This project took 5 hours to render in Final Cut on my maxed-out 2019 Macbook Pro with an eGPU (even though most of the footage is from our 4k Sony a7S III). The project size, with H.264 proxies, is 867GB. Otherwise, actually editing the 8k footage is fine since you're using proxies anyway, but it was slow-going since I needed to review the results in the original files to draw conclusions.
You didn't catch a huge difference in workflow. The Canon 10bit workflow is 4:2:2, the Sony offers 4:2:0. As 4:2:2 is not natively decodable by modern AMD/ Nvidia and Intel graphics chips there is a giant workflow difference. Canon 8k is an absolute PiTA to edit while the Sony footage is just fine on a modern PC with modern hardware. No proxies needed with the Sony
@Photo Bunny Well the M1 mac lacks the power and RAM for full 8k workflow with heavy grading etc... while it can play back 4:2:2 with ease. And a powerful mac or PC can handle 8k editing but not 8k decoding. The point is with the Sony you probably don't have to buy a new PC as even older PCs handle the 8k just fine. With the Canon you have to buy a new one (which more than nullifies the price difference) and probably a PC that doesn't even exist yet. AMD/Nvidia just released a new gen without 4:2:2 decoding. So it takes at least another two years before there is a GPU with hardware decoding. Two years is a long time. At that point the R5/A1 are probably outdated again anyway
@Photo Bunny Well this is another thing. If you just edit without a grade you cannot shoot 10bit on the Canon anyway. As 10bit is only available in combination with log, which means you have to grade your footage
Bro, great video and funny, but some serious issues with ur comparison... u should have done Sony a1 vs Komodo or c70... the price to device is way off here
@@MegaWeitzel get a better computer, or use proxy... this is not a pro for Sony... 4:2:0 does not beat 4:2:2 ☮️🙏
I'm holding out for 12k video so I can watch it on my 1080P TV.
Blackmagic has one :P
Lol 😂😆
@@AlexandreRacine not hybrid enough lmao
Watching in 360p here!
@@my21coronas I was mostly just listening and only occasionally glancing up, so I had it set to play in 240p, although even 144p would have sufficed. Sometimes I'll even use a browser plug-in that only streams the audio. I was anxious to see which 8K monitor they would use. Man, that 8K monitor on the back of the camera is fantastic! I need to get one of those cameras and watch all videos on the camera's screen.
Thanks guys!
It looked like this was fun to make and it's made it fun to watch too.
Great work!
The reviews end up being both entertaining and helpful! You two make me smile every time I watch these ‘friendly’ competitions, and in the end you get all of the important points across, which includes the real world analysis.
Both cameras appear very solid for both stills and video work. I need more money...
This was really a great video! I enjoyed it a lot...your interaction, naturality, interview-scenes....Really great quality folks! Regards from Sweden!
Chelsea needs to update her R5 firmware. Yesterday they released a new one that fixed the memory card issue where it stops the camera from working!
You both ROCK! Love watching your back-and-forths -- playful, and yet each of you brings both very salient and more subtle points that illustrate your knowledge of the subject matter. Thank you!
Y'all are bringing a whole new level of wholesomeness to camera reviews. Love you two. Also love the real world scenario references and specificity. Thank you!
That was a great video and lots of fun. You two are definitely entertainers in addition to being educators. Thanks for the amount of thought and effort you put into making these videos.
Another great video. That touch screen on the back of the Canon is no joke in terms of ease of use in the real world - I was just shooting with it this weekend. Very useful.
Absolutely it’s great. Especially when using different systems it takes longer to remember that muscle memory where is what. The touch screen slider just makes one less headache. Though, it seems not to like 1.2 as I shot by accident 1.4 thinking I went all the way left before auto.
Price should be 5 points lol. A large amount of features in the R5 barely come up short compared to the A1. When the R1 comes out, that will be a real competition.
I love the unique way you all provide information! You make it very enjoyable!
this is the best video you made this year!
I really really enjoyed it!
even tho I couldn't afford any of them but you guys are really really fun and lovely
Great video once again. Can you please tell me how long can the R5 shoot at 4k without overheating? Coz I am planning to get one and don't really need 8k.
Great comparison review! Thank you for sharing this!
Have been watching your videos for yrs now, Chelsea and Tony and, while I don't always agree with you, I do find your format entertaining and informative. While playing verbal volleyball with each other, I often get a smile on my face as you both keep score and rack up points, each trying to outdo the other with your respective and respectful commentary. Anyone can see, as they watch each and every video unfold, that you two are the perfect compliment to each other, even while listening to the "all in good fun", only slightly adversarial conflict brought to your subject at hand. Especially enjoy the fact that you both have embraced different paths, primarily Canon and Sony, giving us the pros and cons of each, not shy about it in either case. You have won me over.
7:50 HAHAHA you guys are brilliant!
Very entertaining video. I love the banter between you both. Also, good comparison between cameras.
Love this video format
So much fun
C-log 3 is available in firmware 1.3, great timing eh!
I was just gonna comment on that at see if they are going to amend the video with an update with the C-log 3 updated camera. Might as well adjust the sharpness he mentioned as well. Seems only fair.
Love you guys. Thanks for all the good info and tips. Paul
So glad you made this vid , got my popcorn ready!!
Great video, what lens did you use for Canon R5?
and what lens did you use for Sony A1?
I dont video so my knowledge is limited, Would canons new firmware they released this week change anything here ?
which camera and lens were used for "Summary"??? Thanks
Hi, did you use Raw here 2:19 then color grade?
A win for everyone. Just love the 8k on the r5. and now a firmware just dropped that include Canon log 3
This was funny as heck😂😂🤣, & also very informative and very useful - thank you.
Great video guys. Love the humour in it. You guys have some serious chemistry too!!!!
I couldn’t help think throughout the tests that the software limited 8k recording on the R5 is a HUUUUGE Limitation. Not only does it void any 8k recording but it renders the camera to being a very expensive doorstop….
On big productions you actually most likely to use cinema cameras and most of them have only a single card recording - Arri, Red, Sony, Blackmagic (there might be an ability to use 2 different media types at the same time but I never had to) only use one card, most of Canon C-series actually have redundant recording. But it mostly doesn’t matter because you do backups on set. Not ideal but I hope this year’s new Arri and Red cameras will have redundant recording feature.
Last year: we will work in 1080p from now on. This year: 8k is great!🤣🤣🤣
Might VmWare, with Windows, installed work on your MacBookPro for your Sony f/w updates?
Loved this video. More of this please!
great video; love the challenges; great to see how both of these cameras operate professional test.
Awesome video! Fun to watch and interesting :)
Thank you for a very good and entertaining video! There is a lot aliasing, especially on Tonys shirt. Is there no antialiasing during 8k recording? Or doesnt these cameras have such filters for better clarity in image?
I wore that shirt specifically for moire but didn't mention it because we didn't see any. YT does create moire when they scale the video to different resolutions, but I can't count that against either camera.
This was great. You two always make things fun but informative. I'm a videographer and my wife is a photographer. We were wondering about the Sony A1. Of course she was sold on the photo side of things, but I wasn't so sure. I'm coming from higher end cinema cameras, but alas with my aging back it is time to think smaller and lighter. I had previously seen some horrendous footage posted by other reviewers but the stuff you posted here looks excellent. Any way I could download some sample slog3 footage ungraded in 8k and 4k? I can't find any online anyplace. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing! And, thank you for not yelling at us! Sooo many camera reviewers feel like they have to yell to get their opinions heard. Thank you!!!
But what about the moire in video ..? Which one is best in moire Performance.. ?
Great couple with the great informative, enjoyable comparison video between R5 and A1. Thanks...
What about the weight and size of both setups.. Points for Sony?
Wonderful video! Outstanding quality!
in the LOW LIGHT situation in the car, you didn't specify what format you were using to get low noise. I know RAW usually carries a lot of noise usually, especially with the C200 etc, so what settings did you use for that scenario?
Did you update the camera before you making this video publicly I haven’t watched it yet I wouldn’t of posted it before testing out the new feature.
Just sent off another batch of bodies and lenses to KEH using the T&CSELL coupon. It is really easy to do. KEH has a dropdown for each manufacturer to designate what you are selling. Then they send a pdf of the shipping lable that the people at FedEx printout. I do pay FedEx for the box and packing.
Thanks, Tim!!
Chasing the best is a fool’s errand, since today’s best will be tomorrow’s also ran.
Then maybe don't watch gear review videos-?
It's not a matter of what's best. It's the fact that there are huge problems camera makers are actively solving. Rolling shutter is a problem. Banding is a problem. Autofocus unreliability is a problem. We're not debating luxury features like built in snapchat filters or Adobe Photoshop integrated into the camera back. They're issues preventing people from getting the shot.
You chase the best when you are about to blow 4K-10k in gear for the next 5 years of production work.
That's why we have a continuous flow of comparison videos. As things get better and better, we get to see which is the best available at any particular time.
That was thoroughly entertaining. Thank you for this video.
How meny people have 4 & 8k monitors, do we really need these cameras. I still shoot with a Sony A7r2, Leica Q and M6 and cant see me upgrading any time soon.
T&C, you are the best (and I’m not in the market for a video camera)!! Thank you again!!!
_superb stuff…and, most importantly, that authentic touch of humour!_
R5 with the new 1.3 firmware? CLOG3, raw light in 8k... i don't shoot it but I just wonder if that changes the result? Also A1 pricing, might be a comparison to rumored R5c.
Can't you use your mobile phone to download the firmware onto an SD card and then placed SD card into your camera ?
Love your reviews, very competitive
Can you please do a tutorial showing your A1 settings and colograding for these shots? Please!
Best video so far. I love the theme and simulation. As they say in Ancient Aliens, "You have to ask yourself: Were aliens involved in the production of this video?" LOL
Hi, I am a new Sony Alpha 1 user and I have noticed that my new Sony Alpha 1 machine has been slightly hot for three minutes while I was adjusting the menus. As I continued to adjust the menu, I felt the Sony Alpha 1 inside my hand getting noticeably hot when I adjusted it for ten minutes.
It’s normal for the camera to get warm like that while browsing the menus for a while. Change the temp to “high” and you’re good regarding any shutdown issues generally speaking. It gets warmer quicker shooting 8k. Also, if you want to shoot basically “unlimited” 8k or reduce heat get the Sony battery grip and pull the lcd away from the camera. The majority of the heat is coming from the battery and with the lcd flush on the body.
Super comprehensive review /comparison.
So I’m getting ready to switch to mirror less and I’ve been shooting with Nikon D750 and I really like the canon r5 so please keep up the videos on the r5 I’m just
About sold thanks Chelsea
One area I did not see you address is post-processing and post-editing footage. I feel the codecs on the A1 are much easier on computers than the R5. Also, file sizes are typically smaller saving hard drive space.
Chelsea: Did you put in the Wilhelm Scream again?
Tony: Ah..maybe
Me: yessss
I keep refreshing to see the competing likes and dislike counts.. 😅😂
ok... the likes are crushing it
It's almost like people dislike without watching when it's uploaded 🤣
Lol Nikon rumors loves when the Northrups upload a new video just to come dislike it.
I‘m so looking forward to the R5C vs A1 comparison.
It’s gonna be a lot closer it seems
Love you guys!
My mom just bought me a canon Rebel t7 and oh my god the photos it takes
Buy a proper Speedlight, you'll love it.
It’s not the camera that takes good pictures, it´s you.
Awesome,great work,great channel.
How about canon firmware 1.3 and Clog3 support 🤔
Chelsea stole it for me Tony I'm sorry! Great video again and love your style and content. Both amazing camera's but the A1 feels pricey for what you get over the R5. Depends on what features are important to you though, two card slot recording is probably the biggest for videographers, this should definitely be changed in the next firmware update along with the record limit which makes no sense at. However with a Ninja V external recorder, both are not an issue which you can easily afford with the price difference and still have nearly $2000 change! The Ibis in the Canon is better, as is the screen functionality and the ability to flip it forward. So overall the few shortcomings of the Canon look easy to rectify for videographers, plus the 8k Raw benefit means the Sony is struggling to justify its price in my view as the stills capability is no better than on par with the Canon at best. The new R1 will probably cruise by the A1 but I suspect it will be more expensive.
Great Video Guys!!!!!!!!! Use C Log 3 Next Please!
WTF, where's the rest of the Chelsea alien interview? LOL
whats the name of the song?
Thank you for the video! Tony, you must be so proud of your daughter Chelsea. She´s a gifted videographer.
you guys are awesome! keep it on! :)
Tony just reminded me about his .net security books from the early 2000s.
I primarily record 4K DCI at 60fps to a Ninja V+(8K@30fps is supported).
Really great video, one of your funniest. I think the real winner is the a7siii because this video looked fantastic
Wow, thanks! Yeah the a7S III has become a workhorse for us. It just delivers... EXCEPT the autoexposure is TERRIBLE! It wavers all over the place. Watch the background in this video; as Chelsea turns her face away from the camera the exposure will change.
Personally I thought it was the least favorable of the bunch because it looked a bit washed out and slightly overexposed.
I didn't find a firmware update for the α1 but Sony's firmware updates for other cameras have versions available for Macs.
When using RAW or RAW Light on the R5, it is possible to create a proxy which can also work as a backup.
Yeah, though a proxy isn't a backup. You give up all the raw goodness and the resolution, and if you didn't need those raw features, you definitely wouldn't be filming in that incredibly inefficient format in the first place.
Maybe the rate of corrupted file happening increases when recording to 2 cards at the same time....? definitely feels that way when technology tries to do multiple things at the sametime instead of just 1 thing..
I think you could argue 2 cards = twice the probability of ONE card corrupting, but half the chance losing a video overall.
Great video
Great video !!!
Its awesome !! Which camera is your favourite?
This was actually one of my favorite videos because it was very comical plus an objective evaluation of both cameras. One question: Tony, why are you having so many corrupt memory cards? And Chelsea, in her recent review of the Canon R5, spoke about an issue with the camera not recognizing the SD card. I’ve never experienced a problem with an XQD card with my Nikon Z7 II, nor have I had any problems with the second SD card.
Tony, you keep talking about the camera shutting off at the 30-minute mark. I've heard the opposite from your friend Jared, among other folks. Jared has mounted a small fan under his R5 on the same tripod and is able to record indefinitely. Do I have this right? Please check with him.
I have no problem updating my firmware with my Mac...Not sure what Tony is talking about there. 🤷♂️
I think the real deal breaker for me comes down to redundant video recording. The fact that the Canon cannot record video to both cards makes the Sony more appealing. The next step for all camera companies would be to record two different video profiles to separate cards. Example - Shooting S-Log to one card and S-Cinetone to the other card. So you have the fast turn around material and a Log backup for more grading options if needed or in the future.
I've had Canon 70D, 80D, 2x 7DII, 5DIII and 5DIV for the past 5 years, I've had only one time when my SD card corrupt and I was able to retrieve most of the content (not all). I don't even remember the last time I used duo cards to record anything. So yeah, it's true that it's a nightmare when a card corrupt but I believe it's not something that happen every day (or every month, or for my case every year). It will be hard for me to make a buying decision purely based on it's ability to record in dual card. At the same time I respect those who base solely on card slot to make a purchase.
@@JonathanSeni If other peoples livelihood as well as your own career depend on it then it matters. If you can afford the risk then take it. I would totally shoot a camera with one card slot for certain projects but for the big stuff having the redundancy provides at the very least a little peace of mind. So far I've only had one situation where recording video to both cards saved me but it would of been disastrous if I didn't have a backup
Thanks for the interview tips! xD
So happy that this videos isn't talking about square space
Canon really needs to "allow" us to write video to both card slots. I've been wanting this since the 5D Mk3.
I wonder if it's something that can be done with a simple firmware update?
Just like all the other videos comparing the A1 to the R5 but failing to recognise that yes, the R5 is the only viable camera available to compare to the A1 but in reality it's £2500 cheaper so not in the same category, or is it? Maybe it's a viable comparison but when the cost is acknowledged it becomes a better proposition as are the A1 highlights & negatives really worth the extra cash? I suppose it is all down to how deep your pockets are and if you want value for money?
Tony and Chelsea, please review Canon R5 firmware update 1.3 CLOG 3
Does the a1 not have access to the usage of their Gyro Stabilization? Sony's Catalyst Browse makes it VERY usable for handheld shots, and would beat Canon in stabilization (sure it's another step, but it's pretty impressive nonetheless)
Chelsea's eyes in 8k: wow :) Great, fun to watch video!
Canon updated the R5 so you can copy settings from camera to camera!
Thats really cool!
With sony you can do it since years...
@@LucaViolaTorino yet that matters not one bit.
really funny! loved it! thank you! :-)
Tony’s next video: iPhone 12 annihilates the R5 when shooting videos. 😅😂🤣
This was really excellent show. You both look lovely.
You guys are hilarious😂. Right on
Sony and Canon come out with 8k mirrorless cameras and I'm sitting around with my GH5 I bought back in summer (I'm thinking I might buy a 2nd GH5 though after I saw the interview at 1:28)
Good choice
why pick your favourite Id like to have both ;D i enjoy this video alot well done :)
Is Tony 6 foot 9 inches?
A tool that overheats and doesn't have redundancy is a nono for both enthusiasts and more serious work.
