I remember an interview Billy did where he talked about this performance. He said that's exactly why they hadn't done live TV before. 🤣 He said his in-ear monitors were extremely low, him and Dusty could barely hear Frank. He said the only thing they COULD hear was that "Dog gone loud ass Trumpet"!! 😂 Anyone who has seen ZZ Top knows they are extremely tight. RIP Dusty!

They were awful here. But when Chuck Berry came on in 1987 and they backed him, they brought down the house. Worth checking out. The rhythm section killed it on Roll Over Beethoven and Johnny B Goode. Even Chuck mentioned to Johnny how good they were. Of course, they weren't forcing brass into the songs. Ed Shaughnessy was the drummer for Doc's band back in that day and he was a monster on drums. He's a drumming legend.

@@matslarsson3452 You can never enjoy these talk show performances on RUclips if you listen as a critic. These bands probably flew in for the Tonight Show. They probably were able to rehearse once with the band after a sound check. Given those circumstances, I was not expecting mid-world tour perfection.

First time I saw ZZ Top was Nov 1, 1981, when they opened for The Rolling Stones here in Dallas at the Cotton Bowl. The Fabulous Thunderbirds were also on the bill. I was a kid and couldn't hear a damn thing in school for the next 4 days, but I remember every moment of that concert. THANK YOU to this #JohnnyCarson channel for sharing this fantastic flashback of the boys at their height.

The need to have the usual crappy house band as backing ruined the vibe. Plus the mix was otherwise crap. Apart from that, yeah. Even the Beastie Boys managed a better live set a few years after this in the same location. And they really are irritating.

The Beastie Boys are great that's why you can't knock them. It's not their fault they did it their way and zz top went along with this. Zz top is great and so is beasties it's just how the performances came out. They all did great with what they had.
