Idk why but the idea of Goblin throwing Peter into a building then immediately throwing a bomb into is such a brutal idea. Like he didn’t even think to give him a moment to breath the moment he recovers the bomb is already in his face. It’s such a well done scene because you don’t expect it
this is literally how i play the spider man games. specifically throwing people around and only webbing them after they've hit a wall or floor at max velocity. then when i got the miles game, I just reversed the process. pull them to me, then blast them into a coma. so satisfying.
That's something I love about this fight. It bugs me when superheroes and villains get in a really good punch and then stand in a heroic pose as their opponent gets back up. If they actually wanted to win the fight, they'd take advantage of their opponent being on the ground! I'm not saying I want heroes to kill people, but you don't pause to take in the fact that you got in a really good punch. Green Goblin throwing the bomb immediately after sending Peter into the wall makes him a fantastic and effective villain.
Yeah that’s what I love about this scene. Usually it feels like the villain purposely holds back so the hero can get back in the fight but this scene he was just relentless. 5 year old me thought he was gonna actually kill Spider-Man 😂.
To those confused, Goblin wanted to kill himself along with Spidey. He revealed his identity. All the cards are on the table. He was ready to die, and if he was dying, he wanted to make damn sure he's taking Spiderman's life along with him. At 3:41, he even tells Parker, "gimme your hand" and offers a hug AFTER positioning the glider. If those arent signs of a suicidal psychopath, I dont know what is.
the biggest clue in the movie was when he even said outright “we could destroy... cause the deaths of countless innocents in selfish battle again and again and again until we’re BOTH dead. is that what you want?” in his eyes, this was clearly the road peter chose.
Love how his suit gets torn apart in every big battle because it simply symbolises that his suit is just a piece of cloth but the real hero is him and not the suit. The real and best spider man
You know I want to say this if Tom Hollands Spiderman where to fight Willem Dafoe Green Goblin at full straight and with all his weapons. Tom Holland Spiderman would be dead. In Spiderman no way home Tom Holland Spiderman fought Willem Dafoe Green Goblin he wasn't at full straight and didn't have all his weapons give Willem Dafoe Green Goblin full straight and all his weapons Tom Holland's Spiderman is dead.

It's a shame we don't see fight scenes like this anymore, especially in the MCU. Raimi really wanted the audience to feel like Peter wouldn't survive and holy shit did he succeed, the fact that they used no music made the entire scene really hit hard. He's smart but it's really just spidersense doing most of the heavy lifting. The camera pan to the glider literally mirrors when he first triggered it (his fight with Flash Thompson)

@@jbrfr94 True. I think it's a sound that, in almost any other context would be ridiculed for sounding cheesy/overdone. But it works because the film is selling just how brutally Peter is getting beatdown, it hurts A LOT (plus that he is about 18 in this film) and it's completely believable for him to squeal in pain at such a beatdown.
@@TheShadowWithoutaDoubt Legend has it, Green Goblin's helmet secretly incorporated an empty ammo clip stolen from an abandoned M1 Garand. The repeated haymakers from Spider-Man forced the M1 clip out of Goblin's helmet, hence the iconic ping sound.

@@limdennis813 He went through the brick wall with so much speed, and considering Peter's suit is made of spandex/fabric, it likely didn't take much. Peter attempts to slow down his momentum with the web, but the glass panel abruptly shows up. Crashing through glass at high speed can severely scratch a person up, if they don't crash through it efficiently. Also, Peter's eye lens is ripped off after breaking through the glass, which is another small detail.
It sounds weird but I always appreciated the earnestness in TM’s eyes for Spider-Man. You can feel the mixture of shock and the continued loss of innocence in his face at the end of the scene.
Somebody pointed this out to me, and i see it now. When Willem is portraying the Goblin, he adds extra rasp to his voice. Notice when Norman comes out of the mask, and he says "Don't let him take me again!", the rasp returns midsentence. Norman was pushed back in, and i think that was a nice little detail.
Green Goblin was legitimately menacing in this scene. A problem with most MCU villains is the movies or the heroes don't take them seriously. They're constantly looking to throw witty comments at them. But there's none of that in this scene, just Goblin beating the hell out of Spider-Man, taunting him by saying he's going to kill his girlfriend, which sends Spidy into a full rage.
Kids will never understand the simplicity of 2000s superhero movies. They were goofy, but at the same time serious. More caring and artistic than anything else. These movies now just spit explosions and cgi in your face with no real emotion, just to make you spend your money for terrible sequels.
There is some genuinely good stuff these days but the early 2000s renaissance of super hero movies was truly special. The tone of the first Spider-Man is crazy unique. Just this battle is visceral, personal, and realistic to a degree.
The 2000s movie beats endgame (effects not story) in every type of way. Everything is almost real here in spiderman, but the spiderman today and all the marvel movies are all fake CGI.
What's sad is that Norman says "Don't tell Harry [about who I was]." It's a throwback to his conversation with Harry. In the beginning of the movie he told Harry never to be ashamed of who he was. However, him being ashamed of being the green goblin shows how much Norman has changed for the worse and kinda closes his character ark in a sad but "satisfying" way.
You all realize before Peter says I had a father, Norman was talking in his own voice, his own personality. But after Peter says, “I have a father, and his name was Ben Parker” Norman quickly turns back to goblin. You can notice the change in his voice when he says, “Godspeed Spider-Man” at 4:03
I think the only time when "actual" Norman speaks to Peter is when he gets impaled by the glider asking him to not tell Harry. When he asked Peter to take his hand I'm betting you 100% that he would have let the the glider impale him and Peter.
Goblin put the glider into position mid sentence, it was goblin the whole time he was trying to trick Spider-Man Norman and the goblin may have been two separate entities in normans head but in this scene it was all goblin
What makes this fight scene so good is the emphasis on the sounds, with no background music. only once goblin starts monologuing does the music kick in
It's bad enough he had to fight the green goblin and got beat up in the process, but finding out it was Mr. Osbourne, and he had a final request to not tell Harry, made things even more difficult in the later movies, trying to explain to Harry that he didn't kill him, but him being blinded by his rage and his quest for vengeance on spiderman only makes it that much harder on Peter, honestly, he was a great friend, even though he threw that grenade at Harry and damaged his face, in the end he was a great friend, this Spider-man trilogy will always be the original and the only REAL spider-man franchise to me! Excellent job by all the actors and by the writers!
One thing I love about this scene is despite how dark the location is, the lighting is still well-exposed enough to have everything be clearly visible. If this were filmed today, there's no doubt that it'd be hard to see and murky as hell.
Watched this at a re-release a few hours ago. Probably one of the best scenes ive ever scene in a movie theater. The whole movie is a masterclass of how to make great cinema.
MCU Spiderman is nice and all, but is way too soft. Peter gets the hell beaten out of him, he's bloody and tired, but he still holds his own without any fancy Iron-Man tech or Superhero backup. This Spidey will always be grittier and more brutal, and in my opinion, better.
@@inakipericon2810 he hardly did shit against the vulture in the final fight. He was getting lucky that the vulture’s suit was getting destroyed because of the plane. Not really spiderman. And to top it off, the vulture wasn’t that much of a threat. He just flew mostly lol
@Ted Wilson every spiderman is the FRIENDLY neighborhood spiderman. And yes to an extent you’re right about the victory part but It still shows how lil MCU spiderman does against his villains compared to the other spidermen
4:12 , I always like to think this was the moment Norman Osborn was brought back to his universe after No Way Home when all the villains get sent back. Despite being healed , he died anyway.
Here's the thing. When he was sucked into the MCU, his glider went along with him. Holland destroyed the glider and tried to kill him with it, so... assuming he'd get brought back along with the wrecked glider, there shouldn't be anything that'd kill him. Honestly, I think the only one who may be screwed is Doc Ock unless he was returned after the artificial sun was destroyed.
That mention of uncle Ben, made this scene iconic as it always happens, a thought of Uncle Ben give Peter power and Luck, Name of uncle Ben don't let him Deviate from his path, keep him in his senses and Help him taking right decision

@@vineezyproductions9638 Gwen would die sooner or later. The most annoying thing about Andrew's Peter is that he was destined to be Spider-Man. Complete disrespect to the Ditko-Stan Lee and even Romita comics.
This demonstrates how strong Tobey spidey were compare to Tom Spidey. Goblin was literally laughing at Tom's punches to his face. Tobey was punching him with a helmet on yet he begged to stop.
I don’t think it had anything to do with Tom’s punches, I think Goblin is genuinely insane and got some sort of sick rush from being battered. Joker does the same thing. He laughs hysterically when Batman’s beating on him in The Dark Knight. Batman doesn’t have super strength but he was hitting Joker pretty hard. Tom’s Spidey was beating Goblin with the intention to kill, he has no reason to pull his punches.
Plus he didn’t beg Tobey’s Peter to stop hitting him because he was doing damage, he begged for him to stop because Norman regained control momentarily.
@@ThatOneDude521 i don’t think that’s entirely true, the way i think it’s meant to be seen is that, goblin is getting a beat down and he has one plan left, he was gonna play victim so peter would take his hand and he was gonna kill them both together with his glider because at that point he had no cards left, he was losing in hand to hand combat, and he already revealed his identity, kind of like a final plan thing

Absolutely love this scene. It really potrays Peter accurately. He's always holding back and can get overwhelmed even with his spider sense. But when he's pushed and his loved ones are threatened directly, he becomes a whole other person when he stops holding back.
I love how Peter’s smart enough to not fall for any of Goblin’s manipulation tactics once he reveals himself.
He's smart but it's really just spidersense doing most of the heavy lifting. The camera pan to the glider literally mirrors when he first triggered it (his fight with Flash Thompson)

Ikr, you can really see the intensity in his face. That's good acting right there!
I’m glad someone else pointed this out. I like the intensity in his face too. You can really tell he’s had enough from taking Goblin’s attacks.
1:04 I also like the closeup here showing that pissed off expression much better and you can see just how focused he is in trapping Goblin with his webs. I like to imagine that he’s thinking that he finally has the upper hand now. Not to mention how noticeably he’s drenched in sweat from the heat of the explosion and from just how strenuous of a situation he is in.

@@limdennis813 He went through the brick wall with so much speed, and considering Peter's suit is made of spandex/fabric, it likely didn't take much.

Hulk 2003 and Punisher 2004 don't get enough love.
There is some genuinely good stuff these days but the early 2000s renaissance of super hero movies was truly special. The tone of the first Spider-Man is crazy unique. Just this battle is visceral, personal, and realistic to a degree.
