Great video. RE dynamic range: it's become clear that Canon hasn't moved beyond using a 12 bit A/D conversion in video mode. Canon Log 3 can encode roughly 14 stops if you have it to encode. One thing I do like about the Canon's is the body ergonomics - the curves feel more natural in the hand. I've used a Sony A7II and A7III from an employer, and it feels more like taking pictures/video with a brick in the hand. Also Sony's meter display threw me off a bit, because I was so used to that horizontal graph showing the "needle" moving left and right to show if my exposure is correct. To me, that's a more tactile way to show *how* "off" or "on" the exposure is rather than just some numbers changing, and I'm glad Canon kept the real meter look. Now if either mfr. could include shutter angle and waveform/vectorscope like Panasonic/LUMIX...but I'm leaning away from them b/c of the lack of lens selection and b/c their phase detect autofocus is still in its infancy, and their burst rate is nothing to write home about.
Great video as usual! As a new Canadian RUclipsr, I’m always looking to more experienced RUclipsrs, especially Canadian ones, for tips, tricks, and new techniques to raise my game. yeah this is what gerald referred to, this method is ancient and bad. even 90s ENG cameras can white balance with a press of a button but none of canons photo bodies can

Honestly... I don't know a single fimmaker/cinematographer who shoots 4K/60p, let alone to do it for more than 5 minutes per clip/scene... 90% of scenes/clips are approx 30seconds to 3 minutes long. Close to nobody will ever shoot longer than that per clip/scene. The only people who would do so are people who buy a camera for a hobby or amateurs, so let's be honest and non-PC here; all these complaints about overheating after an hour of filming and about 30minute restrictions are completely idiotic.
Hi Gerald, thanks for reviewing this camera. I notice in the dynamic range test, the Xyla patches appears to be reddish in comparison with test of other cameras. Besides, the imatest noise plot also shows that the red channel has much higher magnitude compared with other channcels. This is also not the case for other cameras where R G B Y have similar magnitude. I wonder why does it show up like this? Is this an experimental error? Does it affect dynamic range test results? Thanks.
Hi Gerald, Good review as always. If the R6m2 is like the R5, when you open the memory door, there is a small hole there. The hack to keep the camera on is to put a small grommet inside it to trick it to think the door is closed and then you can hot swap the memory cards. I found this hack when I tried to use a dummy CF express and had to keep the door open. Was trying to figure out how to remove all variables that could make the R5 overheat. Give it a try!
@@kapilesh14 not quite entirely. That’s why I think it’s best to keep my R6s for photo. My videographer might benefit from no record limits nor overheating as we shoot weddings together.
Thanks Gerald! How do you feel about the R6 II compared to the Lumix S5? Overall thoughts (minus the Autofocus comparison, of course. We all know who wins there)
S5 is more feature rich and has better dynamic range, but the recording limit and crop in 4K60 hurt it. The R6 Mark II has better rolling shutter performance as well. But I'd rather work with V-Log than C-Log3.
What's the point of Sony supporting third party lenses if the cameras can't even output proper colors? After my a7iii a7riv and a1 i went to canon and is so great. finally perfect colors and less work
Correct me if im wrong, if you do videos predominantly and if you got the original R6 with an Atomos Ninja, there's very little reason to upgrade, unless you want a smaller footprint? The Ninja removes the record limit and overheating is greatly improved, as well as giving you the false colours, all the things which seems to be the selling points for the mark ii. Sure you get 6k raw over hdmi, but then you'll need an external recorder anyway, which is not what im comparing, R6+Atomos vs R6ii
Five main reasons: 1. Better crop mode, 2. Focus breathing compensation, 3. USB-C streaming, 4. Removes overheating issues for internal recording, and 5. The mode dial settings can all be used for video now. Video quality in lab testing won't improve, but usability is much improved.
@@velvetsound Supposedly Atomos will be releasing a firmware in Jan.-Feb. 2023 to allow that on the r6 mk ii and supposedly on the regular Ninja V as well. We’ll see…hopefully that’s the case😊

I’ve been a huge Canon fan for years-I’ve shot nothing but Canon cameras for close to twenty years. But with Canon’s recent announcement that they won’t be allowing third-party lenses for their RF mount, I just can’t see Canon going anywhere but downhill from here. And I take no joy in saying this, but I gotta concede that I’ll probably be going with Sony for my next camera body.
I think its due to Canon not wanting to lose money on their own RF lenses. Unlike Sony, they can't afford to lose money on photography equipment. Canon's RF glasses are really nice but super pricey. Same with Sony's G-Master lineup as well but Sigma, Tamron and Rokinon all come in to produce affordable lenses that gives us so much options. Yea, their autofocus is slower and their weight is heavier or plastic is used rather than metal, but being $1,000 cheaper is totally worth it. Since Canon won't open up their RF mount anytime soon, I do see people jumping ship to Sony for the lenses alone.
It makes zero sense for Canon to allow some other company to eat their dog food in a contracting market. That is why Canon makes some good and affordable STM RF glass and as Gerald said for people like me that only buy 1st party glass auto focus glass this is a non issue. I do love all the Manual cinema glass that is being produced for the RF mount! Fun Fact - Canon have announced nothing about not allowing 3rd party glass. That assumption was started based on the actions of Canon asking a Chinese lens cloner to stop making lenses that clearly infringe on at least part of their auto focus patent. The rest is just some youtubers using the odd battleground of Canon vs everyone else to try and generate views and likes. Cheers
@@harryvuemedia5106 The lesser priced RF glass is really nice, though. Sony needs the third-party lenses because they basically choose to not make any affordable first-party lenses. If you look at cheaper primes, Canon RF mount is actually better than E mount, even with third party lenses being available. I still wish that RF allowed third party, though, because third party zooms make E mount very useful for pros. I did switch to E mount last year and was surprised by how uncompetitive cheap E mount lenses are. There's absolutely nothing that can compete with the first-party RF 16mm, 24mm, and 35mm lenses, which I absolutely love. Will probably buy an R6 II to use with the cheap primes.
Also, Sony has some severe cripple hammering going on to protect their A1 and A9. My new A7R V tops out at 7 fps in electronic shutter and 10 fps in mechanical shutter. That's honestly laughable on a 2022 $3899 body. Switching to a Sony comes with its own regrets. They have six different FF lineups: a video body (A7S), a general-purpose body (A7), a high-res body (A7R), a flagship (A1), a compact (A7C) and a sport body (A9). In order to differentiate all these from each other, they seem to have a weird matrix of features that's available in one but not the other, yet they won't give all the features of the A7 IV via firmware to the A1 and A7S even when that would make them better. In 2022, it seems like Sony cripple hammers more than than Canon. I still like my Sony a lot, but I don't feel the need to defend them when I feel like Canon does a lot of things better.
@@Ramage7070 Okay, answer this question then. Why isn't Sigma and Tamron making RF lenses since Canon isn't holding any 3rd party back? And not everyone has money like you to buy a $3,000 lens or even $1,500 usd lens. Tamron and Sigma makes affordable lenses that are $800 and under. Not everyone who picks up a camera are going to be professionals and needs the top lenses. They just want affordable lenses that can get capture the images. Sony allowing 3rd parties to produce lenses for them allows more options of lenses to choose from. If someone can't afford a G-Master 24-70mm, then they have 2 options with them being Sigma and Tamron priced at $800. Rokinon, Sigma and Tamron all jumped on the E-mount as far back as 2016 when Sony's mirrorless cameras started getting very popular. They would have done the same thing to Canon's RF mount too but no, Canon shot them down.

I got the R6ii and love it for the battery-life, autofocus an ease of use - but I still wonder if I should get the R5C for it's 120p and better codec. And I struggle with the noise of the R6ii. Should I get the R5C or even wait for the R5ii which might unify both worlds? Anyway thank for you help
I would like to fix a serious bug that is very damaging to the hybrid stills and video mode, the timecode stops and does not advance when switching from video to photo mode! Even when timecode is set to camera clock time
Perhaps folks that shoot sports and moving wildlife, the faster Canon frame rate and the reduced rolling shutter might be an important factor in choosing between these systems. As you indicated both the Sony A7Mk4 and the Canon R6 Mk 2 are great cameras. To me the most important thought is that if you are already invested in an array of Sony or Canon glass, there is little justification to jumping systems these days.
This looks like a fantastic camera. Sadly, Canon actively preventing third party lenses coming to market has me looking to get rid of my R6 & EF glass, and move to Sony.
From what I understand with Cinema Gamut for Canon is that HDMI isn't fast enough to use Cinema Gamut. I wouild love to know if this is actually true. Thanks Gerald!

Don't forget that Sony 7 iv is more than ONE YEAR OLD, so it won't have more updates, instead Canon R6 Mii will have more than a couple of firmware during the year.
Holy noise when he switched! when I had an a6400 running 1080p slog3 8bit it had less noise than the m6ii X.x
I find myself getting more and more tempted to add the R62 to my bag... Christmas is coming!
Facts 💯
Its interesting to see that dynamic range of fuhi xH2 in non oversampled 4k is still better then the one in Canon R6 mark 2. Makes Fuji really not a bad choice now.
All cameras have their ups and downs. You have to try them to know if it's not your thing. Fuji still have issues...
The dynamic range of the xh2 is not really better…but canon made the choice to limited to clog3 which is more easy and faster to color grade. Don’t forget that after color grading, the final image DR will be around 9-10 stops even lower…

@@mostlymessingabout Ofcourse, I never claimed fuji cameras to be Perfect. For some, Canon will be the right tool for the job, for others - fuji.
I have nothing but continued appreciation for this channel. Been hoping for this video for a while, thanks Gerald!
Great review. Loved the vortex outro.
11:40-11:55 I have watched that portion of the video more times than I would like to admit 🤣🤣🤣
i don’t care much for Canon, but watching this because I miss Gerald’s geeky reviews.
Great video as usual! As a new Canadian RUclipsr, I’m always looking to more experienced RUclipsrs, especially Canadian ones, for tips, tricks, and new techniques to raise my game. I’ll have to try that Canon move vigourously shaking my camera left and right at 60 fps. Never thought of that one before! 😊
I actually liked the look more when he switched to the canon camera on himself rather than the sony. Definitely more pleasing to the eye. 10:04
As always, thanks for the clear and thoughtful reviews. Cheers!
Love your smolder at 7:08
I'm not the only one who noticed the hilarious look on Gerald's face at 7.09 when he alludes at questionable behaviour on our part that might take place in shadows, right? 😂😂🙏🙏
Amazing review - should I go with this for daily and travel vlogging or canon m6 mark ii?
You can set white balance by setting it in picture mode (take a picture) and then turning video mode and the custom white balance is there.
yeah this is what gerald referred to, this method is ancient and bad. even 90s ENG cameras can white balance with a press of a button but none of canons photo bodies can
@@yesthisisdonut Gerald referred that you have to take picture and then search it from menu. You don't have to go search picture from menu. You take it in picture mode and then go video mode.
Just bought it. Now i feel i have your blessing on the purchase, and as you are my most respected phototecyoutuber, i´m done. Currently i have a beautifull old canon 80d. Regards from Argentina!!!
The wobbly stuff is quite annoying if they could fix that the camera would near perfect
Absolutely love your reviews! Do you use a teleprompter, notes, or just... your brain?
It's been ages and I still can't get over the fact how good you look in short hair! weird, it is usually the other way around! Anyway, great vid
Thank you for the amazing audio quality 💜
Got one and is arriving today watching training videos 😊
They all great! There is no bad camera anymore
one of the best review i saw on the Canon R6 Mark II
The what you do in the shadows callout was super cyooot.
Thanks.
Micro HDMI annoys the hell outa me
But.. when it's back in stock.. I will own one
The Canon R6 mk ii footage at the end of the videos definitely looks better than the main cam that Getald uses which I think is Sony A7SIII.
Hi Gerald,
Good review as always.
Definitely getting this body for my wedding videographer. Probably sticking with the originals for photo though.
Hey Francis, you made a video on your channel about the irrelevance of upgrading to r6mii, have you changed your mind? 🙂
@@kapilesh14 not quite entirely. That’s why I think it’s best to keep my R6s for photo. My videographer might benefit from no record limits nor overheating as we shoot weddings together.
@@FranciscoAlvarezTV yeah, the recording limit thing is super fine. It's good that Canon really understood that finally.
@@kapilesh14 agreed.
Liked the canon color when you switched to film yourself. Awesome review too!
What baffles me is how manufacturers like Panasonic have no overheating issues, but other manufacturers have this issue.
It's so they can sell you newer models or higher end models. It's all about profits to them. Makes sense since they're a business.
Gerald is the Messi of youtube.
just came here to say i like the hoodie man! cool camera too
Lol that ending. The Gerald SIngularity due to " rolling shutter"
Pleased someone asked this, loving my S5. Picked it up as 1/3 of the price of the R6 new...
@@geraldundone Thanks Gerald! Waiting for you to review the S5 (or S1) sequel in a few months. It should address some of your concerns for sure :)
I like this lighting, the reduced fill light is flattering IMO
Loving your work :-)
That rolling shutter test at the end should be the new norm lmao..
Nice review, and EXCELLENT choice of music at the end... :)
Cannon Cripple Hammer (tm) strikes again.
For a second I thought you said:
“I’m Gerald Undone and it’s MooreBen time…” 😂
No interest in actually buying the thing, just love watching Gerald going into detail on it 🤘
Thanks for making the video, enjoyed it and you hit upon a lot of the points I look at when making decision about what camera to buy. Great!
11:46 was the best advice a filmmaker could get HJAHAHAAHAH
What's the point of Sony supporting third party lenses if the cameras can't even output proper colors? After my a7iii a7riv and a1 i went to canon and is so great. finally perfect colors and less work
Nice breakdown. Mine is scheduled to arrive tomorrow...moving up from the R and too invested in Canon lenses to change at this point.
I have this camera. It is really good. 40 FPS in elec shutter. Really helps
See my other comment but I can’t get 6K RAW with a Ninja V+ to work. Looks like a Canon bug.
@@velvetsound Supposedly Atomos will be releasing a firmware in Jan.-Feb. 2023 to allow that on the r6 mk ii and supposedly on the regular Ninja V as well. We’ll see…hopefully that’s the case😊
Loved the video!!! We are looking for a new run and gun camera for video work with great AF and IQ ... Would you recommend the a7IV, FX30 or the R6 II?
Wow the difference in camera @ 10:03 is drastic. Is there a different grade? Is that straight out of camera? or something else?
i watch maybe every canon eos r6 ii review avaliable in the youtube, but still ... its not enough if i'm not watch Gerald review ... and yeah i play in 75% speed
There was a small part in me that wished there'd've been a lil air biscuit in the noise floor pause for some reason. I'd have had a giggle.
Why the camera has no raw or all intra ? Does it make a huge impact when using the camera for professional video shoots?
First! :D Love your work Geralt!
Solid video. I am looking to buy a full frame camera and a welder soon, I find it very entertaining how stunningly good the production value is on the camera review videos and how filmed on an old cell phone leaned against a toolbox a lot of the welder videos are. You video was excellent and informative, I plan to pick up a A7 IV here in the next couple days. Very tempted by the Canon R6 ii but the native lens selection and extra resolution gave Sony the edge for me. Also first video of yours I have seen and I am subscribing now, tight dialog, informative and well edited.
Thanks for this Gerald mad me pleased I brought the R6 MKII to go with my R3 - do you know what the native ISO is on the R6 & R3 plus where can i get the LUT you mentioned for CLOG 3 - cheers Hieth
Knowing that youtube desaturates videos, your canon shots at the end must have had neon electric color saturation! I mean just look that those screw drivers in the back. lol Kidding aside great work man!
always good times when watching your videos ❤
Hello Geralds! As I adore your work I dare to ask you for help. I own a C70 and work for TV mostly.
Another great review Gerald. Now that the atomos came out with the update for r6 mark II 6k raw option, can you please make a video on it?
What camera are you using for youtube ? is it the same camera ?

Gerald: another great crazy amzaing best for video photo camera of all time
“I’m Gerald undone and sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken”
I like the music at the end.
You are my fav reviewer
Your final thoughts were on point 😅
No no no, focus on the photography side hahaha, btw if you want to use this Camera for just Photography, the R6 and R6 Mark II it's a great Camera IMO
From what I understand with Cinema Gamut for Canon is that HDMI isn't fast enough to use Cinema Gamut. I wouild love to know if this is actually true. Thanks Gerald!
