As someone who has not picked up my gh4 in over a year, this video was so helpful to refresh my memory- not only on what all the key settings are, but on where to find them in the menus quickly. Such a time saver!
I will bookmark this as a guide because it is so all-encompassing and well explained. Sometimes a month or two will go by and I won't use the GH4 for videos and then I have forgotten half the stuff I once knew. I appreciate your effort to help us out here. Thank you.
I still have a GH4 and over the years I find myself continually coming back to this tutorial video to tweak my own settings. One of the best I've seen on RUclips!
Very concise, insightful video short of the GH4, and most graciously delivered! It's a real gift to be able to deliver so much high quality information in such a short period of time. Thanks for the high tech philanthropy, it's the best GH4 review I've found on RUclips.
I have gone back to this video a number of times when I found myself lost in a menu or, well, just lost. I don't shoot enough Video with my GH4 to be good, but I do have to have the outcome look professional and that is where you come in. I am now a subscriber and look forward to your videos. Your presentation is also easy to digest, friendly and fun. Thanks!
Thank you, Griffin! It's funny how a once-made video will be helpful and relevant for many years to come! Today, I've been setting up a new GH4, and all these tips saved me a ton of time! Much appreciated!
So true. I am picking up my camera after 3 years. And had forgotten everything and with this video I could quickly refresh my memory and warm up again to my GH4
Gh4 is still relevamt in 2021.. At the end of the day...its about how this cameras image looks.....which is very cinematic... In fact...it was used on tje aerial shots of the Hollywood production...."A walk in the woods" with Nick Nolte and Robert Redford..
I know this was published almost 4 years ago but I just bought this camera used without the manual and I just wanted to thank you for this video! Excited to use my "new" toy :)
You are one of the people that made me upgrade from a 600D (t3i) to a GH4 today! The amount of functions is making my brain hurt. Lets see if this helps. Thanks in advance!
1 year ago when you uploaded these gh4 videos, i decided that i want to upgade to gh4 from canon 700d. Your Sriracha Documentary especially inspired me to get the gh4. Today i bought the gh4 and samyang 16mm t2.2 Cine lens. After i set up the camera like in this video it was beatiful to use. Now i can start making my documentary what i have planned for months. Thank you! :)
How do you like the screen? It doesn't look that good but still i'm looking at it from the camera and then through my screen so it's not fair to make assumptions.
mbickerdike17, In my soon-to-be-released comparison video, I shot some high ISO side-by-side footage to compare against the GH3. I thought the GH3 was good at high ISOs; the GH4 is even better.
My teacher just handed me one of these. He got a bit mad seeing me use my Canon 7D for a movie I'm filming, so this walk-through guide was super helpful! Thanks Griffin!
Well thought overview and been looking forward to this in-depth video you have done. Really interested in this camera. I have Canon EF glass that I want to use with this camera (50mm 1.4 / 70-200 2.8). With the adapters that are out now, can Canon glass work well with the GH4 with a low-cost adapter? Never used a lens adapter before and wondering what to expect when using a Canon lens adapter on a GH4. Also, how is the GH4 as a photo camera? I got a pair of Canon 60Ds now and desperately need an upgrade.
I'm not sure if they make electronic connecting adapters for Canon-to-Panasonic. Chances are, you can get a really cheap adapter ring, but then your lenses will be all-manual on the GH4. The few photos I've taken so far look good, but I've never been much of a photographer. My experience with all the GH cameras is that they're better for video, and don't do photos as well as other brands.
Griffin Hammond I expect to be all manual for video but for me, I never experienced with adapters at all so I'm real new at that side and was wondering any differences with using them. That's the one thing that has me not going full into it is the lens fitting. If it had a EF mount on the GH4, I'm sold! I may just have to get the GH4 for video and a similar priced Canon (6D) for photo. I've shot photos with a 6D before and produced great results for what I need. The video specs on the GH4 are just impressive and the sample clips I've downloaded are great quality.
MXPTV theres a company called metabones that makes very good quality adapters they have 2 main sets of adapters one that is just a reqular mount to mount adapter and a speed booster which essentially allows your lens one extra stop of light and increases framing so your micro 4/3 sensor essentially becomes a super 35 sensor.. my experience with adapters usually ends up in a very slightly softer image than on the native mount but that is so slight it barely makes a difference. The speed boosters are a bit pricey but from what i have heard worth it
John Blair I did hear about Metabones maybe releasing a speedbooster for a M43 lens fitting. Thanks for the info John and Griffin as well. Looking forward to getting my hands on this!
MXPTV As others have said, you'll probably be able to find EF-to-MFT adapters, though there are only a couple I know of that are electronic and those all require some sort of extra external power supply. If you're using a non-electronic one and you need to change the aperture, you'll need to remove the lens, attach it to a Canon camera, change the aperture there, then, while holding the depth-of-field preview button, remove the lens and re-attach it to the MFT camera (either that or just always shoot wide open). Lens mount adapters in general, as long as they're well-made, do maintain the optical quality of lenses in their center. Towards the edges, there'll be a decent drop-off in quality, though since the GH4's sensor is smaller than the 60D's sensor, I'd imagine the edges of the lens' image circle would be less of an issue. Metabones does make Speed Boosters for MFT cameras, but not for Canon EF lenses -- not yet anyway. They do make one for Nikon F lenses, though. Panasonic's GH line has been decent for stills, but your 60D will probably still be better overall for photography than any of them. Low-light might be the only area where the GH4 would win out, and even then not by much. On the other hand, the GH cameras have usually been superior for video.
Best video I have seen on this camera. Just bought ours yesterday to add 4K capability to our travel TV show. Used this video to set up the camera just like you did. Thanks...great job..
Jeremy Foster go to setup- monitor display- and then adjust from there. also keep in mind that the perceived brightness if your footage on screen will change based on your shooting environment. ie footage may look bright on the lcd if you are filming at night, and darknim the lcd if you are filming in bright sun. so use waveform or other methods to check exposure reliably.
Best. Tutorial. Ever. All killer no filler!! I love how you stayed on topic but it still felt like a conversation and not regurgitating a textbook. Bravo!
Probably the most useful video I've watched on youtube in weeks. I never even knew about the Cinema 24p setting and so many other things on the camera. Its like having a whole new camera now. Thanks for sharing this info :)
Griffin, you are just incredibly gifted at showing others how to do it! This tutorial was a lifesaver. I'm a HS Video teacher so I should know! Keep up the good work!
Leopold, I can't reply directly-your G+ profile may not have replies enabled. The noise level appears the same when adjusting highlights/shadows/master pedestal. Yes, you can shoot 4K in 30 or 24fps. Personally, I wouldn't want my final video to look like Cinelike D, but it is a decent option for color grading. You might check out the new V-Log profile Panasonic is releasing for the GH4 in October-designed for optimum dynamic range and color grading. I often aim to have voice bounce around -6db.
Your awesome. I actually saw this a year ago, but I wanted to at least NOW let you know thanks for posting this. Made my life with this camera so much easier..
on my panasonic camera i put in a sd adapter and record then put the sd in my phone but in my phone the videos dont have volume how do i fix please help.

I just bought a GH4 and this video was SUPERB for me to start using it. Thanks a lot Griffin.
dawhitecastle I preordered it through B&H the day preorders went live almost 2 months ago. The image quality is an immediately noticable improvement over my GH2. Messed around with the slowmo feature a bit, lots of fun.
***** Ive had this now for a couple of months...almost, been loving it. Did a couple of work projects and a few other test vids. Great camera, you will love it!
dawhitecastle I'm loving mine as well. The only complaint people tend to have is the sensor size which increases the depth of field, but I find that with fast glass you can get great depth of field. I use it mostly for video so I really want anything BUT that 5D look.
Thank you so much for this video. I've rented the GH4 a dozen or so times and I watch this video every time so make sure it's setup properly. Very helpful!
I LOVE the GH4, but for anyone looking to use it for photography purposes It's ill-advised. I'm a photographer/videographer... while the GH4 produces "Really Good" images... it just doesn't cut it as a pro stills camera.. I sold my gh4 and went with a 5D MarkIII | 50mm 1.2
*_GRIFFIN HAMMOND GH4 SETTINGS CHECKLIST_* I liked this video as a good start for a GH4 checklist. So I wrote down all the settings Griffin made. If anyone would like a copy of it, just go to this link: docs.google.com/document/d/17-l77CPDvFa9H7HT_w-roWapFG_7monw3siB9M-DZd8/edit?usp=sharing
I have a GH3 and I just picked up a GH4. This video was very helpful getting me oriented as I have a job for this in a couple of days. Gerry in Calgary.
Thanks so much Griffin, very helpful. I am have been looking for the right system for awhile and have narrow it down to this camera. I am just starting in video. Have been a commerical photographer for over 35 years and this looks fun. thanks
Fantastic informative video, no bullshit, no having to read manuals ... I literally just got my GH4 and never used a Panasonic in my life (always been a Sony guy). And your video got me up and running within 15mins.
Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial! I just got my GH4 and got really exasperated with the manual. You made it really easy to understand the camera in a short amount of time.
This is hands down one of the best, and certainly the most actionable tutorial I have watched for any camera. Good job outta you! Is the link below and affiliate link? You should get the credit for making the sale!
Hey, Griffin! Great video! I just ran across your channel. I just now picked up the GH4 (I know...a little behind), but your video was really easy to follow. I appreciate you making this! Subscribed.
Thank You for your tutorial. I am just beginning the process of video production on my new GH4. This was a very helpful way of getting acquainted with some the features. I will look forward to any of your future installments.
Thank you so much for making this video! It is way more pleasant to learn from than the manual. I got my GH4 today. It is the very first professional camera I've ever owned so I wasn't sure how to use it at all. Now I get a better sense of this camera after watching this video! Thanks again! :)
One of the greatest instruction videos ever on youtube. Helped me a LOT thanks! Just a pity the GH4 doesnt have profiles as you can set this camera up in so many ways, and it would have been nice to switch from Cinema setup to something else by just selecting a profile. I have been a Canon user for decades and recently Black Magic, and I must say since the GH4 came out, I was blown away by Panasonic cameras. It is the ONE camera that does almost everything right. Amazing! Sooo much easier to use than my black magic cameras, but the magics have superior well-depth so they go nowhere. Panasonics now replaces my Canons.
Just bought this camera today, first time not on a canon so it was pretty confusing to navigate the menus. This helped me out so much and I also couldn't figure out why my lcd kept going black! Thank you for showing how to turn off the sensor :)
Big Question - whats about a ISO Limiter and why is not avaible in Video mode? In Manual mode avaible but there you have just FullHD and no CineD. My version of firmware 2.3, did newer wersion have ISO limiter for Video Mode?
This is such a useful guide thank you. Even after all these years. Just picked up a GH4R - a steal with grip and only 67 shutter Activations as a back up to my GH5S for streaming and this has me up and running without having to work out what is in and is not compared to my knowledge of the later camera.
Great video! Thanks so much! I have a tip for the irritating eye-sensor. If you press the Fn5 button (for the Live View) on the left, it'll cycle between three different modes. First is normal, where the eye sensor works, second only displays it on the screen and the last only on the EVF, pretty neat! I discovered it on accident, hope it helps!
I am a complete beginner and your videos are very helpful. I am shooting a lot of selfie clips and have a hard time getting a clear focus. I saw others with the same issue but have yet found a clear solution, although I am sure I can find one. I figured I shell ask the question here. Thanks in advance.
Amazing review. I was hearing about all the features of the GH4 and felt like I had to read a whole book to know what to do, but your tutorial really makes me feel I know the camera already!
just about to buy one of these cameras, using a Canon 5D right now but we have been wanting to move into 4K for a few months now. Not to show our stuff in 4K but to be able to crop into the image without loosing quality. thanks for this great video, you have a new subscriber, cheers, Mark
Thanks for a really helpful video, you answered many things that were bugging me. I have only had this camera a few days, I have always been a Sony man but this camera is awesome. Once again, many thanks.
Perfect - just what I was looking for. Great orientation to a new camera for experienced photo/videgraphers. You got right to the features we need to access. Efficient and well produced. Thank you!
Great tutorial, because it was clear, concise, and just got to the meat of things.I'm going to go check out this gear and see when I can purchase it.I first saw it used in a video from someone outside, and it was awesome.
Thanks greatly. You've streamlined my setup process for video with the GH4. For those using the camera for stills as well, it seems the settings once set in video do not hold when the selector is on "photo" and the video record button is pressed to record. The selector needs to be placed in "movie". Thanks again. Subscribed.
Thank you! This was a most amazing and informative video. I have yet to get my GH4 but it is one of ...if not the main camera I've been wanting for sometime. I plan to get by the summer or early Fall. I had thought about the GH5 but through research it seems that there has been more use and info on the GH4. Main use will be for videography/film with some photography as well. Excellent points you made and also very clear with visual examples. Too often some presenters run very fast or don't take the time to show the process. You video and presence are superb, professional, fun and very personable. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge in such an amazing way!

Just purchased me a brand new GH4 and your video here is GREAT. Really helping me get a jump start... THANKS a Million
Still rock'n my GH4's in 2020.
Do you have any suggestions on what kind of mic I should get for this camera?

Awesome Video! Thank you for taking so much time explaining the most important functions! You are a pleasure to lesson to and a very good instructor!
Hi chef didn’t expect to see you here!
yup since 2014 Every time I mess up my settings I've come back to this video. god send!
Perfect! Thanks a ton, I was going crazy trying to figure this thing out.

Wow, I did not think that you would answer. But thank you! :) I appreciate a lot.
Nice to see all the extra video options over the GH3. I will stick to my GH3 and first buildup a nice set of lenses and other gear before going 4k.
Good call!
Seriously...one of the best camera demos I have EVER seen.... Don't even need the manual now LOL
Got any GH4 questions? I'm happy to answer them!
How do you like the screen? It doesn't look that good but still i'm looking at it from the camera and then through my screen so it's not fair to make assumptions.
I want to see some low light 4k test footage.
Ricardo Reyes, I think the LCD is great! The viewfinder is actually higher resolution than the LCD, but that's not how I shoot.
mbickerdike17, In my soon-to-be-released comparison video, I shot some high ISO side-by-side footage to compare against the GH3. I thought the GH3 was good at high ISOs; the GH4 is even better.
Griffin Hammond I'd really like to see, how good the Focus-peaking works, especially with vintage lenses and modern lenses in comparison.
Just received my Panasonic GH4 from B & H in the mail today. Could not wait to watch your video to set her up.. Thanks for the tutorial..
Thanks, this will come in handy for me when I get mine.
Hi, i need some help. Today (dec 2020) at 689 U$ dollar wich one do you choice? GH4 (body only) G85 (kit lens)???? Please help.

I genuinely enjoy this video, its 2019 and im still using t3i and i dont know why im even watching this video lol
Buy a GH3.. they are cheap
Fantastic guide, i've been using the GH4 for a few months now without knowledge of many of these settings to optimize the shots! Thank you Griffin!
I'm not sure if they make electronic connecting adapters for Canon-to-Panasonic. Chances are, you can get a really cheap adapter ring, but then your lenses will be all-manual on the GH4.
Manual sucks. Griffin is the manual
SUPER HELPFUL! THANKS GRIFFIN! Love how you went through everything so quick, I learned so much in 15 minutes.
I'm a little behind on the times, but I just picked one of these babies up and this video was super helpful getting me started. Thanks!
Thanks Griffin I am shooting behind the scenes footage at the NFL parade in London tomorrow on the GH4, this video has been very useful.
One of the best video forever, no fat, all useful. thanks mate
You earned a subscription from how well you described this I'm getting one of these badass cameras tomorrow.
THANK YOU!
after all this time this video is still incredibly helpful thank you
Just bought this camera today, first time not on a canon so it was pretty confusing to navigate the menus. This helped me out so much and I also couldn't figure out why my lcd kept going black! Thank you for showing how to turn off the sensor :)
Brilliant tutorial ! I’ve had my GH4 for 1 year and I didn’t know all those settings. Thanks 🙏🏻.
I've had mine for about 2 months and so happy I stumbled on this video.
Big Question - whats about a ISO Limiter and why is not avaible in Video mode? In Manual mode avaible but there you have just FullHD and no CineD. My version of firmware 2.3, did newer wersion have ISO limiter for Video Mode?
Best tutorial I've seen, quick and to the point. Thank you
thanks Griffin, just sold my 5D mk 3 and bought a GH4 for the 4K, loving it. never owned a Lumix before and your video was very helpful
The most useful video I ever see about cameras. Thanks a lot.
Just got my GH4 and am so happy for this video :) Thank you
This is such a useful guide thank you. Even after all these years. Just picked up a GH4R - a steal with grip and only 67 shutter Activations as a back up to my GH5S for streaming and this has me up and running without having to work out what is in and is not compared to my knowledge of the later camera.
Great video. My Eye Sensor was driving me insane until you showed me how to turn it off. Subscribed
Just got my GH4 today--this was a HUGE help. Thank you!
I discovered it on accident, hope it helps!
many thanks, just bought a gh4, did what you suggest in the video, it's a real professional machine.
Again lots of useful information I didn't know even after 8 months using it. In my defence I can only say that I mostly use my GH4 for photography.
This video is what has helped me start my journey into film. Thank you Griffin Hammond.
I am a complete beginner and your videos are very helpful. I am shooting a lot of selfie clips and have a hard time getting a clear focus. I saw others with the same issue but have yet found a clear solution, although I am sure I can find one. I figured I shell ask the question here. Thanks in advance.
Thank you very much! I'm sure there is more to learn but as a first time GH4 user that gave me a great basic rundown of what is what.
Thanks Griffin. Only just got my GH4 today and now its setup for shooting! Great tute.
This is a wonderful tutorial!!! I just got my Panasonic GH4 and I feel so much more comfortable now. Thank you!
Thanks so much. I'm an indy film maker and have upgraded to the gh4. All set now thank you
Thanks for a really helpful video, you answered many things that were bugging me. I have only had this camera a few days, I have always been a Sony man but this camera is awesome. Once again, many thanks.
Perfect - just what I was looking for. Great orientation to a new camera for experienced photo/videgraphers. You got right to the features we need to access. Efficient and well produced. Thank you!
Thank you very much! The video is really helpful. I'm buying GH4 soon and will come back here if there any question. Thanks again!
Great tutorial, because it was clear, concise, and just got to the meat of things.I'm going to go check out this gear and see when I can purchase it.I first saw it used in a video from someone outside, and it was awesome.
Hi Hammond, I would like to know more about the right procedure for a time-lapse settings in GH4. Thanks for all your tips.
