Very thorough comparison and I think your results indicate one would need to be an extreme-nerd camera techy-pro to turn down either camera. Best left as you and Haley decided: if you already have compatible glass, stick with that brand. Agree with you on the menu systems- cameras are getting so complicated (er, feature-bloated) that the menu systems need to be very helpful. Thank you both for a great presentation.

    Hi Slanted Lens,
There are quite a few errors in this video that need to be pointed out. I truly hope that you take these criticism to heart because people will watch your video and make conclusions that they shouldn't. I do not do these kinds of videos because they are extremely time consuming and difficult to do correctly. With that said, let's begin.
    1: 10 bit 4:2:2 8K recording
It is incorrectly stated that the 10bit 4:2:2 8K recording is for external recording. The 10 bit 4:2:2 recording is INTERNAL and selectable in XAVC HS, sourced from Sony's release notes. XAVC HS is not an external thing, it is an internal codec. Also, you are stating this right butted up against recording a raw external signal. 10 bit 4:2:2 cannot be a raw signal sent out through HDMI, so you need to work on your scripts here and read the manufacturer notes. Nowhere does Sony say that 10 bit 4:2:2 is a raw signal for external recording. This entire first few minutes has a lot of problems that need to be addressed.
2: 2:07... NO mention of the totally different video and photo software in camera on the R5c here? This is what sets this camera *most* apart from the Sony A1 and is a big reason it has a "C" as in cinema camera. You mention a red button, clearly a joke, but neglect to mention anything at all of the software that makes the R5c a cinema camera, for some reason. You say it *much* later, at the end, but due to how people watch videos on RUclips, this major difference in the two cameras should be a big highlight for owning the r5c for video production purposes and be mentioned at the head. The inclusion of waveforms and vector scopes is a huge bonus. Most of your audience will never hear this major difference maker between the two cams, if you were the only source of information, and that is a shame.
3: 4:13, Why on Earth would you shoot these wide open when studying the sensor image quality? How could that possibly give you an idea of the sharpness and color rendition or anything of value from the sensor? At 1.2 you are asking the lens to perfectly catch the focus and the image quality will rely far more on the quality of the optics and whether or not you got the subject in focus than anything else. You probably know this, that every lens operates "best" or at least "better" in terms of objective image quality measurements when stopped down at least around 2 stops from wide open, with f5.6 - f8 preferred for sensor quality testing far over wider apertures, as long as it is not causing diffraction with high res sensors. This is a camera test, not a high speed lens comparison is it not?
4: 4:29, you say you are color correcting these with raw images. Then you show images that look totally different from each other, and you then state later that they are jpgs, ok. Which color profile on each camera? They look entirely different from each other. Then you show at 5:09 raw images that are supposedly corrected to look similar. They are not, not even close. I do not understand the purpose of saying that you are correcting these images when they do not at all look similar. This is objective and measurable. I suggest trying out Capture One where you can get nearly identical images from raw files with no real effort so that your viewers can see how alike the images actually are.
5: 5:53... no moire pattern? You did not test for this at all, so why are you discussing it? The image is shot wide open with what I am guessing are the 50mm f1.2 lenses (since I don't recall that detail mentioned before we see results) and only shots of a face as the focus, not a situation or a pattern that would generally introduce moire to a sensor. Which codecs or resolution settings are used? This is important because that could also introduce moire, but you have not stated this. The only way you could possibly see moire is in a thin line of hair or sweater, which likely wouldn't happen on the vast majority of modern sensors no matter how prone to moire they are due to the shooting conditions, subject, framing, and lack of details you provided. f1.2 headshots like these hide A LOT of flaws with sensor moire and artifacts.
6: 5:55 the banding should not be there and it exists throughout. Did you sync the shutter speed with your light frequency? Did you turn on any anti-flicker modes? This can occur with any camera ever made if you are not exposing correctly with the right shutter speed for the environment or using clear scan, anti-flicker. Canon has very effective anti-flicker control and have had this for a long time, so I do not understand how you achieved this with the Canon and the a1 looks fine. You do not state why the banding is there, so people will immediately think its a problem with the camera when it is more than likely user error. Also, what picture profiles are used here? Log with a grade? A Rec709 profile? Its never stated?
7: 9:07, what color profiles and settings regarding noise, sharpness, etc. are being used? Which resolution? 8k, 4k? Binned? Oversampled? You do not have to test every setting, but the settings you do test really should be indicated somewhere so we can see how to replicate what you have done. You can put this at the bottom corners with the basic settings for each camera so other people can do the same tests, or you can give a full screen text detail of settings.
Autofocus Tests: Photo is fine, video I don't understand. Why vertical? Why only testing focus moving toward and away? No lateral movements going from edge to edge? What are your focus settings? Did you only test center point or eye? Why no talking head style AF test, where video AF can be atrocious/obnoxious (flitting back and forth between background and foreground) where the walking tests show flying colors?
Dynamic Range Tests: Important to note that the Canon R5 bakes noise reduction into its raw, so we can probably imagine that the r5c does the same. This test is fine to me and probably the best part of the video.
r5C Video Mode Criticism: The camera is designed as a cinema camera when used in video mode. The menus match the rest of their cine cameras. It makes far more sense for people using Canon Cinema line cameras, like this one, to use a similar menu system to match cameras together and keep the system the same across models. This is so needed and asked for by the production community that Sony has followed Canon's lead and introduced a Cine EI mode to the FX3 so that it matches closer with Sony's cine line than the alpha line when used for video. I understand you are apparently coming at it from a photographer's perspective, but for video makers or cinema camera users, this inclusion of the Canon cine system is a *welcome* change and a major reason to use it over many similar hybrid oriented cameras.
No mention of the exposure scopes (waveform AND vectors scopes) in the r5c compared to the Sony a1 either really makes this part of the video very difficult to watch. Those scopes are a huge upgrade for professional videographers/cinematographers and the lack of them in Sony's hybrid line (including the fx3) is an oversight that should be corrected by Sony.
Sony A1 Crop in 4K: Where did you come up with this? This criticism is entirely incorrect as the crop only exists in certain modes. Then you compare this to the Canon's larger crop from other cameras? I don't understand. 4K modes on the Sony a1 include:
    • 4K full frame pixel binned up to 60p
    • 4K 1.13x cropped pixel binned 120p
    • 4K super 35 over sampled with 1.5x crop
This will conclude my criticisms. I honestly believe this video needs to be redone or removed due to its gross misrepresentation of both products. I am leaving this here on your video in hopes that others will see this comment and have some of the errors in this video corrected.
    Good luck.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw this video. I think that a quick re-edit of the video to explaining that it is very informal and should be lightly considered as a piece to inform purchasing decisions might remedy the situation. I do appreciate the time that it takes to put something like this together but it is very misleading.

i think this is one of the issues of youtube or internet in general, people have voice and people listen to these voices I i think we all could be less byass on how we tell things, for me this review has too many problems to be an objective review, too many errors that can make people take the wrong decisions. our voices in internet have power, lets use them carefully, not just to make clicks and money.

Hello and thank you for the informative video. Some Canon and Sony lenses have image stabilization in the lenses. For the video stabilization tests, did you have image stabilization activated on the lenses for both the Canon and Sony? I was just wondering if the tests only show the camera's stabilization, or did you also have the lenses stabilization activated as well. Thank you for your help.

6:08 - what frame rates were you shooting with both cameras...and more importantly, what Shutter Mode were you shooting with on the R5C? You can change it to Clear Scan and dial in the Hz to remove the banding. Beauty of the R5C being a cinema camera as well as a stills camera.

It seems you have used the super 35 4k crop mode in the A1, rather than the full frame mode. As a result, the low light test reflects results from only half the sensor area. I am sure A1 low light performance is better when using the whole width of the sensor to collect light.

very useful and lively comparative analysis ... I am looking in to buy the canon r5c ... maybe it is the video AF which stops me, as I need to record dance with a moving camera and it is imposible to focus manually .... and apparently the r5c is less efficient than the r5 by canon, and probably than the Sony's. What I don't like in the Sony cameras (a7sIII FX3...) is that there is a certain electronic feel to it, with an AF that goes by steps while the canon R5 is organic as you say, and smooth, and also when you do a camera movement like a smooth panning, the canon feels much smoother than the Sony that shows some sort of "steps"

The IBIS is not great for a video centric which the R5C certainly is, but the Sony color bit depth and gamma curve makes color grading in HDR and other factors an issue. Software can change sync speed. Use Venice in production, but Sony’s below that don’t stack up.
I use GFX 100s for stills work or some video as you have. You didn’t use flicker adjust on Canon. Sony has good things, but in pro work for broadcast or cinema it doesn’t hold up which is the colorist opinion and HDR.

Don't shoot the crop 4K on the A1, shoot 8K. If you can afford one of these cameras, you can afford a good enough machine to handle 8K files (it's really not that demanding compared to a few years ago). In-camera oversampled 4k is really overrated in general? It's not that much of a time or space-saver, the end result is the same compared to shooting 6k or 8k for a 4k timeline, and you sacrifice the ability to zoom/crop in post.
Also, there's nothing wrong with the pixel-binned 4K60/4K120 on the A1, or pixel-binning in general. You still use the full sensor and get full dynamic range/information. Line-skipping, which it is commonly confused with, is the method to be avoided, as it only uses 25% (1/2) or 44% (2/3) of the sensor.

    • @TheSlantedLens

If you can afford this camera then you can afford a bigger computer. And if you can afford a bigger computer you can afford a faster car. And if you can afford a faster car. You obviously need a mansion to park it in front of. And if you have a mansion you obviously can afford a yacht. Which means you are somewhere in the Bahamas and you don't care anymore.

I'm not at your level of photography. I totally dislike just phase detect(only). Nasty experience with lack of micro adjusting with DSLRs(entry to midrange models)...it's fast but hybrid auto focus - trounces just phase detect (for accuracy), especially cameras lower down the price scale. Contrast detect is well known as being more accurate...but combine the 2 (hybrid auto focus)...great IMHO. I'm sort of basing this on DSLRs. Mirrorless - not so much.

The issue you have with micro-adjusting on DSLRs is solely on the alignment of the mirrors within the camera, not the phase detect autofocus system. Knowing that, your observations are not drawing the conclusions that you think they are.

    • @darlingtoncd
      @darlingtoncd 2 года назад

@@gameshoes A reasonable statement. I know all about the technicalities, if you google and research the different modes, contrast detect is more accurate but not as quick as phase detect. With the two together - you have the best of both worlds (hybrid autofocus) this has been covered by photographers on here but I wonder if they forget this fact - at times. Panasonic sticking to their Depth From De-focus system is great for photos but suffers in video where others have either implemented phase detect often with hybrid auto focus. Your statement is valid though.👍

J.P. Morgan goes to the bank. You do the testing that I would do to rate a camera. Very few reviewers own a calibrated LUX meter, which is critical in comparing two cameras.
I own a Z9, A7rIVa, and R5C. One of these cameras is a mistake purchase, with a capital M. The Canon has poor focusing as a "professional" video camera, and is bulky as heck. Heading to a store to get a Sony A1.

But I read the comments and you continued to defend yourself. The worst one was saying in your video that the A1 has 1.6 crop.
