Bea & Matt FYI - For his live sound, Billy Gibbons' 1959 Les Paul Standard "Pearly Gates" is the reference sound for all of his other guitars. On an episode of Rig Rundown, Gibbons' tech explains the process. He captures a G chord from Pearly Gates on a spectrum analyzer. He then captures the same chord from a his other guitars. One by one he adjust a multi-band EQ until the other guitar's curve matches Pearly Gates (as much as close as possible). He saves the EQ setting for recall when that instrument is used in the set. It sounds very scientific, and more than a little homogenized, but it's a fairly straight forward process. The plus side is a consistent sound across the board - even the TV-Jones equipped instruments are made to sound close to the PAFs in Pearly Gates. I think it really works for Gibbons live show due to the unorthodox style of instruments he plays live (fur covered, small-boxy shapes, etc.). I imagine some of them might not sound that great on their own.
Actually...for the last few tours he has played a Custom SG. I saw him in last year in DC and he played this the whole show until the encore. www.gibson.com/Billy-Gibbons-Ultimate-SG.aspx
Mike Adams: I caught them late last year too. One of the loudest shows I've ever seen - and it was outside! He played several guitars on that night.
Also, Billy said many times that the sound of a cranked Marshall 1959 slp really had defined their live sound. Just listen to their early live recordings. Billy smokes the hell out of the super lead!
I got lucky and saw them last year in a club in DC. Insanely loud. I always wear ear protection to shows and it was still too loud.
I saw this too, I think Billy Gibbons plays alot of different guitars nowadays - The Bolins,. Gretschs and Telecasters, purely for the looks, weight and playability. They all sound pretty similar, also I didn't his sound was so fuzzy, just lots of bass and no treble.
MARSHALL....MARSHALL....MARSHALL. That was awesome. lol
No no no no fuzz on La grange its a pure overdriven amp!!!!!
Christian Lindqvist yeah I was thinking this too
Christian Lindqvist exactly, it was completely off
It's actually fuzz. Take a fuzz face on about 1/3 fuzz into a driven amp and you get that really awesome tone.
Diax1324 ive played with lots of fuzzes and I asure you that there is no fuzz pedal in that tone. its kind of a messup on their part
Diax1324 Googled a bit and found: Tush’ was Pearly Gates, my beloved Les Paul, played through the same Marshall Super Lead as La grange
Hard to sound like Billy on a Budget.
Sound like The Cult is what’s needed?!?!?! Nice job as always! Thanks
also would need to play with 7's or 8's
YOURE FINALLY BACK. BOUT FUCKING TIME LADS.
YOU ARE WELCOME!
PLEASE?
PRETTY PLEASE!!! with a cherry on top and i'll send a call girl to the shop!
Rabea looks like hes lost a bit of weight. Cheers mates, glad your back!
A lot of weight by the looks of him!
I love how most comments are like "that's easy! It's just a cranked Marshall!!" When all these iconic bands sound so distinct and people claim they all just cranked a marshall haha pretty hilarious
You underestimate the versatility of a cranked Marshall. You can really get a variety of tones just by changing the dynamics of your picking or messing with your volume and tone knobs
It’s almost like different types of Marshall’s, guitars, pickups, wood, fingers, string gauge, equipment used to record the song, ect. All effect the tone?!?!? Woah crazy.
Great to have you back! Next time please do Joe Bonamassa! :)))
Come on, that's too easy: Les Paul > Way Huge Overrated Special > Fender(ish) amp
You can say that about most artists. It's just "etc etc etc"
Then go do that. I like the series :)
Well, i really like this series - don't get me wrong. But Bonamassa is one of those guitarists who could play literally anything and still sound like themselves; they don't rely on gear that much. In addition to that his current rig isn't very spectacular, so I guess it would be quite a short video.
+error dude, who cares. I'd still love to see them try and sound like JB. Also, to say he's not reliant of gear is true to a degree. With that said, I don't think you'll find Joe without a tweed fender, and a les Paul at any of his gigs. Still, his tone can be somewhat difficult to get. As for this show being redundant because of rig rundowns; so what. The show is very enjoyable to watch. It's more about seeing how close they can get with a limited budget, and amps/pedals/guitars that those who's tones they are trying to match wouldn't use because they can afford whatever they want to use. It's a great series, and you obviously watch it.
do a sounds like CCR, without busting the bank
CCR is a tough one, due to the uniqueness of the gear Fogerty used, specifically the Kustoms and modded Rickenbacker. Though, a Fender amp and a Les Paul was a setup at one point
Always love a new W/O Busting the Bank episode. Even if I'm not really interested in the artist/band.
Probably my favorite Sounds Like to date. BANG ON for the Gotsa Get Paid tone, hands down. Considering how thick and secretly complex that particular song is it's dam fine work to nail this down without the exact same gear. Way to go Matt & Rabea! Loved it.
Sound like evh, I reaaally wanna see Bea play some van halen
skip to 2019 may and they did.
Glad you guys are back! love the series....However just to give a little constructive criticism on this particular episode, the tone was way way off and didn't sound very good. The issue hands down is the guitar and pick ups (the BlackStar HT series is a pretty good amp but still would've been better to go with a marshall or Laney), All of the zz top records are recorded with the 59 pearly gates les paul....which are LOW OUTPUT original PAF pickups. So when trying to emulate that tone with a chinese made guitar with HIGH OUTPUT pickups, it just doesn't work. Mind you, It's understandable why you thought he used higher output pickups (due to the 'live' show guitar choices, he doesn't take the pearly gates out on tour) but the big point with that is he runs ALL of those 'other' (i.e. not pearly gates) guitars through an EQ set up that makes them as close in tone as possible to the 59' pearly gates (which is why no matter what guitar he's playing sounds very close in tone to the previous guitar used). This would be awesome to see as a "by busting the bank" edition as you could use an R8 or R9 custom shop re-issue and match them with a marshall or Laney and get a whole lot closer. That's just my opinion though, and hopefully some of this info will find it's way to you and help in the future. Good attempt regardless and I'm so glad that NAMM is over and we can get more episodes of this series. Love the work and passion you guys put into this show and can't wait till next time. Keep rocking!
I DARE you guys to do a sound like Motörhead - Guitar AND Bass!
Fleig fast Eddie or Phil?
Phil, but any would be cool really, I'd me more interested in them trying to replicate the Lemmy sound!
dickfagsandmotherfuc the classic strat blues tone on Capricorn maybe?
crank an old marshall. done.
(galluen kruger for 90s guitar tones)
I was thinking this too, it would be nice to get a look at the bass section in Andertons as well
Sound like:
-Avenged sevenfold
-Chuck Berry
-Wolfmother
-Bon Jovi
-Van Halen
-Brian May?
Blur or the smiths please
JOHNNY MARR FUCKING LEGEND
Air Gameplay yes please
for Graham Coxon he had a signature tele, so Squier Tele or a Fender, go through a Vox amp or a Fender, and throw in a fuzz for the Coffee and TV solo
Smiths would be good
Yup! Johnny marr would be great!
05:26 - Pete suggesting "Marshall" over and over cracks me up every time :D
Sound Like Gary Clark Jr?
fuck yes. Yes. yes yes
Adam The Fuzz!!!
Um, casino and fuzz pedal?
fucking YESSSSS
He uses a vibroverb, but any fender amp with them would work. It's the speaker cab that's interesting. I believe the vibroverb has a 15 inch Jensen speaker, and a 10 inch
I'm so happy to see people saying sound like RUSH or Alex Lifeson. The man deserves it. I asked a few times with no luck but, maybe things will change and they can do it. Early days should be easy even up to 2112 but hemispheres might be harder to do within budget.
Welcome back guys!!!
Can you do some of the more requested onses which are
Johnny Marr - The Smiths
Jonny Greenwood, Ed O'brien and Thom Yorke - Radiohead
Buckethead
Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil - Soundgarten
Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman/Gary Holt - Slayer
Steve Vai
Paul Gilbert - Mr Big/Racer X
Graham Coxon - Blur
Joe Bonamassa
John Petrucci - Dream Theater
Eric Johnson
Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman/Chris Broderick/Kiko Loureiro - Megadeth
Synyster Gates and Zacky Venegance - A7X
Brian Setzer - Stray Cats
Metallica (BY busting the bank)
and a lesser known guitarist who i like which i want them to see do because his solos are immense and fun for the john petrucci lovers (Jeff Williams)
For Jeff that is a challenge but i'd say Musicman JP60 (cos they can't get a JP6), Blackstar HT Club 40 or Marshall DSL40C, and a Wah pedal
You can't do a Zappa , there is no way in hell.. His tone can change on a dime.. Same really with Buckethead..
Jon Spencer Blues explosion!! Jon spencers super low fuzzes and vintage guitars, and Judah Bauers super foxy telesound!!
Btw good job with this one!
Get a third guy and sound like Iron Maiden.
suffocater666 they did Maiden already
suffocater666 sounds like with 3 guitar rigs would be awesome
Christian Hannan sounds like periphery also 3 guitar players
suffocater666 how about a flashback.. Leatherwolf had 3 guitarists as well!!
they need a BY busting iron maiden, Dave Murray strat, Victory V100, Cry baby wah, reverb, chorus there's dave's rig for ya
for Adrian a USA Adrian Smith Jackson, Marshall JCM and i think that's his rig
and this time they need a 3rd person to be Steve Harris
What are the odds that this pops up the same week I am re-learning all of my favorite ZZ Top songs? Good work!
how to sound like MEGADETH
They won't, I've asked more than a few times. And they would have to use the Marshall ;-)
Edoardo Vergerio they already did Metallica
I think the heroin they'd need to fuel the mustaine ego would bust the bank before they even buy a guitar.
Zachary Harwell aye because they're the same? fuck off.
Harry Neuer aww. did that hurt your feelings?
Glad to see you guys back! Cheers!
A sounds like J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. would be great
Squier J Mascis Jazzmaster, Egnater Tweaker on UK setting, Big Muff.
I think you were fairly close and sound great. I picked up the Trestle Homer's 8 track when it came out and it changed my life . it is the reason I play to this day. I've use a lot of gear to capture that sound but my marshall is the rock I
stand on when I play. I have used chandler tube driver, which actually has a example of how to dial in the tone in the original instructions manual. lately I have used a MRX distortion with a tone city king of Blues which creates a narrow but different group of his sounds. I have recently acquired the Way Huge Conquistador and it fills the fuzz role well most especially when used with my Electromagnetic. See you at the Pearly Gates...
Sound Like Rival Sons - Without Busting The Bank
Scott Holiday has a massive tone and board full of all kinds of cool boutique fuzzes so I second this :D
I went to their concert last night in cologne. Such a monster sound!
Francisco Camerini Yes! Been asking for this for ages.
Francisco Camerini definitely ;-)
Rabea Massaad With all the love I can hope to transmit via RUclips comment, I want you to know that the Blackstar HT amps are not valve amps: the “overdrive channel” is a built-in distortion pedal, and the phase inverter (which is critical to the sound of a cranked valve amp) is solid state. That hybrid architecture (the “H” in “HT”) greatly complicates using pedals, as you have discovered.
Do Alex Lifeson of Rush! Fantastic guitar player and mostly underrated!
rolling stones by busting the bank
i know for Keith they will use the following: Fender Artist Inspired Telecaster, Fender Twin Reverb, EHX Satisfaction Fuzz
will parker agree, but what about sound like the stones by playing it good???!!!
Any chance of getting a screenshot of the pedals' settings in the future for different songs? Thank you for your wonderful videos guys!
Do a sound like Django Reinhardt! :)
aumenarys Get an acoustic gypsy guitar. Now fuck up your hand.
Just shred with three fingers on whatever has strings near you.
warnerww83 whatever has 12 gauge silver strings
Hunter Jones HHAHAHAHA!
Just my favorite player of all time...usually : ) Django always makes me smile
No way is the Reverend Willie G's sound THAT fuzzy.
Please sound like the beatles
this one was reaaaally hard , billy's hands are the key, the equipment was right on the ballpark but billy's tone is him, end of story
just like every other famous guitarists.. If you gave Francis Rossi, Clapton's Les Paul or Strat Francis Rossi would sound like Francis Rossi just like if.. Hetflield played Dave Gilmore's Strat.. Hetfield would sound like Hetfield. It's all in the tone in the fingers and the players style and imagination.
Sound like Joe Bonamassa or Eric Johnson.
That would be great.. But, they're gonna have a hard time sounding like eric or Joe with any gear at any price, good luck..
Joe is actually easy. Fender Tweed AND Bassman, a custom overdrive and a $100,000+ 59 Les Paul 'burst
Yea and then you have to play like him. Yea right.
'Gots to Get Paid' sounded fantastic. And I haven't read good things about that Slash octave.
sounds like joe walsh or eagles
Joe Walsh would be a good one.
Scott Van ammers Yes!!!
Welcome back, we've missed you. Oh, and Happy New Year!
Sound like THE BEATLES
These really all sounded very fluffy and low. Despite the 'he doesn't use any treble' thing his sound is definitely trebley, it just comes from somewhere other than the treble knob.
His tone is far more of a driven marshal with a tubescreamer or OD, especially when you get to things like the solo on La Grange. I've gotten way closer with a vintage OD into a blackstar with an EQ in front with PAF pickups, that's like an $800 budget right there.
$100 Boss EQ, $50 overdrive, $400 guitar with $120 pickup upgrade, $200 amp, give or take if you get things used or different model.
metallica by busting the bank....
Done it :) ruclips.net/video/06FPJniL0D8/видео.html
Andertons Music Co that wasn't busting the bank.. Be good to see you guys blow a wad of cash on Metallica sounds like.
Jason D yea that's true :)
HELLBLACK120 it would be sick to see a by busting
Andrias joensen it would be amazing
At this point, when Matt and Rabea say "Great guitar for the money." that means, "Get a really good amp to even up your tone." XD
You only need to grow a beard. The gear doesn't matter. You don't even need a guitar or an amp. The beard will do all the magic :D
nice improvement guys! would like to see some overhead pedal shots for when you are talking about the pedals! thnx
Sound like The Beatles or The Eagles
Sounds like Rabea and Matt BY busting the bank. Let them both build their dream rigs and see how it sounds!
Sound like Marty Schwartz!
Andrew Harrison best one 😂😂😂
Andrew Harrison hahaha marty is the worlds greatest guitar player, youll never sound as good as him
I'd rather he just hang out with Lee in a “Captain meets" video.
I'm particularly interested in the tone he has for ''He-heyyyy what's up you guys''. That's his best song imo.
HAHAHAHA
Gibsons, famously has recorded all the songs since the early 70's on a 59 'burst LP called "Pearly Gates". He tours with custom shop replicas of that guitar as well as the others mentioned. But the original recordings are on the 59 'burst
Sound like Johnny Marr, for the millionth time I've asked
Please.
Please, please please, let us get what we want!
I get it, These Things Take Time, but I'm in Panic waiting for them to release this video, that's why I Asked
You need to ask 2 million times :-)....
The word derives from antiquity and is a tribute to the ancient god, Pan. One of the many gods in the mythology of ancient Greece: Pan was the god of shepherds and of woods and pastures. The Greeks believed that he often wandered peacefully through the woods, playing a pipe, but when accidentally awakened from his noontime nap he could give a great shout that would cause flocks to stampede. From this aspect of Pan's nature Greek authors derived the word panikon, “sudden fear,” the ultimate source of the English word: "panic".
Really good. How about by busting the bank. Thanks for the shows. Andertons. My new favorite channel on the tube
sound like the clash
Cortez Glawson - "The only people who put Iced T in Jack Daniels bottles is the Clash baby yeeeeaaaahhh" - David Lee Roth.
nooooooo I wanted them to use the reverand so badly. sick guitar with the perfect quirky vibe for the "Reverand" Billy G
Sound like the offspring - without busting the bank
Dexter and Noodles!
hey Matt and Bea!! you guys should do a video where one guy busts the bank and the other has the budget?
Sounds like Pearl jam???!
Awesome idea
Now done! One of the best in ages, they really nailed the sound IMO.
Their is nothing to Pearl Jams tone's, very easy to do..
Did Rabea lose weight? Great job man. As always, great video
Fast forward 3 years and rab is busting kick flips in his insta.
Sound Like Van Halen (Brownsound)- Without Busting The Bank would be interesting also?
Prayoga Andhika W - Impossible. To my ears at least. I've tried for years, and got close by spending big $. I would rather them do EVH by busting the bank.
Elias011203 TF2 - the Baretta isn't what he used on records, in fact he never used a Baretta. Maybe a few times to promote it. The 5150 was not a Baretta. Good luck getting ahold of a 1969 Marshall Superlead, setting a Variac to 90v, diming that bitch to ten, recording with that given scenario, and designing a Frankenstrat, with a vintage PAF dipped in "sex wax" - among many other secrets, gear and of course, Ed's innovation and technique.
Ed's him self has done a demo of how to get his tone's.. Also Btw i own a OG 69 Marshall Superlead..
Superb as always. Brain May next PLEASE!!!!!
AVENGED SEVENFOLD!!!!
Please... I've been waiting for years...
T Salty I agree
T Salty Shitty Shecter, EMGs, a Peavey 5150 or a Mesa/Boogie and some razor blades. Cause we all know how much A7X fanboys love self-harming. 😂😂👌🏻👌🏻
why dont you like avenged?
a mesa is way too much money so the Peavey 5150 could do good
If you were looking for the tone for Gotsta Get Paid, you got it wrong. Billy Gibbons was playing a butterscotch Telecaster. It was featured recently on sale at Norm's. You could have also saved some money because they have been using Crate amps for the last couple of years.
Have you done DImebag Darrel yet?
Rhodri Davies they have done that
good. will have to look back on that
Rhodri Davies I wanna do a by busting to be honest!
Rabea Massaad Yes! A by busting is a must!
Please do a by busting the bank for dime!
Good to see you back fellas.
do Avenged Sevenfold please!
I bloody love you two guys, I get really excited whenever I see you've done another episode, always a pleasure to watch. I'd love to see you re-visit this one BY Busting the bank. And also please PLEASE do a New York Dolls Without Busting, getting Johnny Thunders' tone would be really informative :D
Keep up the good work and thanks for always being entertaining :)
How about
The Cure... the first few albums
My Bloody Valentine
or Joy Division
Greatest music show on YT
I love this series and I love the ZZ Top sound, but I think this time you did not get it right. Way too much fuzz, La Grange never sounded like this. When people think about ZZ Top, they think the early records, maybe even Eliminator but not this new La Futura thing. Never mind! Give it another try. With or without busting the bank.
TheChinovnik "Maybe even Eliminator"?? The only songs I think really think about other than off the Eliminator album is La Grange, Gotsta Get Paid, Just Got Paid, and maybe Can't Stop Rocking. In my opinion, Eliminator really defines ZZ Top in Classic Rock. Gimme All Your Loving, Sharp Dressed Man, Got me Under Pressure, I Got the Six, If I Could Only Flag Her Down, and Bad Girl aren't even all the ones off Eliminator and thise are songs that instantly come to mind. I don't think I even know what album La Grange is on off the top of my head.
I agree that Eliminator is a great album. Eliminator basically marked the beginning of the video driven phase of their career. Love the music from that era as well. I think Eliminator defines them in 80's music. The stuff before was excellent and is the real classic stuff to a lot of ZZ Top fans. I think the guys did a good job of finding the sound.
TheChinovnik they should do a by busting
Jalan Hart Wrong. The early ZZ top, Debut album, rio grande mud, Fandango, Tres Hombres are really where it's fucking at
TheChinovnik not wise to try to speak for everyone. Maybe it’s just because I had the tape as s kid, but my favorite album of theirs is Recycler. To each their own. I’d say they did a pretty good job in this video.
I agree with Christian, but I'm also pretty sure that Gibbons used a Les Paul for La Grange. That Gretsch/Blackstar/pedal train just sounds too muddy.
BTW, I'm from La Grange!
Nice
Sound like Ritchie Blackmore !! (Deep Purple / Rainbow )
Happy new years boys! Welcome back. Thanks for starting up 2017 with a classic sound. I am sure you will revisit this one with a by busting the bank at some point because as close as you got, the sound was missing something. Probably a few more Fuzz Pedals....
First plea for the new year...Tom Petty and Mike Campbell please.....
You need to do The Smiths/Johnny Marr. Fender have just used his ideas on the new pro series. I think he deserves a vid.
I think they've done Johhny Marr..
Do something where you sound like someone between 500£ or 700£ :D like a special episode "without touching the bank" or something :))
sound like dream theater? please
If you find out that John Petrucci will kill you with his own hands
smooth chocolate cake and a t rex. thats all i have to say
Get a Mesa Mark IV or V
Step 1. Get REALLY good
Pearly Gates was used exclusively with some Fenders on all the old records and makes appearances on all new recordings after. Also uses Fender Tweed amps as well as Marshalls in the studio. overtone5 has a good explanation on his live sound now using an EQ to get a homogeneous sound with all the guitars based on Pearly!
Sound like Richie Sambora of Bon Jovi
sweet man. love it. good to see you back. how bout some gary clark jr next up?
Sounds like Jefferson Airplane!!!
this is one of the best ones
Started badly but ended really well......Alex Lifeson please!
dragon007j I've asked that a few times a year or two ago no luck so far.
Great Sound , I thought Gibbons used a simpler set up , glad you broke it down . I have a Les Paul Custom and I love how it sounds . I will look into stacking pedals like you mentioned .
Nailed it or failed it? Sorry guys but this one is a fail for me.
no it's not! it's a win for me!
Yep. Fail.
Fuzz? REALLY? 😒
I hear ZZ top over 40 years.
And thats NOT a ZZ-Top Sound.
👎👎👎👎
Same
I agree nothing really sounds like ZZ Top in this video
You guys are always great!!! Please do a "Sounds Like" Ace Frehley of Kiss.
do a sound like brian may without busting the bank!
Welcome back! ;)
Please do Frank Zappa or Mahavishnu Orchestra!
Wish you’d included Dusty Hill. He has a unique bass setup
Rabea accidentally ran over an old lady of Roma Gypsie descent. Her husband came up, rubbed his face, and said "THINNER!!"
Do Megadeth! :D
I have a challenge, knowing how expensive his rig is.....Misha Mansoor WITHOUT busting the bank. Haha. Good luck with that.
sounds like RUSH and Deep purple
I'd love to see an Alex Lifeson episode
Just listen to all the albums before the Eliminator.
Those are some holy grail LP and tele tones.
great video I thought the tones were very close. how about sounds like Peter green?
i'd love to see that, mainly cos i wanna see what rabea will do to Need Your Love So Bad cos it's another one of those songs like Still Got The Blues For You, actually Gary Moore did do a cover of Need Your Love So Bad
Billy uses a live rig that has a spectrum analyzer and an eq the approximates the sound of a pearly gates pickup no matter what guitar he uses. So he has a consistent tone from guitar to guitar. Genius.
sounds like weezer please
Great to see you back! How about a Steve Morse soundalike (DP Era)
OH MY GOD RABEA IS SO MUCH SKINNIER
I would have expected that bea would do a sounds like nuno bettencourt without busting the bank so here's my request, do a sounds like nuno bettencourt without busting the bank i'd love to see bea jamming to some extreme tunes
sound like The Cult!
Great video! I love this series. You should do one with Brian May from Queen! Love!
Too hard
sound like evh
Gibbons uses those bixonic expandora fx pedals silver and round. He puts them on forgiven setting, the fuzz setting but they don't make them anymore
