I watched an interview of Willem Defoe, he said he fought to get this part, because back then, making movies from comics wasn’t all that big yet, and people were questioning on him why he chose this role, he said it was different and it ended up being fun to do. Happy Willem Defoe had fun making it ❤️
When comicbook movies as a genre were still just a small demographic in a wider variety of movie genres. Mainstream marvel movies really took off after the original blade and xmen movies. Dafoe committed to the film because he knew it would be a box office smash. He knew he was part of something prestigious. From the public’s perspective 2002 was a year in which superheroes had very little stakes in the blockbuster territory but people working inside Hollywood could see the rise and potential of this genre. Twenty years later and comicbook films have dominated the cinematic landscape. Some would say that the market is oversaturated.
“You n’ me, we’re exceptional…” The delivery of that line is chilling. Great way to get across his philosophy. People admire and raise up those who are unique and powerful, there’s nobody else as unique and powerful as them so why shouldn’t they be on top. Great scene!

Joker: "In their final moments, people show you who they really are." Jameson when threatened by GG: "I don't know who he is, his stuff comes in the mail!"
Green Goblin nicely sums up how battle with superheroes and supervillains go, and he makes it clear he doesn't care if the battles end with him dead as long as he has his fun.
Not really, that’s the Joker. Green Goblin wants power and he’ll kill anyone who gets in his way. The point he was making was that fighting until they both die, because he won’t stop until victorious, is pointless compared them joining forces to achieve his goals. He reveals his secret identity and makes a sympathy play JUST to confuse Peter and stab him in the back in the final fight because Peter beat him physically and likely might’ve killed him.
@@danielwood6833 I was thinking about his speech in light of what we saw of him in No Way Home. Plus in this movie we don't see the Green Goblin has much of goal beyond being evil, his actions at the climax have no purpose beyond making Spider Man suffer.

I always loved how in the Rami trilogy, Spider-Man and his villains had very comic booky moments like with how over the top the Green Goblin was at times, but also had these very human elements blended into their scenes. It adds so many layers to the Goblin's character and makes some people wonder whether if he's really a mad lunatic or a genius who's outlook on life is very warped. Green Goblin's so crazy that he sings when he's destroying and hurting people, yet at the same time also gives compelling arguments that make the audience question whether he's right and Spider-Man is wrong to try to keep being a hero.
Although Green Goblin’s ulterior motives for wanting Spider-Man as a partner were not revealed, it’s likely he desired power since Spidey is the only one who can stop him.
While Goblin knows that Spidey is the only one who can stop him, he gives Spidey the choice of joining him willingly. In their next fight, Spidey makes it clear he refuses and Goblin comes to the conclusion Spidey must be eliminated if he cannot be turned to the dark side and continues to stand in his way.

the analogy between goblin’s proposal in Spider-man and Joker’s speech during interrogation in the Dark knight is evident, both dialogues reveal to be not so wrong after all, that does the spectator think, “you and I are not so different” and “you complete me” are the perfect representation of the hero/villain relationship, they do have more in common than what it seems.
Well that was the dynamic. Both had been gifted extraordinary powers but how they used them is what defined them. Norman used his power for his own selfish reasons. Peter used his to help those who could not. And yet it goes deeper than that. Norman by his nature is a jaded individual who only sees the worst in people. While Spider-man was selling papers, the Bugle was doing fine before Spider-man photos. I really do think he knew the Goblin wasn't going to talk to the photographer in a polite way. The Goblin already killed a few people.
Neoblackdragon Actually, Green Goblin wouldn't kill Peter as Peter was the only one who could lead him to Spider Man. However, Green Goblin wouldn't ask Peter nicely as you have mentioned

Spider Speedster Z I understand. GG has no intention of killing Peter, but that doesn't explain why Johan Jamerson didn't sell out Peter.

I watched an interview of Willem Defoe, he said he fought to get this part, because back then, making movies from comics wasn’t all that big yet, and people were questioning on him why he chose this role, he said it was different and it ended up being fun to do.
Happy Willem Defoe had fun making it ❤️

William dafoe....the man who familiarized me with memes
When comicbook movies as a genre were still just a small demographic in a wider variety of movie genres. Mainstream marvel movies really took off after the original blade and xmen movies. Dafoe committed to the film because he knew it would be a box office smash. He knew he was part of something prestigious. From the public’s perspective 2002 was a year in which superheroes had very little stakes in the blockbuster territory but people working inside Hollywood could see the rise and potential of this genre. Twenty years later and comicbook films have dominated the cinematic landscape. Some would say that the market is oversaturated.
I think it's also fair to say he nailed it!
“You n’ me, we’re exceptional…”
The delivery of that line is chilling. Great way to get across his philosophy. People admire and raise up those who are unique and powerful, there’s nobody else as unique and powerful as them so why shouldn’t they be on top. Great scene!

Gaming Minds of Awesomeness I think Gary Oldman could play Norman Osborn in the MCU. I can't unheard Gary Oldman whenever Green Goblin speaks here, especially when he said "WHO'S THE PHOTOGRAPHER TAKING THE PICTURE OF SPIDER-MAN?"
Tbh William Dafoe as Green Goblin is much scarier than mysterio in far from home and vulture in homecoming as well
Right?! As a kid I loved it. He was awesome and it made the movie so much better. Good villains like this make a good superhero movies. Time to bring this kind of green goblin back in action.

He had a type of mutual respect for Spiderman because he viewed him as exceptional. He wanted to remove him from the equation if possible but he have respect for spideys power. Its a great dynamic
I think for Goblin, at that time it doesn't matter who Spider-man really was, if was a random guy that he never see before? It really doesn't make the difference for him. Lucky for Peter, but Norman finds out the truth later on, so...

The most terrifying villains are NOT the ones who look scary or laugh menacingly. The most terrifying villains are the ones where you realize they are partially right in their assessment of our world (but have chosen the completely wrong way to remedy it)! When our society goes awry, it can produce countless monsters of the worst kind.
People fear what, or whom, they cannot control.
@@jeremygonzalez9270 The Day The Earth Stood Still is a powerful example of this. Humans hurt Klaatu because they fear him (and can't control him), but then when he calls out their destructive ambitions, their fear turns into utter hatred. the analogy between goblin’s proposal in Spider-man and Joker’s speech during interrogation in the Dark knight is evident, both dialogues reveal to be not so wrong after all, that does the spectator think, “you and I are not so different” and “you complete me” are the perfect representation of the hero/villain relationship, they do have more in common than what it seems.
A philosophy he points out to Harry during Thanksgiving because that's what he's been surrounded with. People who only want to exploit him and toss him aside when no longer useful hence his line to Peter telling him that the city will eventually hate him and root for his downfall.
That's what separates Norman from Peter.

I love the depth behind JJJ's character in this scene. At first, you'd think he's just a scumbag tabloid executive that's only willing to twist the truth every time he speaks, for his own gain. But here, he twisted the truth not for himself, but for Peter's safety. He had nothing to gain from lying to Goblin like this. He easily could have said it was Peter, or he could have thrown the name of his least favorite employee. But no, he went with the extremely directionless answer of "I don't know who he is."
