    Having owned 2 C70's for about 8 months and shot over 50 weddings with them (about 500 hours of hands on use, not to mention personal work) I can safely say the C70 is the winner for video only.
    My interest in the R5c came from two key things the C70 lacks.
    1. The C70 doesn't take photos. (well it'll take 4.2k 12bit DNG's but... yeah)
    2. The C70's autofocus isn't... perfect. It works really damn well in 70% of situations but like most cameras it fails to pull tack sharp focus when doing gimbal work when the subject is right near the edge of your lenses hyperfocal distance.
    Having used the R5 for photos, I would love that AF system in the C70. After doing some digging though, the Canon R5c does not have eye detect when in cinema mode.
    If you are on the fence I agree with Brandon. If you NEED a top of the line photo camera + amazing video, get the R5C. If you don't need a top of the line photo camera then I would look at getting the C70 + used R6 etc. Heck I just bought another Nikon Z7 for $800 off ebay and the AF on Nikons Z line is more than good enough for killer photos.
    The three major reasons you'd want/need the C70 over the R5c.
    1. 4 Channel, 24bit 48khz audio with auto leveling. (With two phantom powered xlr ports, built in stereo mic and 3.5mm mic port)
    2. 10 Stops of built in ND Filters. These are so key for good footage.
    3. Battery Life.
    To elaborate...
    4 channels of audio means you can have two wireless lavs and scratch (or even 3 wireless lavs! etc) With auto leveling you don't even need to check your levels, just set the gain in the middle, let the auto leveling do the rest. With 24bit audio files you'll never run into clipping even with it auto leveling. I have yet to have clipping. My audio game has never been better. With the ND filters, you can then use a CPL filter on the front of your lens or you could use your lens hood to prevent unwanted glare. Glare is one of the number things I see from armature videographers. Thread on ND filters only cause more glare. Battery life is self explanatory but I typically get through an entire day with only swapping batteries once.
    Hopefully this helps someone.

      Agree with all of this.
      Just to add though, if you're comparing the C70 and R5C AF in video mode, they are basically the same:
      R5C in photo mode: Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
      R5C in video mode: Dual Pixel CMOS AF
      C70: Dual Pixel CMOS AF
      There's only 1 camera Canon make that does Dual Pixel CMOS AF II in video mode and that's the R3. It also has eye tracking in video mode as well.
      Anyone buying an R5C would assume it has the same great AF in video mode as it has in stills mode, but it actually doesnt.

    • @JakeGleim
      @JakeGleim 2 года назад

      @@Cowprint1 I only hope that in the next iteration of the C70 etc. they have better AF performance. It's great but its still not good enough to rely on fully.

      @@Cowprint1 Very good to know, thanks dude! I really need a hybrid B camera for my C70, and was seriously considering the R5C, especially for additional photo work PLUS importantly a cam to accompany a C70 but sit permanently on a gimbal for when shooting events. That you've noted the R3 as having Dual Pixel CMOS AF II in video mode is very timely and exactly the call I was looking for.
      Cheers mate.

      I have a slightly different take on the 3 key issues you mentioned: I use an external audio recorder (MixPre10 II) for all audio channels, timecode synchronized to the cameras, so I only use scratch audio on-camera. Thus no preference for either camera here. I agree with the ND filters - built-in is fantastic on the C70. Regarding battery life, for the R5C I use the dummy battery connected to an IDX 98 Wh battery on my belt (even on the gimbal) and get endless battery life (but I am tethered to it). The big factor in favor of the R5C is the full-frame versus super-35 sensor size. I just find it easier to get good-looking shallow DOF with the full-frame sensor, and the noise seems slightly better as well. Both great cameras...

      Don’t have the C70 in my hands right now, but is there any specific settings to turn on the stills in DNG? I haven’t seen such a thing anywhere before, what I’ve seen is jpg stills in log

    Well done comparison. Recently, I've been looking at both as my next step up to a higher end cinema camera. The key word being "cinema". That being said, the R5C would be a great choice because I already have excellent ND filters and an adjustable step up ring - by Revoring - that is designed to adapt to filter sizes between 49mm and 62mm, with a filter thread of 67mm on the front. Although I have found some used C70's for a price around the same as the R5C. I'm not ready to purchase anything, yet. But, I think I would be happy with either one.

    Great video as usual, I think something to note for the ND's I am using the EF to RF adapter which allows for the ND's where it's not as nice as the built in and obv you can't use the RF glass, I think it's still a good for a setup. I am coming from a blackmagic 6k pro so I have a lot of EF glass that still performs well with this setup.

    Great video Brandon! I have them both, and can't bring myself to feel that there's much of a comparison. Photography aside, if I have to pack one in my bag, i'm choosing the C70. I say this because it just requires a lot less to function the way I need a camera to at the 4-5k price point. I often work in fast-paced, uncontrolled environments. The C70 is just ready for anything you throw at it in terms of video. The thought of having a cinema camera that I immediately had to start purchasing "workaround" accessories for, immediately took the fun out of using it. So the R5C is Cam B for me. It's great, but I just enjoy the C70 more. The R5C is like getting into the electronic vehicle space...It's shiny, fast, capable of so much, but kinda buggy in the beginning. Sometimes you just need your car to crank up, run on normal fuel, and be reliable. They both have their place.

      Depends on what you need it for. For shooting online marketing content as a hybrid shooter myself, where many customers always brought up the question “can I grab a high quality still from the video so we can save time and no longer separately shoot additional photos anymore?” I always felt a bit insecure when shooting 4K only with the C70, but since I got the R5C not only I shoot 8K 60fps, but I also grab stills from the best scenes and I further process them with Topaz AI plug-ins for amazing high-iso clean results (if any noise is visible), so I am able to fulfill my clients wishes that they previously had and I could even upsell faster due to the “8K stills” feature. If I shoot 8K I have a FXLIon Nano One battery on top of the cage, on a Ronin RS3 Pro since Run&Gun operation is crucial for me. It’s so much better with the R5C now than it was with the C70.

    Hi Brandon. I really like this video. I have a R5 then was deciding to get a more robust cinema camera. Based on this video, I objective feedback think I'll go with the c70 mainly because the battery life on the r5 and potentially r5c are not going to be that great compares to the c70 and I do have some old EFs lens and the RF0.71x adapter already. The C70 has about 9 Megapixels and the R5C has about 45 Megapixels: for cinema, less is more! That's why the ARRI Alexa Mini has less than 10 Megapixels, and why even RED’s highest resolution 8K cameras still have fewer Megapixels than the R5C. The C70 can be used to shoot films, the R5C can be used to shoot Instagram Ads and Vlogs.
    This is not just a matter of 4K vs. 8K, it is a matter of Cine sensor vs Photo sensor. Mirrorless camera video looks like a photo in motion; cinema camera video looks like the movies.
    This is not to say the R5C is bad - I own one, along with a C300iii. The mirrorless, pixel-dense look can be a great creative tool because it is more hyper-realistic, and I opt for the R5C when shooting digital-forward content, like Instagram Ads. It is phenomenal that Canon added their full Cinema software to the R5C, along with the fan for cooling, so the tool is actually usable, but I would never consider the two cameras interchangeable.
    Hope this helps!

    • @shueibdahir
      @shueibdahir 2 месяца назад

      Do remember that the lower the megapixel count, the less the color resolution. So for 10mp sensor, the green channel is only 5mp while the red and blue channels are 2.5mp. So for true RGB 444 color at 4k you need 32mp aka 8K

    • @shueibdahir
      @shueibdahir 2 месяца назад

      Color resolution isn't as noticable tho as luma resolution is but it's the thing that gives the image the "weight" or "thick color", not the bit depth only.

  • @louie8488

    You won't see the difference in dynamic range when shooting in controlled environments like in this video, but it is definitely there. Also the softness on the C70 compared to the tack sharp R5c is desirable for some (myself included) as it has less of a video kind of feel. The sound options (two mini XLRs) and full sized HDMI also help, not to mention the battery life. ND's are a must. I own a C70 so I'm obviously biased, but if you're not planning on taking photos, there's no comparison.

    • @slurp3194
      @slurp3194 Год назад +1

      The softer image on c70 tends to be more appealing for cinematic work. But then again you can screw in a 1/8 mist filter and it will do the exact same job and for some reason if you wanted a sharper image for a certain project you always have that room. The dynamic range is probably the biggest factor is the practical usability of the c70. Built in nds is huge

I wonder if the camera I end up buying right now might not matter as much as picking which lens ecosystem I’ll live in for the foreseeable future, Canon RF vs Sony.

      Sony >> lenses are awesome better build quality then rf mount but imagine quality is the same. Idk they are both amazing in terms of sharpness but honestly if ur video focused lenses dont even matter. You will probably end up buying 3rd party cine lens and older photo lenses.

    Good review, I looked at the r5c but the need for external power, the lack of ibis, and the micro hdmi port put me off.
    Comparing it to the Nikon z9 made the z9 the obvious choice.

      @@RayValdezPhotography yes it does. Clog2 shows a couple more stops on Xyla/Imatest than Clog3. Of course you have to apply moderate noise reduction in post. I was just talking about the R5 C. Imatest shows a total of 17 stops for the C70 compared to 16 stops for the R5C, giving a one stop advantage for the C70 in Clog2. Have a good day.

    Good video mate, don't want to be too nitpicky but I wanted to clarify that size of the sensor doesn't contribute to how much light it ''lets in''. It does have an effect on the overall cleanness of the image on higher sensitivity but that's a different subject.

    I am so close to buying both of these cameras. It's useful to know the issues I might face. This is a big step for me since up until this point I've been filming with some very entry-level cameras to say the least. I love the built-in ND and the audio options. I think the C70 would allow me to work faster. I know a few people who own it and they have told me it's no contest what my A-cam should be. That being said, I've been watching a ton of C70 videos to reaffirm my decision. Yours was one of the best. You have great delivery!

    I have loved the C70 for corporate and doc work…using speed booster adapter. I also have older cams 1DC and XC10…old and limited, yes, but still workhorse cameras with stunning images. Instead of the R5C, we just added the Sony FX30…kinda because of price, but mostly for its form factor. Matching it with the C70 isn’t an insurmountable task. We will see what the future holds.

    Another great review and always great to see black filmmakers working together and shout out to Marcus … the R5C is tempting but only this that holds me back is the camera requires more cfexpress cards than my c500 mk2 and yes you can shoot at a reduction but then that negates the image advantage it has over my Bcam C70. It’s a remarkable hybrid but weirdly place because for cinema films you don’t want an image that’s overly sharp, which is reason why Hollywood black magic filters are used so often. The battery as you stated, lack of NDs you already explained and my last point is if it’s being used sparingly at 8k raw than the R5 with IBIS and no need for external battery makes R5c a tough buy with that in mind for ME … all in all keep up great content 👍🏽

    The bit about ND filters wasn't a strong point, just add an ND filter to the lens and dial in the exposure you want. No biggie. C70 does zero photos while R5C does 50mp images at 20 fps, yes I know, that not a video thing but is very useful and high end spec. Battery life for video is the major issue and fault on the R5C and where the C70 smashes it. What power solution did you use for the R5C?

    The C70 is a better run and gun documentary style video camera. Brandon mentioned the internal ND (FTW!!) but not 4 channels recording on the C70. I mount a shotgun mic on my C70 going into XLR1, and plug a Rode Wireless Go II (w/ dual transmitters) into the 3.5mm mic input. I also have an XLR reporter mic and can readily plug it into XLR2 for ENG-type shooting.

      About rigging, for bigger production or when you have specific needs you can rig both, but flotherwise for lighter and faster setup where you don't have the need special accessories the bigger one has already built in all that you may need, including a decent battery life.

The crop in S35 is probably comparable to the crop you would get in IBIS. If you have the correct focal lens, that's a work around? Of course 6K that is not 4K..

    Nice video. Interesting to hear your thoughts. I like the image quality better in the R5C as it's sharper and the full frame gives more flexibility than working with super 35 of the C70. Yes, there are workarounds you need to make to use the R5C, but I think it's worth it for better image quality, and in the end it's not too much extra work.
