The 135mm, maybe. But the 24mm? Who IN THE BLUE HELL is using a 24mm lens for sports? But realistically, a sports photographer needs to be using whatever the best 70-200 is on their system. In the case of Sony that happens to be a slightly outdated lens. Hard to say. Here’s the case for A1: Advantage of A1 is its speed. It has more powerful processing, which means it is also more future-proof. There’s lot more chance that autofocus will get continuously updated. A7Riv might get replaced with A7Rv soon and iv will stop getting updated. Also, with SDK being opened up, there’s more chance A1 will get some computational photography upgrades. The A1 sensor might have advantages when taking pics of Aurora Borealis and Astrophotography. Sports and wildlife should also favor A1. 8k video is probably useless and shouldn’t be a deciding factor, but A1’s oversampling 4K video might be of interest. The $500 difference is nothing once you factor in lenses. Hope it helps.

"The A1 is the best sports camera, 30 FPS..." yet in the review, they showed that in real world, the A1 misses focus a lot, and doesn't get 30 FPS most of the time, often fewer than the R5 in fact. So that would make the R5 the best sport camera of all time.
@@KungPowEnterFist Spoken like someone who hasn't shot a Sony camera released in the last 4 years. The A9, A7 III, A7r III, a6400, etc. miss focus all the time...? Since when? So strange that people that actually shoot with Sony professionally don't seem to have this problem of constantly missing focus.
In terms of animal eye AF, I leave my A9 in either wide or expand flexible spot med tracking and my eye hit rate is almost 100%. It will first find the body, then head and then focus on eye very quickly. I'm sure the A1 would work even faster in these modes? I've even managed to get sharp focus on an animal in the brush with one eye obscured and sharp focus on the other eye.
David Pinkus. Me too. First shot of a fox sitting in the open and facing me. Locked on to the left eye immediately at 45 metres. Fox then sat behind a bush, partially obscuring the left eye. Most pro sport photographers shoot in jpeg so for them the extra 10fps should be very helpful. With that said. I certainly would like to see a proper detailed comparison between compressed and uncompressed raw. I did it myself with my a7r4 and was hard pressed to see a difference in Capture One so I now always shoot at compressed to save space.
Hmm, i'm not actually that convinced that Sony actually front focused on the first comparison. It seems to me like Sony shot simply has slightly deeper dof. It looks like that when you compare a spot that is slightly "deeper" in the photo than the eyeball, look at the conjunctiva on both shots, it looks pretty much in the same sharpness. Actually the Canon shot looks ever so slightly blurred, perhaps it is simply the motion blur. Also no shit that the photo was brighter, it was ISO 800 vs 400 :P But i guess you meant that the auto iso was better on Sony?
It does look like the Canon photo has motion blur. They said the difference in exposure is because of the automatic metering (did not specify whether that was Av, Tv, P, A or only auto-ISO), which Canon kept getting wrong. I'd like to know what metering mode each camera was in since I've ever found either Sony or Canon to struggle with backlighting + a dark subject when focus-linked spot metering is used.
Other reviewers are getting the same results with other lens combinations, and lots of people have been complaining that Sony front-focuses on eyes. Canon AF is just better now.

I like the video and the results. The discussion in the car was funny. And i was on Chelsea‘s side 😉 In minute 5:00 I think there is more white in the background at the Right picture, and because of that the canon‘s exposure is a bit darker. And on the other side in the Sony picture, pixel‘s head is bigger in frame. So the exposure becomes brighter. And i think Sony is able to bring back more highlights than canon. And that’s a reason for the little bit darker canon pictures too. I switched from Sony A9 and A7 III to the R5 and R6, and I’m still happy with that switch. I switched from Canon to Nikon a few years ago and was happy with the decision at the time. Let's be honest though, Canon is killing it now with the R5 and R6.
Well they are killing it with great but big heavy lenses . Compactness goes to Sony
Never underestimate the sensors of Sony (and Nikon). The original R is very poor in terms of sensor performance. I own one, it is not good. My 12 year old 5d mk 2 has a nicer quality.

The 70-200 GM can keep up - but he needs to use Wide AF area and set his shutter to Release under settings up achieve the 30 fps. :)

Agreed - why test the camera with a lens that is not capable??
The 135mm, maybe. But the 24mm? Who IN THE BLUE HELL is using a 24mm lens for sports?
But realistically, a sports photographer needs to be using whatever the best 70-200 is on their system. In the case of Sony that happens to be a slightly outdated lens. It's no good to a sports photographer saying something like "well the system was designed for newer lenses like the 24mm f/1.4" when they _need_ the 70-200.

In terms of animal eye AF, I leave my A9 in either wide or expand flexible spot med tracking and my eye hit rate is almost 100%.
I have been away from your channel for awhile, but you guys really continue to keep it fresh and interesting! Good work!
15:51 Jared from froknows photos hahaha
Can you go into s35 mode in 4k120???
I use it all the time on my a7iii, and need it to work the same way in the A1 in any 4k mode, especially 4k120
So all Tony can come up with is that the Sony has 30fps 😂
I'm interested in whether the firmware update made the eye auto focus better on the A1.
19.30 Its the best sports Camera ever made. Have you guys watched your own review yet. Camera that drops its frames is the best camera ever made . Slow Claps tony
What about the video part ?? And overheating comparisons? Cine-tone in the A1 ? Etc.....
Well at least I know Canon has caught up with Sony Autofocus, thats the only thing I needed to hear
*In conclusion:* The Sony 70-200mm is old and slow and Canon has a newer lens than Sony's.
The Sony 70-200 is also a POS. Mine misses a lot with A9 and A7r3. For video is is magic though. Portraits..............not so much.
Waw ... amazing review and huge efforts ... very much appreciated dear Tony and Chelsea
How you compare autofocus while using a f11 with the Canon..lol...also Sony has issues with the 85 mm
Shhh - don't point that out, makes the A1 look even worse.
That’s what makes it even more amazing ^^ the R5 is using a „cheap“ entry level ( or mobile version ) tele lens and performed better here.
Yeah. Pretty big difference. Crappy light and f/11 lens. Also the dog photo comparison. Not even same Framing or anything. Totally different perspective and distance. Can’t compare WB or Exposure. Is like saying a headshot doesn’t match full body shot of a person. Yeah... it’s going to expose and AWB totally different then.... lol.
@@Seitenwerk yeah...you should watch some good videos of Tony explaining depth of field so you can know why you are so wrong.
@@elgenizaro Except at long focal lengths the depth of field gets shallow enough to discern whether or not the plane of focus is where it should be, even at f/11. Arguably its a disadvantage for the Canon in this test, because it's losing 7/8th of the light compared to the f/4 on the Sony.
Is there an embargo on posting RAW files or something ? Seems odd that there appear no-one has posted any yet.
My bad I see there are some on dpreview - if you know where to look.
Very informative. Thank you! The A1 costs more than fifty percent more, but is still beaten soundly. Can you do video as well?
keep in mind the sony is not production model and it's near perfect. all the things that need tweaking is all software that can be updated with a firmware update
You are right. It’s applicable to the unbiased camera users. There are a lot of users come here just to see that A1 autofocus is inferior to R5. They are not interested about any wrong settings used or preproduction model infant AI algorithm that may be improved before delivery to customers or asap after delivery.
Hmm all the reviews seem to think this is production firmware and bodies. Sure there will be firmware updates after release but that is production hardware and firmware 1.0
@@Ramage7070 exactly! When they do release it with the tweAks from all this feedback they're getting...it will be even more beastly! Can't wait to see what this means for the other bodies Sony will release!
Try this again when the Sony has the Canon R1 pro sports camera as competition
But then the A2 will be out.
@@MuahMan nope :D r1 is comming out in next 6 months.
@@MuahMan we're talking about sony here...the company that took like 5 years to release the a7siii
8:30 the sony 'searches' a little more - what did you have the sensitivity at? Results can vary for different subjects if you're at 5, 3 or 1 (the latter called locked on).
What a surprise Canon users saying the Sony isn't good as Canon - who would have thought it - I agree with Gerald Undone - A1 is the best camera period - hope your R5 doesn't catch fire!
Tony doesn’t get paid by Sony to say things which others say . R5 has the best focus system and accuracy, no contest and end of the story
Great comparison video! Love your channel! Thanks you two! Cheers!
Can't wait for Canon to release a 1DX Mkiii mirrorless equivalent, i'm sure it's gonna be better than the A1
Agreed: that is the actual point ... this is the R5 not the future envisioned Canon R1 .. I can only image the specs on that beast in the same price range as the A1 with a much better lens mount already in play.
@@rossitervideos i agree, the R1 or whatever it will be called will definitely be better.
Tony talks like if the A1 blows the R5 out of the water, but in my opinion, for the price range the R5 is still a better option, he is always extremely bias, at least Chelsea is open minded.
Could someone help me out here?? If you watch the video at 12:20….Tony your saying when using the 30fps mode the crow looks blurry, isn’t that because your shutter speed is 1/250??? I can see the camera settings in the top left corner of the screen. Your shooting flying subject’s shouldn’t your shutter be at a minimum of 1/2000 and above???
"...or a panda." 20 point slap down for Chelsea. 😊
Great video guys! Thanks 🙏
For $6500 , R5 & R6 FTW.
A reasonable choice!
With what camera you guys shoot this video?
They were holding their breath. All they could say about the Sony is "higher frame rate." They were holding their breath 20:22. LOLOLOL
So, is overheating no longer an issue for the R5?
15:50 Wild 'Fro spotted!
And me spotted finally your comment about 'Fro. Almost did quit my search but this finding was huge Win for a J.P. fan like me! :D Also thinking editor of this video put that moment of the clip for reason XD
