    You're Losing Me Lyric Video (Teller 13 Taylor): • Taylor Swift - You're ...
    -----------------------
There was a bit of drama earlier this year, supposedly between Billie Eilish and Taylor Swift. It didn’t really seem to be between them, but between their fanbases. But it now seems to be escalating, with a lot of a fans theorizing that they have an issue with each other. And they could be onto something, because the other day, Billie’s manager Danny was liking hate tweets about Taylor, accusing her of not letting other artists like Billie Eilish, SZA, and Olivia Rodrigo shine.
Back in April, Billie did an interview with Billboard criticizing the trend of releasing albums with a ton of variants. She said, “We live in this day and age where for some reason, it’s very important to some artists to make all sorts of different vinyls and packaging, which ups the sales and ups the numbers and gets them more money… It’s some of the biggest artists in the world making 40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing just to get you to keep buying more … It’s irritating to me that we’re still at a point where you care that much about your numbers and you care that much about making money”.
After this quote was publicized, people immediately began drawing the connection to Taylor, which makes sense. She’s gained attention for doing this exact thing, releasing a ton of different album variants with a slightly different tracklist, and has received criticism about it for years. She’s been called a “capitalist queen” by Swifties, in a sort-of self-aware way, but she has also gained criticism from the general public, and a lot of her own fans, with people saying it comes across as money-hungry and wasteful.
The exact points that Billie raises about lack of sustainability and caring too much about numbers, are views that have been continually expressed about Taylor over the years, even from Swifties. So people making the connection totally makes sense.
Billie responded and said “I wasn’t singling anyone out, these are industry-wide systemic issues”. And Billie acknowledges that she also releases multiple album variants and centers her issues with this around environmentalism. But, the sustainability argument is far from the only issue people have with this.
I’ve seen a lot more criticism towards album variants in the last couple of years than I did before that, and this raises the question, is mounting criticism of album variants coming. There are a variety of things that artists can do that are considered harmful to their career, like staying silent on major political issues, and I think if people get vocal enough about this, eventually the trend of multiple album variants could also become so controversial that artists avoid it.
Since Taylor Swift is culturally the face of this, I want to explore her history of it, why I think it has gotten out of hand, and why the supposed beef between her and Billie has resurfaced in the last few days. Firstly, releasing different album variants obviously isn’t new. Pop artists particularly have always released albums, deluxe editions, country-exclusive editions and so on. But the volume does seem to have increased. Taking Taylor as an example, when you look at the variants of albums like 1989 and reputation, Taylor only released a few options, mainly just changing the colour of the vinyl. 1989 had a deluxe edition with a bonus three tracks, and reputation had no deluxe at all.
Fast-forward to 2020 that’s when things really started to change for Taylor. When she announced her indie-folk album folklore, she revealed that there were 8 different versions of the album, with different covers and differently colored vinyls. And there were a few people criticising this at the time on social media, but generally people didn’t have an issue with it. Me personally, I didn’t either. I think giving fans an option of cover and color if they want to buy an album physically is cool.

the three hour show had so many reasons as well. loverfest was cancelled which was her first album without its own tour; then folklore and evermore followed during covid which was impossible to tour with. then midnights, which wouldn’t have made since to just tour that album when there, at that point, would have been THREE albums not toured. so yes, there was a three hour long setlist. because she WANTED to perform all of her works (well, except us debut stan’s ;()

People who say Taylor needs to let other artists be at the top don't understand how the music industry works. Stuff like the Billboard charts are a competition, not a charity. I don't watch sports so I may sound unread, but for example, people aren't gonna tell the Chiefs to let the Lakers have a point just because they've already scored enough. They're gonna tell the Lakers to step up their game so that they can hopefully get a point. This situation is no different, and to me begging another artist to let you have a #1 makes you look weak and pathetic. If you don't have the following to beat Taylor Swift in her 5th week, just say that. 95% of the industry doesn't 🤷🏾‍♂️

i think the difference is olivia didn't promote it as having a bonus track, it was a surprise so it felt more like a present + by the time vinyls were shipped, most variants besides the regular pressing were sold out, so it wasn't like she was boosting her own sales by having the different songs, since no one knew they even existed

i just think theres a lot of hypocrisy from both sides, billie herself has told her fans that she doesn't care about the sales or chart numbers (though she did release 8 vinyl variants for her recent album, which completely negates her talking point about overconsumption, but thats besides the point), so her fans shouldn't care either. it's been clear for as long as her career has last that taylor likes being at the top of the charts and likes getting praise for her work, hence why swifties are always talking about numbers.
ultimately, do i think its shady that taylor is releasing all these versions to manipulate charts? yes. do i think its hypocritical of billie to try and take a moral stance on the subject, despite her actions not aligning with her points? also yes. people fail to realize all these artists mentioned are part of major record labels. these are not indie artists. ALL their music is a business and their teams/labels are going to want to maximize profits. taylor is obviously the #1 artist in the world right now, so they're going to make their jobs easier by prioritizing her projects as that is what is going to bring in the most profit.
as for the beyonce situation you briefly mentioned, i don't agree with what you said only because beyonce didn't even announce the tracklist until 2 days prior to the album releasing, and she had posted her vinyls long before that, so it's not like fans who bought the vinyls were expecting 27 tracks, since they didn't even know how long the tracklist was going to be in the first place.
i always love your videos because of how informative they are and even though you do give your opinions, they don't feel like you're trying to sway the opinions of your viewers and leave room for discussion!

This is not a new thing to be happening. Taylor did not make this up her self. The Beatles did this, many artists in the 80’s did this, and now other artists are doing this not just Taylor.
You don’t have to buy them. Between all the streaming services, and people sharing what they got on social media, you can see and hear what’s on all of them. i think this situation wil definitely create conversations around capitalist tactics with album sales like you said and it's unfortunate that taylor, who is literally the biggest artist in the world, is unnecessarily making these decisions because of her chart obsession, which later gets her (rightfully) dragged by everyone.
i would rather think this is not a personal thing (since taylor is a 34 year old woman and not a 15 year old twitter user she should understand billie never said anything against her), yet dropping these versions to stay at #1 for a fifth week feels quite disrespectful towards a fellow artist, especially considering billie was probably going to block ttpd for one or two weeks maximum.

    • @icydelight3693

I understand but at the same time, charts are a competition and Taylor doesn’t really have to slow things down to let other artists shine… every artist does what’s best for them… someone might say that Dua and Billie dropping their albums a month after the release of TTPD was an attack at Taylor’s sales, but at the end of the day every artist does what’s best for them. Yes Billie could have hit n1, but at the same time it’s not like her fans are not gonna listen to her album to buy Taylor’s variants. Taylor’s success is not going to diminish Billie’s and if her album is well received it will sell well nonetheless (and I think it will). We've been in the age of digital distribution for a while now. No one has to buy any physical versions to hear all the songs. As someone who buys many physical copies, I see them more as collectibles than as a distribution channel. It really doesn't change much if every variant has every song or not.
Let's also not forget that physical media has size limits. There wasn't space on Midnights til dawn for every song. And songs like Snow On The Beach More Lana didn't exist on release so Taylor wouldn't have been able to plan for it.
I think all the extra songs on both Midnights and TTPD were released separately for production reasons. Letting more people buy CDs for $20, vs fewer people buying double CDs for $30, helps keep the cost down for people who just want a regular non-deluxe copy. Similarly, multiple variants of a double vinyl is a lot easier to do than multiple quad vinyls. If/when a full version is made, it almost certainly won't be produced and distributed in the same quantities that the main album was made in since it'll mostly be for the die hard fans.
For previous albums, Taylor has talked about how you can't make giant albums and ridiculously long songs. I think she's always constrained herself because of that, and now that vault tracks have shown that that's not the case, she isn't holding back. That's great because she is finally ok with putting out what she wants to put out.
I totally agree with the criticisms of digital distribution. $6 per voice memo is...too far.

Taylor is Guilty As Sin for multiple vinyl variants. Somehow multiple vinyl variant revives the dying demand for vinyl in the streaming age. These vinyl became a memorabilia or collectible years from now.
On the "beef" with Billie - Taylor has been supporting newer and younger female artists but Billie is sprinkling shade to Taylor in over the years. In the interview about the multiple album vinyl, yes it was an industry wide phenomenon but at the time it was done, it was Taylor who just released TTPD and had done the exact same thing so inevitably Taylor would be dragged.
Billie released a month after Taylor but Taylor has been in the top for a month already. She could have just let Billie shine through with her release but Taylor being aware of the multiple vinyl issue decided to play on Billie's game - she released digital versions with voice memos. Then Billie did the thing she criticized about - multiple vinyl variants. Taylor beat her on her own game and Billie got somehow "exposed" or called "hypocrite" (according to discourse in X) for releasing multiple vinyl variant which she contradicted in her interview and sighted environmental impacts, profits and more.
Then she made comments about the 3 hour show, for which Taylor and Beyonce had 3 hour show while Taylor is still going on with her 3 hour Eras Tour. Taylor then decided to release yet another digital version of TTPD with live songs from the concert in Paris. This infuriated Billie's team and this also just strengthen Taylor's number and alas - Billie's new album debuted at #2 in Billboard 200.
Taylor supports younger artists and that is a fact. Especially Billie. But I think Taylor was somewhat personally attacked with her interview, because if Taylor Swift does this, it becomes magnified, blown out of proportion and criticized. But if other artist do exact same thing - it goes unnoticed.
In my opinion, Taylor just taught Billie a lesson. If she was more cautious with her mouth, maybe Taylor fans could have streamed and bought the album and propelled it to 1. Sure - the multiple vinyl issue was more general, industry wide phenomenon BUT the comment about the 3 hour show? No, it was clear directed to her because Beyonce is not on tour anymore, so she is somehow spared but Taylor who is continuing her Eras Tour and is the only touring artist now with 3.5 hour show length.

I think it also comes down to promotion of the album. Taylor is touring right now so there is no time for promotion by interviews and during folklore she couldn’t do a lot of press as well. She found a way to overcome that issue by pushing the different variants.
I dislike that but it doesn’t affect me I didn’t buy any copy and I don’t plan to. Billie is right about the environmental impact though.
However, I also think that some people really like to collect different variants and for them it is really fun to do that.

What I noticed since folklore, was that when Taylor would release a “limited sale” of cd/ vinyl variants, you don’t know if they would ever come back. For folklore they didn’t on the uk store, but for others albums after they did. It just creates fear and I wish she would just release album merch all at once so I can just do one order instead of loads and delivery costs are more and is not good for the environment. I love getting my music in physical CD form then burning them to go on my phone. I love CDs as I feel the booklet and cd is a piece of art with it. Plus I own it and don’t own Taylor’s music on streaming.

It’s kind of dumb considering Taylor only has 4 variants and each one has a different cover, back cover, packaging, BOOK and a bonus track.. whereas others just have different colours and maybe a different colour

I dont think Taylor would be criticized for releasing a “5th” variant to ttpd since its a whole separate album with 15 tracks unlike midnights which had less than 10. (Also swifties are waiting for her to release a physical copy of the anthology!)

ppl think way too deep into this billie and taylor have two different fan bases and one person releasing something isnt gonna throw off their whole album and take all their fans and sure its not the best thing to do but at the end of the day they are both artists trying to promote their new albums it doesn’t have to be a competition all the time two people can release music at the same time it shouldnt be this big of a problem. EVERYONE just needs to lay off because another artist putting something out isnt forcing you to stop listening to something else everyone can listen to whatever they want without it needing to be a problem you dont have to put people against eachother all the time.

I think its more part of marketing strategy from her label, rather than Taylor herself. They dont own the master & most likely Taylor also got bigger portion from her album sales compared to any other artists..so they need to compensate for those losses..
Anyway i never have any complaint about it..if u want to buy, u buy. If u dont, then dont. And i dont think ANYBODY should make ANY issue from this..especially if they consider themselves a Swifties..COZ NOBODY EVER FORCES U TO BUY coz u can always STREAM IT FOR FREE. And that doesnt make u less of a Swifties compared to those who has bought EVERY variants she has ever releases like me.
And about chart dominance, Billy's team should rescheduled about her album released..NOT too close to Taylor's. Taylor's DID that with RedTv to avoid competing with Adele eventhough she has announced the date months in advance. Instead of complaining..they should've studied Taylor's previous strategies & organised it better 😶😶

People need to realise that its not a connection to taylor when commenting. But they know strategically what to comment.
Who cares if Taylor wanted to do variants during which she started with folklore. Its so smart to create a clock (since it represents midnights) so youre basically buying a $60 clock, an option some fans would love and think will look cool in their rooms, which why not? That IS cool and Taylor yes, gets more 3 more extra sales. Its not like everyone got all 4. Its not cheating, its bloody genius. That doesnt take away her value of being the best seller. She clearly knows how to sell but regardless, even if she didn't do variants, lets be honest, she will still be the highest seller and be successful. You got to have a business mind in the business besides just talent. Just because she is business minded ( but also thinks of cool things like clocks, wanting to pay to hear her memos) ..why not. Shes at her highest peak .. actually lets be real.. shes completely legendary and she hasnt felt this since 1989 really. Imagine how amazing she would feel breaking so many records aswell. Why wouldnt she want to keep it up? Billie made some comments before releasing her album. So ofcourse all attention went on Taylor, like it does because she not only gets herself money but everyone else. You, the youtuber with more clicks. The media. And now billie definitely was in the headlines everywhere atm during her album release. Its Taylor's FAME thats the monster! We dont talk about any other artist who does variants. Only Taylor! She just released her newest albums not long ago. You KNOW she will be doing variants/etc. Its because they didn't expext it to become even more successful than Midnights which is crazy consideding her eras tour and just how big of an impact she made. So ofcourse it was likely her album would be #1 for weeks. If anything i think Billies team wanted to be the ones to possibly knock it off. Because Taylor is everyones competition. Remember.. the more they sell... the more their TEAM be making money too.
and are we honestly really still talking about her being silent politically aswell. In 2024. We dont need to force Taylor to be political! Or anything!
    Taylor is not a scapegoat.
I think Taylor wants to leave her mark as big as she can. Break records as high as she can. She was in hiding for a long time! Allow her to enjoy being iconic.

I agree with a lot of these being issues EXCEPT FOR chart buffing. It is not her job to protect Billie's chart standing. If you can't maintain your chart standing, you just can't. She is not responsible for other artist's fame. She is only responsible for her own success.

Taylor is just a part of the discussion because she’s a big deal in the industry which is why so many people ride or die for her regardless of her mistakes. I don’t think Billie meant ill will towards Taylor but most people love to put words in their mouths to fuel a narrative. To be clear I love both of these women however I just don’t love the way the fans act towards them.

i think you overstated how much people actually want to have every single song on a physical edition. we, as taylor fans, know very well that every song is going to be released on streaming sooner or later, nobody is forcing us to buy anything. i personally just buy one copy of the album and then i just go on and listen on spotify. also it should be said that billie actually released more version of her album than taylor, both physical (8 variants) and digital (she has the released the whole album slowed down and sped up). and what really rubbed me the wrong way is how hypocritical she has been with her talk about how she doesn't care about the charts just for then trying so hard and looking desperate to get to number one (and she failed). she shouldn't speak negatively on things that she also does and she shouldn't be throwing shade at taylor (who has never said anything even slightly shady towards billie). in the end, this is a business and there's only one top stop.

    Both side narrative
First of all, no one forces anyone to buy any album Taylor clearly has a devoted fanbase which clearly she earnt through her tasteful (to fans) music.
Second of all. Taylor is just playing the game as others are, to profit from a business, you must use tactics to make the target market want the product, so taylor succeeding in that isnt doing anything bad but fulfilling customer needs and making profit from it. In other words, Don't hate the player, hate the game.
Third of all Billie also has like 8 album variants of her new album, which is what she acknowledged that she herself does this, therefore stop putting them against eachother
Lastly, Yall even starting this whole fued thing is just pathetic because clearly devoted fans would die to protect a devoted queen, they're both queens ignore what the media is saying, at the end of the day, they both make multiple variants
if she claims she never meant it for taylor then she didnt? I dont get why we have to assume she did when she claimed she didnt.
Its pathetic of billie to even call ANYONE out when shes doing it herself, stay silent and promote ur own business not push people down
Its pathetic for taylor to be making confusing albums, one album + one delux
at the end of the day, its music, we listen to it, no one forces anyone to buy anything other than being a devoted fan, they're both musicians making music for PROFIT which they would both aquire MONEY from so therefore they're just promoting their business, there's worse stuff affecting the environment than album vynils, would devoted fans who buy the albums even throw them away after spending a good $30 on them? i dont think so.
    Im a fan of both
