    Thanks Gordon. Great video. Lots of work put into that vid, very much appreciated! I went ahead and purchased the R5 after long research time. It suits me perfectly. I either shoot short duration macro video (the 8K raw is absolutely killer for that), or stills for weddings and such. For me it's an absolutely game changer. Thanks for your fantastic video information along the way, as it really helped in making my final decision.

    I've been watching videos about the R5 for days, comparing it with the Sony A7siii ... and none have been as complete and objective as this one. It surprises me that I don't have any more "likes", it has everything I needed to hear, not only the good and much less only the bad and the emphasis on overheating that seems to be the only characteristic of this camera that I think has more good things how bad. The problem of overheating, for me that I live in the Caribbean could be a problem because heat is a problem all the time, but I think I can manage it if I can get my hands on an R5. Lots of work and knowledge put into a single youtube video, thank you very much for your time. Greetings from Cuba.

    Very thorough and easy to follow. Thank you Sir. I have the R5 and C70. I'm a fan of both. I don't have any issues turning off the camera between shots. If it had a log boot time I'd not be happy but I've got 3 seconds to spare... and the image is stellar.

    This is probably the only and most detailed review of the Canon R5 you'll find on RUclips. I have been skeptical of upgrading to R5 ever since it launched, and after watching this video, I still don't regret my decision to wait until Canon fixes the only, but at the same time, most decisive issue (for me at least), since this ain't a cheap Camera. Thanks Gordon.

      Main issue I have is the lack of dynamic range compared to the competitors (not covered at all really in this video). Seen several tests of CL3 and it doesn't really add anything here and competitors have comfortably over a stop more DR.

    • @smaakjeks
      @smaakjeks 3 года назад

      @@FantabMedia So, that's less than 10% difference in DR. Just to put that into perspective.

    • @FantabMedia
      @FantabMedia 3 года назад +2

      @@smaakjeks Hi mate. No it's over double the DR, not 10%. Each stop of DR is a doubling of values and it's closer to 2 stops less (4 times less) than some other cameras. It's a huge difference.

    • @smaakjeks
      @smaakjeks 3 года назад

      @@FantabMedia One stop translates to one doubling of light. However, it's not a logarithmic scale such that from 10 to 11 stops you double the information. I know I can't tell the difference between an 11 stop and a 14 stop camera in an average picture. Try a double-blind test and see if you can. Or do the same with video, since that's what we're talking about.
      In a side-by-side, maybe you can tell the difference, but I'm talking assorted scenes.

    I am a diehard Sony user and just keep a little perspective remember this is Canon's second go around in the mirrorless FF market, compare that to Sony's 2nd attempt the A7ii. This R5 is one of the best all around cameras on the market, period. It really wasn't until the 3rd generation that Sony worked out most of its issues, and now in its 4th gen they have hit their stride, criticism is fair but there are many people producing beautiful images with the R5, so remember why we do this✌

      I totally agree on this one yeah it is second generation/1st generation because personally I think R designed as a test model but also as a R8 when people complain about overheating they forget about Sony is overheating problem they had in the past I bet Canon learn their lesson this time and the next cameras they come out will not have this problem. There’s multiple departments that are handling this camera when it’s been designed too. At least with software updates and Working with ninja recorders improving the camera.

      @dyrogfugleliv6278 3 года назад +5

      It's not Canons first or second try at anything. They know how to build a camera and when they know the benchmark it's up to Canon to release or not release a model depending on how good they are compared with the competition. Let's be honest. The R could have been desingned as a better camera when first released but that was probably some years ahead. Thinking about the leak to other camera manufacturers the needed to enter the marked with a mirrorless- fast, and the R is were they where at the moment of release. The lack of dual cards is not accidental, neither the time limit on video. This is so thoroughly planned but the customer seems to excuse the company for their "first try". Canon is not a bullied kid that needs protection or to be excused for it's flaws when the flaws are carefully planned not to be to competetive towards own Canon models.

      @@dyrogfugleliv6278 it is their 2nd gen FF mirrorless.... I don't know why you trying to trash Canon.... When there is also Nikon and Panasonic who have experience on mirrorless but still pull a FF that aren't competitive as Sony. Yet very few people bash them.

    • @dyrogfugleliv6278
      @dyrogfugleliv6278 3 года назад

      @@zegzbrutal It's probably because Canon sticks their head out more and for years had a leading role as a camera manufaturer. Nikon is struggling keeping up with the two in front with their autofocus - true, but they are not sticking their head out either. Not trying to trash Canon and don't know why your need to defend a company that so deliberatly and calculated know what they are doing. Canon is aided by people that defend them no mather what they do or don't. That does not benefit the customer in the long run.

    The Alpha 1 4:2:0 set me back at the additional price because it does limit some FX in video. The limitation is the card Sony has chosen which cannot support the higher bitrates. Canon’s choice is curious in design in overheating prevention, but we’ll see which cameras hold up over time. I suspect keeping price lower on R5 and 8K with higher quality required compromises. In video field production we have equipped FX-6 crews and C-70 fast turn around, but I’m hoping for Ninja update that we can loop out from Canon making those cameras more versatile.

    As usual Gordon a very comprehensive review so well done must take a lot of prep work. As to the R5, amazing to think that it is already a year since it came out and from your observations, it must be a no brainer to buy an external recorder if video is your thing or, just a different camera. I am a stills photographer mainly but have started working on some short films of late using a Canon M6 MkII and have found it better to use an external 5.5" screen rather than the flip up one on the camera plus a lot of tripod use ! I do find that although way outside of my budget, the amount of technology all these big brands cram into their expensive cameras quite amazing and it is really quite marginal which model/brand you buy into, you would be really hard put to buy a truly awful one these days :)

    Have you or anyone else have issues with files not recording all in 4k? I have my r5 set up with custom modes the main one being 4k 30 fps, 1/60, 400 iso CLOG. I primarily shoot that way for vlogs, but some times it randomly decided to produce files that are basically 1080p and not in CLOG ? And I'm not sure why it does that cause it would really just be a random file out of a set of files shot.

    As a wildlife 'tog, who only needs to do video work occasionally, without the burden of clients to please, I find the highly competent 4k crop mode (downsampled from 5.1k) wonderful. It looks nearly as good as 4kHQ and offers zero overheating. Sadly, the few reviewers who even bother to test it only give it a couple of seconds of screen time. I do wish someone would bang on that mode a little harder. For the money, the r5 is simply perfect for me.

Only surprise is not including the workarounds to the cameras overheating problems which now, a year later, we know the answers to: a) turn off the LCD screen when you record which lends itself to the external recorder/ninja products b) install a copper plate inside and there are companies you can pay to have this done, albeit at the cost of your warranty. That said, I find the R5 incredibly annoying when using a Ninja as there is no way to stop the menu from appearing on the ninja, so if the monitor is off to the side, or you are self taping with monitor pointed toward you, it makes it very difficult to use the menu without having to turn the monitor around again. I wish there was a way to force the menu to stay on the flip screen. I have not tried a wireless monitor, but it seems that would make things even more difficult if the camera pushes the menu through HDMI as the only option.

To avoid choppy motion, remember to use shutter speeds no more than 2x your video frame rate.
