software on it until it's reached it's full potential. I hope this is the only camera I'll ever need and I'm going to try to get a second one down the road as a B cam
Panasonic GH5 supports 10bit for over 1 billion colors with NO banding in the video. Sony A7sii supports 8bits for 16.7 million colors with some banding in the video. YOU ARE A CAMERA GOD!!! Thank you I downloaded your pack, uploaded like you explained, and then BOOM! I have an amazing movie making machine. I appreciate you
well, tomorrow my gh5 is finally arriving here in Belgium. It is really thanks to you and your professional view that i bought it. I will sure download your settings. thanks al lot --freelance camera operator franky dermaut
Hey Griffin... We met briefly while we were both speaking at the Lumix booth at PPE. Thanks for putting your favorite settings together here and sharing.
Thanks to this video, I was able to confidently walk on set expecting to shoot with a GH5 having never touched one before. Everything was where you said it would be. They were none the wiser :D
Still one of the best setting videos. Just set up my GH5 with this, thanks! Panasonic settings are far too complex (not bad things, just too many of them). Your settings make it intuitive. Off to shoot something on this now. Thanks GH!
Thanks very much! It's a terrific camera but a little daunting to set up. Your manner of presenting this information is really excellent and easy to understand.
I have been waiting for a video like this. Thank you so much. I moved from the BMPCC to the GH5, and the menu system was overwhelming. Thank you so much!!!
Will you be making another video like this for the GH6? "How to set up your new Panasonic GH6 for Filmmaking" This video really "sent me on my way" with the GH5 to explore more and do more. Thanks.
Griffin! love your body tour, and describing every single option! Very helpful for ppl considering buying lumix gh5. You just showed full theoritical potential of this camera! Big thanks! :)
I just got a GH5 camera and I love it... your video and settings just made me love it even more. this video was absolutely worth watching and i learned a lot. thankyou.
thanks for posting this. I Already set the gh5 from your video on "setting up the GH4 for filmmaking". .....a lot of the settings in the menu transfer over... but thanks...this is a huge bonus. your awesome!!
Wow that was so good ! I just bought a GH5 to improve my videos quality on my channel and this is going to help me a lot. Plus, you have such a nice energy, that makes the all difference! Thank you
Thank you so much for this video. It helped me considerably. I just picked it up yesterday and it is the first DSLR body style cam I owned. So all the features and buttons and knobs are not intuitive for me. Being able to download your settings helped with options that was grayed out and now I can access them and play around with these as well. Great video!
Great job with the clip, Griff. Just bought my GH5 a few hours ago and this presentation really did give me a head start in understanding the menu. Thumbs up!
Thank you so much for this video and the download. I was feeling overwhelmed with my new camera but this has really helped me set up. Really grateful :-)
The HAND-CUT video was really good. Very well made. So now I have the camera but I will not get close to your work Griffin. But thanks for inspiring me to do better music videos for my band. Keep up the good work...
I have messed around with a few newer cameras that seem like they should be better than my gh5, and maybe its a comfort thing but this camera Is just right. love the gh5 so much
@@GriffinHammond I just picked one up! Got a pretty good deal with a Leica 12-60mm F2.8-4. I didn't see it mentioned, but what is the best choice between 24 hz and NTSC as the system frequency? Is there much of a difference? Pain points in choosing 24 hz? I put mine on 24 hz but it looks like I then need to use VFR to be able to record in 60 or 120 fps. I saw a comparison video where 24 hz looked just a little bit nicer
i just want to say THANK YOU man for this most efficient and effective tutorial; there were several to choose from, but this was the one (that got me rolling on gh5!
Griffin, Your setting make perfect sense, especially waveform and custom layout. I intend on getting a G85 to start with and then add a GH5 and B-roll the G85. It's all for my daughters YT channel and getting the hardware together is a little bit daunting right now. Thanks for the tutorial, I sub'ed and liked as it was worth finding and keeping for future reference.
Hands down the best and most useful video I've watched yet on the GH5. Ordered mine this evening, a new chapter for me, and this helps so much. Thank you!
Good for you Griffin- When I received my GH4 a couple of years ago - I still remember finding your setup video - was a big help. Great to see you are still going to be that first video people go to to start out with the GH5. Nice job.
Hey man. Your first GH4 video helped me out a ton as soon as I got it. Super helpful and hardly had to come back to the channel. Finally upgraded to a GH5 and your video helps me out yet again. Thanks again! I shot my first documentary in South Africa with my GH4 and it worked wonders for me. Stabilizing 4K footage in a 1080 sequence almost feels like cheating. So many masterful dolly movements can be created with a steady hand and a warp stabilizer! Anyways keep up the good work and congrats on 65K subs!
I remember first getting my GH5, not really knowing much about cameras at all and watching this video! I knew nothing about cameras and editing then, now I have my own business and also work full time as a videographer, crazy 3 years!
That's awesome, Seb! It's the beautiful thing about video production, how quickly you can pick up these skills and turn it into a career.
I come back here constantly when I forget how to access a specific function to change since this video covers the GH5 so well. Your quality attention to detail is greatly appreciated.

after watching 4 or 5 of these "setting up your GH5" videos i must say this is the best one :D
Thank you Mikkel!

hahaha me but mine is coming on tuesday
i don't have one, but shot with one, and wish i new that ;)
i had it and returned it.
mainlymusicman what did you not like?
the dealbreaker was the video just fell apart in low light. which is all i shoot. iso 3200 is barely usable. many ways its nice. the dual image stabilization is nice.
the noise tests i saw on youtube looked very impressive... but when you get the camera home if you even go near the iso control , well, its just noisy.
also i hated the live view/viewfinder during focusing. its like theres a delay latency or something, and took forever to go through the entire travel of focus. this was with the pan 35-100mm.
a couple small things like the display button is impossible to find or press in the dark. unable to assign iso to the rear thumb wheel like on the a7s. battery life not as good as the gh4.
another thing i noticed is ...i have a barely 2 year old pc with 4k monitor and 4k video card and it struggles to play the gh4's 4k files.

Just picked up a GH5 here in May 2019, still useful!!!

You are a champion. Thank you!
FINALLY picked up a GH5...and of course, this is the first video I watch :) Thanks, Griffin.
Pro tip: use C1 for 4K24p, C2 for 4K60p, and C3 for 1080@120-180p.
i'm using c1 for 4k60 (8-bit) and c2 for c4k24 10-bit. my mnemonic is #1 for default or best and #2 for 24fps. but we agree on c3-1 (at 150fps for me, although you can change on-the-fly). i might work in 3-2 and 3-3 for vlog and non-vlog modes as there's about a dozen changes to make in those cases.

Yup, it saves the shutter speed.

Such a Legend! Thanks alot for this Griffin!

Hey, Griff thanks so much for doing this! I watched your GH4 one as well back in the day. Just wanted to say that 4k 60p is available in MOV!

I just picked up the GH5 last month and your video is simply perfect, amazing and very informative and greatly appreciated. Great work and thank you!
Thank you so much for this! Just got this camera and this was invaluable for my setup!
I watched your great video when I bought my GH5 and come back from time to time as a reminder of functions. Stay Safe Mike
Big thanks! :)
Just got the GH5 today, thanks for a great walk thru video, and for the settings!
I just got a GH5 camera and I love it... your video and settings just made me love it even more. this video was absolutely worth watching and i learned a lot. thankyou.
I’m so glad they fixed then lvf sensor what a pain. Thanks for doing all the work for me! Just got my GH5S
You rock Griffin! Just got my GH5 and I'm blown away by it.. these settings etc help make it even better. thanks for being you!
The best video i've watched for the GH5, thank you so much for being so thorough, i wish i had watched this the first day I got this camera
thanks for posting this. I Already set the gh5 from your video on "setting up the GH4 for filmmaking". .....a lot of the settings in the menu transfer over... but thanks...this is a huge bonus. your awesome!!
Hooray, you! Nicely done, Grif. Just received my GH5, and it's more camera than I know how to use, but your intro was very helpful.
Wow that was so good ! I just bought a GH5 to improve my videos quality on my channel and this is going to help me a lot. Plus, you have such a nice energy, that makes the all difference! Thank you
I can't tell you how helpful your video was. Thank you very much.
I'm really happy to hear that.
Thanks. You helped me set mine up. Have to say the focusing is still an issue.
Super helpful video, even though I have used GH4 for years. Just purchased GH5 for our in-house video work. This is a workhorse!
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video. I picked up a GH5 recently and have found this video very helpful.
Just paused this to watch your documentary. I’m so glad I did.
Just got this camera and you made my life incredibly easier.
thankyou i just got a gh5 this is a brilliant walkthrough
thankyou again
I have messed around with a few newer cameras that seem like they should be better than my gh5, and maybe its a comfort thing but this camera Is just right. love the gh5 so much
It's a great camera. Still my go-to in 2020.
Great video thanks Griffin! I really think Panasonic should send one to Nick so you guys can discuss GH5 shooting on the podcast. :)
My GH5 can drive a car now after loading up Griffin's settings. Great video!
i just want to say THANK YOU man for this most efficient and effective tutorial; there were several to choose from, but this was the one (that got me rolling on gh5!
They should have a 'super like' button for videos like this ! Really useful, and thanks for the set-up file.
Thank you, Marvin!
Thank you for taking the time to go over the GH5! I look forward to more videos on the GH5.
So chill, packed with good info. You're the Bob Ross of video. Thanks!
Thanks, mine arrives tomorrow and I will be watching this again.
Really helpful video! I finally found out how to stop the FHD mode punching in. That was driving me insane
What is AF/AE lock? You brushed by that option during 11:37
See it now, never mind the grayed out operation mode, cause I do have the switch on the lens :-), thanks for all the info Griffin!
I've been using this for months changing to the 180 fps through the menu. Thanks very much for posting. Super helpful!
Thanks so much Griff. Your set up already installed and working in my new GH5!! Great for you an Panasonic !!
Hands down the best and most useful video I've watched yet on the GH5. Ordered mine this evening, a new chapter for me, and this helps so much. Thank you!
Thank you Griffin..... I am new to panasonic and this video was very helpful
Used your video for my GH4 and now for my GH5 thanks Griff 👊 fist bump
Good for you Griffin- When I received my GH4 a couple of years ago - I still remember finding your setup video - was a big help. Great to see you are still going to be that first video people go to to start out with the GH5. Nice job.
Thanks Jim!
Great video - buying my GH5 this week and am super excited
Hey Griffin. Thanks for creating this video. I've come back to it 3-4 times now and I'm learning something new every time. Cheers.
This tutorial is worth watching..thanks I have learnt a lot
Solid video even 3 years later! Cheers Griffin
Thank you-I appreciate the feedback!
Many thanks Griffin. Really enjoyed your setup movie for the GH4 and was hoping you were going to do one on the GH5. And you did!
