Thank you so much for this thoughtful review of the Sony a1 Mark II. I think the Mark II will inspire the purchase of the original a1 at its newly reduced price. Current a1 owners won’t be flooding the market with their used version.
I have a Canon R5. If Sony ever comes out with an A7RVI, I will be one of the first ones to upgrade and buy it, selling off all my Canon gear. I am not a fan of "hybrid" cameras and am more photocentric than video. Image quality, high resolution for deep crops, low noise, and dynamic range are my drivers.
Yes, changing systems may help if you are familiar with a previous Sony system and find that you are still more comfortable with Sony after switching to Canon. It is very important to be comfortable with what you have rather than the features because you may regret buying a new system even though it has better features. Nowadays, camera capabilities are very similar unlike 4 years ago. I have a full frame Sony camera and I love it even though it does not have all the latest features and will not change it unless I am really dissatisfied with my photos independent of what all RUclipsrs reviews have to say because they are not you. In fact I bought an additional Sony APSC camera A6700 that make use of the same set of e-mount lens to have better reach for wildlife. Saved a ton of money and able to have 2 cameras at any one-time to capture opportunities. That is the good thing about Sony, because it saves you on the wide range of lens availability.
Best, most practical review I’ve seen. I own the A7RV and A1. I often end up shooting birds and wildlife when I am out on a landscape mission, or when I travel. The A1 is miles ahead of the A7RV for that use, but the A7RV has better landscape features. I already choose the A1 when I know I will be shooting both. Now that those landscape features are incorporated into the A1 II, I will be upgrading, and it is much less likely my A7RV will be in my bag. That said, I do see an appreciable difference with the A7RV when cropping.
I have owned the A1, sold it looking to buy the A1II in the future(now) . But Nah., the A7RV is all I need so i cancelled the pre-order of the A1II. Over half of the specs are firmware updates the A1 should have had.. Sony fanboi since 2010, but skipping this one.
Very disappointed, as a A1 owner in Sony. They crippled our camera with a lack of firmware support, once the a7IV debuted and withheld “Animal/Bird Eye Support in Video” and “Focus Breathing Comp”. They have still never provided us with Animal Eye tracking in Video, while the old a7C got that firmware update in 12/21. They will do the exact same thing with this body when the a7V debuts in 2025. I am not investing any further into Sony, as a Sony Pro Member, until I see that they change their firmware policy for the Flagship.
I don't even own an A1 (I shoot on an A7RIV) but I've watched Sony neglect the updates for their flagship and it sucks to see. I can understand not being able to implement the newer AI auto focus modes as they require their own onboard chip but things such as the focus breathing and even custom long exposure and focus stacking shouldn't have been that bad. While I'm not defending any of it, I have read that traditionally in Japan software engineering was seen as lesser than hardware engineering. I am purely speculating but I think we may be seeing the affects of that traditional cultural thinking where their focus is bringing new hardware, which makes sense as Sony will only make money on a new camera purchase there. If I was someone who used one of the Sony flagship cameras I'd be very upset, but as someone who doesn't I am relatively happy, though I do want to see the custom long exposure and focus bracketing brought down the line as I would use those features all the time.
@@Oakley5100 that’s a lie. Nikon & Canon provide tremendous firmware support for their flagship models for 2-3 years post-release. They are both Japanese as well. There is no excuse here other than Sony Corporate Greed
@@hikertrashfilms Which is completely fair. Again not disagreeing with you at all Sony needs to step up, just trying to offer a plausible explanation and fully admitting I'm not in the audience that would be affected by a lack of firmware updates. And to add more to your point, Sony recently put a firmware update to the A7RV that added some extra features and it was bricking cameras.... so even when Sony does do a good thing with releasing new firmware they mess up the implementation tremendously.
Now, this is what I call a very informative review, you are talking features that are meaningful to make a decision earlier, other your tubers, are just reiterating the obvious without too much meat . Well done !!!, I really enjoy your videos and your enthusiasm for landscape photography, this is what I want to do when I retire.......BTW. that is your favorite lens now for landscape ?, at one point you were using the Tamron 28-200???
Hi Mads, as always a great video but I hope my thoughts below give a wider perspective. A thought to Sony; I am an A1 owner who suffers from GAS, can afford to up grade and would normally do exactly that but this is my thought process. Trade in my A1 for a new one, likely cost $4.5K, or keep my A1 and buy the Nikon Z8 and potentially migrate to N-Raw, ProRes Raw, 8K 60 fps and great photos with the ability to capture events when not present. Add to that continuous Firmware updates that keep the camera competitive. Sony, users should not even be thinking this after this release. So, my decision is as follows, I will either buy the Z8 or wait for Nikon's next release knowing it will compete but be more cost effective with better video features and photo functionality.
I can't believe that 4K recording is still subsampled or line skipped and not 8K oversampled like in the Nikon Z8 (8.3K oversampled 4K60p) or in the R5 (4K Fine oversampled from 8K up to 30p). The only oversampled 4K mode in the a1 II is the cropped APS-C mode. A flagship should be able to record full-width 8K oversampled 4K60p or at the very least 30p!
@ I’m seriously considering the Nikon Z8 at the moment. I was extremely impressed by its capabilities and I could still use my Sony lenses on the Nikon Z8 with the Megadap ETZ Pro adapter. So I might use a combination of Sony GM lenses and native Nikon glass.
As a professional product photographer I have to say I've owned sony for many years I'm really impressed they are the best mirrorless camera company on the market right now they play ball themselves sony is admirable
nice to gear your thoughts Mads and will be interesting to see the uptake given the price and also will availability be an issue as seen recently with Nikon, Canon and Fuji
I am not one of those dudes thats like, "you dont need anything more than a film camera, and 'Real' photographers dont edit their photos in post" but I will say, unless your buying this camera to make money with the photos your getting i.e. sports or fast paced events... Idk why you would bother. I shoot and print 6-8ft wide landscapes on a A7c and A7II.. I mean this is really just not that necessary. however, there are some really good features here. I'm glad this exists, but just like Mads, its not for me, even if I did have the money.
I have the a7r5 and it's philosophy fits in with the kind of composition photography & videography that I do. The extra resolution gives me more cropping & compositional possibilities. The extra speed would be useful if one were photographing complex fast speed kinetics. It is interesting to see how Sony is able to get more out of its sensors in the 2nd edition. It happened with the shift from a7r4 to 5 with several very useful increments. And it is repeated with the A1mk 2
Sony used to be regarded as a camera brand that releases new cameras with revolutionary features and hardware. Often, their releases pull far ahead of their competition, which makes their market share grow. But with this release of the A1ii, I am truly disappointed, the software features could be easily incorporated into the original A1 with a few simple software updates while the hardware upgrades isn't something to write home about. The A1ii looks to be a rushed job that Sony is trying to put out into the market with consumers, including professionals, left feeling that Sony is "milking the cow".
The A1 II is a dream camera (for me). Perfect tool for landscape/bird photography. The price however, is a complete nightmare. If I was a landscape photographer only I'd get the A7RV. Nikon Z8 is looking very tempting at less than half the price of the A1. Even if the A1 has more features and is the better camera, it certainly isn't twice as good. I don't want to switch to Nikon, but by the looks of it Sony is forcing me to by not making anything equivalent in performance/price.
Either way Sony makes money since Nikon uses their sensor. Kinda the same with Fuji APS-C. You get almost as good for cheaper. Fuji also uses Sony sensor. I was tempted by Nikon but bit conflicted with pre-capture being only JPEG. Canon is able to do RAW, seems more appealing and cheaper. But, always a but, their lens eco system is more limiting. Almost seems like they all met at a table and agreed on terms to not overlap each other too much.
@Battlem0nk Yeah, Sony sensors are popular. There are speculations that the acquisition of Red could end Nikon's dependency to Sony sensors, but I'm not convinced. I was kind of hoping that the A7V would be announced instead of the A1ii when rumors spread that there would be a new model announced in November. And that it would become a worthy competitor to Nikon Z8 and Canon R5ii. But no, Sony greed won't allow for an affordable stacked sensor model. Knowing Sony, when the A7V finally enters the market it's likely gonna be a big disappointment. I'm invested in e-mount but Sony's really pushing me away towards other brands right now. Their insanity is leaving me with few options. I mean, the A1 was introduced at $9k and is still that expensive where I live. And the A1ii is almost 20% more expensive than A1. It's a total disaster.
@@edc641 Nikon pricing is very attractive for someone starting out new or existing user. If you're deep in Sony E-mount system not sure you'll be saving much. Esp if selling your lenses. @@Battlem0nk I can imagine the pain you went through. Too bad for us consumers that there isn't a universal mount for all brands. It comes with a price and might not be worth it 😕

Sony A1II is an underwhelming update, and it still suffers from viewfinder capping. Why would you want a Full HD viewfinder if it goes back to 480p once the camera has to do something else? I would still choose a used A1 over the A7RV. Noise levels are pretty darn bad on R series. I'm happy with the A7IV, but it would have been perfect if they swapped the mode dial to the left and placed a small specs screen. It saves a lot of battery, even if people say these top right screens are outdated. Words that you only would say if you haven't been in the photography business/serious hobby past 4 years which 90 percent of people owning these kinds of cameras ain't. If I was Sony Alpha CEO i would tell A1 owners to ship their cameras for firmware update and a screen revamp for a small sum.
It is lame that you can only shot 1/30th sec max on the composite raw lol. Which reminds me another complaint I have with the Sony cameras. It's great Sony finally implemented focus bracketing shoot and bulb timer that's allow you to shoot more than 30 sec. It all sounds great until I wanted to do a focus bracketing shoot with, say, 120 sec each exposure for nightscape. You can't combine these 2 features together! You can only shoot 30 sec max for focus bracketing. Why?! Nikon had this feature 5 years ago and I've been enjoying it. Why Sony still haven't fixed this bug yet lol. It should be just few line of code changes. Sony please read this lol
