Kinda late but honestly seeing sabbath live on their last 2 tours Tony's tone is much thicker and a bit more modern sounding than their first few albums which they were going for. The sabra cadabra is built to mimic his old laney and treble boost sound so if it does a good enough job of replicating that as I've read I can see why they wouldn't just use his recent combo
I met Iommi some years back and mentioned his signature pickups to him because it was the very first pickup I ever purchased. He had no clue what I was talking about, his manager buddy had to remind him of what I was talking about. Actually, it sounded as though he really didn't have anything to do with it, more like he just signed a paper and *POOF* it was made. Really sweet guy though. Him and Chris Broderick are the nicest guitarist I've met to date.
he mentions them a lot in interviews, as he even likes to know what kinds of people buy them and he likes to say jazz players like the pickups, maybe he calls them differently or something, to a guy that has signature everything, sure he would forget stuff
@Katrina S Wow, that was a rabbit hole. I never realized that SD El Diablo Custom Shop pickup I have was originally known as an Iommi, and was designed in conjunction with Tony Iommi. Neat. Great pickup btw, ultra high output but very articulate.
Signature humbuckers, pretty odd for a guy whose entire sound was based on p90 single coil pickups. That's what his first SG had and used on at least the first album. Latter custom made pickups were based on p90s, afaik.
To be honest, if you add the rhythm guitar, why not the bass if you want a thicker sound? Geezer is as vital to the sound as Iommi is and that would give a better representation in my opinion. Obviously for a two guitar band you'd go for them both, but in the case of a bass and guitar, why not both?
Well Electric Wizard or Sleep would be quite easy wouldn't it? 1- get a heavy duty detuned Gibson (SG for EW, LP for Sleep); 2- Get a 150W+ amp and run it with everything cranked; 3- play a killer riff as slow as you can
That'd just get a sort of basic bitch stoner tone though wouldn't it? You want to also get that really amazing clarity that Sleep have if you're doing Matt Pike or the really dirty metal fuzz if it's Jus Osborn and Liz Buckingham. Would be good to get pointers on how to really nail that sort of sound so I could maybe try and implement elements of it in my own sound. For example I'd say an EQ pedal would be awesome for Sleep. Would help get the balance of tone he has from running two heads with everything full and four more giving out a more high mid overdrive sound. But personally I wouldn't have a clue how to set it up lol.
I think it could be more interesting to do a band like Dead Meadow honestly. Those guys have such a good tone and use a bit of delays and other stuff (not much though). I think that kind of valve break delicate territory is sometimes hard to consistently nail. But is the base of a lot of cool stuff

Geezer also played other basses, but that was not the rule. The pickup configuration depends of the song -Laney is THE Sabbath amp since the begining of times. The RB3 combo is a good choice. +Epicusername0412 You're right, I should have seen that, but still I believe a booster would have been better than the sabbra cadabra... A pity we didn't hear The epiphone straight into the amp, so that we could actually know...

+Epicusername0412 I strongly agree with that, sometimes overcompression may be a good thing if the amp/speakers are capable to deliver that punch and that amount of fuzz... An example is given by many stoner doom bands, in particular Electric Wizard
Its hard to nail alot of the sounds that are done because of the gear and the very unique techniques these artists have. That's part of the reason its called sounds like, because its very hard to get the actually same sound.
It's also his gear. Geddy with a Rickenbacker sounds different than Geddy with his Wal. Also, in his Rickenbacker days he used his bass in two channel mode, running each pickup to a different set of amps and signal chains. He's been a real gear head over the years.
For Alex: Grab whatever Blackstar you can get a hold of, gain channel, gain somewhere between 9 and 12 o'clock. Throw your favorite overdrive, one of the many Electric Mistress clones, and a Wah in front. Plug in a Les Paul or 335 and you're off to the races. Play with pickup choice and guitar volume to find clean tones, flip on the Electric Mistress when it needs to be swishy. (I find that for much of the 70s era stuff you can almost leave the Mistress turned on all the time if you set it for a subtle flange.)
They probably know that. But they are trying to sell gear haha. I’m a huge black sabbath fan and am contemplating a signature sg. So these guys probably woulda fooled me into more than just the sabbara cadabra pedal.

WHEN THEY SAID THEY WANTED TO RETIRE THE MARSHALL DSL40 I WANTED THEM TO GIVE IT A PROPER SEND OFF AND SUGGESTED THEY DO A VIDEO WHERE THEY SEE HOW MANY BANDS THEY COULD SOUND LIKE WITH IT, I THINK THAT WOULD BE COOL JUST TO SEE HOW VERSATILE OF AN AMP IT IS FROM GUYS WHO PLAY MAYBE BLUES UP TO METAL BANDS, DONT THINK PEOPLE REALLY USE MARSHALL AMPS FOR THE CLEAN TONES
How can you try to sound like Iommi and not consider using a wah wah. His early stuff is loaded with it. One more thing, the Epiphone Iommi is fantastic value but the designers really need a slap on the head by putting the strap button right on the edge of the top horn. I'd imagine that'll be snapped off after a few gigs unless it has a 3 inch screw holding it in and that is never the case.
I can't wait to see them. I'm only 24 and I'm just getting into Black Sabbath and WOW! I need to keep going and listening to all the big names in history so when I have a kid, I'll make sure they listen to it all. No ignorance in terms of music. All about being open minded. I'm seeing them here in London! All the way up front! I swear moving to the UK, specifically London was the best thing I could have done.
6505 or 5150, overdrive the front end, then some sort of solid body guitar with humbuckers. The same as every other modern metal rig out there right now.
Usually I dig these but this was pretty weak. How do you sound like Tony Iommi? just buy all his signature gear of course! Y'all were really lazy this time around. IMO signature gear should be omitted from the rig even if it fits within the budget.
It's not about getting the same thing he using but close to it.. And that pedal works perfect, i use to play guitar in a sabbath cover band for a bit just for a fav to friend while my band was on break and that pedal was so handy for me..
There's something really beautiful about the fact Tony wrote these crushing, catchy riffs that any beginning guitarist can thrill themself playing AND his signature gear isn't expensive, exclusive shit but really solid and reasonably-priced gear that is again in the reach of most beginners. (Plus listening to Sabbath can be a great gateway to everything cool metal has to offer, not to mention all the great blues and jazz that influenced them.) In other words, Tony Iommi provides the best guitar starter pack you could ask for!
I really appreciate these videos! Gives me some knowledge on guitars & distorion etc., and I really want to learn how to play guitar, so it makes me happy that I can watch these videos!
they made that rule when trying to sound like Wes Borland from Limp Bizkit, and they said it again in sound like Tom DeLonge from Blink 182, but in sounding like Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro they were allowed to use his Signature Squier strat
They will come to a dilemma when they come across artists that already use other people's signature gear. I can see that being a problem for wahs, especially. Many use either a Jimi, Dimebag, Tremonti, or Bad Horsie - all of which are signature models.
God I love the tones of early Sabbath!!! The mid-heavy, fuzzy drones and smooth, ringing treble sounds... to me, they are the ideal representation of everything that is rock n roll.
So much for dedication, Rubea didn't even cut the tips of his fingers off! Seriously though, all you need is that pedal to sound like Sabbath. Catalinbread nailed it. And for a great Plexi sound, the Dirty Little Secret is fantastic too.
got a marshall code 50 for my garage, changed the speaker, still just ok. buying the bassbreaker combo to replace it. thx for all the bassbreaker love. great recommendation.
Enjoyed your video, thanks lads. As one who cut his teeth, so to speak, on old Sabbath riffs. I can tell you that there was a bit of over dubbing that really fattened up the tone and I'm glad the Bass was mentioned in conjunction with the sound. Geezer and Tony are truly joined at the hip for that original sound. Not having access to an old Laney Supergroup amplifier and a bassist, just starting out. I found, that one can just crank your tube amplifier up and use your "tone control" and switch between pickups to get more accurate tones on different riffs. Palm muting is also beneficial, as is the angle of the pick when striking chords or what some call chugging. I never really considered "Tony" as a chugger, as he kept an edge on driving rhythms even while muting, so there's much to be said about the right hand affect. In addition, I've read that after the first album, that "Tony" began tuning lower and lower, so keep that in mind, because gear can only get you so far. Having used mostly older Fender and some Marshall amplifiers, P90's or hb's to achieve a good rhythm sound with fair success. I never spent much time learning his lead playing, but really enjoy watching other guitarists delve into it. If you like the "Sonic" years, as I do, one should catch some of Zakk Wilds band named "Zakk Sabbath". Zakk is defintely a top Sabbath guru and just nails the tones and vibe on those mid 70's albums. Enjoy and Good luck to all!
Yeah, hard to beat that Gibson Standard with P90s. Would probably have been amazing with that guitar through the Sabbra Caddabra instead of the Epiphone.
The black guitar would be more fitting for Tony's more contemporary live tone, but the Monkey SG he played the biggest part of his career was an SG Special with hot P90s.
A treble booster over the Sabra Cadabra was massive overkill. Good to see you lads worked that out pretty fast. They based the Sabra Cadabra solely on a modified Dallas Rangemaster, and Tony's Laney supergroup stack preamp. I went even cheaper with my rig: an LTD Viper 400, Ehx Op amp big muff, and Ehx Canyon for reverb/delays running through a Peavey VK100 212 combo. I get pretty damned close with it, but the Sabra Cadabra would be icing on the cake.
Love your stuff, but does it make sense to use signature gear close to what he sounds now when trying to sound like him back in the days? You already mentioned he used P90s so P90s would have been cool... Keep up the great work!
I love Sabbath, and I love the heavy, rhtythmic riffs Tony Iommi wrote. But in this episode, Matt's SG sounds awesome! I really want them to do Sabbath by busting using the new Laney LA-30BL, the LA212, an SG with P90s, and the Tony Iommi treble booster. That would be an awesome rig!
First thing I ever learned how to play was War Pigs. I was using a very old National that was basically a 335 knockoff and a Pevey Rage. Sounded decent when I wss 14!
TOP WORK LADS, I just bought the TI15 AMP. Beyond happy with it. The boost pedal is great + the HOF up the back passage = Awesome. Don´t need anything else! Im going to put a Celestion Century speaker in cos i have one & its 2kg lighter than the HH.

Sound like Thin Lizzy?
Would you ever do a Sound like Jon Fratelli or Coheed and Cambria?
Coheed would be great.
Yes, Coheed!
Coheed, yes!
C and C!
Would be so down for a Coheed video!
Absolutely love watching Bea play, you can see he’s loving every second of it!
good job! and what a lovely red sg, beautiful.
Pretty good guys. How about sounds like Megadeth, I dare you ;-)
Rust in Peace era.
Ive been saying the same thing
YESSSS
Jackson+Marshall turn the mids up instead of scooping them.
Good idea!
Thanks for finally getting to Sabbath dudes!!!! Can we get a deep purple and Cliff Burton soon?
How can you try to sound like Iommi and not consider using a wah wah. His early stuff is loaded with it.
One more thing, the Epiphone Iommi is fantastic value but the designers really need a slap on the head by putting the strap button right on the edge of the top horn. I'd imagine that'll be snapped off after a few gigs unless it has a 3 inch screw holding it in and that is never the case.
I have the iommi epiphone and have for a while now and the strap button has held very well
I think it just looks better on the back
Better balance on the horn
Bea "so Matt what are you using?"
Matt "yes"
this must have been the easiest tone chase because everything was actually made to sound like tony by tony.
Tame Impala
Seconded.
mlk doido probably going to be the hardest one
..
Phaser into reverb into delay into compressor into fuzz into vibrato
Sound Frank Zappa or Mahavishnu orchestra!!
hahaha Matt will have his work cut out for him trying to be the backing band
sound like the smashing pumpkins! please.
I was watching some random videos and I just glance at the recommended videos and this is there.
my heart stopped
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
yesss! Seeing sabbath in Hollywood this Monday, then one week later at Ozzfest!
Sound like Iron Maiden Somewhere in time
They already did Iron Maiden
they did without busting the bank, but you can do By busting the bank
he said "somewhere in time" which is a totally different tone (better)
Rodrigo Simoes Yeah I realized it after I replied. But as ***** said, they could bust the bank this time.
yeah that would be great
sound like tame impala!
Wasn't a sabra cadabra modeled on a Laney with the catalinbread treble booster circuit?
The Sabbra Cadabra is a custom-tuned Rangemaster-based booster combined with the pre-amp section of a Laney Supergroup
right, it uses their naga viper circuit? Same one they use in the brian may queen type pedal
Yep. I'm kinda curious how the rig would change if they went with the LP with P90's and just the Sabbra Caddabra + Amp.
I swear moving to the UK, specifically London was the best thing I could have done.
sound like Gojira!!!
hell yeah
6505 or 5150, overdrive the front end, then some sort of solid body guitar with humbuckers. The same as every other modern metal rig out there right now.
or the pitchfork by EHX if there's no whammies in stock
Yeah nah
David Brachmann yeah but on a budget...?
They forgot a delay pedal, Toni used like, really quick delay during solos
I second this. It became more prominent on 80's albums, but he has used delay earlier aswell.
What about a ring modulator? I know that he at least used that on the Paranoid solo
Yeah it's definitely used a bit on Master of Reality.
He also had a fuck ton of delay on for the intro of Fries Wear Boots.
Perhaps a wah would have been nice too for Electric Funeral
Ok, Zeppelin and Sabbath. Now complete the holy trinity and do Deep Purple next!
IMO you should consider ending it all early.
no name IMO you’re probably 12
not gonna lie though, it sounded pretty close
There's something really beautiful about the fact Tony wrote these crushing, catchy riffs that any beginning guitarist can thrill themself playing AND his signature gear isn't expensive, exclusive shit but really solid and reasonably-priced gear that is again in the reach of most beginners.
(Plus listening to Sabbath can be a great gateway to everything cool metal has to offer, not to mention all the great blues and jazz that influenced them.)
In other words, Tony Iommi provides the best guitar starter pack you could ask for!
I really appreciate these videos! Gives me some knowledge on guitars & distorion etc., and I really want to learn how to play guitar, so it makes me happy that I can watch these videos!
Didn't you guys use to avoid signature stuff?
Just signature gear that's not the artist they are trying to sound like I think.
Only if it isn't a signature guitar that doesn't belong to the person they're trying to sound like
they made that rule when trying to sound like Wes Borland from Limp Bizkit, and they said it again in sound like Tom DeLonge from Blink 182, but in sounding like Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro they were allowed to use his Signature Squier strat
They will come to a dilemma when they come across artists that already use other people's signature gear. I can see that being a problem for wahs, especially. Many use either a Jimi, Dimebag, Tremonti, or Bad Horsie - all of which are signature models.
No, they avoid someone else's sig for someone else's rig
Sounds like Pixies and Pearl Jam!
Nicolás Riveros they did Pearl Jam
Just waiting for pixies
I know it's not gonna happen but please do Boston
GREAT SUGGESTION! Too many requests for bands with unoriginal tones or unoriginal music, Boston is the opposite of that times two.
Layne Javel Just use you amps gain and get an eq pedal and boost the mids
Ein Walroß that's not fair. it should be mandatory to throw a Boss DS-1 in there.
I'd love a Sound like Periphery next :)
make a sound like Eddie Van Halen please
Sound like Stevie Ray Vaughan!
got a marshall code 50 for my garage, changed the speaker, still just ok. buying the bassbreaker combo to replace it. thx for all the bassbreaker love. great recommendation.
I couldn't help singing out loud the words "Alright now..won't ya listen" during the Sweet Leaf jam. Awesome!
sound like Lil Wayne!!
sounds like smashing pumpkins. they'd be a challenge to do, for sure
OK, HOW MANY PEOPLE SANG THE LYRICS WHEN BEA WAS PLAYING THE LEAD MELODY TO WAR PIGS? I KNOW I DID
MB215 that's one thing I really love about Phil X reviews. sometimes you just need someone to sing that piece after the riff !
I love Black Sabbath. Thank you for doing this :D
I'd love to see a "Sound Like My Bloody Valentine" :D
Great video, as per usual. Your video making techniques are a big influence to me. They look and sound nice and are edited very well.
Sound like Coheed and Cambria
Sound like Boston
Sound like buckethead please :D
it's not possible though
They'd have to get rid of the "Without Busting The Bank" part ;)
Id still like to see them try though :P
You nailed it again. Great stuff. Sound like Bernie Marsden would be great or as I said before John Sykes.
Sound like SLAYER!
sound like John enhwistle ! (bass)
Is it just me or does Matts rig sound more like Tony?
That P90 SG sounds incredible!
The last few months of sounds like have been very mediocre bands-wise.
Good to see the godfather of metal get a feature.
Can you do a video of sound like Tony Iommi By busting the bank
Love your stuff, but does it make sense to use signature gear close to what he sounds now when trying to sound like him back in the days? You already mentioned he used P90s so P90s would have been cool...
Keep up the great work!
Well the signature gear is usually meant to be the best of both worlds. It sounds like he sounds now but also it resembles the 70's sound.
The clock hands in the background are an upside-down cross at the intro with Ironman. So metal.
Both of those guitars sound excellent. I also love the Iomi Laney amps.
Sound Like Rival Sons, please?
Yesssss
sound like motorhead?
Van Halen, Def Leppard ??
I love Sabbath, and I love the heavy, rhtythmic riffs Tony Iommi wrote. But in this episode, Matt's SG sounds awesome! I really want them to do Sabbath by busting using the new Laney LA-30BL, the LA212, an SG with P90s, and the Tony Iommi treble booster. That would be an awesome rig!
First thing I ever learned how to play was War Pigs. I was using a very old National that was basically a 335 knockoff and a Pevey Rage. Sounded decent when I wss 14!
Why not a wah for a song like Electric Funeral? Nonetheless, not a bad Sounds Like!
Sounds like KARNIVOOL! I Know you wanna do it!
do radiohead!!
Another great band from that time period is Blue Öyster Cult. Heck, their lead guitarist, Buck Dharma, even used an SG. You should do them some time
TOP WORK LADS,
I just bought the TI15 AMP. Beyond happy with it.
The boost pedal is great + the HOF up the back passage = Awesome.
Don´t need anything else!
Im going to put a Celestion Century speaker in cos i have one & its 2kg lighter than the HH.
