    It looks like the R5C is doing some more processing to the raw files before they’re saved out than the Nikon. They’ve done this consistently on the R-series.

    • @contentm3893
      @contentm3893 Год назад +3

      No, the R5c is not processing it's 8K R in any way. It's a flat profile. The slanted lens didn't record 8K RAW from the R5c. You have to have an external battery source to do that and they did not record 8K raw like they said they did.

    • @contentm3893
      @contentm3893 Год назад +2

      8K raw on the R5c is flat and noisier then what they show. They just kinda bypass the flat RAW straight out of camera look and jump to a color corrected noise reduction image for both cameras. That's not fair to either camera because you can push the highlights too far and over expose.

    Great comparison, and I'd agree with your findings, but I feel its worth mentioning that the nikon has a full size hdmi port which is far more robust than the mini port on the r5c.
    For me the great battery performance of the Z9 is the deciding factor, I can live with the extra size nowing I'm not going to run out of power every few minutes, and the Nikon is way more ergonomic if you have to rig external power on the r5c.

    I've noticed Canon has clearly cheapened out on its Pro-sumer line of lenses. The Canon Cinema Series lenses are breathtaking, but I see how they lack proper contrast values in the regular line of lenses versus the Nikon Pro-Sumer line of lenses, which have superior contrast and color rendition across the broad range of still and video test shots you have made. Nikon is the clear winner here, based on the optics. 👍👀

    Adobe Raw and LR will make z9 file noisier. Had Nikon rep look at my file as I complaint about high noise ratio at 1000, 2000+ ISO. Nikon rep said Adobe hasn’t update their applications to support new Z9 file format. He recommends using Nikon Studio to process Z9 raw file. It definitely was better but Capture One does it a lot better.
    So Z9 owner beware. Don’t use Adobe Raw/LR just yet. Capture One - 30 days free trial or Nikon Studio download for free.

    As far as the ISO test and Canon being cleaner with no colorful noise, it is just doing it in camera, which results in less detail, softer image. It is maybe 1 step less when editing, but maybe you would want to choose if you want softer cleaner image or edit in post and get it somewhere in between? Companies are getting smarter to show less weaknesses and have "better results for marketing purposes" and if you don't analyze what's happening and why, you can think- oh this is better, or this is not, so 50/50. I prefer the colors from the Nikon. Colorful noise- I can remove it with 1 click/slide, but matching colors is pain.

    10:00 digital noise means nothing, you have luminance noise and color noise, which was stronger with the Nikon.
    Also the iso amplification does not use the same technology with integer multiples of 100 ISO and non integers multiples. Also, when you did the DR test, you want to have a controlled environment, and therefore the sun and different moments are not helping.

    I have the Z9, been in the Nikon system for 15 years so i do like the Z a lot, so a fun video to see. One thing i wonder about the fan on the Canon, how weather resistant is that one? Im doing a lot of wildlife and with the Z, heavy rain is like,, well we get soaked but not a problem, its just water. So i wonder what the RC5 user say, is it okay or pack up and go home? It also had a surprise of the AF, i thought that Canon was ahead of Nikon on that part, so fun to see that they has made big progress there. Thanks for a good compare video. Marry Christmas :)

    Good comparison. Which raw converter did you use for the still images? There is growing awareness that Adobe ACR or Lightroom produces a noisier file on the Z9 than Capture One or Nikons own software. The fact that the Nikon held up better in the video high ISO comparison confirms it even more.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 2 года назад

      Nice try! It's common knowledge that both Canon and Nikon files render far better (and cleaner) in Capture One Pro. Nikon high ISO performance is lagging the competition in mirrorless cameras. I'm only shooting an RP at the moment, soon buying an R6 to have 2 FF bodies. My RP has noticeably better ISO performance than the Z7ii and Z9 cameras. The R6 is better still. I'm amazed at how early in the ISO range I start to see noise in Nikon images. I think the Z6ii may be very good though.
      Did we watch the same video? The Nikon fell apart quicker in ISO in both video and stills. It had horrible colour noise and the image was softer, probably suggesting it applied more noise reduction. The biggest surprise to me was that the Canon has better dynamic range. The highlight recovery was clearly better.

      @@cooloox First of all, compare 20mp camera to 45mp camera in terms of noise is not fair if you zoom both to 100%. Canon is also applying noise reduction to raw file, but Nikon isn't. Nikon persevere better details due to this, and you can get better noise reduction in post. Nikon uses the BSI sensor from Sony, which is known to have very good high iso performance compare to Canon's FSI sensor.

    Very nice test, JP. It seemed to me that you were actually testing post-processing quality differences for these cameras. I recently bought into Topaz's holy trinity and feel the question is justified why Lightroom never got to this quality level. I guess the answer is that the Mudbricks used our subscription money to develop more code variants with similar or reduced functionality e.g. for mobile, and pay bonuses to the board. While being very slow on innovation.
    The first portrait in the video showed the model's hair darker in the 105/2.8S shot and that may have been optics with less glare.
    The slightly blown out highlight in the Nikon shot at neutral exposure may be a case of slight over-exposure. Or difference in how one vendor relates correct exposure to ISO versus the other (the ISO institute has no opinion of correct exposure relative to the ISO parameter).
    As to noise, deeper in the dynamic range, it would be interesting, in the case of Nikon, to compare raw processing in different apps: Lightroom (=Camera Raw), Capture One, Topaz, DxO, and Nikon NX Studio. If you could render a raw file "as is" you would be in shock and horror from its ugliness. You would only see color noise and luminance noise. Raw processing must fix that and software quality is of the utmost importance in that.

    With the Nikon, having an electronic shutter does effect the dynamic range slightly, though the fact that it is able to shoot at ISO 64, does help a little. Of course the big issue with the Z9 currently is getting hold of one. Greys of Westminster have only just managed to fulfil their day 3 orders of the Z9, which is a little farcical and to be honest, after 20+ years of using Nikon, I have decided to get a GFX 100s because even if Nikon did announce a Z7III/Z8 it would probably take a year to get hold of the camera.

    The canon's color info gets blurred at high ISO that's why you only see noise in the illumination info. (denoises the chroma channels)

    I was excited to see this video appear in my feed. I have both the R5C and the Z9, and have been on the fence about which to keep for a couple of months. I'm leaning towards keeping both until the R1 comes out, and then I'll sell the Z9 because I prefer Canon ergonomics to Nikon, and I'm more heavy into RF glass. In practical terms, AF and IQ are close enough that I wrote them off as a deciding factors early on in my evaluation. Also, if internal RAW video wasn't a must have for me, I definitely would have considered the A1 as well.
    The Z9 is a more versatile camera I can take anywhere and standalone shoot just about anything without constantly needing to mind the battery. I prefer the rear screen design to the R5C's flippy screen targeted at tubers & bloggers. The Z lenses are better suited to video IMHO, with less breathing and near parfocal. However, the Z9 is a heavy beast, so I'm not inclined to take the Z9 when needing to pack a camera alongside other gear (when considering whole system, since currently no Z70-200/4). Also, Resolve is your only choice at this time if editing RAW video, so this could slow down workflow for some users. Resolve is my go-to for grading and editing, so not a problem for me.
    The R5C is a relief to hold next to the Z9 and is much more travel and backpack friendly **IF** you're already taking a USB-C PD charger with you, which I always do. Often overlooked in reviews is that, when in video mode, the R5C draws power at about the same rate whether recording or not, and depends on format/fps -- so you can easily eat into your shoot time if going about setting up the shot at a gingerly pace so, when shooting video, I often supply power via USB PD. Of course, for anybody shooting in a studio environment or rigging out the camera, the battery is a non-issue, but I'm an outdoors shooter and rigging out the camera defeats the entire point of the camera IMHO. The R5C shines compared to the Z9 in shooting video, with a complete set of monitoring tools and flexible file formats having broad NLE support (and no pending legal litigation for internal RAW). I also generally prefer the graded footage I get out of the R5C to the Z9, but this could be on me. There's not much mindshare to draw on when it comes to grading Nikon RAW by comparison to Canon, and I run into speedbumps such as Nikon RAW not being included in the list of source gammas in Resolve's color matching tool. Simply put, Canon system is more mature than Nikon, at least regarding RAW video in mainstream tools. Although the Z9 IBIS does a better job of smoothing out the jitters than the R5C, it's evident from watching the video that it originated from a hybrid camera. R5C with lens OIS helps smooth the footage while maintaining a more cinematic feel -- I don't even bother with the digital IS. Switching photo and video modes on the R5C feel disruptive, but not for the reason everybody talks about (the 5-7 sec). The two modes have completely different OSes, and several of the buttons have different mapping so it feels like you're working with two cameras in one body instead of one camera in different modes (like the Z9). Also, because of the different OSes, the AF behavior in the R5C is more limited compared to what you get in stills mode (or on the R5 or Z9 when shooting video). Still, if not for the battery life issue, I'd take the R5C over the Z9 if I had to choose between the two, but only because of what and how I shoot -- YMMV, naturally.

      Apparently the AF is not the same, there are some differences. I seem to recall that there are some performance hits (not just battery life) when running the R5C off the battery compared to running off an external power source.
      The R3 would have made a better comparison as it, too, has no overheating issues, but has superior AF and superior high ISO performance over the R5C.

      Is an R5 with better video and no over heating. It offers a lot of codecs and video options that a normal hybrid doesnt. the 4k is top notch as it is always coming from the 8K.
