    I got my Sony a1 back in June of last year. Coming from a9II and the a6400 previously, the a1 was definitely a huge game changer for me. the biggest attraction for me was it's ability to lock Eyes on Birds which previous Sony Cameras did not have. Being a Bird Photographer first, it was a major need to make it easier to get the photo I hope to get at the moment. All of this alongside it's 50mp which is great to crop or show a lot of detail as well as it's 30fps in Compressed RAW in which is the Format I have used in A9II and it really helped have a higher chance to get that moment. Especially when shooting Birds in flight or other high paced action. I took the a1 with me in Yellowstone which was great. the biggest test though had to be when I went to the Masai Mara in Kenya. There I really pushed the limits on the a1 shooting in ISO levels that I normally don't shoot in and came out with great results. There were even moments where I would use my Dad's a9II with a shorter lens to shoot up close moments and found that the a1 catches animals' eyes more often and accurately than the a9II since the a1 has the newer Eye-Tracking tech. the a1 may be an Expensive Camera, but I find it's worth every penny.

    • @BR34K
      @BR34K 2 года назад

      @@bluecheese20401 It's hit and miss. I've had the A1 for three weeks now, and I've probably taken 10k bird photos so far. It's really good if you can fill a decent portion of the frame, but I quite often end up using the stick to override focus just as I did on my A7iii. So there are some hugely diminishing returns on the money you spend. But it depends what you're going to photograph. Great for sports. Great for birds if you have a hide. BIF works very well, but eye af isn't really a factor then. I only have the 200-600 though, and I imagine the 400 or 600 primes would be even better. The speed and resolution is the big selling point for birds.

    I don't know why you would change systems at this point given how much you like the A1 unless you needed the pro build of the other two for some reason. Sure other manufacturers may have some better performing features, BUT, we have been getting perfect results with cameras such as the D850, for several years and the differences between the A1, the R3 and the Z9 are too insignificant to warrant jumping brands every time one leapfrogs the other - that is just a crazy policy.

    Just for info, the need of shooting uncompressed is kind of not needed you can shoot lossless compressed on the A1 in full 14bits. Now at 30 fps also many reviewers assume we fall back to the 12bits compressed format sony has been using up to this point. (just check the exif data) but the A1 stays in 14 bits (also in the manual. Now why does sony now put 14bits in the exif data and not 12bits is simple it uses a new lossycompressed mode that turns out to be 13bits. Af far as i know nobody has yet tested the new A1 edge cases with compressed raw '13bits' vs the '12bits' one of say the A7R4 or R3 and that should be done. Recap A1 always shoots 14bits but in compressed mode (only enforced at 30fps) the compression seems to be resulting in 13bits images. What Jared is asking for is that you can set the mode pre speed (or per dial setting since they have that menu anyway) makes perfect sense and i hope sony will do that. I will also try todo a 'old' compressed 12bits review vs the new 14/13bits compressed mode in the known edge cases if i can find some time.

    Lumix G9 shooter here. I can definitely see myself buying the A1 when I really start to make money on this stuff, for now MFT is just fine and the G9 allowed me to get a superb camera feature-wise for really not that much money (used, 800eur). I just feel like Nikon will always be the go-to for outdoor/wildlife photographers for the insane build quality (look at how Morten Hilmer treats his!!) but the speed and quality the A1 produces is next to nothing. If somehow, Sony and Nikon got together to create the Alpha 1Z or something similar, that would end all debates forever. Canon really aren't my cup of tea, I just cant see one specific thing they do better than anyone else. Sony have their low light and AF performance, Nikon is built to last a generation and are very quickly catching up to Canon and Sony's AF, but Canon are just... Canon? They're pretty well built and reasonably fast/good quality but honestly I would put my lil G9 up against some of their APSc cameras and be pretty confident that I could destroy them in things like wildlife/sports shooting. Obviously the newer cameras are quite good, but I feel like I'll always just have three horses in my race - Lumix, Nikon and Sony

I personally think that Sony menus are misunderstood, Sony designed the camera with so many customizable buttons so that you do not have to use the menus, yes it's a pain maybe on your first 2 days, but once you set them up, you can pretty much forget about the menus completely. BTW you can save 3 different sets of buttons on your dial (I typically use one for studio/flash, sports, landscape). MFT and APSC are great systems too, I just wish they had better AF tracking, no PDAF is a deal breaker if you shoot moving subjects, video, sports and wildlife.

    I realize that Canon and Nikon build quality glass too. However, I am really pleased with some of the lenses that Sony has come out in the past three years. Light, sharp, and with extremely low flare. There was no reason to assume that Sony would have been able to do this, but they did it somehow. It would take a LOT for some other manufacturer to make me give up my 135mm f/1.8 GM.

      The 35gm is the smallest, lightest, sharpest fast 35 I’ve ever seen. Seriously it’s unbelievably sharp and the AF is super quick too. The glass is the only reason I haven’t swapped to canon. GM glass is just impeccable.

      Well that good glass was made and only made for that "puny" mount, for sony by sony... that "puny" mount has allowed third parties to make lenses for it too... what's so puny about it? A few milimiters less of size? I dont see where that has hurt it a milimiter in performance.

      @@Mr09260 , I have found that lens quality can make a huge difference in my photography. As an old guy, I find it a real delight to get sharp images edge to edge, with detail in the deepest shadows, and buttery smooth bokeh. I'll leave mount design to the engineers. They're obviously doing something right. As far as enabling-technology that really counts, Sony has dual processors in its A1 and overall a four year head start on the tricky engineering of producing stacked sensors at reasonable cost.

    • @xr3217

      Hi I don't know if your question was answered but from what I've heard the a7siii is an amazing video camera. So are the rest. As for photography it depends on what you're shooting. If it's birds and animals the af on the a1 is the best by far. Or if you need hi fps. The a7riv is amazing. Great autofocus and higher megapixels. But for the a1 and a7riv you do need very good fast aperture glass so your photos are noisy. But again it depends on what your shooting. Lots of good 3rd party glass with great apertures and af. If you don't need hi megapixel then the a7siii would be your best choice.

    Great video, crazy how the A1 is still ahead of the competition even though it released a year earlier.
    So, some obvious improvements for a future firmware update:
    - HI+ should automatically override the raw to compressed, and when you turn the dial back to Hi/Med/Lo, then it should revert to the previous setting, presumably lossless compressed.
    - automatic flicker frequency detection => choose the closest shutter speed, like the Canon R3

    I hope Sony will have a new hybrid camera model at price level of Canon R5 around $4,000-4,500. Not necessary of very high megapixels (not too low like A7S3) or high shooting speed like A1. Giving good low light performance and Video 4K 120fps without heat problem. Good autofocus system and high resolution of LCD and EVF like A1. With these features and price point, it will be a sweet spot for many users.

      30 FPS is great to have, but positioning and experience far outweight the technical progress made with these cameras. I have an A1 myself, and I've shot a few soccer games. My girlfriend, a sports photographer for 10 years, still shoots a Nikon D4 and D4s, and her pictures are way, way better than mine. I'm sure her pics might be slightly better with an A1, but she always knows where to be to capture the right moments. She doesn't feel the need to have a faster camera.
